Salvage to Savage, '70 Nova Revival

  • After 35+ years abandoned in an eastern Pa scrap yard we dig this '70 Nova out and rebuild it into an absolute street machine. Is this Nova revival our best muscle car project yet? Watch as we take this Nova from burnt up garbage to budget built race car. How fast will our cheap Nova race car project be? Great foundation for a bracket racing legend.

Thanks so much! Glad you appreciate what I have done with this car most would have considered to far gone. I think the guys who started working or work in whatever environment to get the job done are the most motivated and crafty individuals out there. If it wasn’t for being broke and not having fancy tools and equipment I wouldn’t have learned half the skills I have today!

I'm always amazed by guys like you and the guys over at Shop209 and DD Speed Shop, putting cars back on the road that I wouldn't bring home if they were given to me. I know I lack the skills you guys have but I also lack the ambition. I like working on old cars but some of these are just overwhelming to me. Two thumbs up!

I had a 69 Nova in high school in 72. I bought it from my mother she replaced it with a 67 Chevelle Anyway it had a 307 Small blocks spin up quick. It had a two speed transmission I never got beat by 350 Camaros with 4 speeds while they were double clutching and shifting my Powerglide was in full motion it shifted at 70 mph so all the time it took for them to shift I was pulling away. When I got it I put cragars on it 6” in the front 10” deep dish in the rear I cut the exhaust off as soon as the y turned straight and I put short THRUSH MUFFLERS on it. It sounded bad and it was. Everyone told me 307 2 barrels were junk but when we raced all they saw were tailights HAVE FUN WITH YOUR NOVAS. Mine was gold with black interior. The only other time General Motors used 69 Nova gold was in 1964 Cadillac’s it was a unique color and I loved it

My '69 Swinger had rubber floor covering. Came out of Central Texas, but had spotted the front footwells being rotten from water getting trapped under the mat. We cut out the entire floor, replaced it. Even put in the 4-speed hump. Now it has subframe connectors, torque boxes, mini tubs (just to the rear rails), the thicker, reinforced core support. I really can ID with you saying "I'm into this a lot more than I thought I'd be..." lol

Nice job Bud! New subscriber here from southwest Tennessee. Ive been a 68-69 Chevelle nut my entire life, and never cared much for the Nova's. However, over the last 5 or so years, they have been growing on me. They're my second favorite muscle car now. Hopefully one day, I will have the means to own, if not a Chevelle, maybe a Nova. They are still alot more affordable and easy to find, than a Chevelle. Mainly because they kept the same body style from 68-74. Much more plentiful. My dream car is and will always be a 69 COPO Chevelle L71/M22, in Hugger Orange, black vinyl top, painted steel wheels and dog dish caps. My plans have been to find a 69 Malibu or 300 and make the closest COPO clone as possible out of it.

👍 I love what you did. I am located right in North tip of Delaware . Let me know if you are ever selling a 68-72 Nova that you have put some love into to. I had a '72 as my 1st car, my grandma's original Nova. Pee green 2 dr, power glide, only options were power steering and green tinted glass. Wish I would have been able and capable to keep it and do what I wanted to it. I did a lot of work to it with little time and money while in Highschool. Barely any rust. I took it to highschool body shop class for metal work. I have only had a single car garage with zero width to do any kind of body work indoors. Most importantly, my county won't allow a non inspected vehicle outside on your property with zero parking anywhere except driveways and street but must be kept in a garage if not inspected and registered. So you can only pull the car out of garage for like a day or 2 then it has to go back in garage. Why I'm looking to move. I want to take welding classes and do what you're doing. I can tell you access to so many parts cars you can strip as needed is a HUGE help. There was a junkyard down the street that specialized in pre 1990 vehicles. But they have since switched to vehicles from 1980 - 2000. So I lost my parts department.
You do great work. I enjoy your builds. I just came across this video so I got many vids to go back through. Keep bringing 68-72 Novas back from the dead. I woulda wrote off this 72 for putting back on the road and stripped the front clip and other salvageable components and let it sink, lol. Great work man.
Oh, you'll learn who to trust working on what. Some people are great at doing suspension, brakes, engine, metal work but can't do interior, glass, or trim work. And vice versa. Finesse vs brute force. Many can't do both. Some can do it all. Usually comes down to patience.

I have this thing. When I get old vehicles happening I always install a Delco Remy alternator. IMO everything else is crap when it comes to alternators. I also go with spring loaded exhaust and catch wires. Canada has some tough roads and spring loaded can be popped back on when it gets torn off, and easy to replace when the time comes. I also like to install that flex pipe between the manifold and the converter, if any. This allows donut gaskets to last longer.

FYI,that 307 you have is the beginning of a badass 327 motor if you change a few things....🤷

I’m sure this little motor will be seeing some upgrades in the future. Little bugger runs damn good.

Awesome work. Give you a lot of credit for your time and dedication. Was definitely a salvage car when you got it. But I personally can’t say it’s a savage. But amazing work none the less. Just get it out and drive it and enjoy it and make it worth while

I just came across your channel and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one with the sickness. I have two c10’s in the mist of building mine and one for my wife hers is completely spired out of control from just fixing a few holes in the floor to frame off and thousands of dollars later

This thing is freaking cool! I helped a buddy do the exact same thing with a 68 Camaro he stumbled upon in one of his neighbors barns after the guy passed away. it was a low mile 6 cylinder car that was missing a drivetrain and was other wise in pieces. I borrowed a trailer from work and hauled the thing to his house with my 81 Chevy K20. He found a 305 and a th350C from an 80's ElCamino, we went to swap meets for random parts and got the thing driving in like 6 months.
