Most (I mean 99%) of research papers are incremental in nature. The authors of the paper "Attention is all you need" that developed the architecture of Transformer thought that their work is significant only for small use cases like Machine Translation. Little did they know then that this Transformer will become the 'T' in chatGPT. Research papers are always useful - not necessarily as a standalone work, but as an intermediary idea that may be built upon.
In my work, I consider literature review as the most important part of research. Every small (peer reviewed and validated) paper counts and are important in my view.
I think what he meant is the number of papers published by below par private univs just for namesake. Attention is all you need is a fundamentally innovative paper, especially the positional encoding logic. So is NTM, DNC etc although there are only few practical direct application discovered yet. I personally know a PHD candidate in a pvt univ, who published a paper on a modified random forest, written just for namesake and got accepted.

I do not have a science back ground. But For Eg.. a Motor Bike with EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) gives 50 km/litre mileage at 60 km/hour speed is a Digital aspect. The Same category Bike with Carburetor can be fine-tuned manually by different mechanics can give varying Mileages to even 80km/litre or above also at speed of 60km/hour is purely an analog concept which is practically possible. I also understand that Animals like Cat, Dog can sense and identify their owner, members residing the home by foot steps, speed, vibrations, smell, sound ,time intervals, impact of surrounding air and other unknown variants. Bringing out AI type Tiles(E-Tiles..?) is a fine idea for security purpose. Professor you are an asset to the complete man kind. Hats off to you. Stay Blessed Thank you so much.

Most knowledge in industry is decades old ...best of ideas in the world came out of college professors in the last several decaded...the reason why silicon valley existed is an ecosystem created by such professors...the thoughts are where it all begins...and all most all major companies are working hard on memory/resistive arrays as we speak...many of that came out of informed science from universities..for ai processors and applications..and its ignorance to say that universities cant do industry level work..simply a myth that many people have. This effort is greatly appreciated...replacing professors in universities with some robots will be the end of science and educated society.

You haven't really understood Analog computing that he was talking about. It's nothing like the old Analog devices . It's a way of not using a binary system and using the analog way of computing using sophisticated technology. This is the most modern area of scientific research that would drive the world of data science, machine learning, AI etc

This is known as ivory tower theory where reality is totally different.binary computing is used not because it is more efficient than analog computing but because it has a wide range of application. Analog computing is still used in many application where physical interface is needed....and it is a major PHD subject for computer science so people are fascinated by it.. But application Wise digital system will prevail
