Despite all the negative comments on him, I remember Canada prospering well during his time. My family was prosperous, we ate well, mortgages were no issue and we had tenfold the disposable income to travel and upgrade the houses etc. Those were good times to myself and my friends and family.
I remember those as the best 10 years to be a Canadian….despite all the liberal caterwauling. The Canadian dollar worth $1.10 usd! Respected on the world stage. Harper set the stage so Carney’s job at the bank of Canada was easy
As a Liberal leaning Canadian, I voted for Harper because at the time, I thought he is what Canada needed. Make no mistake though, the fiscal responsibility and policies of the Chretien government with Paul Martin made it pretty cushy for him, particularly when the financial crisis hit. Harper was doing a great job, until he wasn't. Same with Trudeau.
@crealist CARNEY is the one that didnt follow what the OTHER banks were doing. Had NOTHING to do with Harper. He had a fantastic economic financier/analyst at the helm, and "balanced the budget' by pillaging its resources and reserves! And he was in power for THIRTEEN years not 10. Our dollar went to par and was NOT good for 'our' economy. So NO, he didnt 'set any stage' except treading water to the 2008 crash!

My favourite Stephen Harper moment was when he'd called a press conference at the edge of a vineyard somewhere in southern Ontario, to announce one of his lame policy promises, but then yet another scandal erupted between the announcement and the beginning of the presser. So there he finds himself, stuck in the middle of nowhere infront of a bunch of professional reporters who he's invited to ask him questions (which happened less and less frequently, as his reign of error continued). So what does the courageous Stephen Harper, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Prime Minister of Canada do? He orders his RCMP protective detail to block the reporters, and he runs away into the vineyard! Him scurrying away into the rows of grapes was the most honest moment of his entire political career, and probably life.
"Reign of Error!!" I love it! Unfortunately, he managed to pull off some pretty greasy stuff while in power. Quite ironic him calling the left out as "Authoritarian!"
When Harper left office, we had a balanced budget (the last time our government had a balanced budget), low inflation, low interest rates, low crime, low unemployment, no tent cities. And don't blame covid. Trudeau was running deficits prior to covid, and continues to do so ($20 billion more this year than originally budgeted). Soon, the Liberal "Reign of Error" will be over!

Great interview and nice to see former Prime Minister Harper speak. He is missed and IMHO is in the top 5 Pm's in our Canadian history. He actually answered a couple of emails personally while PM which says a lot about the man. He is politically and economically wise and astute to be sure. We miss you Sir Harper 🇨🇦😊
This interviewer doesn't understand we are here to listen to Mr. Harper speak and not for him to be constantly interrupted. Very disrespectful indeed. When Mr. Harper was the Prime Minister of Canada, we Canadians were a happy go lucky, confident and proud people. The fluff and lack of substance from the drama teacher, part time ski instructor propped up by the legacy corporate media, has now left the people of this country angry, scared, divided, almost at each others throats and unable to pay their bills. What a huge mistake it was to elect this clown. Its highly unlikely we will ever recover from the last 10 years. This is not partisan politics, these are facts.
Harper was a nightmare as a PM. He was probably the most dishonest PM in Candian history. I received one of the robocalls from his party on election day, meant to prevent people they'd identified as likely to not vote for their Con from voting for anyone. Remember when he fired all the scientists in DFO, closed the research institutes, and had the holdings of DFO's science libraries actually destroyed?? How about prorogueing Parliament twice to avoid non-confidence votes? It's such a "crime" that JT did it once, according to all of Harper's former followers, but somehow they don't seem to remember or care about when "their guy" did it. Harper was terrible for national unity, terrible for the country, terrible for the budget, terrible for federal social programs, terrible for the military and our veterans, and terrible for democracy in Canada. But hey, at least he was "an economist" - albeit one who'd never actually been employed anywhere as one - right?
These are pretty partisan politics. You forget that Harper sold many Canadian resources to international interest. Where is the real balanced takes? Where are the non fascists at?
@kylekafka6636 not really, Canada had a once in a lifetime chance to write some of the biggest energy contracts in the world in our favor. And Trudeau said no. Because it was natural gas we would have also been simultaneously lowering global emissions. We could have fought Russia, climate change, and made billions of dollars at the same time. Instead trudeau, Freeland, and Carney stole billions and siphoned them into their own accounts while tariffing canadian exports.
Harper looks pretty good right now - after nine years of photo ops, word salad, narcissism, financial bungling and waste, big (inept) government, and the loss of Canadian pride.
HERE'S HOW TO SAVE CANADA 🇨🇦. GET A LEADER WITH GUTS AND GET SELLING OUR REFINED NATURAL RESOURCES WITH PROPER INFRASTRUCTURE FROM WEST TO THE EAST COAST. PIPELINE EAST. BUILD OUR MILITARY WITH CANADIANS BUILDING OUR MILITARY EQUIPMENT AND STOP GIVING AWAY OUR MONEY TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

The Independent Electricity System Operator, which manages supply and demand in Ontario, reported last year the province may have to consider increasing the amount of electricity it imports from the U.S, even as it rushes to build new power plants and find new sources of power. The balance is already shifting: by fall 2023, monthly average U.S. electricity exports to Canada increased by 70 per cent, and imports decreased by 36 per cent. Last year, British Columbia became a major importer of electricity; 20 per cent of the province’s electricity came from America last year.
Yes let's ask the guy currently responsible for 100s of billions of dollars of pension fund how we should tackle the issues caused by immense wealth accumulation.
Didn’t always agree with RH Harper, but I respected him. Where we have gone since his departure saddens me. Tough interview to listen to with the interviewer continually interrupting.
This from a former PM who was disliked by most everyone as he tried to hang on at the end. He seems to have made some improvements because in the latter days his party would not even let him talk to the press with vetted questions, because he was unable to. His party (much like what Democrats were doing) then accused Trudeau of everything that was wrong with him (that he couldn't even answer questions). I was there for a press conference and Trudeau opened the floor to 45 mins of questions that he had no prior knowledge of. I know, because I was in the front row and asked the third one. Don't believe a thing Harper says. I have wished that I could be proud of someone who attended the same elementary school as I did, but I'm certainly not.
My pet name for Harper was 'Mr Lemon Pledge", he would make pledges, everyone would move on and he would not follow up. His treatment of our veterans was what made me the most upset. His whole time in office he pushed for a pipeline no one wanted, his time in office was in essence a failure as that is what his masters wanted. WE now have a pipeline to the coast without his drama.
We need pipelines for energy security for the Maritimes and we need to the revenue for our independence. As true to day as it was then, so what the hell are you talking about "drama"?
@@user-vl1bo6pf7g Simple, the pipeline that Trudeau made sure happened isTMX. He took a hit politically as it cost him his majority. Northern Gateway as Harper called it was a complete ecological disaster plan that was blocked despite him pushing it for his entire mandate. Complete waste of ten years while he beat up BC at every opportunity. TMX is now operational. Harper bowed down to the US on our softwood lumber agreement as punishment for not letting him build his pipeline. Just one example there's more. Talk to Irving see what he has in mind for you. Harper was going to take NL oil revenues and allow Alberta to keep theirs, remember that? That is the west coast view.
Did you hear about that guy who was parked in a gurney in a hospital corridor for three days, and his family was told that he was fine and he could go home; only to die that night? He didn't even see a doctor.
Great to see the Rt. Hon. Steven Harper commenting on these issues. I wonder if he would be interested to teach a course for JPeterson's new on line university? This would be a great addition to the curriculum.
We must keep in mind when listening to harper that he heads an organization that represents right wing governments around the world. I doubt his agenda is democratic.
I watched this hoping to see some sort of intelligent analysis from Harper but he only revealed his basic shallowness of knowledge and thought. The best he could do was latch on to the WOKE pejorative (academics , bah what do they know?) that is so useful as a cultural and political appeal to ignorance. There is no radical left of any consequence in Canada or the US but Harper seems to believe there is, (or pretends to) so he pounds away at a straw man of his own making.
I agree about the extreme left viewing everything as bad and needing to be torn down and being nihiliste. Yes there are changes to be made but they're way too much. We have massive problems in the income gap where the working class quality of life is tanking hard. Anyone with net worth in the millions isn't feeling it and doesn't know how horrendous it is. A lot of people can barely get by let alone ever have a family. I myself feel loss of hope for the future. Quality of life gets worse and worse each year for me and dramatically so. That being said yes the left is far too extreme but we do need them as a lobby group to bring about some changes, just don't want them running the country.
Of course anybody with a million $ net worth isnt feeling it. Everybody thats remotely smart just moves to the US LOL. Our currency and house prices are so hyper-inflated, that you woudl be hard pressed to find anybody WITHOUT atleast a million $'s in net worth in any city.

Stephen Harper's appointment to run Alberta's AIMCo pension plan is a disgusting move by the Alberta UCP government. This is a pension fund for 500,000 workers that have been putting their hard in money into for years. Employee pension funds should be managed from arms length, this is why the Ontario Teacher's fund pension has done so well. Why would Stephen Harper accept this appointment? I’m a lefty and actually found this conversation very interesting. Felt threatened and defensive a few times but stuck with it. It’s interesting how much I actually agree with what was being talked about here. Illiberalism and intolerance is often the response when we drift too far in either direction. Where I get a bit hung up is that pure unbridled freedom/liberalism is actually just anarchy. Which is obviously counterproductive to a functioning society. We actually give up a lot of rights in order to have that society, but if we give up too many, then that’s costly as well. It’s always held in tension. The fundamental factor between someone identifying with the right or left is usually based on what you believe is unfair/fair about how current society is set up. What extent do you believe systemic racism actually affects people? Or do you think that is an overreaction and everyone gets what they deserve purely based on merit. That’s how it feels more and more.
Stephen Harper is a typical articulate and charismatic Canadian politician that makes Trump look grossly outclassed in comparison. Seems that every time the interviewer tried to finish Stephen Harpers thoughts, he got it wrong.
We should ask Mr Harper about the SPP that he had planned when he was prime minister. The Security and prosperity agreement of North America. As a Canadian, I can confidently say that we collectively made a colossal mistake when we voted Trudeau into the prime ministerial position in lieu of Stephen Harper. You don’t have to agree with every single thing this man did during his tenure as PM, but I’m inclined to believe that he was the real deal. Our current PM is playing the role, as will his successor, and as do the rest of his party (including the “rebel caucus”). If Pierre Poilievre is as effective a prime minister as he is an opposition leader, he may very well surpass Mr Harper. @@theengineer70 Harper reduced the GST by 2% points AFTER THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY INSTATED IT IN 1991. That's like saying "He lit the house on fire and once it was full engulfed, he threw a glass of water on it." Jesus. The logic of conservatives (or lack thereof) will never cease to amaze me.
He had the Canadian economy growing. Wow, what a concept.

Or a battle between intelligence and just outright stupidity. The woke mind virus grows in near-empty heads that never had anything of substance there to begin with.

Best PM in my lifetime ❤
Indeed a great PM.
Harper was a disaster as Prime Minister. It is the MAGA ppl in Canada that has ruined our country. No MAGA Poilievre here for me.
You say that these are facts, but claiming we'll never recover is pretty hyperbolic no?

This video aged like the finest of wine, and the underlying message remains true: despite the perilous state of Canada and the United States, we have the potential to reach new levels of prosperity and greatness if we’re wise and diligent.
You had two opportunities to vote Trudeau out, but failed miserably. Perhaps Canadians prefer democracy, something this guy eroded in this country.

* By attacking journalism, a democracy without journalism isn't a democracy
* Cutting funding to science to mute the knowledge an ensure no ones can oppose his policies
* Concentrating all the power in the PM hands. I remember, the deputies were all commanded to repeat the same tape over and over when interviewed.
* By having downplayed an illegal conservative election schemes in Ontario, there were two or three liberal counties where they organized illegal calls made to induce liberal voters (using some shady phone list) to go to a wrong voting point. The investigation blocked when they discovered they used burner phones to order the automated calls.
These are only the examples that comes to mind, but I remember there was plenty more. The problem is, we forget fast. Harper's era was very bad for us all (except Alberta who enjoyed oil deregulation to its extreme).
Ahhh...now I remember when Canada had a competent leader. Thank you Steven Harper. We miss you!
The interviewer is interrupting too much. The guest is very well spoken and articulate, please let him finish his thoughts and stop cutting him off. It's very hard to understand with frequent interruptiobs from the host
The blame game is the problem and Harper has it in spades.
So nice to hear a grown up speak. Exact opposite of Trudeau
Trudeau also speaks in full sentences. It is Poilievre who speaks only in catch phrases and insults.
@ while wearing black face? Get a clue
@@mswaffer Full sentences? He has never answered a question since he was elected, yes he babbles on and on and on, but he never says anything that actually answers the question.
Boy oh boy, Canada sure missed the boat when Harper left.
left? he was kicked out and gave the other party a majority.. short memory?
Are we all forgetting that Harper was like the absolute monarch of back room deals? Dude was slimier than Trudeau.
This is the plan of "The Century Initiative!
It is just the beginning!!!🤔🤔🤔
i would never want to be in canada.
We are fine without you... Cheers.

Me either want to leave
The real problem is the amount of money taken away from BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan in transfer/equalization and squandered in Ottawa with the remaining given to Quebec and the rest of the East.
Where's the beef here? After this discussion, we still don't know what the real problem is. Wasted interview
Harper let the globalist food monopolies buy up the beef ranches.
What a lousy interviewer. Mr. Interruption, and he just couldn't follow what Mr. Harper was saying.
Harpo channels Maggie Thatcher - "T.I.N.A. !" 🤣
I am a Liberal, but I will say that Stephen Harper was a good PM. In recent history there is no leader in either country that comes close economics wise. If he says it, it is correct.
Keep in mind that economics graduates are among the dumbest of university social science students AND one of the biggest contributions economics has made as a science has been to make astrology look like a science.
Harper needs to accept his responsibility for the decline of Canadian democracy that happened under his watch I am the source of the Globe and Mail article "Legal misstep lets Catholic Church off hook for residential schools compensation" It took me seven years to discover that the Roman Catholic Church did not fulfill its obligations under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement because of federal government secrecy.
Quiet, Joe, let him talk!!
