The Roland SPD-SX PRO is crazy good, which is why I decided to output MIDI and control Ableton with it, ha! It turns out that it's also a crazy good MIDI controller, so here's how to output MIDI through either the USB or 5-pin MIDI cable outputs.
Have I said MIDI enough yet?

thank you for your video, its the first one on RUclips, about the Roland Spd sx pro, MIDI setting, I think.
so I really love your content dude!
cheers
Thanks so much!!
Hey - thx for the shout out!
And thank you for all you do!!
Hey Mate, you explain things so well! What if one just wants to record the sounds straight from the pad to Ableton? Can you do that with the data cable?
Thanks so much! I don’t think you can record the sounds just with the USB cable, you’d have to take the jack output and put it into an audio interface
For some reason my notes on The spd sx pro are 1 octave higher than the actual midi note on ableton. For example if I put on pad 1 c3 on my ableton it is c2 I don’t know why
Great video! I’m trying to plug my SPDSXPRO to an iPad Air via MIDI at the moment and have been having trouble figuring it out or seeing if it’s possible. I have an iRig capable of working with the iPad and receiving MIDI inputs and outputs. Any advice or tips? I have Ableton, as well, but would love to be able to use this as a midi device for drums in GarageBand on the iPad.
Ooh nice! I’ve not connected an iPad directly yet, but I have seen people do this successfully so I recon you can too! In theory, if your iRig can already receive MIDI, it’ll just be a case of changing the MIDI output notes on the SPD-SX Pro to match those you want in Garage band. Let me know how it goes!
hi, i have Spd pro try to send drum note from keyboard Korg pa 5 to Spd and not work you know the problem I use channel 10 for drum, thanks
I do not see your sed pro review in this description or on your channel, and I'd lie to see it; any advice? I truly enjoy the videos I've seen so far!
You can find it on my Patreon page! Patreon.com/drumelectric
I don't wan't to use my SPD-SX pro as a controller, I want to use it as a live instrument as the pre-set drums are better than the ones in Ableton (in my opinion) Thanks
Thanks for your video! I recorded with MIDI. Can i do this with spd sx pro kit for listening?
You can use the SPD-SX Pro as a MIDI controller, if that’s what you mean?
Hi,
I currently have an SPD-SX Pro together with a Roland BT-1 (as HiHat) and a Roland FD-9 (as HiHat pedal).
Everything works when I work with the SPD-SC Pro.
Since I practice with Melodics, how can I also tune them via General Midi?
In other words, when I press the HiHat pedal with the BT-1, I want a closed HiHat sound.
If I don't press the HiHat pedal with the BT-1, then I want an open HiHat sound.
Currently I have the HiHat pedal configured in the SPD-SX Pro as General Midi, 44
The BT-1 configured as Hihat in the SPD-SX Pro as General Midi, 46
But, as you can guess, there is no connection between these two.
How can I solve this? Any tips?
Thank you in advance!
This is a fantastic question that in all honesty, I don’t know the exact answer to! I completely get what you’re going for, and it’s something pretty standard when it comes to electronic kits and using it within external players like ‘Superior Drummer’ or ‘Get Good Drums’ (for example) because they have to tell the player that you’ve pressed the Hi-Hats, and therefor you want a closed sound.
I’m sorry that I don’t have an answer for you yet! If you ever find out, please either comment here or shoot me a message. I’d love to know! And if I find out, I’ll most likely make a video on it
Can you get a light visual feedback from Ableton clips?
From my knowledge, no. But that would be amazing!
Thanks. Bummer, I’m not sure why Roland didn’t include this feature, the technology exist even in the cheapest launchpad and other midi controllers.
have you figured out how to set the open-hiHat midi note in the kit midi section? There does not seem to be an open-hiHat midi note option?
Maybe best to phrase the term 'open-pedal' and 'closed-pedal'. On the SPD-30 you can easily set the open-pedal and closed-pedal midi notes. SPD-SX PRO is missing the open-pedal option.
I haven’t yet, but in all honesty I stopped looking shortly after this video as I wasn’t needing to use the feature. Once I get my hands on a hi-hat setup, I’ll be sure to make more videos!
@@jameselvidge4803Hey, did you find a way to assign open/closed hihat midis to one pad?
I sadly didn’t. The only thing I can think of is setting the CC MIDI rather than the individual note, as the hi-hat sends a range rather than specific notes. Asides from that, I unfortunately don’t have one to play with!
Hi i need your help..😢
Is there any legacy Driver anywhere for SPDSX PRO for I know its extremely old operating system, but need desperately a Driver for OSX 10.5, I can use SPDSX with osx 10.5 but need legacy driver SPDSX PRO
As the Pro is brand new, I would presume not as the software just wouldn’t have existed for it and they may not have built a version that far back
@@DrumElectric Morning Harry, thank you for reply very impressed you got back to me, Yeah I know I have been desperately looking for anyone who has done a legacy driver, so annoying as their is nothing there for the very old OSX, was really hoping someone might have a backwards Driver for older Mac models, as I mentioned can still SPDSX but nothing for Pro out their, let me know if you hear of anything?
