You'll need to go into your Privacy & Security settings on mac, and then you should see a little option that says "Open Anyway" in there
The cheapest way is to use a DDrum trigger set with the Little red box converter it cost less than 200 dollars trigger include, it connect to usb and can be use as a MIDI impulse feeder Roland are great but only with there sampling system like the TM6 pro i have it too, but i think the sensitivity of the DDrum are superior compare to Roland triggers.
That's really good to know! Thanks for the comment! I'll check them out when I get the chance
do you give sessions for Roland SPD help/tutorials?
Yes! Head to drumelectric.co.uk to find everything you need
Thanks - works great from my mac - do you know of a simple way to trigger and run lights also from Ableton without a ton of programming - maybe something like a random generator based on the audio coming from the Ableton backing track - thanks
That's a great question! Unfortunately none that I know of, as a random generator would need programming, ironically! For an easy setup, a lot of lights come with built in patches that are random. You could pair this with a simple 'Black Out' function should you want it, where the lights go dark after a song and come back in for the next song. Would still require a small amount of programming, though
at the end around @11:55 did you use a Foot Switch to change the Bt-1 from the cowbell sample to a clap sample? Also where did you get these clean sounding samples from?
For this video, I had the triggers automated to change through Ableton. But you can absolutely use a footswitch to change it if Ableton isn't available. For the samples, they're just part of my sample collection! I've made a video on "Where to Get Samples" should you need some pointers
can you "add" a 5th trigger. In other words - use the dual function of the RT-30HR AND also have a BT-1. And then use an external pad like a Pd-8 and a Kt-10. or is this too many slots?
I've responded with the potential answer to this on the "How to Get a Cross-Stick Sound with Triggers" video comment, but you can only use 5 triggers with a different module. The SPD-SX specifically only supports 4 triggers
Can you not have dual trigger with the RT-30HR? ie. one sample sound on the batter and one on the "sub" or the outside/hoop of the drum? I don't currently own a BT-1. I was rehearsing today and changing some sample settings on the RT-30 as "trig 1" and i always got double triggering / false trigger on all aspects of the drum even though I had two samples set up on it. Edit: you literally mentioned this at the end of the video and didn't have a solution either. To further this question - can you add a 5th trigger? I currently route trig 1/2 to a RT-30HR and a RT-30K and then trig 3 and four to a Roland V drum pad and a Roland KT-9
So yes, you can have two trigger sounds with the RT-30HR, but as you've mentioned, you're more likely to get double triggering from the centre of the drum with the RT-30HR (or single trigger) rather than the BT-1. This is an old video, so I need to look back into this to make sure all the information is still correct with today's knowledge! For a 5th trigger - you can if your module supports it. For example, the SPD-SX only supports 4 triggers, whereas the SPD-SX Pro is something like 8
Hi Harry is there any way to Listen the sounds of Spd-Sx Pro using the Usb Cable, as the usb capable of (USB COMPUTER port : USB B (High-Speed USB, USB-AUDIO, USB-MIDI, App)) throuGh Sx Pro App without Master/Phones PhysiCaL ConneCtions?
Just replied to your other comment, but from my knowledge, you can't pass audio through USB annoyingly. That would be great, though!
Hi Harry Thank you for the video. Can we get the sound output of RoLand Sps-Sx Pro throuGh USB Audio (using Spd-Sx Pro App on desktop with speakers ConneCted to Desktop) without using additional CabLes into master outputs on Sx Pro.
From my knowledge, you can't pass audio through the USB annoyingly. That would be great, though!
Hi Harry Question, I have a sampled sound for an Eagles song. I have it loaded on card and working fine other than it seems to take a few seconds to load. Anyway my question is when I trigger the sample is there not a way to stop it early if needed by hitting the pad again. Thank you
Great question! There should be a setting on that pad that says either "Alt" or "Shot" (or something similar, I may be mixing that with the SPD-SX settings!). If you use the down arrow when on that pad, you should see more settings
could you do the same with logic pro for ipad?
Yes! Logic is the grown-up version of GarageBand
You actually helped
Can you run a click on this also?
Yes!
@DrumElectric how would you do that? Would it be a matter of panning the click track to a different side so it doesn't come to front of house?
@DannyMartinMusic yep, you’re exactly right!
i saw a drummer controlling ableton with that pedal and ended up on this vid looking for how to do it
Happy I could help!!
Thanks all the commentors below for saving my money,Needed this kind of device to play loops during songs on acustic kit we play and fact that so many people mentioned an uploading issue there must be something to do with it,Shame cos this compact thing would be perfect for the purpose if only was doing was it isn't
Would love to know if you've found an alternative, or if the Alesis did what you're wanting. I need to make an update with all of the issues from the comments here
Can't thank you enough!
Hello super video I love it, I had the software for the SPD SX Limited but now I bought the SX SX PRO I am looking for the same application as SPD-SX WAVE Manager, does it exist thank you good day Bonjour super vidéo j'adore, j'avais le logiciel pour le spd sx limited mais maintenant j'ai acheté le spd sx pro je recherche la même application que SPD-SX Wave Manager , est ce que cela existe merci bon journée
Absolutely! Check out my video’s on the SPD-SX Pro and you’ll find it!
@@DrumElectric Thank you a question can we move the scenes as we want? With the pro version
@NightFeverVar yes! The Pro version is so much better than the SPD-SX version. You can even use the Pro at the same time as editing it on the software!
@@DrumElectric Good evening, the manager version does not exist for the SPD SX Pro version, too bad because I love your application that I had on the SPD-SX Limited pad. bonsoir la version manager existe pas pour la version sod sx pro dommage car j'adore votre application que j'avais sur le pas dpdsx limited
@NightFeverVar It’s called the ‘SPD-SX PRO APP’ and you can find it on the Roland Cloud. It doesn’t look the same, but does the same plus many more features
Se podra hacer lo mismo pero desde wave manager ????
(Sorry for replying in English!) I haven’t tried it from the Wave Manager. You might be able to, as the factory reset file is the same as any other backup.
Si puedes un dia probar desde wave manager Te lo agradeceria Solucionaria no uitilizar pendrives Gracias Saludos desde chile 🇨🇱 @@DrumElectric
Thanks man!!
La verdad, que tipazo
All well and good however the SPD-SX PRO doesnt have 12 outputs ?
According to the manual it does! But I still haven’t found all of them…
Thank you!
Thanks for the video. Worth mentioning, the wav file name seems to be significant. Just spent 1hr+ trying to remove metadata from my wavs, going round the bend, as the wave manager app kept saying File type not supported. Then I changed the name of the wav to 'A', 'B' etc (from something long involving lots of special characters and numbers)... and it worked.
That’s really good to know! I presume that’s the SPD-SX not recognising the file name rather than the file itself. Makes sense!
But in a live situation with a set list of songs, are you putting each song one after the other on the timeline and setting their tempos/time sigs? It does not seem plausible to close a project file and then open a new one in order to play the next song.
Yes! You’re absolutely right. So each song with go one after another and then automate the tempo, just like I showed in the video
You can route logic’s inbuilt click
You absolutely can!
Does it cue video as well?
Oooh interesting! Logic does play video but I haven’t tried it with backing tracks. In theory if you move the video window, yes!
wtf you can't have more than 1 audio file at the same time? What if I wanna have bass, drums and say keys separated, like anyone would want to do for backing tracks in a live setting?
That’s strange, I’ve absolutely had more than 1 at a time! Up to 8, but I’m pretty sure as many as your computer can handle
Thanks man!
i thought you’d died harry 😮💨 good to see you’re still alive
ur so dramatic
How are you outputting the iPad audio to your headphones when playing along to a song or a click track? Bluetooth headphones always throw terrible latency when I’m trying to record but it doesn’t look like you are getting any. Any help or insight is appreciated 🙏🏻
For this video, I just plugged into the headphone output of the audio interface. There is slight latency, which is normal for audio interfaces, but none that affects the playing or recording ability!
Thank you for informations Alesis 👍
I’d be really interested in a 10 or 12 out version of this. We’re a 6 piece band with clicks, backing keys sections (intros and interludes) and live keys so having keys stereo 1/2 clicks on 3, vocals 4, drums 5/6, bass 7, lead guitar 8, rhythm guitar 9, backing keys 10/11 would mean we can rehearse without any member there and run the one session. Hopefully he makes a version with more outs in the future.
That would be so cool!! It’s a bit more expensive and not quite the same as it requires a laptop, but might be worth looking into something like the PlayAudio 1U. I would normally recommend the Cymatic Audio LP-16, but they’re discontinued annoyingly. Be worth looking into nonetheless as it’ll give a good idea of what you might need!
Can I use this method if I'm have multiple songs in one session - or how do you manage a whole setlist?
Absolutely! That’s exactly how I do it. So I’d just import the next track with a gap between, and so on until you have a full set. But experiment, see what works for you best!
that was awesome, thank you man
Big fan - thanks for all you do. Question that I can’t seem to find an answer to. I would love to have ableton trigger a pad on the Roland. For example, I have a sound loaded on the Roland spd sx pro. Instead of hitting the pad myself, I would love to have ableton make it play using midi. Any ideas?
Thanks for the kind words! That’s an interesting one, I love it. You can send MIDI from Ableton to the SPD-SX Pro, and with that you can do things like change the patch without touching it. I’m not sure you can trigger a pad though. Out of curiosity, what’s making you want to trigger a pad on the SPD-SX Pro rather than have the sound in Ableton and play it like that?
1:30 best unboxing ever!! 😂
Almost dropped it, glad I didn’t 🤣
Thanks brother, this helps me a lot in our small church
Love your channel, it’s been very helpful as I have started gigging with a spdsx and just upgraded to a pro…
Hello! We are using Ableton live for backing tracks - using stem files and sending those stem files to FOH as individual channels to mix, so not just a left-click, right-tracks mix, but however many stems the song has. I use arrangement view and blend tracks one into the other for shows. We currently have no video or easy lighting (i'm using a DMXIS with individual points to control the lights in a lighting track - which is tedious.) My boss has asked me to check out QLAB. What benefits might I find choosing QLAB to run our tracks over Ableton? I'm also unsure an easier way to run lighting - it has to be easier than creating points in the automation view of the lane. Perhaps MIDI triggers to some lighting software on another computer. Just not sure why I'd switch to QLAB, or how to make it easier to program lighting in Ableton. I also can trigger lyric slides in ProPresenter using Ableton. So, based on how we use Ableton, would you recommend I consider switching to QLAB, and if so, why?
A great question! In summary, there’s no reason to switch to QLab outside of other people may being more familiar with it. It sounds as if your boss see’s other people use QLab for what they want, and therefore associate the solution to being QLab where in actual fact you’re doing everything you need to do on Ableton. I see no reason to switch!
Great video! Was helpful a lot. I tried it with my P1 for kust having a click along with the feed from FoH. Used a 3.5 mm to XLR male for iPhone. This XLR to one input and the other from FoH. However click volume level was extremly low. Couldn’t figure it out. Any recommendations would be appreciated 🤞
Weird! Might be because they’re sending a really loud level from FOH. What you’d need to do is pan the P1 to the side your click is on when in ‘Mono’ mode. That way it’s favoured more to the click level. The only other thing you can do is export the click as loud as you can
@@DrumElectric will try audiobus to boost the signal from iPhone tomorrow. Will keep here updated. Thanks!
@@DrumElectric btw I was using 3.5mm to single XLR. Do you think having a dual and giving one to FoH would change it?
@selfupon great! Keep us updated!
@@DrumElectric here is the update mate! I tried different options. Switched to iPad and used Audiobus to boost the signal decibel for the click output. The result was amazing. Also the FoH engineer we worked was also awesome.
Hi man you should really maybe take this video down as the product doesn't do what you say it does
Thank you for letting me know! I appreciate it! What is it not doing? I’ll look to remake the video to suit its current capabilities
@@DrumElectric I just bought the pad and it doesn't run the backing tracks with the settings you've laid out in this video. I got the file down to the minimum sample rate for the machine to handle but the sound quality is barely listenable especially for in a live/gig situation. Most of the other comments under this video are also having the same problem. I've just filled out a form to return the product so hopefully will get my money back but just want to advise anyone else who may be looking to go with this product for running backing tracks in the future.
@oliverharris7404 that’s really interesting! I will have a re-think and re-programme my unit to match what yourself and others are saying. I’ll leave these comments here in the hopes they help others!
Can you use the TM2 via Midi in a DAW/Recording session instead of using an input on your interface? If so where do I start?
You can, but annoyingly the TM2 doesn’t have MIDI over USB (no USB input), so you’d have to have a way of getting 5 pin MIDI to your DAW from the TM2. I do this just using an audio interface like the Focusrite 18i20
@@DrumElectric I have a 18i20 and ADAT addition. I'm just not sure of the proof of concept. I see how you can control your DAW. But not sure how to configure to Midi/TM2 to use the sample
Ah right! Then if you get the 5-pin MIDI ‘out’ of the TM2 to the ‘in’ of the Focusrite. Then it depends on with DAW you use and the MIDI instrument. Then go onto the TM2 and make sure your MIDI channel is set to ‘global’ and that each trigger is sending out a MIDI note as sometimes it defaults to ‘none’
How can i fix this on my spd-sx pro?
The SPD-SX Pro has an almost identical feature, so you can do pretty much the same thing
Finally! An actual tutorial on Mainstage for backingtracks! Thanks!
Glad I can help!!

so this video is 2016, how do you do it now?
This video is from 2021! But very unexcitingly, exactly the same. Not much has changed in backing track tech!
I've just been starting to look at a machine to run backing tracks for my band, as we have some pads and string sections we just can't faithfully recrate live on stage. My laptop is just too delicate to use in a live setting, and all of the other backing track machines I have seen seem complicated (they probably aren't, but they look it to me haha). This is perfect! Seems VERY user friends and I really love that it is in a pedal platform so I can just run it along side, or ever ON, my pedalboard. This is the best option I have seen for this sort of thing so far. Thank you for this video!
Sounds like this is perfect for your needs! It’s incredibly strong, so no need to worry about delicate things!
can alesis samples can be use to Akai MPD 218 ?
I *love* your teaching! Great to find this channel, was needing some qlab tips. Cheers!
questions: can you use both at the same time? and comment: I think it could get interesting to control it via clips in session view also :o
Thanks so much!! Happy to help! By both, do you mean Ableton and QLab? Or something with QLab? If so, yes absolutely to all! QLab is amazing to run with anything and is remarkably easy. I run QLab with Ableton at the same time via MIDI over Ethernet and it’s great
