Incredible! I'm new to Ableton Live and to using my SPD-SX as a MIDI trigger. I couldn't figure out how to get it to work, and this saved me. Thanks, Aaron!!
By far the MOST helpful video I've seen on setting up the Roland for a live application yet. Whether it be a church or any other setup, this is fantastic!
This was definitely very helpful. I have had mine setup much differently than this, however I will be changing over to this. I may just use a foot switch for my stop button. I have the SPD-SX panic button programmed to foot switch and that has definitely saved me a few times.
Thanks for posting this! Hugely helpful. Are you also triggering from the SPD pads, samples you've assigned to cells in the drum rack (i.e. hand claps, finger snaps, etcetera)? If so, would you mind describing how you overcame the latency btw your stick hits on the SPD pads, and the sounds produced by Live? I can't seem to reduce the latency down enough for me to feel comfortable doing this. Thanks again!
Update: Latency issues triggering samples in Live from the SPD were resolved by using an audio/midi interface to connect the SPD to the Windows laptop running Live. The interface uses the Windows ASIO audio driver instead of the default MME/Direct X driver. The ASIO driver was the difference maker.
Really enjoyed this vid! Are there any main advantages to do it with this method, rather than using an instrument rack with a chain selector to choose different drum racks? Always find it inspiring when people use Ableton in a way that I wouldn't have considered, there are so many different ways to solve the same problem in Ableton and videos like this always help to give me fresh ideas :)
Hey man, that's definitely an option too. If I understand you correctly, that would work in a similar way. I hadn't quite thought of that...haha....just like you were saying. I don't know if there is any major advantage. I guess whatever seems most convenient for you would probably be fine. I'd want the chain to automatically change with the scene launch so I think you'd have to create an automation envelope in a midi clip to change the chain. That would be basically the same thing as sending a program change to the spd-sx I think. I guess to me that feels like an extra layer that you'd have to think about. In the system I'm using, I only have the drum racks enabled that I am using for that set. as long as my program change is switching my pad, it will go to the right drum rack. I wouldn't have to worry about what chain it's on. Also, the more "layers" you have in instrument racks the more clicking around and unfolding windows and devices you might have to do. You got me thinking though. Fun stuff!!!! always stuff to learn!
Ajondrums yeah I would normally put in a midi automation envelope to change the chain selector! Always get that wee bit excited when I find a new way to do something in Ableton haha! Enjoyed the video :)
This is great, thank you so much. Most in depth tutorial ive found so far, and loads of nice clever tricks. RE: sampler setting the velocity sensitivity- You can change the default presets. If you open a sampler with nothing in it, set the volume velcoity to 0% and the volume up to 0db, right click the device name and safe as default. Will save alot of time :D RE: Drum Racks. Why do you seperate them all out into different drums? Its cool and a good idea, but just wondering. Anyways- instead of having the samples of each song in a folder, you could save each one of those banks as a seperate drum rack. If you click and drag a drum rack loaded with samples onto another drum rack, it will place those samples in the correct spots. So instead of clicking and dragging 8 samples every time, its just one click and drag. Also- you can select/edit/delete multiple drums in the rack by opening the little menu icon (the small thingon the left, above the device icon and below the on/off and macro icons). You can select all of the drums at once and delete them, or delete a group. Huge time saver. This isnt knit picking at all, just adding to the savage tutorial with a few extra tips :D
Great Video. Big Thanks for that. I once tried to trigger samples (one shots) that way also but ther is always a bit of latency (I noticed that in the Video as well). It seems to be just a bit, but if I want to trigger Snares/Claps for example it's really annoying that the sample doesn't play exactly on the beat like it would do when you load the samples directly into the SPD-SX. Is it possible to somehow manage that latency problem? That would be a gamechanger for me.
I know I’m 6 years late, but would this also work the same way in arrangement view? Or is there a different/better way to set it up in that view? If anyone has any experience with that, and tips would be great
apparently I can't connect via midi note 2 to the stop buttons. i am using ableton 11. does anyone have an idea? I do everything the same but the tones do not appear in the left column
Hey great Video! Thanx! I still have a problem I can`t figure out. I did everything as instructed, changed all the internal settings like you did. My ableton is receiving Midi signal from the SPDSX - it shows in the corner on the upper right and it shows in the drum rack on this Volume like bar on the very left. MY PROBLEM is that the notes are not in the range of the Drum Rack. It doesn`t trigger any of the notes given, in none of these banks. It just doesn`t trigger any Midi Pads I could put samples on :/ Didn`t have this problem with any device (keyboards). Can anyone help!?
Thanks a lot. This will help me so much to get creative with the Roland. But i have a question. When you start your clips/loops, there is a female voice telling you where you are "vers1" for example. How is this done and how can you set it up that only you can hear it and not the audiance. Same with the click. Would be great when you can put out some more videos about the Roland SPD-SX an Ableton combination
I can't speak for Aaron, but one way would be to drop the sample into a DAW - or even the free version of Audacity. You can then record those queues (as you would another instrument) over the sample; or just record and save generic queues like (1st verse or Chorus etc...) and then import them into the music track. Save the new track as a .wav to accommodate the spdsx's prejudice against .mp3 files:) and there you go... Tedious and time consuming to get everything in place.
Thank you for sharing this amazing information it was very helpful for me But I have a question how do you run your click track from ableton to your spdsx ? Or are you running a separate click playing together with your stemps?
Hey Juan... I believe he has a click track in his stems. So it's not in the SPD and the SPD is used as a MIDI controller to start/stop in addition to triggering samples.
Open Live and select the following menu options: Options -> Preferences -> "Link Tempo Midi". Do you see the SPD-SX as an entry under the MIDI Ports area? If so, click the Track checkbox, then check to see if you see if you are getting MIDI input when you hit the SPD pads.
Hey! This is exactly what I need! Great video. Anyway, one question. I am deciding between SPD SX and Octapad. Same case as you Aaron, I would use it as a Midi controler. Octapad from Roland has got better layout for Ableton´s Drum rack. BUT. It only has 3 user kits, because it is not a sampler, rather percussion pad. Can you set midi note values even to the kits that are loaded with sounds? Because 3 user kits means only 3 banks of midi notes on Octapad then, which is not much.
Great Tutorial, thanks for that! It works so far, BUT mostly, when I beat a pad once, multiple MIDI notes are played/recorded. It seems to be super sensitive. I have tried around with the Padsens parameter, but this is more for volume, I think. Is there a setting in Ableton with that you can set the sensitivity? Did I miss anything in your video? :)
I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to figure it out. Probably with inserting midi notes in arrangement view that automatically get hit as the playhead comes across them - then routing through IAC Driver to a program change on the SPD-SX (check out Churchfront you tube for details on that one) ruclips.net/video/vd6cto4mtjc/видео.html
I am noticing my kits are returning to different midi notes after the spd-sx is shut off and turned back on. Example of this would be kit 17 returning to midi note 66 on pad previously designated to midi note O...baffled how to safe this setup. Anyone feel free to chime in just need some info.
You can edit the launch tempo in each scene, so when you change the scene it changes the tempo. Can be edited by right clicking on the scene, or editing the name like this-- NAME; 120 BPM
How do I use my pad sounds and abletons plug in effects on my apc 40mk2 with the fx knobs????????!!!!!! I have been trying to figure this out and really need some help and to figure ot how I can control my pads sounds with other effect plug ins on my apc 40mk2 fx knobs????? Is this possible? I want more effect sounds going threw my pad sounds using my apc40mk2 with ableton. Any help you could provide me in detail to get me on the right track would be so awesome and much appreciated. Thank you!!!!
Hey do you know if it is possible to connect the roland spd to a light show? I'm seeing that you're importing sounds and so forth. My band runs song samples off the Roland and we are looking for a way to run a light show off of the midi data from it. We have the bottom left and center pad linked to each other (Click & track). The goal is to hit the pad, use Abelton to link it to a the DMX software, use that as a plugin for Abelton to import in and have the lights synced with the sample song we use. How the hell do you get it to say Live Kit??? I hit the pads and it doesn't even trigger any notes on a drum rack despite the yellow square showing it is receiving the information PLEASE HELP!!!
@@dothejordman He just named that drum kit Live Kit. If you're on a kit and you hit the quick menu button, you can choose to rename one of your drum banks on the pad.
Which pads do you have? Is it the Roland SPD-SX? How did you connect The pads to your PC? To record your playing, you would have to use the 1/4” outs going into an audio interface then into Reaper.
