So, what the heck are all these AF settings on the Pentax K-3 Mark III? For this series, we're going to start with AF.S. ALL the settings, including subject recognition, AF restriction, drive or stop lens and all the other settings. Stay tuned for Part 2 when we get into the AF.C settings.

I think it’s time dudes just start listening and thank the lord he has the wherewithal to break this fabulous camera down and explain for us all what the settings and options are in a constructive manner for us all to digest . I dont know what is happening at Pentax , but this guy is and has been the ambassador for Pentax alongside Lee Iveson for a long time so come on Pentax give this guy some respect and his due.
Thank you so much for the kind words and endorsement! Maybe one day, Pentax will reach out to me.
@@KobieMC We live in hope :)
Great info!! Thank you Kobie for explaining modes in detail. There’s so much to the K3Miii, it makes sense to know what’s best to use in certain situations with certain lenses. This video makes it much easier to decipher settings rather than digging in to the manual as our only option.
Kobie, especially with the K3 Mark III getting down to the nitty gritty makes for greater understanding. Just a great Part I and I agree with another commenter that Pentax needs to reach out and show you some love. Great job!
Thank you very much for the kind words!
Great video, most informative. Looking forward to episodes 2+
THIS is exactly what I have been waiting for. Much appreciated Kobie! All the work you put in to this. Looking forward to the next parts.
Hi mate, I know it's AF-S and not AF-C but within the new update (okay, it's old) i found out this firsts races of the season that Using Menú Options 3 and 5 (I got frustrated last year and backed up at 3 and 4) with subject recongnition that works flipping amazing! It's just like having a new camera (again!) Now I need to update my 2nd body to the latest firmaware :)
Also in ISO usabilities it looks to work way better than previous versions of the software as in-box pics of racers at the track aren't burned as the K3-III with a lower software update does.
Have a good day!
Thanks for the video Kobie! I'm looking forward to the next one. I wish someone would've done something like this for the K-1. I'm still learning about my K-1 II.
I really appreciate your taking the time to produce this instructive tutorial. I really felt like I got a lot from it and that I was able to further my own understanding of the Pentax AF system.
Kobie, we are very fortunate that you have decided to tackle the complexity of AF settings. I hope the information can be put on the Pentax Forums site too.
Thank you 🙂
Here's the article I did which is on Pentax Forums.

Another informative vlog 👍, your are super helpful Kobie.
Thank you so much!
A big help and looks like one I will need to view more than once. But thanks so much for doing this. Looking forward to part 2.
Super useful series! Please go on. I'm stumbled over all the plenty of AF system options so suspect not using even 10% of K-3-3 abilities
Very helpful, thank you.
Very interesting. I am trying to ween my self of always using centre spot. I have never trusted the camera to choose the spot. I have progressed from the K20 to the K5 then the K3ii and now the K3iii
Great video!!
Thank you!
Thanks for a great tutorial! I have a question, though. When I'm trying to play with the AF system to know it better, I don't get the info on which point(s) were selected by the camera. I believe I have the same settings as you do, but when I'm checking the image in the playback mode, none of the AF points are red highlighted (as in your video, for example at 16:00). What am I missing?
You're quite welcome!
So there's a few things that need to align for the AF points to be red in the playback screen (make sure you've pressed the info button during playback enough times to bring up the detail screen).
1) If you're using back button focus and you've let go of the back button when you've taken the shot, there will be no active AF point since you stopped the AF the moment you let off the button.
2) If the camera is in AF.C and it's in the midst of micro adjusting the focus, there won't be an AF point in red since, the camera hadn't locked the focus (it's making a slight adjustment due to movement).
3) You have release priority set for the AF behavior. The camera won't wait until the subject is in focus before it fires the shutter. So, it may not be in perfect focus and the camera will still take a photo.
4) Tracking in AF.C. If the camera is actively tracking a subject and it's switching from AF point to another due to the subjects movement, since it's "between" AF points, it doesn't have a lock, so, again, there won't be a red AF point since there was no locked focus at the time the photo was taken.
@@KobieMC Many thanks for the fast reply! Point 1) was the answer: I used to release the AF (back button) before pressing the shutter. If I hold it while taking the shot, it works - red AF points show up. Thanks again :)
Very good as usual! I wish there were more thsn two PLM lenses though.
Just viewed a second time while using my camera. Lots of great stuff, but well done. I find I need to hold the back button focus when taking a shot in order to see focus points in playback. Is there a menu setting so eliminating the need to hold down button. I notice you don't seem to have a need to do that. Again, many thanks for demystifing a lot of K3 Mark 3.
You must have the button pressed in to activate the AF system which will tie into the display. I use the shutter button for the videos since I can't press the back button with my phone shooting the viewfinder.
Thanks for the answer and clearing up my confusion. I tried this method and it works. Again many thanks for your quick response. @@KobieMC
PENTAX-DA16-50mmF2.8ED PLM AW with the Pentax K3 III.. Does the autofocus work in video mode ?
Yes it does. It's not as seamless as you'd think though.

Couple of thoughts - would facial recognition work better if ‘Bodiless Bella’ had hair? I have no idea about how sophisticated the algorithm is but perhaps no hair is tricking it.
Could newer lenses have faster communication with the camera? There is a brief window to communicate data to drive the focus system.
It's possible I suppose. Regarding focus, the only thing newer lenses allow for is faster driving of the focus and quicker focus lock. The rest of the features wouldn't change (such as the subject recognition and eye detection). A larger aperture would help. I'm assuming that even something like the DA 35 2.4 or DA 50 1.8 would fare better than the 18-135 for eye detection (based on how the DA* 16-50 PLM nailed it each time at the 2.8 aperture).
I just tried the same test as yours using subject recognition, AF.S
Sigma 85 @1.4, ISO4000, 1/80 and consistently got two focus points only and never more... one on each eye. It stayed true whether she was on the far left, centered, or high in the frame. My mannequin, Stiffanie, has hair, a possible difference. @@KobieMC
@@warrenmerrill532 LOVE the name you gave her! Aperture of the lens can also be a factor which is what I showed and mentioned between the 18-135 At F/5.6 and the 16-50 at F/2.8. 18-135 didn't do nearly as well as the 16-50.
Ah, gotcha. Well that migh make sense since the AF system is optimized for a 2.8 luminance flux from what I've read. @@KobieMC
"It mostly comes down to the lens"... I just shot over a hundred mostly out of focus pics with my 16-50mm DA+ PLM lens of my son's graduation. Pretty unimpressed. After watching this, I switched off of spot focus, and did AF Fine Adjustment, finally settling on -2 for the sharpest image. Kind of disappointed that I should have to do that with such an expensive lens!
All that aside, this was a gread vid to view. Just wish I had watched it before shooting people instead of landscapes and birds for a change
Unfortunately, with the way a DSLR is designed, there will always be a variance between the AF module and the lens when it comes to focus which is why there's an adjustment. There's tolerances for the AF module and the lens. For example, say the tolerance is 5% front/back focus for the AF module and 5% for the lens before needing adjustment. Well, if you get both a camera and lens that are both at that 5% tolerance, you're now looking at a 10% tolerance, so you'll need to adjust it to bring it back to that 5% tolerance level.
Czy będzie gdzieś jakiś artykuł do poczytania z tego co Pan mówi.
I am planning on it. It'll take a while for me to put that all together though. To get started, you can check out my original article. drive.google.com/file/d/1hWz5toPNmhPp4MURAh3lsR9kjVtAb9AY/view?usp=drivesdk
Now that’s thorough and easy to understand although a couple of re viewings are going to be required I think for it all to sink in. Also I agree with one of the other commenters who made the point that Pentax are seriously remiss in not reaching out to you. Thank you.

Did you forget to mention the face recognition option ?
No, face detection is only available in live view. I'm only talking about OVF shooting since I've covered live view in a previous video.
Too bad I just have a K3ii
I wouldn't put it that way. Both Lee Iveson and myself have gotten fantastic images with the K-3.
Hold for K1iii or pick up used K1ii.
@@DeanHughes-um1um I would wait it out. Worse comes to worse, there's plenty of other camera choices if the K-1 III doesn't tick the boxes you need. BUT, if the leap from K-3 II to K-3 III is any indication of the leap from K-1 II to K-1 III, I think it'll be worth waiting for.
