From the K-1, I stupidly jumped to the Sony A7RIII (ghastly ergonomics). I should have looked at the Panasonic Lumix S1R. Seems to be the closest match to Pentax ergonomics.

Thanks for the video! I am planning to buy this lens. Can you tell me if you shoot video with the Pentax K-3 mark iii? Is this autofocus built in or do you have a cameraman helping you? I found information on the internet that the K-3 mark iii does not have autofocus in video, is that not true?

Have one. Love it. D50O with 16-80. Tokina 11-20, Tamron 70-200, Nikon 200-500. All fit in the main compartment.

Kobie it seems your prediction may be coming true... The K-3mkiii is probably out of production due to parts issues. We don't know which parts. I'm always hopeful. Perhaps it is like the K-70 to KF where some common components need to be updated like the rear screen. However, if it is the AF sensor as you talk about in your vid....then DSLR could be over. If parts are sourced, it may push their prices too high to sell...

After some years I have another issue Kobie, maybe you have faced it, maybe you haven't. So my oldest K3-III doesn't want to show me it's screen (it keeps all black) while in Photo mode. It works great in Video and Live View mode so it is not a screen issue. Everything else works great in Photo mode but I don't know why the main/back screen does not work. Might I have touched something. But I thought I had both cameras set the same. And the other K3-III works perfectly. Maybe you have some ideas I am missing. Thanks for your help and time.

If I really had to choose, I would not choose the M43 system. There are various signs that M43 is also gradually dying. Great to highlight this, Kobie! I had the impression of better precision with Select and didn't know why. I use Select all the time since it's very quick to scroll between XS, expanded 5-point cluster, etc., using the little AF button on the side of the lens mount. Following your advice I have settled on using Expanded select for birds flying and success rate improved a lot. Head-on Z axis focusing remains very tricky, however - the AF often struggles to catch up.

This is one of DSLR problems. While with Oly EM5III I can select very small AF area, with DSLR those AF modules have much larger area for every cross sensor. And thanks to this, it cannot hit eye pupils reliably and mostly locks on some eyelashes or part of face around.

I know this is an antique video at this point, I was just wondering if you ever found a solution to the soft focus issue. I know in the video you hypothesized that the lens just couldn't resolve to 26mp, I was just wondering if you still felt that way or if something has become clear since you made this video. Also somewhat curious about why the red flashlight is leaning more orange than red - is it the color science overall in the Mkiii or a setting that might be changed for the color profile?

Kobie I have been using Small XS for small for my small bird photography. I have one mode dial set for XS single and one for XS Continuous autofocus I do use Spot autofocus on the K3-11 as it does help for small things Using spot on the Pentax K100D the camera sometimes will not let you select the Apature and you have to put the camera in manuel mode to select the Apature it can be a frustrating camera to use at times as it seems to have a mind on it's own about setting Apature The Pentax *istDL tends to under espose in spot metering. It is the only way to get any kind of speed out of the autofocus system I would rather have under exposed pictures as they can mostly be corrected in post processing

..I've been using "XS" since it came out (version 1.70), the difference compared to the "Spot" function is amazing! :)

Very good info Kobie. This would explain why some of my bird shots when focusing on the eye are not in focus. I will have to try out the XS focus point on my next outing.

I think it will come eventually. The longer it goes on the more they cement their niche DSLR market. The rest of the world keeps getting sharper, faster and more computerised. The MK3 will just be a solid update in the Pentax world.

It’s especially hard for me because of my executive function issues, I have one of the worst cases of adult ADHD on record, or I would if I had ever sent the forms in to be recognized by Guinness. It has recently been available in Europe. But it is absolutely not convenient. For each camera you have to buy a license (I have 2 Pentax camera, so 160€...). In case of a camera change you must purchase a new license... If I buy a Nisi graduated filter I can use on all the cameras I own, one expense a great result.

For me, it was driven by my pre-digital lenses, which make more sense un FF. I do have a K50 as a secondary camera. If I were starting from scratch, I would probably seriously consider MFT, I actually would like that as a secondary system.

I think the ISO 100 rule is for beginners who shoot in good daylight outdoor or with flash and with a focus length between 28 and 100. With lowlight, longer lenses, polarizing filter or sports-, wildlife- or bird-photography (which usually implies long lenses) the ISO 100 istotal nonsense. For me the ability to change the ISO was one of the most desirable features of digital when I switched to digital. And I use autoiso a lot.

I see three paths for myself. I can get used gear for many years to come. I can buy a mirrorless system whis allows for adapters for Pentax lenses. Or I can go for Microfourthirds. It would be my dream to get into MFT as a secondary system for travelling because the K1 is just too heavy and too big. What bothers me most at the moment is that third-party lenses are no longer automatically offered in a Pentax-K-variant, which is probably due to the mirrorless boom. No way will I buy a new Canon, Sony or Nikon with all the lenses... It is simply way beyond the budget. So the best is to just relax and not worry too much.

Don't DSLRs have two autofocus systems, one for LV which is like mirrorless and one for viewfinder?

And absolutely not one thing about the firmwares So let's talk about that shall we real quick towards the beginning of the year you had partial access of your ND filter built in prior to that you did have it after the firmware updated 240 you don't after firmware 241 you lost your ability to have Astro focusing so now up to 250 It fixed your focusing for your Astro but now it put all of that behind a paywall so you no longer can do your astrophotography unless you rebuy it again 10 years later just about
