This week we're taking a long, hard look at the ever-popular Fender Classic Player Jaguar with an eye on playability as a major factor. There's a lot to love, but also a lot to dislike about certain features of this model, so strap in -- this one's a doozy.

I LOVE the Classic Player Jags.
I remember particularly a time that I played a used HH one at a Guitar Center once for like an hour and a half, and was just absolutely in love with it. The neck felt like home to me, very similar feeling to my Fender Cyclone. The jumbo frets do take some getting used to, I suspect they used the same fret wire on both those Jags and Cyclones. Bends are a breeze though!
Pickups were great sounding, too. (Atomic humbuckers? Not sure...) They handled everything I threw at it, from Radiohead to Metallica. Wish I'd bought it but it was during my broke days.
Dig the shirt, by the way!

Some years ago I committed to removing the TOM thimbles and installing a normal Staytrem and AVRI vibrato, and now my CP JM is my favourite guitar. At the time when the CP was released options for available offsets were kind of... limited. Run whatya brung, I guess! Thanks for an honest review, Mike!

Thank you for disproving offset myths! Never had a string skip out of the saddle in the 4-ish years I've had my jag or the 1.5 years I've had my jazzmaster. A proper setup is all they need. That's it! Don't treat them like a Strat or Les Paul.
They don't need tunomatic bridges, at worst get a Mastery (which I love). But the design isn't broken, just misunderstood. Hence people changing bridge placement rather than shimming the neck for the break angle, changing all that tasty behind-the-bridge stuff.
Also, that ending riff reminds me a lot of Duel by Swervedriver ;)

I totally miss my jag because of the pickups and just overall feel/sound of the guitar. I had the squier classic vibe. I dont think the pickups are as hot as the Fender CP but if I had to guess the bridge pickup might have been like 9.5k-ish? I've always been blown away by the unique sound/style of Jags every time I play them.

Love the channel and thought this was a fair review, though it terrified me that I’d made a bad choice in getting a similar vintera jag body drilled for an adjustomatic bridge for my parts Jaguar (new to the offset world and hadn’t thought about the radius issue). With a little work and an upgraded bridge, though, I’ve able to get good action, feel and tuning stability. So far so lucky, I guess. I will go for something more traditional if a get a JM down the line, though.

I noticed this on my Cobain jaguar. It had string pinging noises coming from the bridge because it was setup wrong from the guitar store. I notice that the high e string is slightly higher in through out the neck due to the radius of the bridge so, I ordered a mastery bridge and a mastery vibrato and will get them installed to bring this guitar up to the best it can be.

Did the new Fender Jaguar player have the same modern tremolo placement as the classic player in this video? I'd like to buy one and place a single coil on the bridge as I don't like humbuckers, but the lack of the strangle switch and the modern tremolo placement puts me off. Not having the rhythm circuit it's not a big problem to me as I'd rather have a parralel/series switch instead. Love my CP Jazzmaster-just put some Lollars in. The neck is a perfect fit-can play on it all day. However, finding a suitable bridge replacement without doweling and drilling has been near impossible. I landed on a tone-pros with rollers (eliminated the rattle and the string grabbing), but the radius is still mismatched. The adjunko-matic bridge is the epitome of a bad idea. Yet they’re still being installed on many a Fender/Squier offset. Time to retire this very outdated mod. As always, I enjoyed the review.

I've purchased the Squier CV Jag and followed your advice on that setup and it plays beautifully now. I greatly appreciate your knowledge and advice that you hand out on your channel. I recently just purchased a Classic Player Jazzmaster and I'm planning a bridge swap. After some research I'm planning for an American Pro and using some M8 grub screws as the new "thimbles". Is this as a reasonable new bridge setup as I've been reading about?

The classic player trem isn't bad. Like a lot of things offset, it just needs some attention. It has an adjustment underneath to set tension. And you can use a spring to keep it in check as well. Feels solid when setup well

    • @dwightpeters
      @dwightpeters 7 месяцев назад

Just to be clear, I love your videos and have learned a lot from them. Just think people who have a guitar with a classic player trem or who buy one shouldn't think it is bad or be bummed when it just needs a bit of attention. Clearly not everyone can afford staytrem and mastery, etc.. Mine I just adjusted the screw underneath, and it is really smooth now. Yes it sucked bad before doing so--but so do most offsets without a shim. But that is why the screw is there.. The arm pretty much stays in place, but I might get a spring and loosen the tension screw a bit so it will fit the spring to keep the arm more secure. Otherwise I was impressed with it, and it isn't noisy

  • @Artefracture

Wow, the American Ultra JM got a "soft recommend".
I hear what you're saying about the AOM bridge though. I have a modern player with one and I refer to it lovingly as my "Gibson" as it has two humbuckers, no rhythm circuit and a mahogany body. I don't really use the bar much and the Modern Player is used for a band where I tune down the low E to A. I will say that it hangs better with that gonzo tuning than my other JMs, even my AVRI '62 with the Mastery.
I feel that J Mascis was brought up in this video without being mentioned.

My squire classic vibe Jazzmaster doesn’t have any of these issues. The only thing I had to do was put lock tight on the bridge screws so it wouldn’t slowly work itself down. I have 5 other guitars, and the squire classic vibe is the best for the money I have. The only weird thing about it is I got surf green, and the squire surf green isn’t really rich enough. Seems slightly washed out. The only reason I noticed was the fact I have a American Fender strat painted surf green.

I bought my Classic Player Jazzmaster in 2011, when the main-brand Fender JMs were limited to AVRI '62 (out of my price range), MIJ/CIJ (difficult to come by on eBay at the time), Artist models from J. Mascis and Elvis Costello, and Classic Player. Had an eBay Horror Story where the guitar arrived to me with the truss rod flipped totally around which rendered it unusable. I got a REALLY nice Warmoth neck for it with big brass frets, satin nitro finish, maple fingerboard, and graphite nut. A couple years ago I replaced the o-Matic bridge with a Mastery. Fabulous axe, minus the threaded trem collar and "technically not" Jazzmaster pickups - which I think have a lovely warmth and singing output, so no matter - and I don't know if you would want to waste time on a quasi-redundant review on the JM when you've done the Jag here, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the CP Jazzmaster pickups.

Hey Mike, do the Fender Vintera model Jaguars have the same issues you found with the Classic Player Jaguars? I don’t believe the Vintera model uses the tune-a-matic bridge. Not sure about the location of the vibrato on a Vintera?

Hi! You said you would make improvements on the Classic Player Jag Special. Did you do it? I am super interested in increasing my jag (especially bridge) ! Thank you !

What would you reccomend to make this guitar better? Would it be worthwhile to replace the bridge at all? Or just dial in the setup as best as possible with the guitar as is, stock. I bought 2008 CP and it seems to play great, but I got it used and there is a buzz stop added that I want to take off and am worried it might open up issues. I’d greatly appreciate your 2 cents!

Hi thanks for your great informative input on the Jaguar. Could you help me out a little please ? I’m looking to buy a Jaguar. Which is the best Jaguar out of the box that doesn’t have the flaws as demonstrated in this video ?
    Thanks mate.

I'm pretty sure I know what artist you're talking about and he also has an adjust-o-matic bridge on his Jazzmasters as well as the action being STUPIDLY high. I really don't know how he plays them as well as he does!

New to the channel and glad I found you as a lover of offsets and proud CIJ Jazzmaster abuser.
Hats off to a fellow SSBS Fuck Overdrive user. It's my favorite OD, even more than the Interstellar Overdriver. So, are you the proud owner of the Christmas Story one?

The problem is that there aren't many drop-in replacement bridges for these. The models you mentioned sadly don't work with the tuneomatic posts, without some serious modification. Staytrem used to make a drop-in for these, but has long discontinued them.

Any good tech should be able to fill and drill, but yeah, sad there aren't more drop-in solutions

@@Puisheenhi Puisheen- don’t know if you will see this but I’m looking to trade for one of these- as of December 2022 are there any 9.5 radius drop in bridge replacements?
I’d not am I correct in assuming one would ‘only’ have to fill it with an appropriate dowel/glue and then drill for whatever bridge (mastery etc)?

I was wanting to know about the American Series guitar Jazzmaster. I am looking at the American 1962 Fender Jazzmaster Reisue and some people make it sound as if you need to replace the bridge with a better one and the strings to 11-50 so as the low E string doesn't break? The seller has a Mastery Bridge in stock and from the factory is strung with 10/46 strings. Not sure if they carry Gabriel Tenorio JM50 Electric Guitar Strings 11-50? Do I need to do all these upgrades as some people suggest or is this American model OK out of the box? Thank You!

I love this guitar. the one I bought came with a sea foam green pick guard. I just replaced it with a tortis shell from an American made.

I can't believe they have a 14'' radius bridge on a 9.5 neck that seems kinda shady on fenders part. I got my own issues with a 9.5 nut I put on a MIK strat 12'' neck lol. I didn't even know fender had necks that flat

PS. I filed the saddles to lower the outer strings to better match the radius to fretboard and too the edges off the others and the trem works great and it stays in tune, but I'd prefer to swap it out. Seems like Staytrem is saying theirs doesn't fit Adjustamatic mountings... any advice on replacements other than Mastery?

I don't recommend most rollers, which have shallow grooves and often exhibit even worse rattle issues. Also, if you don't maintain them with proper lubrication the rollers stop rolling, and they're a 12 inch radius as well

Filling and drilling, not something I'd recommend for most folks
