- This week I want to tell you about a special, surprising job that came my way back in February. Never in a million years could I have expected this, and I am ever so grateful for it. This 1965 Fender Jaguar belongs to Glen Hansard, who is perhaps my favorite singer-songwriter ever. His music meant a lot to me over the years, so I don't have to tell you just how cool it was to see my work in his hands. But I will, anyway.
Thanks as always for your support. I couldn't do it without you!

Mike is such a good ambassador for these instruments. He gets me excited about my jazz master every time I watch his videos.
Whoa! As an Irish guy who grew up with Glen Hansard in the my cultural consciousness, incredibly trippy to see someone really fan over someone who is also one of my idols! Really good vid, you can feel the enthusiasm you have for even the most tiniest details. You're really good at your craft~~~
I had never heard of The Frames before this, of course I had to go and listen to this song. I am floored, what an amazing song.
Ah! So cool. "Once" was a huge deal for me back in the mid 2000s. An early girlfriend introduced me to that film as it was one of her favourites. Quickly became one of mine too! I should revisit some of Glen's music so many years later. Thanks for the reintroduction through such a cool professional moment for you, Mike!
That is a super cool Jaguar. Thank you, Mike, for selling me on offsets. I picked up a used Vintera Jaguar a few weeks ago at a very reasonable price. After a quick neck shim and with some heavier strings, it plays like a dream. Your setup videos have been a tremendous help to me.
That’s amazing! To have worked on a guitar that belongs to someone you admired musical work is an incredible opportunity and it sounds incredible
I just found a new channel!!!! LOve it!!! And love Glen!!!!
Used to hang with Glen in the East Village, NYC back in the 90s. Always a gentleman and a positive spirit. Played a bill with him, but can't recall which joint. Good days. Thanks, Mike. I've learned so much from you in the past year or so. I was wary about that wound G on my Jazzmaster with the Mastery bridge, but I'm going to give it a shot now. Always excited to watch your videos. While my wife and daughter binge Bridgerton...I binge Puisheen! Cheers, Mate!
Richard, this is such a wonderful message to read. Thanks for adding to my stock of good cheer! Loved the story. Thanks for watching!
Fender Jaguar. I think are most beautiful guitars ever made by Fender ever!! The shape! Wow!!
Like 1950's American cars.
Love the Chrome and the quirky tremelo. Love the back of the bridge. The effects you can create playing on that part of the strings. Wow!! Especially with a lot of Fuzz and maybe a Slő or spring reverb.
Just a very versatile instrument.
Love Jazzmaster for all the same reasons. I think I prefer the sound of a jazzmaster. Especially the American pro 11 Jazzmaster.
But Jaguars rule. Kurt Cobain sig Jaguar my favourite. I think that's the model Kurt modded that you have in today's video?
So nice!!💙
Outrageous! I wish I could play it. Bravo, Mike!
I just love a tortoise guard on a black Fender. I dare say better looking than an Olympic White/Mint Green combo.
I almost bought a 64 jazz bass,black w/tortoise guard and I cant even play bass.lol
Wow, wow, just wow. Glen's Jag!
Saw this man live in Florence, Italy with EdVed in front of 50.000 audience. Man, that acoustic was fckn loud and so was he. Amazing man, human, amazing music. 🖤
Absolutely loved this. Great playing on "the Cost". Pretty sure I saw Glen play that Jag, or another like it, on the Earthlings tour with EV and in the opening slot before him on "Revelate". What a thrill.
Seeing Glen H at the Sydney Opera House 6 or 7 years ago was one of the highlights of my life, probably in the top 3 gigs of thousands I've seen
Wow, what an honor and experience for you! I love Glen’s music, and that will be the case even more so now knowing you play a part in it. So cool.
Wow that is so awesome. To see the guitar you worked on framed like that on your wall in the hands of such an artist would give me goosebumps everytime.
This guitar is absolutely gorgeous. Dreamy.
It always makes my day when I see a Happy Mike :)
So cool that you worked on Glen's Jag! Made it out to night two of the Earthlings shows here in Seattle. Glen (and the Jag) sounded great! I've seen Glen several times now - he is always amazing.
Wow incredible opening intro! That's why I voted for you as President of United Federation of Planets on Ryan Burke's 60 Cycle Hum polling page. 🤩🤩🤩
Just Wow!! 🎸
love your videos, Mike. are you ever going to make another workshop vid where you go through the entire process of setting up a guitar? Those were so informative and fun to watch.
Wonderful project and commendable how you tackled it! Thank you for sharing Mike! Warms the heart that you got to connect with Glen...a brilliant singer songwriter....really happy for you!
I absolutely LOVE the selfie you have with him at the end. How special! Well done :D
Super happy for you getting to work with Glen, he's criminally underappreciated here in Ireland. 'Set List' is still probably my favourite live album ever. When that amp catches fire in 'Fitzcarraldo', pure magic. I've seen him in small and large venues alike, and the guy can captivate a room no matter what. Beautiful guitar, and amazing playing by you as always!
That last jam took me to my nostalgic emotional place - nice job.
Nothing like having a coffee and watching Mike
This sounds so good i've favourited it and have came back to it a few times just for the tone in the intro. Absolutely holy grail of Jag crisp bitey jangle sounds 😁
Wow, What a sound, Smoking, a nice Guitar. I love Glen’s music too, a talented man!
Hi Mike! You definitely Inspire. Hope Seattle is great!
Beautiful guitar, wonderful music. Thank you for sharing with us!
Your enthusiasm is infectious! Great vid, and once again, you seem like you really have LOADS of knowledge on guitar tech-ery 😊. Cheers to you.
So special!!! Thanks for sharing Mike!
Soooo cool!! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Growing up in Ireland, the Frames were an ever constant presence. Revelate was our anthem. Hansard is a legend and a phenomenal solo performer. He does great work highlighting issues like homelessness in Dublin and busks every Christmas for charity. Loved the vid Mike.
Glen’s jag! Awesome. Been waiting for this one 🙌🏻
Incredible job, Mike!!! Well done!
This is so cool. Congrats, Mike!
Thanks for sharing that experience. We really are all connected 🙂
Had to do a repeat viewing on this, stoked for you sir! The Jag sounds killer after your hard work and admittedly your list of Glen’s was pretty solid
Many moons since I’ve seen you. Whatta treat AND a fantastic tale! As always you sound fantastic! Best vibes from Knoxville!
Very exciting! Cheers!
I remember seeing one of his movies. But mainly remember him through Eddie vedder.
So rad. Everyone should watch The Commitments!
Fantastic!
fallen from the sky -- i always have to play it more than a few times (avoided the word 'once' there ha ha oops no i didnt). the movie got me through some rough times. great work on a great musician's tool! keep doin the good work :)
Great work Mike.
Such tasty playing in the intro.
Fantastic video!
Dude this channel…is so amazing. I wish you were around (and the internet hahaha) when I was playing as a kid. Sooooo much offset info. I even love the little things like naming the riff and what effects you use. Keep it up
Aye jagstang aye!
My ex-girlfriend introduced me to the The Frames back in '07, pulling me up out of my metal haze. "The Cost" blew my fucking mind. I'd never heard someone sing with such incredible depth of emotion - that gruff, gristly voice breaking into wails of desperation. GAH! "Falling Slowly" is still my go-to whenever I pick up an acoustic.
Incredible jam at the beginning!
Very cool. Definitely a chance afforded to few.
Cool stuff!
Rad!!! Huge fan
Pretty sure that I said this when you first worked on the guitar but I'm glad you and Glenn connected following the guitar signing incident you mentioned in your guitar collection vid!
lmao I wonder if he knows about that
That opening song!!!
That’s a cool video.
Re-flowed all the solder joints and took 220 grit (!!!!) to the plates jeezy creezy
I installed Stew-Mac 148s on my '59 Jazzmaster. Perfect fret size for a vintage Fender in my opinion. Slightly wider and slightly taller than vintage frets, but not by much. I also use a wound G on the '59 with a Mastery bridge. Never heard about there being an intonation problem with this set up, and mine seems to work just fine. Final note. Just got around to watching the movie Cyrano last night. Towards the end is a great scene on the eve of battle that features the best song in the movie. Three different soldiers sing the verses. They know they are going to die, and they are singing their last letters to their wives. Glen Hansard is one of them. At first, I thought - I know who that is, but who is it? - and then it hit me - Glen Hansard!
Hansard, Close, Howerton, Gary, Ross. lolol
All good Glen(n)s
Read an interview in the '90's with Larry Cragg, Neil Young's guitar tech, and he said Neil prefers some fret buzz on his acoustics.
I haven't seen that interview but that makes sense!
I love the commitments but knew nothing of Glenn's music. I'll definitely check it out. Interested in the finish, in that arm wear it looks like black over gold? If it isn't, I might steal the idea as that would be VERY cool.
I went with a Staytrem on my Jaguars after being told can't use wound G with Mastery. Where did the notion that Mastery was incompatible w/ wound G come from? Good to know for future, thanks Mike
Goals
Great video!!! I just started playing guitar and am loving it, where did you get that guitar rack in the background? Thank you
Rippin jam!
Wait I just realized you’re the dude from My Name is Jonas Brothers, right? That is the best Weezer cover band I’ve seen.
Oh my god Jordan you just made my day. When Sean T gets off tour with Ann we’re getting the band back together!
@@Puisheen yes definitely. The gear accuracy was so on point it was amazing. I’ve never seen anyone recreate the Brian Bell’s SG. That was awesome.
GOD THE TONE
It's a very good one
@@Puisheen yes, quite nice
In the words of J Mascis "anything has enough sustain with a big muff"
KING OF OFFSET GUITARS
Thanks Mike, really interesting video and I loved the intro! 😃Going to try 12s on my Pro 2 Jazzmaster if anyone could recommend any?
My most-used 12s are Ernie Ball and DR, but Glen's D'Addarios were excellent on this one
@@Puisheen Thanks, loved the sound of Glens on that beautiful Jaguar, will give those a try 👍
What is that chord you're playing in the intro (example at 0.29) sounds like a 7th type thing but couldn't replicate it! Standard tuning? Sounds flippin' awesome xx
I wish I had it, the vintage prices are rapidly rising up. I’m gonna try to buy an American vintage Jaguar. I’ll change the pickups and get a mastery bridge. So 600extra. 😢
12:20 - should the GROUND wire go to the bridge thimble or to the plate covering the vibrato or to the actual the vib-assembly itself were the strings are threaded through on JMs and jags?
I think this guitar was on reverb. Or one just like it. I’ve been coveting it.
My second string keeps breaking. I put a 1deg shim. Not sure if the bridge is too high. What can I do?
Do you use Couch Guitar straps? Some of those straps look familiar...
WOOOWWWWWW Danzig is gonna be REAL pouty when he hears this list...
A+, standing O and 500 points to Gryffindor on behalf of Gary/Ross
“Danzig mother****er!!!!”
LMAO
Mike, I have a 2018 Fender Jaguar lacquer, a model which I believe was based on the '65. Have you had any experience with these? If so, did you notice problems with the pop-in trem arm making 'clicking' sounds against the metal sleeve? Is there a quick fix for this, or would it be better to swap it out for an AVRI or equivalent?
Those import terms are not quite as well made as originals and current AVRI/US production. They often exhibit fit issues between the arm and collet and generally aren't as operationally smooth as one might expect. I have another video on the 'Hammer Trick' here that might help!
By any chance were the strings you used Mammoth Slinky? Or a close facsimile...
Standard D'Addario 12-52 on this one
@@Puisheen OK thank you!

Oh and Emily Harris is going to serve as you Vice President. She already saluted on so it has to happen.😆😆
Have you been in Brno? 😀
nxt time try soaking the adhesive overnite in WD40, you’ll be surprised.
Don't forget Glen Campbell
Mike, I wrote you on the Mike and Mike contact form. Can you look for that email (from Scott Anderson) please and get back to me? Thanks
Oh hey, sorry about that. I don't receive messages via the shop. Instagram is the only way to get in contact with me.
Tump 2024!
Yeah thats why you dont want those nightmare switches on the guitar..Hence Leo made the stratocaster...Iffy switches i call them.If they are on they don work.Had a kingston 12 string electric and it was a switch nightmare. If you like switches on your guitar well get an ol teisco.
