- This is definitely one of my dream guitars, but mostly because of the finish. In my hands today is a lovely 1966 Jaguar in one of the coolest custom colors, Charcoal Frost Metallic. In this video I want to tell you about this special finish option, why it's cool and different from modern CFM, and why it's so hard to pin down exactly what it is due to aging.

awesome topic! I'm obsessed with charcoal frost metallic, too. I refinished my jazzmaster (partscaster) and my hardtail Strat (partscaster) in CFM. For those looking for a good option that gets really close, if not perfect(?), go to an auto paint seller and get them to mix a couple of cans of color code M1744A...thats the color code for the color paint that Lincoln used on one of their models. I saw some charts online of auto paint codes cross referenced with fender colors....and since Fender was known to have used automotive paints, I think it might be your best bet....and it's just like in you say in the video, it is somewhat blue, definitely more than the modern CFM. Since nitro is hard to find, I used 'acrylic enamel', put in an aerosol can. It's definitely similar to nitro, it has checked, and chips pretty easily...it behaves similarly to the 2012-2017 American vintage series from Fender.

As a kid, my dad was consistent with wiping the strings/neck down every time he finished playing his '52 Les Paul. I always thought it was so cool how the string path looked virtually new versus the rest of the body/headstock having that yellowed patina. That's the fun of nitro, it ages how you use it!
I have a 66 Lake Placid Blue Jaguar and it has indeed turned a shade of green through the years. Nice Jaguar you have there!

Really cool piece of Fender history! It ticks all my aesthetic boxes for jaguars: matching headstock, bound neck, block inlay, and rad color.
I agree. If an offset isn't B & B with a matching headstock, I'm not interested.

That's a dream guitar! 1966 is the birthyear of my mom and I've always wanted to own both a jazzmaster and Jag from this year! Of course candy apple and charcoal frost would also be wondrous finishes for them

After looking and looking trying to find it and seeing that some people just use Dupont touch up paints to emulate it, I'm happy that Oxford sells Charcoal Frost Metallic now in both aerosol and 8 oz. tins! ☺️🥰
I'd love to put the guitar under a densitometer and match that paint exactly - I love the blue undertones of that CFM. Let's also take a minute to admire that gorgeous fretboard too!

Fender has a color called “old lake placid blue” that is more aqua. I really love that color

My main Stratocaster is a charcoal frost metallic finished in nitro. It’s aged incredibly over the years.

Just a comment: the KO finish on the Marr Jaguar actually means "Kandy Orange". Definitely inspired by aged CAR.

Was hoping to see you do a review on the new American Vintage II 1966 jazzmaster... instead you just bring out an original. Well played sir.
At some point I did realize I had this waiting to be edited and figured, "Hey, if I can't get one of the new ones I guess an original will have to do!"
I have a 2011 American Standard Strat in Charcoal Frost that is the same darker/bluer hue and a 2018 MIJ hybrid JM in Charcoal Frost that is the more modern version of the color, lighter/brighter with sometimes almost a tiny hint of a purple hue against the tort pickguard. Always wondered why they differed so much if they are supposed to be the same color.

I bought a Charcoal Frost Metallic American Standard Strat back around 2008 when they switched out the American Series with the American Standard (actually, they did the CFM finish at the tail end of the Series and into the new Standards). Anyway, it's a beautiful finish that's a dark grey with a blue undertone. I assume the poly finish will keep the color as it is for the most part.
The American Series did bring one thing to the American Standard relaunch in 2008(American Standard was also 87-2001) it brought the bent steel saddles back, and ditched those blocks that don't set up as well.
Regular folk: "About 5 min"

Hey man ! I just bought a 2002 Jaguar Japan, and I found out that the neck was shimmed with just a partial piece of wood, not a full pocket shim. Do you think it could have caused any issues ? The neck looks flat but I'm just not qualified enough to tell if it's alright. I've got 2 fender guitars shimmed that way, and I'm thinking of replacing the shims with stewmac shims. Is it worth it ? If yes how do you tell how much angle you need ? Thanks a lot for your help :)

this and sherwood green are my two favourite colours from Fender forsure! A new gretsch like Cadillac green jag or jm would be a dream as well though or racing green! Also wish global warming would works its way to us in Canada lol. just kidding!

I bet the new charcoal frost is the same color. The nitro has probably yellowed with age and caused color variation.
Does Nitro aging/yellowing account for any of the color difference between vintage and modern Charcoal Frost finishes?
I would say not so much, since they're using entirely different paints these days than the original paints available at the time.

@@Puisheen Cool. I got an AO 60s jag and it's the best guitar I've ever had, but was a frightening amount of money to spend at the time (your review really sold me on it). I eventually want to get a second jaguar to keep in Eb standard, thinking the Marr might be a good choice - something a little different.
Weirdly the second best guitar I have (honestly could be tied with the jag) is a fake fender thinline telecaster that some guy did a really crappy relic job on. Looks like he drank too much robitussin and went at it with one of those mystery tools that are in a deluxe swiss army knife, and then got a little pee on the pick guard. It has a misplaced fender decal and sounds unbelievable. Got it for next to nothing. I only have 3 guitars so it's weird to rank them anyway.
Maybe it's just me, but I love the ugly metallic brown colour! But I also like the poopy brown mocha finish from the '70s so what do I know?

does anyone make a bridge mute for a jazzmaster?
Waterslide makes a rubber bridge, but as far as a mute goes there's really not enough room between a Jazzmaster pickup and bridge to fit the Jaguar mute and still be able to set appropriate pickup height. You might look into, say, a Warmoth body instead as they've moved the bridge pickup about 1/2" away from the bridge for some odd reason. That might be enough room to install a Jag mute

Fender had the best colors back in the day. All the metallics are amazing. But if still take a 59-65 sonic blue Strat if I had the choice. Unfortunately sonic blue is one of those colors that can be drastically different from what it originally looked like. I once owned a daphne blue Strat that had kept its color perfectly- should’ve never sold that one:(
