When General James Mattis was 2nd Marine division Commander, he would drive around on base on the weekends giving junior Marines rides from the share-a-ride bus stops on base. Most of them did not recognize him and would talk freely about the stuff going wrong in their battalions. Then crap would hit the fan on Monday morning when Mattis would call the battalion commander in. Quickest way to get fired was to B.S.or yes-man General Mattis when asked a question. Many Marine generals are like that... You're too busy to waste time on useless staff hot air
These videos help tremendously with my long days that I'm stuck in this truck cab. Obviously, most of the time, i can't watch, i have to just listen unless I'm stopped for a break, but even just audio is a huge help!
Thank you guys for your service The song "The Ballad of the Green Berets," sung by Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler, hit No. 1 on the U.S. music charts on this day in history, March 5, 1966.
Bill Murray sang a few bars from that song in Caddyshack during his sniper scene with the gopher. Who can forget the ammo cans (six packs of beer) he carried during this mission.
I enjoyed it, been in the military for 23 years and it was very nice to see this angle. I laughed my ass off but I’d definitely watch 13 hours or outpost repeatedly.
Alls Quiet on The Western Front was fire, it really shows the magnitude and scale of war, but also the waste of life and how cheaply its treated in war, excellent movie
Iv been bingeing this channel for the last 2 days , awesome ! But what i really love is how you guys really break down in great detail the mindset and tactics of a soldier or operator, that to me is the stand out quality of this channel. Thanks for everything you guys do!!
All quiet on the western front is an amazing movie. One of the top 10 war movies in my opinion. I know you guys won't be disappointed. Look forward to seeing your reaction..... thanks for all the entertainment guys
Are you talking about the 1930s one or the 1979 one? Because the one Netflix just made is horrible and isnt even All Quiet on the Western front, they took a few details and just used the name and they made somthing that is basically completely different film.
I didn't like it that much. It's a shock propganda. I read the book to. The movie just took the most horrible stuff from the book, added even more, and made the whole movie a string of these moments. While the reality was that the day to day average of a soldier there wasn't THAT horrible. It's just that it lasted for YEARS is the biggest tragedy. But the movie foregoes the horror of nuance for repetitive hits with sledgehammer in the face
As a left leaning person I love you guys. I don't base whether I like someone based on their political opinions though. But I hear what you are saying about how the left acts hence why I try not to associate with them too much or tell them what my right leaning opinions are. If the people that don't know me very well found out I was very pro 2A they would want me crucified.
All quiet in the Western front is one of the most crude and raw war movie that I've seen.!!! 🥇🥇please do that one guys !!! Love your reactions!!! You guys are great team 👍👍👍
You guys seriously need to do Apocalypse Now Go for the Director’s cut and make it a 1.5 hours Beers & Breakdowns episode… Kurt needs to be in on that one too!

If the boss has a sense of humor and isn't a fuckhead who drinks his own kool-aid then it's not so bad. The ones under him suck ass because they're the biggest tryhards who are always kissing up to them
Hey Buck, Todd here! I read your first book and I’m an 11B. I had a VERY similar upbringing and dude keep fucking killing it!!! Love to see you on the book tour for the second one! If you’re near PITTSBURGH I hope to make it! Until then I wish your team & family the best!
My father was an Army Scout Ranger in the Philippine Army but when he was promoted to Major he got reassigned as a Provost in a Division. One time there was a General who was about to get arrested for cowardice when he tried to runaway when rebel military troops attacked the camp. The MGen. was full of excuses to stall the arresting MP so my father told him, "with all due respect Gen. don't let me drag your ass". He said that was the happiest day of his life as a Soldier. 🤣
I was a 92G for six years. For some reason I wanted to do my job on deployment. "God" didn't pick me. Now I'm very thankful for my experience. I love my military family. I don't talk at work anymore, because I want to keep my job. But beers in the driveway, I speak freely, lol.
Yall should do the Korean War Fil Tae Guk Gi (The Brotherhood of War)! Its a movie from the earlier 2000s and it's a great war film following two brothers who are drafted into the Korean army to fight the war. They fight in many environments and it follows them from how horrible the fighting and the desperate situation on the Pusan perimeter was for the koreans, to how they had to retreat from Commie China after getting close to chinese border. It's an awesome movie and i recommend you check it out.
Love the shows guys and the insight from Buck and Kurt is always knowledgeable and most of the time hilarious as well and Able is great with his civilian input too. Keep it up and appreciate all that everyone does to bring us these thoroughly entertaining shows 👌👍❤️
This was an outstanding movie about how man can be so full of themselves that they are delusional about the actual results. This movie happens to be about a general loosely based on Mccrystal but really its about any powerful person and how they deviate from reality in their outcomes. It was a very funny movie, but it wasn't supposed to be historically accurate. Its literally just about hubris.
My son a BRAT told me to watch it. Between the constant sniper checks in the beginning and how boring it was i could only make it half-way through. POG's always tried to get on my ranger rolls 😂
I am far to the left. Vegan for over 20 years, thinks state should run housing, energy, transportation and a bunch of other things that are essential to survive. And I think Bucky seem to be a great dude. He thinks for himself, he is humble af, compassionate and so on. Some people will act like the “other side” is completely bonkers, but character is more important than stance on certain topics imo.
Loss of freedom and manipulation. I willingly gave my rights away to the government, i earned em back. I’ve seen what a war torn corrupt country looks like. I see straight through the bullshit which is our own government, left, and right. I will always lean a little right more than i am middle, because i swore to defend the constitution forever. Most veterans feel this way. I hate both parties. But your left side wants us enslaved a little more than the latter. Still, fuck em both
@@shawnthomasbrown3867 there isn’t much of a left side in usa. And they definitely don’t want to enslave anyone. Well, capitalism will enslave people by making sure people live paycheck to paycheck, and by doing so they are kept in check and willing to give up time with their kids, time for hobbies, travel long distances for work and so on. And I am no democrat, I’m not even american. But if you take the time to look into what proposals democrats put forward and vote for, and what republicans vote against. You will surely see that while both parties are corporate shills, one is just blatantly so and literally vote against everything that will make life better for the common man, and for anything that will let companies screw people over even harder. Even if you ask people where they stand on policy, a lot of people on the right lean towards democrats. But politics in usa is more identity politics than anything. And I do agree that some things on the left is bonkers.
I loved this movie. As a piece of satire it's great, from the outset of the movie it shows the problems with the war in Afghanistan. One great quote from an analyst of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is we didn't fight a campaign to win. We fought the same campaign every spring in the hope something would change.
38:25 The third guy was running towards a rifle that was leaning against a pillar. If he was going grab it or not is maybe meant to be ambiguous to the viewer.
as a Cpl I once had to escort a Brigadier Gen. around our med facility on ops. i was a little nervous and i guess it showed. he looked at me and said something like "relax, the reason your walking me around is your medical officer said you were solid and besides I got General shit to worry about, so you are kinda below my sight line." He said it with a smile, and a week later my guys got a pallet of gatorade bottles sent to them from him. we had been out for 2weeks eating rations and warm water so i thought that was cool of him.
You guys should definitely review All’s Quiet On The Western Front. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the film. From individuals I know in the film industry. Wondering if it’s as good as they say myself? Lol
Generals are promoted by Congress not the military, and the rank belongs to the job. So a colonel selected to command a division could skip one star, ora one star appointment to a 3-star billet ( job ) could skip 2-star. Not uncommon. Wonder why Mattis never made 4-star Commandant? Politics.
All quiet on the western front…. UFF…Now that is a tough one guys. Please do more Band of Brothers or…… The Pacific…. And big greetings out from Thailand
I was there when the general took over and it was a soup sandwich. Even some of the fire bases and Fobs he shut down lead to so many more fire fights on hwy 1 in Afghanistan. The bases he shut down kept most of the bad guys on the other side of the mountains.
I listen to bears and breakdowns during my drive home. Saves me from falling asleep. I also listened to your other stuff, but I already served 8 years as a Navy Corpsman. If I could do it again I go special forces, specifically SWCC.
You hit the nail on the head about generals and how shit rolls downhill, while stationed in Germany we were going to be inspected by a 1 star and I swear everybody lost their fucking minds, the week leading up to it you’d swear the entire battalion was on extra duty, they cleaned and repaired more shit in that 1 week then they had the previous 2 years I was there, and I just happened to be lucky enough to pull guard duty on tue side gate into the base, it was my turn to be up and man the gate lock and check IDs, it was 0300, I had the 0200-0400 shift, when all of a sudden the door flies open and in walks the full bird and the base CSM, I hadn’t tied my boots because all you do is sit in a chair at a desk and look at the empty video screen on the chance of someone coming to the side gate wanting to get on base, they didn’t say anything to me directly about it so I’m thinking ok, it’s cool, we’ll no, it wasn’t, I got my ass chewed off by Top, then my platoon SGT, then my team leader, I swear I got every shitty detail there was, seems they couldn’t keep my name out of their mouths, 😅
'All Quiet on the Western Front' was a good movie for what it is. People will argue between the original, the remake, the remake of the remake, and the book. I think there's something to take from each version of the story. The newest version on Netflix has the advantage of adding more "shock" to the story. Advances in practical and special effects, public tolerances, etc. have allowed movies to potentially be more gritty and bloody in a way that can portray war in an accurate and respectful way. I think there are parts you guys will be able to relate to and whatever you can't relate to, you can probably at least speak to it. Thank you for what you do and keep it coming.
@6:44 "Why would you pick a general to make a movie out of?" There is actually one war movie which I think communicates the "General Officer experience" really well: Gettysburg. Gettysburg really shows you the thought processes of men grappling with the problems of commanding thousands of soldiers in a situation of uncertainty. I've loved this movie since the 90's but didn't really "get it" until I became a field grade officer myself AND spent significant time in a flag officer's HQ. But that was a US Army that was fighting a peer conflict 150 years ago, so.....not the same as what these 30-years-active-service politicians-in-unform/high-energy ass-kissers are experiencing today.
Sean, great work as always. It would be great for you guys to break down Netflix's All Quiet On The Western Front as others in this comment section have mentioned.
2:34 I don't think portrayals are necessarily down a Left/Right divide. Generation Kill for example was also a rolling stone piece but painted most of the marines as pretty sympathetic characters. Some of the best journalists are able to do interesting profiles of people or groups they disagree with without turning it into a hatchet job. Jon Ronson and Louis Theroux (especially his earlier stuff) are some great examples of this. I think the problem with the McChrystal is that the general and the staff forgot that their positions were political and not just military. Journalists on both sides of the political divide have a nose for a scoop and to hear McChrystal and his staff openly trashing the Obama administration is a scoop. For the left it's a news story against the afghan war and for the right it's a news story against the Obama administration. The whole idea of giving a journalist unrestricted access to the commander of US troops in Afghanistan is a bad idea. There's a good reason that senior political and military leaders don't usually give journalists such unrestricted access.
Generals are premadomnas. I used to work at Hanscom AFB as a civilian, i worked at the loging facility (has been shut down) and i once was checking in a man who reserved a standard room but wanted the general's cottage and that weekend so happened we had a steam outage so there was no hot water until 8 or 9 am the next day. However the fitness center had running water so if he absolutely had to, he can utilize that shower. The man flipped out which i offered to make a reservation at another hotel but his current reservation will be lost and we were completely booked (a flight crew and snow plow guys from the town were staying) and the man basically threatened my job and i ended up getting fired. I defended myself to the man, i basically told him "the policy is designes this way so people on orders are priority 1, and without specific orders, i cant move him". I found out later on that the general was retired and i basically got let go over spilled milk.
To be fair, it would be really hard to get more soldiers supplied in Afghanistan. There was a reason why the Soviets never had more than a 100,000 troops in the country for the ten years they were there. There is practically no infrastructure, everything has to be flown in or moved from Russian and 'stan rail networks, which are limited in that part of the world. The logistics of the place are the biggest problem next to the hostile population.
I'd push back on going to war for a nefarious reason. Innocent people died. Your friends didn't come home to their families. Family's on both sides were destroyed. Not to mention the endless enemy's we created for generations to come.
If you're going to watch "All quiet on the Western front" I'd suggest the 1979 one, not the 2022 one. The 2022 one cuts a lot of the deeper themes and messages in favour of simplified story and showy visuals.
I liked this move, and here's the reason why... I was there in Afghanistan when this was happening. As a CA assigned to a RC-South G-9 HQ I knew that none of that would work and we just need to pack and leave. Every day I thought that they were clowns. I saw BG Sinclair getting fired for his affairs with his ADC. This move shows it perfectly.

29:40 Yeah, I've never seen...or even heard of...any general responding that way to anyone under their command.
All Quiet on the Western Front was an amazing movie. I actually got the book.
All quiet on the western front is an excellent book and a pretty good movie totally worth doing one of your excellent break downs
Yess do all quiet on the western front, thanks for the videos and laughs!!
You guys should definitely review All’s Quiet On The Western Front. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the film. From individuals I know in the film industry. Wondering if it’s as good as they say myself? Lol
Yes to all quiet on the western front
Zohan- we've been at war for 2000 years, how much longer can it last.
Generals are promoted by Congress not the military, and the rank belongs to the job. So a colonel selected to command a division could skip one star, ora one star appointment to a 3-star billet ( job ) could skip 2-star. Not uncommon. Wonder why Mattis never made 4-star Commandant? Politics.
Definitely watch all quiet on the western front
Do “All is Quiet on the Western Front”. You should watch the old one first from the 1920s then watch the new one.
McChrystal did get the cover though. The article was called “Runaway General”
Oh yes please do all quiet on western front, super good movie.
I love how Shawn just stares at dude with such disbelief of what he is saying
All quiet on the western front…. UFF…Now that is a tough one guys.
Please do more Band of Brothers or…… The Pacific….
And big greetings out from Thailand
I was there when the general took over and it was a soup sandwich. Even some of the fire bases and Fobs he shut down lead to so many more fire fights on hwy 1 in Afghanistan. The bases he shut down kept most of the bad guys on the other side of the mountains.
Need to do a breakdown on HEAT by Michael Mann. One of my favourite films.
All quiet on the Western front is excellent.
Yes watch All Quiet
@FNGACADEMY. Fear and Loathing was written by Hunter S. Thompson
Hey Buck, what should your nutrition be like when training for special forces?
All quiet on the western front is amazing
@FNG Academy...... I know this is spam, but some swag would be nice 😅😅😅
yes, all quiet on the western front
don't care about your politics, care about your soul and where you are when i need ya! enjoy you guys!
@6:44 "Why would you pick a general to make a movie out of?"
There is actually one war movie which I think communicates the "General Officer experience" really well: Gettysburg.
Agreed. One of the finest historical films made outside Waterloo, Japan’s Longest Day, 1917, Das Boot, Conspiracy, and Downfall …
Do all quiet on the western front
Sean, great work as always. It would be great for you guys to break down Netflix's All Quiet On The Western Front as others in this comment section have mentioned.
22:10 Yessir, and they also know how to work us for as much as they can get from us.
0:25 Abel, my man, why would you think he cares..? Lolol
Patton is a fantastic movie about a general
Yeah I love Patton.
But I'm just a history buff not a veteran.
But don't most generals start off as infantryman?
Say what you want about them we need generals
Thank you for your hard work and time. A film called Danger Close you might be interested in.
Definitely do 'All Quiet on the Western Front'!
Love you guys keep it up
You guys need to watch “all quiet on the western front”. It would be cool to see new age military guys react to it.
I would love to see a beers and breakdowns on all quiet on the western front, but fair warning, it’s extremely graphic and intense
I'd push back on going to war for a nefarious reason. Innocent people died. Your friends didn't come home to their families. Family's on both sides were destroyed. Not to mention the endless enemy's we created for generations to come.
Hunter S Thompson was the author. Great movie to break down Gentlemen!
Hope the nose feels better soon dude, great vid as always!
If you're going to watch "All quiet on the Western front" I'd suggest the 1979 one, not the 2022 one.
The 2022 one cuts a lot of the deeper themes and messages in favour of simplified story and showy visuals.
PLEASEEEE review all quiet on the western front! But you have to watch it in German with subtitles. I don't speak German but still lol. It was great.
What do you think about Mattis though? Asking for some crayon eaters.
I just realized FNG stands for F*cking New Guy academy.
Yes to “All quiet on the Western Front”
