Good review guys. Don’t know if you’ve seen it, but there’s an old movie with Gregory Peck called Twelve O’clock High that, I believe, is still shown to cadets at the Air Force Academy to this day for leadership instruction. It’s about the WW2 Army Air Corps side of things. These guys had it bad, worse than I would’ve thought. These guys were assigned a fixed number of missions they had to complete before being eligible to return home. The chance of surviving all of them was slim. Check it out when you get a chance..great movie.

Catch 22(Book and Film) make a heavy mention of the Missions "flown and needed to be flown" aspect of Piloting being gnarly as hell and rough on people too.
There is a strange perception that Air Force people had it easy in comparison.

WWII Bomber crews actually did have exit strategies- "bail out procedures" and WERE issued parachutes, the problem is that parachutes are bulky to wear, and it wasn't practical to wear in the tight small spaces. Imagine trying to wear your rucksack inside a tank. So many kept them under their seats and prayed they'd be able to still be alive and put it on and follow the bail-out-procedures.

I read about a group of german soldiers who were made prisioners when Stalingrad front surrended and they were separeted in 10 men groups. Each group got a cabbage to eat every day, so, if a man died in the group they got less cabbage. So a german doctor came up with the idea of making the dead stand in formation every day to be counted as living so they could still get a whole cabbage per group. It was freezing cold in siberia so they kept the bodies in pretty good shape and they hold them during formatios. Russians werent very thorough counting, they just wanted to get in to their own cabbins and go to drink vodka. Greetings from Argentina.

There is definitely a difference in landing style when your flying on a plane that’s flown by naval aviators as opposed to air force pilots. Air Force definitely seems to float the plane down where as naval aviators put the plane down on the ground hard and fast and keep it down. Difference between runway training and carrier training for sure

But the coward prison guard, 'The Bird", Mutsuhiro Watanabe was a cowardly little puke, not worthy of the human condition. Many Japanese soldiers like the bird actually enjoyed seeing people suffer till they died( sadists). There should have been more war crimes trials for these poor excuses for humans from Japan WWII.
