There are a few things you can check with this! First, rethread the machine top and bobbin, and make sure your presser foot is in the upright position. If you're still getting that message, another trick is to take a plain piece of cotton, fold it in half, and floss the folded edge through the threading path. You may have some lint that got caught on a sensor, so this may help as well.

If you use a basting stitch, you certainly can! There is a gathering foot available for the machine as well.
