A little while back, I made a video about the Automations side of the Shortcuts app on the iPhone, where I said I thought it was the iPhone’s best kept secret. Well, in this video, I’m bringing you 6 more, including 2 that make use of inexpensive NFC tags that you can pick up for literally a few cents each, to help you create game-changing automations around your home. If the idea of being able to simply tap your iPhone against something in your house and have it add an item to your shopping list sounds interesting to you, keep watching until the end of the video.

Can you recommend some good NFC tags? I’ve bought some before, but they had terrible range and so they were tricky to actually connect to.
I had the press my iPhone 13 right up against it in a very specific spot. It was very fiddly.
I tried to create your automation with Pia and starting an app. The automation runs fine but Pia doesn't connect. Not sure why
NFC to create reminder is a neat trick, and CarPlay automation is also cool. More NFC automation ideas would be welcome.
I have an NFC tag on my guitar to automatically open up my tuning app. I have one under my desk that I tap when I want it to turn my phone into do not disturb mode and start playing my focus music on Spotify. I have another one in my car under the steering wheel that I tap to bring up the Exxon Mobil app to pay for gas (that one I actually forget about and it’s probably faster to just ask Siri to open the app then it is to tap)
Yes, but I think using QR codes to take people to a website is better. I have a printed QR code with my guest Wi-Fi password in a QR code in my guest bedroom. I don’t think most people would know to tap an NFC chip.
Same diagnosis here and shortcuts combined with voice recognition is a HUGE add to our quality of life and independence. This video helped me upgraded my previous alarm automation that speaks the weather , emphasizing precipitation & clouds as it effects my vision, my calendar events and a reminder to have a great day. Best of luck!
I really enjoyed this, I would like another video with more examples with NFC tags
Excellent video. More tutorials on using NFC tags would be very useful and appreciated. Many thanks!
Apple AirTags also contain a built in NFC. By default, I think they show the owner's contact info (if you provide it at setup).
But they can also be used to trigger automations. So if I name an AirTag "My keys", I can set an automation on my phone to run an action every time it detects "My keys". I set up a simple automation to give me directions home with one tap. The good thing is that if someone else were to scan it, they would only get the default because the automation is specific to my phone.
Just saying that if you want to try out NFC automations, and you already have an AirTag you can try it out on that.
i just used this tip to set up an automation to 1. start an outdoor cycling workout 2. play my fav playlist 3. open pokemon go when I scan my bicycle airtag 😂😂
Great info.
As someone with macula degeneration and therefore poor eyesight, the use of NFC dots could be very useful for me around the house. I have not used automations or reminders to any great degree so time all of these together, could be very handy for me and people like me.
Many thanks.
YES! I would like to see more automations and I particularly like the NFC tags. Thank you.
Wow Tom everyday's a school day for me. I love your channel, I've never heard of a NFC tag until today so yes please more info when you're ready thank you. I so pleased I'm able to support your channel in a small financial way and hope that others will too I appreciate your generosity and everything you do for us.
Thank you for this video. The VPN toggle is a game changer for me as I live in China and use a VPN for some apps but not local ones. Works perfectly. Subscribed.
Great video. Thanks!
Lovely tips, thanks ❤
Great video. Looking forward to see another one about other NFC use cases and automation. I just ordered 50 tags too, so I'm ready for your next one.
Great. More please. You explain them so well!
Wow. Thanks for the nfc ideas. Yes, would like to see more ideas
I just say “Siri Snooze” or “Siri Stop” when my alarm is going off. But I would also like to say - loving this series, there are things I didn’t know, and it’s presented very well.

Enjoyed your video. Would like to see more automations.😊
Awesome video ❤
Mate. I can’t tell you how awesome your videos are. Nearly every one has me using my Apple gear in better ways. This one helped me to turn on my Bluetooth when I opened my Garmin Connect app and then turn it off when I close it. Doing away completely with the need to mess with settings. Thank you.
Oh snap. Good looking out
I would love to see videos about uses for NFC tags and how to use NFC Tools.
You have created many useful and helpful videos. Thank you!!!!!
Yes on more automation ideas, wether they use NFC or not! Thank you very much for the ideas! I'm now using the VPN ones, for open wifi connections.
Yes, I'd love to see more ideas for uses of NFC tags!
Yes please more automations with NFC tags
I agree, the NFC automatons are really interesting. I did not pay much attention 3 months ago as I had no need but I got a new insulin pen yesterday and remembered this video. I want to download the payload from the NFC and add it to a line in Excel.
Yes - more on NFC 👍🏻 thanks
Great vid, please make another video about nfc tag possibilities
Very interesting, I’d like to know more about nfc tags, thanks.
Would love more videos on how to use nfc tags
An addition to 7:39: You can also just use your work focus and then trigger an automation based on whether your focus is turned off or on and therefore set the unknown callers silent or not. This is especially useful when your work focus is triggered with your location, at certain times or you just trigger it manually
Yes, please, on the NFC tags
Yes please explain more uses for nfc tags
Hello Tom… another excellent video! I would be interested in more tutorials on NFC tags please 😃
Thanks
Thank you very much!
Yes, I’d like to see more info regarding NFC tags 👍
I used NFC tags back in my Android days - would be interested in more ideas on using them w/ automations and shortcuts. Thanks!
Nice video :-) Would love to see more on automations and e.g. smart home. At this moment I'm looking for the ability to switch between SIM card and eSIM at certain hours of the day.
Really like the NFC tags for pdfs. Used to use QR codes in an old building to provide key historical information on an indoor orienteering route. But I do like the idea of setting up a pdf on the cat’s dish for all her routines and instructions in case of emergencies. The reminder add is cool but for me quicker for me to ask Siri on watch or iphone.. However, that would exclude the relevant webiste link, so I can see a benefit in such circumstances. Would really like more on NFC and enjoying reading the comments for others’ use of them. Thank you
How dos you use Zara yo do key histórical¿
Brilliant video - as always! I’m loving the NFC tags and just getting into them. Could you possibly make a video on how smart plugs could be used to turn ON/OFF lights etc by tapping an NFC tag? Thank you!
Tom, thank you for an _excellent_ video - *again.* Like many others, I'd be really interested in a video solely devoted to the NFC tags.
Particularly thinking of my elderly Dad who is partially sighted _and_ has ADHD, so anything that automates things will also help him stay living independently for as long as possible. Wondering if NFCs can also integrate with Alexa to cue audio prompts?🗣
One tip I think could help with one aspect, get some small nfc dots that you can color and put them on the tops of his medicine bottles. (I’ve never done it, but I know it can be done.) Setup an automation to write in his notes app which pill it was and the time, or send you a text for top he scanned. It will take time to get used to the process, but it’s similar to how hospitals do it.
18:26 great series. Very clear.
Please do more iphone shortcuts stuff
I would love to see a video on more uses for NFC tags.
This is gret information. I would love more ideas to use for NFC tags. I purchased a pack on Amazon and have only used a few. I would love ideas on what else I could use them for!
Do make another nfc tag video, very interesting this one
The alarm automation doesn’t allow any voice control settings in iOS 17 :)
Mine either! :(
@properhonesttech Excellent video, as always! Can't wait to grab some NFC tags and enable these automations. Yes, yes, yes, please make a follow-up video! XXOO
Brilliant Video, please can you do a load more on creating shortcuts & NFC tags please? 🙂👍
Ordering NFC tags now! More of these shortcuts please…
Yes please!
I live in China so most of times I use vpn to access apps. The automations method for apps to auto run vpn is game changer for me, THANK YOU SO MUCH❤. btw I tried and we can add multiple apps in a single automations.
Yes
Plz do more video on nfc tricks
It would be interesting for office applications of this technoloy.
Please do another video on NFC tags. TIA😊
NFC tags - what a time to be alive :-)
great! yep, more NFC tags tips would be useful I think... Thank you!!!!! ;-)
Proper cool automations, there is sadly no VPN option in de iOS shortcuts app for iPadOS...
That's strange, I have the option on my iPad, running through the same steps as shown in the video. I'm running 16.5.1
Another brilliantly helpful video. NFCs in my holiday rentals will be really cool. Suppose they could link to RUclips ‘how to’ videos? So yes, more of these automations especially NFC related, please.
I would use QR codes instead. I think most people are a bit more familiar with them.
Great video 👍🏻 one question: is it somehow possible to share existing automations with other devices? (E.g. once I‘ve created an automation on the iPhone I‘d like to send it over to the iPad)
Are there things you can do with an NFC chip that you can’t do with a QR code? Both of those automation examples can be done with QR codes. And QR codes have several advantages:
1. It’s obvious that you’re supposed to scan them, whereas a guest may not recognize an NFC chip so you still need a sign for it.
2. You can print QR codes out yourself rather than needing to buy NFC chips online.
3. If you laminate a QR code or put clear packing tape over it to make it weatherproof, I’d argue it’s more durable than an NFC chip because the integrated circuits in NFC chips will eventually degrade. I think many chips have a lifespan of 10 years.
4. In terms of storage, NFC chips usually store 96 to 512 bytes but QR codes can store up to 3kb.
I suppose an NFC chip might be a little faster or more reliable to scan, but I actually haven’t used them so I’m not sure. And their appearance is more discrete and elegant so they can be good for personal use around the home. But I’m curious to know if there are any unique practical uses for them because they sound interesting to try. I am open to suggestions.
One unique use case I can think of for NFC chips (that’s more for fun) is to put several of them behind a piece of paper or other thin opaque material so they are hidden, and use them as part of an interactive art piece. I can also see them being useful for autonomous robots, but that goes beyond the scope of using a smartphone.
This was informative. Interested in a dedicated NFC video.
Can you use NFC tags with Apple Watch? Are there any security risks with NFC tags? Which one should we buy?
Examples are helpful thanks again
Good video as always, thanks. I should point out that currently in the iOS 17 beta the option to “don’t ask” is no longer available. There now exists a drop down under the Automation label to either “Don’t run” or “Run after confirmation”. Which I find disappointing.
Another addition to the ever-expanding ‘Bizarre and Annoying Apple Decisions’ list.
Ya know that could be because it’s a beta test and not the production version?
Thanks for the great tips! I couldn’t find the “Ask Before Running” section though. Any advice?
Please create more videos. I’m sure cuts was released. I was all about it, but my creativity waned. Then Apple added features, but I wasn’t paying attention. Please make this a series I’m pretty certain at one point I will find something extremely useful.
thank you
is the best way to turn off the TV (itself) using is
Automations > Sleep [room name] ?
I have an NFC tag on my guitar to automatically open up my tuning app. I have one under my desk that I tap when I want it to turn my phone into do not disturb mode and start playing my focus music on Spotify. I have another one in my car under the steering wheel that I tap to bring up the Exxon Mobil app to pay for gas (that one I actually forget about and it’s probably faster to just ask Siri to open the app then it is to tap)
I’m pretty sure I know the answer, but is there any way to use Apple Watch to scan an NFC tag and trigger an automation? This would be great
I was having so much trouble with PIA. I'm sure part of it is not knowing what configurations might be better under certain circumstances. But I log in to the school (work) wifi, and while it's not "open" it is a whole lot of strangers on the same wifi. But I couldn't get it to connect and their chat help was like "Yeah it do be like that sometimes" and I was like but this is exactly when I need it, and they really didn't have an answer. It might need much more research and learning and tweaking and I just don't feel like tackling that.
Anyway the automation seems perfect for me. I forget all the time that I've turned it off because Etsy (for instance) doesn't allow VPN. And I turn it off and then forget that I did and continue to go to other sites where I would like my VPN on again. So that would be helpful. Now I'd just need it for a laptop, too!
Great info in this vid. Will nfc work on iPhone lock screen?
Can I suggest a video idea? Purpose: Tracking how much time spent at a particular location. So a video to show step-by-step how to get your phone create a calendar entry when the user enters a location with title "you entered location-A at this time"; and when leaves the location a calendar entry titled "you left the location-A at this time". I tried myself using the Shortcuts app but was stuck in the process and gave up. I'm sure you can make it happen! Thanks and keep up the good work. Cheers
Agreed. Even following not her channel on how to set up a daily weather read out; the shortcut app is so convoluted that I just gave up on getting it to work like the guy in the video.
So, I don’t even try to do my own anymore.
This can be done using either the built-in location automation in shortcuts ("Arrive" and "Leave"), which must be triggered manually or you could use a Focus, which you set to be turned on at a certain location, which can be run completely automated, but can be unreliable when exiting the focus mode, while still at that location.
Step-by-step for the location automation:
1. Create personal automation
2. Select "Arrive"
3. Click on "Location" and select your desired location
4. Click "Next" on the upper right
5. Tap the search and type "location"
6. Select and add "Get Current Location"
7. Tap the search and type "new event"
8. Select and add "Add New Event" from calendar
9. Click on "Title" and type "You entered location - " and select the variable "Current Location"
10. Click on "Tomorrow at midday" and select variable "Current Date"
11. Click on "Tomorrow at 1pm" and select variable "Current Date"
12. Click on the arrow of the calendar event
13. Toggle off "Show Compose Sheet"
13.a. Additionally you can add the "Current Location" to the "Location" field
14. Click "Next" on the upper right
15. Click "Done"
Now to create a new calendar event when leaving your location:
1. Create new personal automation
2. Select "Leave"
3. Click on "Location" and select location set at arrive automation
4. Click "Next" on the upper right
5. Tap search and type "location"
6. Select and add "Get Current Location"
7. Tap the search and type "new event"
8. Select and add "Add New Event" from calendar
9. Click on "Title" and type "You exited location - " and select the variable "Current Location"
10. Click on "Tomorrow at midday" and select variable "Current Date"
11. Click on "Tomorrow at 1pm" and select variable "Current Date"
12. Click on the arrow of the calendar event
13. Toggle off "Show Compose Sheet"
13.a. Additionally you can add the "Current Location" to the "Location" field
14. Click "Next" on the upper right
15. Click "Done"
To make the Focus automation work, you first need a Focus, which you automatically turn on at your desired location. Afterwards you can enter the Shortcuts app:
1. Create a new personal automation
2. Select the Focus you want to be automated
3. Click "Next" on the upper right
4. Proceed with the same steps as the location automation starting from step 5
14.a. Uncheck "Ask before running"
Now when exiting the location:
1. Create new personal automation
2. Select the Focus you want to automate
3. Deselect "When Turning On", Select "When Turning Off"
4. Click "Next" on the upper right
5. Proceed with the same steps from the exiting location automation starting from step 5
14.a. Uncheck "Ask before running"
You could also just edit your calendar entry end set the "End Date" to the "Current Date" when exiting the location, but this is a bit harder to explain
@@Rood67How should your weather read out work?
re The NFC trick you can also use a credit/debit card to run an automation too. I use an old Halifax debit card to run a "Sleep" routine art bedtime.
Focus mode is not that complicated for the calls piece. Create a contact list with specific people to answer calls from, select the same people in the focus mode or just disallow phone notifications but with that contact list as allowed.
Do try to add more NFC automation.
