A good way to get rid of the glue/enheasive is spraying WD-40 on it. Spray it on leave it for 10 minutes and wipe it off. Easy as that
It’s very satisfying to see old game boys revived
I'm glad I watched your video. Some webpage said *not* to apply direct heat to the cable to fix the vertical lines, and I wasn't having any luck. Saw your vid and how you applied heat, did the same thing, got my DMG fixed! Not sure what temp my iron was at. Was just a battery powered 4.5W iron, but it got the job done.
thanks for making this video, you inspired me to try and fix my childhood gameboy that hasn't turned on in 20 years!! I got it working :)
best repair I ever seen
best channel of retro stuff!
Weldone on bringing the old girl back to life. Also a well made & informative guide on how it was done for anyone that fancies a crack at one themselves.

Thanks for watching!
Girl? Its literally called a gameboy lmao
J4U is hands down the best seller on eBay, whenever you are looking for not working consoles or import cartridges.
I'm kinda addicted.
I know right? I got my first gameboy from them and It took me like half an hour to repair and it was working as good as new. I've taken it to school and back hundreds of times and it still works flawlessly. All their stuff is reasonably priced, packed well, and shipped in a reasonable amount of time. Can't recommend them enough
Bought from them multiple times, got all the japanese pokemon games from them. having fun
@@substadoot9120 you don't need like in your fucking sentence stupid habit right
@@substadoot9120 unless, of course, you order from them during a pandemic. I ordered a DS back in March. It won't arrive until a month and six days from now. Hopefully, my purchase was worth it, and the problem is easy to fix!
Can I have a link to his eBay seller site
Good one, love these vids...OLD RED even got a bit of airtime!!
Award, Winner!!
Haha yes, it has a permanent spot on display. I still need to get around to replacing the rear polarisation film, though.
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you! You help me to fix my gameboy!
Interesting video, would like to see more of these in the future as well.

Cheers. I'm always on the lookout for broken stuff to repair for my collection and future videos, but you haven't already check out the playlist this video is for similar videos :)
Hello, nice video. Just one question, what you had done with the rubber you remove bellow the screen to fix the vertical lines?
You put it back in place again?
Your doing God’s work.
Hey there, just a little tip for the next time you want to repair a DMG game boy, you removed the rubber stripe that was over the screen connectors, but it also work by applying heat gently with a solder without applying so much preasure on It will reconnect the screen without having the risk of damaging the connectors!
m alv Yes power
what if you stripped the screws while opening them?
Hey!! any suggestions for a flickering display. I hear the sound but the display is flickering and few horizontal lines.
I've just come across a DMG-01 on which that bottom ribbon cable had completely detached.. any tips for soldering it back on?
How about screen burns?
What if my lines are horizontal?
I have a Nintendo game boy and the light comes on when I turn it on but the screen is blank and the only way I can get it to start is if (whilst turned on) I switch two of the battery's over, does anyone know why it is do this? I have used band new batteries? thanks
Is 70% isopropyl good the motherboard?
Would you be willing to fix my Gameboy DMG if i sent it to you and paid for any fixes needed? Right now I can see that the battery contacts are very messed up. They're corroded but also, one of the springs is pulled straight for some reason. I rescued it from a thrift store that I worked at because someone was going to throw it away. Also, for some reason the frame around the screen is missing. I don't know why someone would pull that off. Maybe the screen wasn't working and they thought that would help. Who knows.
Can you fix mine bro I have 2 I’m from Sydney
I cleaned the battery terminals on my gameboy with comet and oven cleaner
10% solution of floor cleaner, 10% isopropanol and 20% window cleaner.. Rest water, try that mix to clean old plastics. Need a bit of polishing liquid afterwards
What do you call green table at your work station
It's just called a work mat, usually made of PVC. Here's mine: www.jaycar.com.au/benchtop-work-mat-450-x-300mm/p/HM8100
This is kinda related to the video, so I'm going to ask a question.
I found this old gameboy printer at the flea market for 5 USD. While the inside is fine, some of the contacts are severely corroded to the point they're chipping off and the batteries just slide out of them. Luckily, none of the contacts that are soldered to the printer are corroded, could I just replace the old corroded contacts with new ordinary ones from ebay? Would it still work? And do you have repair services?
Also another question, I have a DMG that seems to have superglue on the LCD screen from the previous owner supergluing the cover on (idiot) how would I go about removing it? Also, one of the contacts seems to be messed up and it needs to be a certain way in order to turn on. Can I do the same with replacing the contacts on the DMG?
Yes, ordinary contacts should work. As far as I know, Game Boys don't use anything special. I've repaired a camera in a similar way; the battery contacts had gone AWOL so I actually just cut up some old RF shielding and used that. A bit ghetto, but it worked haha. And no, sorry, I don't run a repair service.
Yeah, as before the contacts shouldn't be an issue to replace. As for removing super glue off plastics, that's a tough one. I've never had to do it myself, but a little Googling around reveals there are a few potential methods. Have a look and see what works for you.
@@retrogameon thanks for the reply man, I'll see what I can do
Do you know anyone who will repair a original Gameboy I want to get my mom's original Gameboy fix and so it can continue to get passed down in the family
do you happen to have a burnt lcd repair for gameboy dmg? plan to restore mine and it will really be of great help... thanks in advance
Not for the DMG but I have done that for the Pocket, which should be similar. You'll find it in the same playlist as this video.
Retro Game On thank you, im just not confident with the lcd of dmg compared to the gb pocket...
thank you so much...
These screws are really stiff and not moving is there anything I can do?
Use a bigger screwdriver
Retro Game On I used the exact same screwdrivers you used in the video, would I need to get a bigger tri wing screwdriver?
@@DonGordo1 it's all in the wrists ;)

Hey dude. I have an original game boy as well. The gameboy turns on (red led) but nothing happens (audio/video). I've tried the screen on another gameboy and it works. Any ideias?
