The Retro Future hey Elliot, I know that vertical lines are a common problem with DMGs, but they're not too bad to fix - do you have any ideas how to fix horizontal lines on the screen though?
When your gray dmg is so yellow it looks like a yellow play it loud lol. Great video dude!

Is it possible to buy a new screen for an old gameboy? Surely someone has invented one that eliminates that blurryness?
Hi Larry! Didn't expect to see you here, welcome to the channel. I believe someone invented a new screen for it. I think he's called BennVenn, it's like a 3" screen (so you have to cut the shell up) and it comes stock backlit. They are very expensive from memory and from what I heard, there is still ghosting!
Ghosting is impossible to fix by keeping the original display, since it results from the screen''s ancient technology. However, if you go for BennVenn's solution as suggested by the OP, you will solve the issue and also have a nice backlit DMG as a bonus!

i have been wondering, what do you do with all the gameboys than you have (the doubles ones) and yes get a Ac adapter, they make me realize all the Dmg and Pocket i bought for parts and repair they actually all work they just need a proper cleaning on the battery compartment

Hey today I for my first time took apart and fixed my own faulty Gameboy and used your video as a tutorial thanks the retro future ! Plus I am so chuffed about soldering for the first time as I also used a backlights and invert module

I've never seen that kind of sticker on a regular Game Boy. The two I have with stickers both have large white barcode stickers. One has a red and white sticker on the battery cover, but I can't seem to find that one on ebay. I guess it's probably either older or newer, as it's got phillips head screws as well.
Phillips head screws means its older i believe, and the barcode means its a USA version? Don't quote me on that, but it would make sense if you can't find any on ebay.

That's the USA version infact I have one with the Phillips head screws how ever the front case is broken.... :(

I fixed mine's screen about 6 months ago and it's still working nice. It's impressive how heat-resistant those ribbon cables are. I was afraid I was going to melt mine, but it survived like a champ! :)

It's Kapton film, it is very heat resistant, that's why this repair is possible. However you should always be cautious, as too much heat will eventually melt it!
Just want to share my experience. Tried to fix 3x gameboys with screen burn/degradation. While it is possible to replace the reflector and install the backlight as a replacement, a big chance of that will cause horizontal lines to appear. I think from my experience is that the unit is badly degraded to a point that the wires connecting the lcd is also degraded.
Well done for giving it a go though.

i bought a N64 today and it came with a free DMG Gameboy extra, its in almostz perfect condiion but the screen had some dead lines on it, i used the soldering iron technic and it worked! just finished cleaning it, looks inrcredible

very useful video, i didn't know the bit about the rubber in the contacts! and i find that using solder in the ribbon cable can actually be very useful for stubborn lines that require a constant and even heating

Bee Queen - glad you like it buddy, I'll be selling off some of the bits I make the videos off, to re invest into more videos.
I have two of those. One is working absolutely fine and looking quite good. The other works nicely as well, but the ‘dark grey’ “glass” cover is off; however it is still in one piece. It’s just that the glue gave way. There is residue on the front shell, where the cover used to be. Does anyone have a tip as to how to clean this residue off and get the frontage back in place? I have now used 3M Magic Tape, which is a kind of non-distructive sellotape, to temporarily set it back against the shell as so as to not loose it or damage it, but I’d much rather it’d be glued in place again. All of the buttons, connectors and the cartridge are in nice working order, as is the speaker, so there’s no real need to disassemble it, and therefore I’d rather not do that to begin with. Any help is appreciated.

Have you ever run across a speaker issue with one of these? I just picked up my first an I'm getting no sound. The outer screen has detached suggestions for remounting?
My dad’s GameBoy had the same problem with the screen in the 1990’s He Eventually gave up on the GameBoy. Now I know how to fix it and how easy it would be if he still had it.
I want to get an original DMG just so I can give it to children so they can be confused.

Do you need a soldering iron for the black lines or can you just use a hot material?
a lighter will probably melt the film, and a heater gun will most likely overheat and cause cracks in the lcd, resulting in dark patches. Personally, every time i performed this repair i used a 30-40 watt soldering iron
I was hoping that you did that yellowed one first and that you tryed to bleaching it back to be white agsin, but nope.

The Retro Future You should try using retr0bright on it dude, hairdressing hydrogen peroxide of about 10% does the trick!
Is repairing cheap broken EBay Gameboys an easy hobby to get into for someone with limited experience dealing with electronics?
If you would like to get into some electronic repair work, a gameboy is a great place to start. Try pick up a dmg where the screen works so you know you wont have many issues, and maybe just take it apart, clean it and put it back together. Then get a faulty one and do the same, try work out what the issue is, then look on youtube on how to fix it. Its good fun and Gameboys are simple.
i refurbished a game boy advance sp it was the most scratched thing ever but i just replaced the case and stuff like that and now ive ordered a ps1 and im gonna refurb that
My original Gameboy won't turn on anymore but it's in good condition. I left it in a tupperware container for storage to prevent it from dust and from being out in the open. Any ideas?
Maybe the power on button is broken, try moving your power button around to see if it turns on,
Or it could be something wrong with the battery connectors.

Is it better to keep old serial number sticker or model stickers or is it okay to buy new stickers?
It depends what you feel I guess. If you are trying to keep it original then keep the one that came on it. If you're just looking to re-sell it, then getting a replacement might be a good idea.

I gotta agree. The music causes me headaches ALL THE TIME. Not exaggerating either. I always have to mute it and rely on the captions to let me know when he's talking again. It's way too 'pulsating'
