  • Hey guys! This was such a fun video to film. LITERALLY my first time ever using a Sizzix and I was NOT disappointed. The only thing I did not leave in the video was me using an exacto knife to get out the small leather chunks that got lodged in between the blades and the foam between each cut. So just be aware of that if you are cutting thick leather and using these dies, you have to clean them out in between each cut to get perfect crisp cuts every time.

They turned out great and its normal for the cutting plates to get marked, they also warp overtime, so turn them over and cut from both sides to even out the cutting pressure.

I'm sure 2 years later by now you've got the full hang of the die cutting/embossing machine. When you first et up the platform as part of the sandwich I started to say NOOOOO. But of course you were in the learn as you go stage. And by now you as well as most of us know steel rule dies don't use the platform as they are thick. Now for those who may not know there are a number of different cutting plates. I've been watching people use metal die cutting plates not flimsy ones but Sizzix makes a super sturdy not a shim die cutting plate. Though it works great for cutting steel rule dies I do worry it also might dull the cutting edge quicker too. But I do use it for a lot of projects and it saves my plates. My favorite save cutting plates however is the miracle cutting sheet/plate. It's a bit thinner I believe 3mm maybe only 2mm thick cutting like mat. Similar to your cutting mats used for years in sewing they are sold for working with craft knife work too. Anyway I've found cheap mats on line and at stores that also are only 3mm thick or thinner than the more expensive versions. And they work too. You can heat them up with hot tap water and or heat gun or hot summer sun and these mats return to flat and are used a long time. I'm using a new one to cut into with my steel rule dies and saving it just for them. I also flip my cutting plate a lot and don't cut into that plate. The key a lot of us learn over time is to use one plate always to cut into and one as your top or non cut plate on any sandwich for any machine to save plates. Once you have a well worn and even warpped plate it's time to put the old top plate into cutting position that you do flip each time you run it through and a new plate becomes the top plate. But if you use the miracle or similar cutting mat as the cut into mat you can save lots on buying new plates. As Jennifer McGuire said on one of her videos I happened upon she's been using them and one for well over a year not having to buy a new plate. So I'm a huge fan of DIY and if you can find a thin enough cutting mat at the dollar store etc. If it's too big maybe you have the means to cut it down to fit plate size. I've done that and done it with the more expensive miracle mats too. I once needed a smaller mat for a smaller machine and only had a new large one for my Platinum 8.5" machine. I did I cut it down. Normally I wouldn't want to but now and again you can talk yourself into that and turned out just fine. I ended up with a slightly larger piece but fit my smaller Platinum too perfectly and I cut that in two and had two lovely mats for the smaller machine while I still used the itty piece I was after for a Tim Holtz mini machine I was taking on a trip with me. Had a huge project to get through and the dies were small so I wanted to enjoy using the mini but take advantage of the miracle mat too. Worked out perfectly. I love how your video progressed. We all got to learn as you learned too. Thank you and so appreciate all of you who make these videos.

I want to get one of these machines and I have been researching them and I came across you trying it. Your video is the best so far with you experimenting with it using leather.

I use to own a cricut cuttlebug, it's similar to the big shot. It's normal for it to leave marks on the clear plates.

I used a ''silver'' marking pen from fabric department at W/mart -- outline the blades on your dies - this will help lining up the fabric - and use a dental pick for getting down in between the blades and rubber matting to pull out loose threads - you can also have custom dies made through - Custom Shape Pros - however wait for their discount codes - as they are pricey

Kayla yes it is normal to mar the clear plates. You did it correctly. I love how they came out.
