Children don't understand that those public tongs are packed full of bacteria, so right after grabbing more food, they eat with their infected hands and spread bacteria everywhere they touch. People don't want to be bothered with common sense precautions while they're on vacation, so they do whatever their selfish natural habits dictate. They're in the mindset of "I'm on vacation, I just want to let everything go, and not worry about a thing." Then the next day they're in their stateroom barfing uncontrollably from a Noro outbreak. The worst part about that is they won't admit it's all due to *their own negligence.*

I was just on a cruise and a Family thought that leaving a half a glass of orange juice on the table held the table for them. When another couple came to the table they sat down thinking that those people had left and started eating. When the family came back they were giving the couple a hard time for taking the table. To be honest I really didn’t feel bad for the family that left orange juice on the table, that’s not the way you hold the table, you have to leave a human being behind to hold the table, not juice!

I love ating in the Windjammer. My tip for going there is to get a couple of those wrapped eating utensils, along with a glass of water, tea, or other drink and find a table, as you said, before getting food. I also second browsing the food stations before selecting what you want to eat.
One thing that peeves me in the windjammer is people who chose to make a salad for lunch. dinner and spend five minutes picking through the salad bowl to get that perfect (to them) piece of lettuce or carrot, etc for their salad, meanwhile holding up the line.

We always go pick a table and one person stays put to anchor it while the others go get their food. When the 1st comes back, they relieve the 1st so that the original table holder can go grab food. Bonus tip - take drink orders for everyone at the table so if a server comes over, you can ask for the drinks to be brought over vs. everyone trying to juggle food and drinks getting to the table.

Here's another good tip I learned myself. If you plan on getting an omelet, plus things from the actual buffet, get your omelet first. Usually, the omelet is steaming hot and the food in the buffet line is not steaming hot. By the time you get your omelet, then you get your food from the buffet line, the omelet has cooled down nicely for you to eat. If you get your buffet food first and then your omelet, the buffet food has likely cooled down too much.

Thank you for qualifying the "don't break in line" rule. Of course, don't be rude and prioritize yourself over others. But if you can grab (with the tongs of course) a specific item without slowing down others, then please just do it. It will ultimately speed up the whole process for everyone.

I have people cut in line in front of me all the time XD
Bu if I could give 1 advice. I would say this. It's crowded, and that's a given. But please, PLEASE, don't just stop in the middle of a path and just talk to someone or something. Or if you're walking slow, make sure people have enough room to go around you. It just makes the buffet more of a mess of people coming and going.
Same goes with the tables, people are coming and going here and there as well, pull in your chairs or push them in when you are done.

Also only take what you are going to eat. There is a big problem with some people that think that this will be their last meal so they will empty a container of food to bring to their table, then they only eat a piece or two, while the people behind them have to wait for a crew member to cook and bring out more food.

Make sure you recognize crew members at the buffet. One passenger made a bad mistake when she assumed that my wife, dressed in a white blouse and dark slacks, was a crew member. She had an overloaded tray and approached my wife, telling her to take her tray to a table. Being Dutch and rather direct, my wife replied that the other passenger had way too much food on her tray and that she should take it to her table herself. The passenger asked to see my wife's name tag and was rather mortified to be told that she was not a crew member, but a fellow passenger. She scuttled off to her table with her overloaded tray and we descended to the main dining room for dinner.

Agreed on the whole making sure you can tell staff apart from other passengers; which should be pretty easy to do one would think. However, I myself was once mistaken for a cruise ship librarian by another passenger simply for sitting at the table the librarian normally sat in even though I was only wearing a graphic T-shirt and shorts; something no crew member would be allowed to wear during working hours. Now normally I would not have sat there but when I first entered the library all of the other seats were taken. So I'm just sitting there minding my own business enjoying a book I checked out when this lady walked in asking me if I could open up a locked shelf that had a book she wanted. See once the library is closed all of the shelves that have the books are locked. I had gotten my book out before the librarian locked up everything. Anyway, I had to tell the poor lady that I wasn't the librarian, but a fellow passenger, so I had no access to the books. The woman was annoyed. But yeah how could you mistake someone dressed super casually for a crew member? I mean I was pretty engrossed in my book. What employee would be reading during work time anyway?

My wife is handicapped in a scooter. Because cruise lines no any longer have trays , this makes it almost impossible to go through a buffet. We give the crew member a generous tip.

Say like it's a food you like and you think you're going to eat a lot still grab a small amount because sometimes the food you like wasn't prepared how you like it or was just not prepared well

I cut : some people stand in front of the food and stare . They have to pick which piece of chicken is the best. They cause a road block !

Maybe I am old school, but men should not wear hats/caps while they are dining!

Men shouldn’t wear hats/caps indoors. Unless they’re under arms.

At a nice restaurant no hats!

I wish buffets had "social seating" sections or something. Like a small section with tables that seat 4 or more people, but the expectation is that other guests may join your table if there are free seats. you could also put cards on the larger table that guests can display signaling that they are willing to accept random dining partners.
A lot of the time I notice that couples are seating themselves at tables that can accommodate 4 people, meaning that 2 full seats are just being left empty because nobody wants to be rude and intrude.
A simple solution would just be to have MORE 2 person seating options, of course... but I think it would be a great opportunity to allow for some early natural socialization. Especially for first time cruisers or more introverted people who might have trouble approaching people.
Many of my best cruise friendships started in the main dining room at our table, and I think the ultra-casual atmosphere of the windjammer would be a great place for the same kind of blind socialization.
Of course families and groups can still take all 4 seats. it's not reserved or anything. But it would just be a more efficient use of seating

    WASH YOUR HANDS.
NEVER touch the food with your hands.
Use hand sanitizer before you unwrap your utensils- those tongs have been handled by everyone on the ship.
If you are going to sneeze or cough- TURN your head.
    Seems easy, doesn't it?

Respectfully, I totally disagree with your first recommendation. Especially at busy times holding a table before getting food makes that table unavailable to people with food looking for a table. In some, or many, cases by the time one gets their food, another party could have sat and eaten.
I’ve run into this issue more at Disney Parks than on my two cruises (on NCL and Disney, not Royal Caribbean). I find it very rude to hold a table in a busy area when not eating.

Interesting take, I can appreciate having a catch up session without eating is rude to hold the table.
Just off my first cruise and in the morning we’d find a table first as was always busy for breakfast and then my wife will go get something and then I’d go when she’s back or place my bag/drink bottle at the table to show it’s occupied.

Along with the required Muster drill should be a required discussion of buffet etiquette and healthy ways of taking food to eat. See my comment below.

my big complaint is people standing at the stations go comatose trying to decide which type of bread to pick - you have 4 options pick one and move on....another are the lane blockers - they just loaded up two plates and take one step and just stand there with their plate held out and one can get by

Don't take an accessible table if you don't need it.
Dish yourself "taster" size if you aren't sure if you like it.

Noticed in the video no staff supervising the hand wash station! Washy-washy (NCL) ladies have hand sprays for those who don't.

So, I was on WOS this past January . I had finished eating and was waiting in the chairs near the hand washing stations. The Washy Washy ladybugs singing and reminding people to wash their hands before eating. This lady walked in, whispered to her husband that she wasn't washing her ands because she did that before she left her room😳😐 Then, the same day, when I walked into rhe Windjammer, I saw one of the people in my group walking around the buffet, so I asked her where they were sitting. And as she's telling me, this little boy is behind her and he sneezed into his hand, then proceeded to pick up the tongs with that same hand.😖 I just make it a habit to ALWAYS keep hand sanitizer on me and in my car and after touching anything, to sanitize my hands because people don't care.

It's not everyone's job to keep you healthy. It's your job. The world has germs. People get sick. If you want to try and avoid germs, wash your hands or sanitize before you eat your food. Remember how we all lived before people like you lost their minds during covid?
