My best tip… if you book an inside cabin you can leave your tv on the channel that has a bridge camera. It will be totally dark at night and provide some light in the morning just like having a window.

Unfortunately, this tip doesn't work on all ships; on Holland America, for instance, at night instead of the screen going dark, everything turns green with their low-light camera...and eventually the TV will shut off if you leave it on for hours! I've found a better solution is a daylight alarm app on my phone or iPad, which gives a gradually increasing amount of light starting a half hour before the alarm goes off.

One of my tips, if you do not buy a drink package, is to pack a variety of flavored drink mix envelopes/tubes that you can add to your re-useable water bottle/s because only water, iced and hot tea, lemonade and hot coffee are complimentary on most cruise lines.

I'm not OCD by a longshot... but bringing Lysol wipes and doing a thorough clean of all the high-touch things is a very good idea. Yes, the rooms are cleaned before you arrive - but the do not have time to disinfect everything. So it's a good habit to do it right away. Not fun, but it might save you from getting sick. You never know who was in your room and if they had a bug. Five minutes could save you a LOT of grief.

When we get on the ship I always get 2 beach towels to take back to our room to cover the couch. My next suggestion is to bring a small rechargeable fan, especially if you get an inside room. Sanitize all touchable surfaces before unpacking and wash your hands as soon as you get back to your cabin after being out and about the ship. Lastly, I always like to meet the cabin attendant as soon as possible to make any special request like an ice bucket and I will give them $10 per day tip at the beginning of our cruise. This will go a long ways to show how much you appreciate their hard work.

You & Illana from Life Well Cruised have so much awesome information. Thank you.
I just went on a cruise, first time in almost 10 years. I didn’t use the internet or RUclips for all these tips and tricks back then (not sure if they were around then?).
Anyways, the best tips and tricks I used- the packing cubes (I put laundry dryer sheets in them to keep clothes smelling fresh), put them in closet shelves, put suit case under bed, got magnetic hooks (50-80+ lbs), with the hooks, hung some outside balcony to hang bathing suits, hung them inside (and the magnetic chip clips) for papers, excursions tickets, baseball caps, lanyard/key card, and the mesh shoe holder (I just hung on wall)-it was great for sun tan lotion, sun glasses, medications, hair ties, etc. I think the hooks were a life saver! Also, got the magnetic motion detector night light. That was a life saver too. I hung that on the wall (it slid down but we put some of the magnetic hooks under it and it was good to go). I’d have to say definitely get the magnetic hooks and night light! Oh we also had both European and American plugs. Either way, we had enough outlets for our phones and iPads.
I also got some tiki signs from dollar tree and used magnetic hooks to hang on our cabin door. I got some magnets online Amazon and a personalized sign for our cruise to hang on our door. It definitely helped find our room-easier to find it! I’d have to say a lot of the video has a lot of good hacks. I need to remember not to over pack. That’s what I did and barely wore half the clothes I had. 😂thanks again Matt for all your info on cruising!

I take a empty set of packing cubes like the ones I have packed. I just pack the dirty clothes as I use them into the spare packing cubes. I use two colors so I can remember which are clean and dirty. I just toss them in a drawer I’m not using or I leave my hard side suitcase folded open and slid under the bed. I just reach under and grab a dirty cube toss my stuff in it and toss it in opened suitcase under bed. The great thing about this is last day most all is packed and in suitcase or easy to toss in suitcase. Makes that packing last day super easy. When I get home take them to laundry room and dump them in the washer.

If you like being near the pool, get a cabin a bit higher up, that way you are not running through the whole ship with wet clothes on. If you like being near the promenade, get one mid-ship. Due to the recent Virgin Voyages 'Scarlet Lady' gastrointestinal illness experienced by 3% of the passengers (appx 80, don't know about the crew), I've ordered extra 5-symptom anti-diarrheals, such as the generic Pepto-Bismol chewables.
The generic 5-symptom tabs would work as well, especially since you have to take them with water, which you lose with diarrhea.
The chewables might work faster, but you wouldn't get the water.
Decorating the door has caveats-they must NOT be paper, due to fire requirements. They must be plastic or laminated.
I believe the metal hook over-the-door multi-storage thingy isn't allowed anymore because of scratches on the door. I purchased a one hanger hook multi-storage item to put on the hook over the toilet. (I checked out our room video and saw how someone did it for that bathroom. )

I like the mid section of the ship to be nearer to activities that I like to do. I usually travel solo so I always get a cabin with at least a window. Balconies and junior suites are nice for a bit more space and the balcony is very nice to have. The tips included in this video are mostly ones I use especially the magnetic hooks, extra hangers and bringing my own toiletries especially shampoo and conditioner. As well one garden trash bag to, that you cut it down one side , then across the bottom of the bag, to use it as way to lay your luggage on while unpacking, then those two other garden trash bags , place your luggage inside, like a pillow case, then close them up , with ponytail ties, then stowe them away, with comfort, knowing no buggieboos, don't get inside them. And when the cruise is over do this in reverse, fold the garden trash bags up, putting them into a gallon sized ziplock bag, to use them again as well the ponytail ties that was used , while on board the ship, as well bring sanitizing wipes, to use on the phone and remote control for the tv, wipe down the tv buttons. The cruise ships has their version of clean, but I have my own degree of what is clean, I haven't been sick, or gotten sick, after going on holidays. I intend to keep that way.

My best balcony room was on Voyager, the new rooms on Deck 11 exactly ahead of the Solarium.
I will report on the Deck 4 window room on Serenade, next year after the UWC.
Look carefully at your laptop and phone chargers. Many say they can run from 100 to 240 VAC. I got just a plug adapter in Denmark so I can run that stuff with the small, cheap adapter.

One of the best memories of my last cruise was getting on the wifi at one of our excursions in Mexico, and downloading the latest episode of house of the dragon that came out the day before on my phone via the HBO Max app. Then that night I went on the balcony with a drink and pizza and watched it on my phone while the kids were asleep.
Most apps like Netflix and stuff will allow you to download something and watch it later. It is perfect for the cruise if you get a few things ahead of time. It will certainly be better than what they show on the TV when you relax in your room or get ready.

The European outlets are used by the cabin steward when they vacuum. It's okay to use while you're in the room, but keep in mind it will get unplugged when the room is serviced. There are European outlets all over the ship, so if you need to use a laptop or charge your phone, they can come in handy. MAJOR WARNING: Those outl;ets are 230V at 50 Hz. Many adapters do not step down the voltage and none will do anything about the frequency. Laptops and most phone chargers can operate at that higher voltage, but YOU have to check if your device can work before you use those outlets.

The royal Caribbean phone rep suggested I try the guarantee cabin instead of choosing my own so bad move don't do it I'm stuck on Odyssey of the seas deck 6 cabin 6206 with a lifeboat blocking my ocean view for 8 nights. I specifically said no obscured balcony I was willing to pay more but was talked into the guarantee never again will I do that. My tip get the cabin you want don't listen to a sales rep.

For anti-hangover bring a product called "CHEERS" - they work great when you take them after drinking and before going to bed!
