There's a lot from the book, though some things are obviously left out. I like to say that the movie is a distillation of the book, not better or worse. Just another way that it's similar to The Princess Bride.

Definitely a different DeNiro than you have ever seen before.
      (I haven't read the book.)
Marketing: if you break the film down into commercial or even a full trailer, it looks deeply silly. It works because it takes itstime to tell the story.

NO WAY the way I gasped so loud when I saw this notification!!! This is my favorite movie OF ALL TIME. I played it every year since my childhood. It still holds up and will always bring me comfort whenever I’m in any mood. You guys have seriously no idea how happy this just made me. I was about to request it to you guys, but I’m glad you beat me to it. I just have no words when it comes to explaining my love for this movie. It’s in my top 3. The other two being “The Sound of Music” and “Mamma Mia” but they’re in the number 1 spot and I can’t choose between them because they have a lot of significance for me and my entire family, but if I had to choose just one movie to choose as my ultimate favorite, it would be Stardust. I seriously can’t thank you guys enough for this. It’s purely delightful. Simply perfect. Way better than the book.

  • @EChacon
    @EChacon 2 месяца назад +14

Without a doubt one of the most underrated fantasy film and it’s even more crazy to realize especially rewatching it the 2nd time that not only was the original book by Neil Gaiman (Good Omens, Coraline, the Sandman), but the actor who played Tristan is Matt Murdock/Daredevil himself, Charlie Cox and the director for this movie was the same director who would go on to do _X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass_ and especially _The Kingsman_ films, Matthew Vaughn.
Also I think the film and the book it was based are equally as good, but one noticeable difference is that compared to the original book in which the Sky Pirates appeared and picked up Tristan and Yvaine and later dropped them off a chapter or two later, their roles were expanded in the film in which Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro) befriends them and provides Tristan and Yvaine with new clothes, while also teaching Tristan how to fence and Yvaine how to dance.
Lastly, much like Giancarlo Esposito and Ben Mendelsohn, Michelle Pfeiffer is born to portray villainous characters in every film she’s in, with her role as Lamia being one of her signature ones next to her roles as Catwoman in _Batman Returns_ and Eris in _Sinbad_

Funny you mentioned the trailer maybe not being good enough but it was the trailer that made me go see it. It shows just the right amount and has a great buildup without giving away the substance of the story.
Also I didn't hear anyone talk about the music. This has one of the best fantasy soundtracks of all time.

One of my favourite movies. I loved the song playing in the End credits - 'Rule the World' by British band, Take That.
Narrated by the great Sir Ian McKellen himself.

Stardust is the movie that made me love cinema! I was 10 when it came out and barely watched any movies, but my little mind was BLOWN at all the different plot points. It's also a really good transition between children's and adult movies for kids that age - the plot is similar to fairytales, but it's much more scary and deals with more mature themes (but still in a fairly light manner).

edit: It's so crazy seeing this film after all these years. You have Jigsaw(Punisher villain) as Daredevil's dad, then we see Daredevil fight Superman, who then goes and finds Juliet who's being hunted by Catwoman, and then ferried by Taxi Driver. All the while Magneto narrates

Stardust is a modern fairy tale. It's fantastical and romantic, but it's also weird and often gory, the way fairy tales were before we got the sanitized Disney version.

Aw so glad you guys watched this movie as I haven’t seen a lot of people react to it and so glad you loved it as much as I do. It’s definitely a hidden gem/ diamond in the rough sort of movie and do think and hope over time Stardust will become a fantasy romance cult classic just like Princess Bride is. I remember watching this for the first time when I was 7 the year it came out and instantly fell in love with it and have continued to love it as an adult, it really does have this unique magic to it that makes it feel really different to any other fantasy movie I have seen before and think that’s down to all the weird and wonderful characters and places in the movie as well as the amazing plot that kind of just takes you here there and everywhere. When I was young and even now I just remember wanting to be in the fantasy world of Stormhold going on adventures like Tristan and Yvaine. Hope you consider watching more fantasy romance action adventure movies since you guys loved this one so much! A disney movie i would recommend that has fantasy action adventure, romance and is somewhat historical/ mythological is the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (2010) (with Jake Gyllenhaal as the lead) i always loved the parkour action sequences and storytelling in this movie. And you guys probably will have seen these movies already but The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001) (with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz) were also 2 action adventure fantasy/ mythological/ history movies that i was obsessed with from a young age so would love seeing you guys react to them too! Great reaction as always guys, looking forward to many more!

I have such nostalgia for this film. I was studying film production at uni just after this came out. The VFX director & miniatures builder came to give a great lecture, breaking down various scenes of Stardust & other films they'd done including Casino Royale, National Treasure etc. It was fascinating & just a great thing to look back on.
The film was generally a big hit over in the UK but probably less known in the US. The score is also brilliant & compliments the adventurous nature of the film.

As a fan of Neil Gaiman I was lucky I didn’t miss this when it came out. As you know Princess Bride is based on a William Goldman story and that drew director Rob Reiner and many actors to it. Neil Gaiman has a lot more name recognition in Britain which probably explains how so many great British actors signed up.
