You guys have to remember that this is not the same as the original, this is based on the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The older film was called “Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory” and while it had SOME similarities to the original story, it was created by Gene Wilder and despised by Roald Dahl. This film though follows the book, even the words of the Oompa Loompa songs.

The touching moment where Charlie sees Willy's dad has all the news articles and stuff from watching Willy become a success was actually based on what happened between Tim Burton and his mother. They didn't have a good relationship, but towards the end of her life, Burton went to visit her and saw she had framed posters from all of his films
For context, Roald Dahl _hated_ the original, he said they took his story and made it much too saccharine, which is a wild thing to say when the story is about candy. This kept the spirit of the original, it was only greenlit when Dahl's widow saw they had modeled Charlie's house after Roald's old dilapidated writing shack.
Not that wild, because if you think about it, this story has dark undertones, being a story about candy is more of a facade. 5 kids go to a chocolate factory where 4 of them are put in traumatising, life-threatening situations, and the owner sadistically doesn't care and it's even implied it was all planned. More of a Roald Dahl style, the unique sense of creepiness, which this movie rolled with. This movie even traumatised my kid self
The thing about Dahl's stories is that they're whimsical on the surface but are very dark underneath, like Matilda or the Witches, so the original movie is indeed too mainstream happy.
And the part with Willie's father was based off of Tim Burton's relationship with his mother. They had a falling out, but near the end of her life, he visited her only to learn that she had kept posters of all of his movies.
The reason Willy winks in this one was so weird was because they wanted accurately represent someone who hasn’t interacted with people for 20 or so years
Also because Johnny Depp and the creators wanted to put a different spin on the character knowing if they didn't, people would compare it to Gene Wilder too much

He defines what an actor should be to me. His characters are so unique. Wonka is so very different than Edward Scissorhands and Capt Jack. I don't see Johnny Depp acting like Wonka; I feel like I'm actually watching Willy Wonka.
Grandpa George is such a real one in this movie, compared to the original where he had no lines. I'm glad that this movie gave each grandparent a clear personality
He’s definitely improved in this version. Grandpa Joe came across as a lot more selfish in the Wilder, but in this one he just seems happy that Charlie is getting a chance to have fun.

Those squirrels are real. An animal trainer named Michael Alexander spent 19 weeks training 40 rescue squirrels to open nuts. If it got past the health department, you could actually use squirrels to open nuts and seperate the nut from the shell at a factory level.

Tim Burton had already worked closely with Roald Dahl's widow on James and the Giant Peach. Which is why she had far more trust in him when it came to the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
fun fact: mike teavee, when willy wonka said he cracked the code is "He proves to be both scientifically and economically literate: he finds his Golden Ticket by taking the derivative of the Nikkei Index and analyzing the date codes of the other ticket finds, offsetting them by the weather that day, and then calculating the location of the next ticket, thus requiring him to purchase only a single Wonka Bar". I don’t believe Mike discussed how he finds the ticket in the book I believe that plot point only came in the 2005 film. The decision to make Mike an angry but brilliant techno nerd appears to have been taken by the 2005 film's writer John August and is an original creation for the Tim Burton film. Given that we're shown his obsession with video gaming, it's reasonable to assume that he saw locating the ticket as an intellectual challenge on a par with the sorts of puzzles you get in computer games and nothing more.
it kinda broke me when Willy met his dad. Specifically the awkward hug. Cuz they somehow reconciled, somehow they wanted to show they cared, so they both tried to give each other a hug, but NEITHER OF THEM KNEW HOW TO HUG. They are there, a bit confused, a bit embarassed, and somehow manage to hug... but the instant they realise they DIDNT KNOW how to hug is prett heartbreaking. At the end Willy receives the hug from the granny, and it seems he has become used to receiving hugs, so... nice :)
Deep Roy who played the Oompa Loompa's had more screen time than all the other actors combined because Tim Burton had him do EVERY Oompa Loompa individually. If the scene had 10 Oompa Loompas they would do take after take of him in each position the one would be. It is an incredibly impressive feat.
Fun fact: johnny depp and helena bonham carter after filming scenes for this movie would then go onto record their lines for another movie corpse bride so during this time the two were quite busy
I feel like they would’ve enjoyed this more if they weren’t so obsessed with comparing it to the Gene film. That’s not the original the book is and this film was closer to that, that’s why it’s very loved. They’re such separate films.

Also another thing is that Johnny Depp came up with his Willy Wonka character by mixing together a creepy children's tv show host and George Bush if he was stoned.. He went to Tim with the voice and Tim was like "wow...... Wow...." Pretty much speechless haha

This movie never tried to be the Gene Wilder version, it leaned into being the *book version* more. I love this one far more than the original. Also given Charlie having both parents in this one, too.
The book was titled "Charlie and..." but Quaker Oats, who financed the original movie, was planning to launch a Wonka candy line so they changed the title to "Willy Wonka and..." The candy line didn't work out btw.

I would love to see you guys react to the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movies! This version has a separate and loved place in my heart just like the older version. I grew up reading Dahl's books and immediately loved the dark whimsy of this version. Not to mention the fact that every time you see an Oompa Loompa, Deep Roy had to film that! He did all of the dancing and movements and none of them were copy/pasted.
Fun fact, the squirrels were mostly real! They trained a few squirrels for that scene, and had the walnuts mounted on sticks. People holding the other end of the sticks were making the walnuts move, and since the squirrels had their paws on the nuts, after removing the sticks in post production it looked like the squirrels were moving the nuts around. I think it was enhanced with CGI at least some parts of it) but there were real squirrels there!
This may sound weird, but I feel like the child actors are actually too good in this movie. They feel like real bratty kids in that I don't love to hate them. I just hate them. Simultaneously, I can't enjoy seeing them get their comeuppances because they feel too much like real, scared, vulnerable children, however bratty.
Indeed, they nailed the performances this movie, the kids (minus Charlie) are rotten like they should be, and they're generally more developed and interesting characters anyway, and they're demises are way more disturbing and discomforting than the previous movie

The superior version, I love the fantastical/whimsy yet almost dark nature of it. Also despite the use of cgi most of the sets, including the main river room, were actually fully built.
The cool thing about the room with the chocolate river is it’s almost entirely practical. Tim Burton was dead set on having as little cgi as possible. You see the same thing again with the squirrels, and every shot of the Oompa Loompas is Deep Roy acting out a separate take.
Adore this film. Was looking forward to this, bit of a let down how they were more concerned with the 70s version and talked about that more. Roald hated that version for being inaccurate and creepy, I love that Tim was so respectful to Roald’s memory and made it so close to the book. Johnny was a perfect Willy Wonka. Also the squirrels were real, a dude spent weeks training them all.
Y'all keep calling the 1971 adaption "the original", but they're both adaptions of the book. This is not an adaption of the 1971 version, it's exactly as "original" as 1971 adaption was - based off a book. I love Johnny Depp's funny and weird portrayal of Wonka. It's not as creepy or scary as Wilder's.
Nope, the "original" was LOOSELY based on the book. the producers literally threw out the script that Dahl wrote, and even Gene Wilder, as much as a like him, didn't try to be wonka, he was acting as himself. you mean accurately portraying the character from the books, instead of twisting him into an almost inrecognizable caricature of the character that even the author of the books hated? i suppose so.... seriously gene, does not fit the character as presented by the book at all. depp's performance is a 100 times more accurate and faithful to what the character is supposed to be like.

I just love this version of Willy wonka. Tim burton and Johnny Depp is the most wholesome duo in cinematic history. I recommend you also watch Johnny Depp in finding neverland where he does a dramatic role so different to what he is used to. He is just so versatile. But mostly I would like to see a Sweeney Todd reaction, It’s just a masterpiece of Tim burton, Johnny Depp, Helena bonham carter and Alan rickman❤
Yeah. Original implies that this movie is an adaptation of the first movie. When really it's an adaptation of the book that's just more accurate to the book, so it will have differences.
It’s important to note that this movie is a direct interpretation of the book, not a remake of the movie. Tom Burton even told the staff not to watch the original movie so they don’t draw any inspiration from it. He wanted to stay as truthful to the book as possible
It was so unique to me to see Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka, and he put his foot in the role, he and everybody did a great job in this movie. I remember seeing commercials of it, back in the day when I was in first grade, then I get to see it for the first time when made reruns of the 2005 version. Hope you guys love it 😊
The original had Dahl credited for the screenplay of the movie, but the creators changed a lot of what Dahl wrote. Also, the original was actually made as a commercial for a brand of Wonka candy. Dahl hated the original so much that he never allowed an adaptation of his books until he passed away. When he did pass away, his wife and daughter wanted to redeem Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and created this movie to be a perfect adaptation.
An interesting fact is that the person casted for the Ompa lumpa is one of the highest paid actors in the whole movie due to the amount of work he had to do, he literally acted as everyone of his replica by shooting again and again physically- none of the visuals of him are computer generated.
Depp can go from captain Jack to willy wonka with such ease it's incredible I love this movie and I don't get why old gen fans hate it it's really not fair just because they are nostalgia blinded
Right! I know quite a few people prefer Wilder to Depp, but I honestly liked Depp's version of Wonka better. Telling people to stop mumbling when you don't care for what they are saying is gold 😁

Would be so cool if you guys could react to Prince of Egypt! It's such a good movie with great animation and absolutely AMAZING songs and music by Hans Zimmer. It's a depiction of Moses' life but it is the one movie both religious and non religious people can agree is a masterpiece. Fun fact, it was made by Dreamworks and the people who messed up on it were sent to work on Shrek instead as punishment and they called it "getting Shreked".

Gonna go off on a whim, but out of the two Chocolate Factory films, this is my preferred one: - More book accurate - Better, more complete ending - More interesting characterisation (the original characters were really basic and flat) - Mr Bucket exists (and this raises the stakes when he loses his job) - Better grandparents (other 3 in the original might as well not have been in the movie) - Buckets actually feel like a tight-knit family - Excellent cinematography (compared to the dull execution of the first movie) - Cool atmosphere - Superb sets - Varied and catchy music (not the same copy-paste template) - Wonka’s backstory - Dahl hated the original movie (even said it was too sappy and saccharine) - More attention to detail - Was clearly a passion project instead of a commercial pretending to be a movie - Poetic in some areas - Better at showing instead of telling

this movie unfortuanetly gets a lot of hate, simply because most people don't do proper research and don't realize that it's not "a remake" and has nothing to do with the 1971 movie. in fact, during production of this movie everyone involved was strictly forbidden from watching the 1971 movie, so as to not get influced by it. charlie and the chocolate factory, just like the 1971 willy wonka movie before it are both seperate and completely unrelated adaptations of the same source material, the 1969 book of the same name. only this version actually follows the book and correctly portrays the characters accurately to how they are presented in the book (minus the whole wonka's dad being a dentist narrative they added), unlike the 1971 movie, which completely bastardized wonka's character, as well as grandpa joe's. even the original author of the book hated the 1971 movie and how much it deviated from the book, calling the whole thing "too saccharine, sappy and sentimental". he especially hated gene and his portrayal of wonka and how inaccurat it was to wonka's personality in the book. and honestly, i can't help but to agree, simply seeing as how bad the reception to this movie was, because of the stain gene and the 1971 left on the franchise.
I was challenged by a teacher in the 5th grade to read the whole book in a day. I don’t even remember what my prize was when I did it, but I remember the “up and out” chapter from the book so distinctly. Weird thing about me: I always say “up and out” when I have a door lock that is vertical when it’s unlocked. 😂
So as I'm sure a hundred people have already told you by now, this one better represents the book. In my opinion while it doesn't hold the same charm and build up as the 1971 film, it is still enjoyable in its own right. Half the humor misses, but the rest I found myself laughing to. As said before this film was more accurate to the original book. The golden eggs, heavy lifting drinks, the horror part in the tunnel were all added in the original. The backstory with Wonkas father wasn’t in the book but added into the film.

Fun Fact: People get pissy that Tim Burton told everyone NOT to watch the 1971 movie for reference, thou the reason is coz Tim Burton wanted to make this movie CLOSER to the book. For those who don't know the OG 1971 movie is only very loosley based on the book, roughly 35% of the book in movie and in the book, no villain it was added at the last minute to 1971 movie. This movie, is much, much closer, with a ratio closer to 70% adaptation from the book. In that light these movies MUST be viewed separately, but people won't and thus this movie gets shit on when it's not deserved.

I remember everyone hating this when it came out. As times passed, I think everyone feels kinder to it. Especially since it’s come out that it’s truer to the source material .

I believe the pink sheep scene was an inside joke, due to the fact that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton also did 1994's "Ed Wood." Depp played Wood, the film director who wrote, produced, directed and edited what is called the worst film ever made ("Plan 9 From Outer Space") and also cross-dressed, his favorite clothing item being pink angora sweaters.
This movie influenced language for a couple years. People were always saying, “Good morning starshine, the Earth says hello!” and shouting out “Mumbler!” I also used to constantly mimic that silly little nervous laugh Wonka did. So it was iconic for a few years, but now it’s mostly forgotten and doesn’t have the long-lasting memes and cultural impact of the OG movie. Still a great movie though.
Fun Fact: "Good morning starshine/The Earth says hello" is actually a quote. It's a lyric from the song "Good Morning Starshine" from the musical "Hair". It's got a lot of nonsensical parts to it, so it fits quite well.

I once re-watched this after a break up, and my friend was shocked because she thought it was too dark. Whereas i found that, and the sarcasm, hysterical! Nothing about Willie's father was in the book, but i actually enjoyed that addition. And the book did use squirrels not geese, no idea why the first one changed that.

Not that wild, because if you think about it, this story has dark undertones, being a story about candy is more of a facade. 5 kids go to a chocolate factory where 4 of them are put in traumatising, life-threatening situations, and the owner sadistically doesn't care and it's even implied it was all planned. More of a Roald Dahl style, the unique sense of creepiness, which this movie rolled with. This movie even traumatised my kid self
The thing about Dahl's stories is that they're whimsical on the surface but are very dark underneath, like Matilda or the Witches, so the original movie is indeed too mainstream happy.
And the part with Willie's father was based off of Tim Burton's relationship with his mother. They had a falling out, but near the end of her life, he visited her only to learn that she had kept posters of all of his movies.
The reason Willy winks in this one was so weird was because they wanted accurately represent someone who hasn’t interacted with people for 20 or so years

He’s definitely improved in this version. Grandpa Joe came across as a lot more selfish in the Wilder, but in this one he just seems happy that Charlie is getting a chance to have fun.

Those squirrels are real. An animal trainer named Michael Alexander spent 19 weeks training 40 rescue squirrels to open nuts. If it got past the health department, you could actually use squirrels to open nuts and seperate the nut from the shell at a factory level.

Tim Burton had already worked closely with Roald Dahl's widow on James and the Giant Peach. Which is why she had far more trust in him when it came to the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I don’t believe Mike discussed how he finds the ticket in the book I believe that plot point only came in the 2005 film. The decision to make Mike an angry but brilliant techno nerd appears to have been taken by the 2005 film's writer John August and is an original creation for the Tim Burton film. Given that we're shown his obsession with video gaming, it's reasonable to assume that he saw locating the ticket as an intellectual challenge on a par with the sorts of puzzles you get in computer games and nothing more.
it kinda broke me when Willy met his dad. Specifically the awkward hug. Cuz they somehow reconciled, somehow they wanted to show they cared, so they both tried to give each other a hug, but NEITHER OF THEM KNEW HOW TO HUG. They are there, a bit confused, a bit embarassed, and somehow manage to hug... but the instant they realise they DIDNT KNOW how to hug is prett heartbreaking. At the end Willy receives the hug from the granny, and it seems he has become used to receiving hugs, so... nice :)
I like that they're both wearing the same kind of coat and rubber gloves, that despite going into candy, Wonka still grew up like his dad in a way.
Deep Roy who played the Oompa Loompa's had more screen time than all the other actors combined because Tim Burton had him do EVERY Oompa Loompa individually. If the scene had 10 Oompa Loompas they would do take after take of him in each position the one would be. It is an incredibly impressive feat.

Fun fact: Roald Dahl actually hated the Gene Wilder version as it strayed so far from his book. I would love to see you guys react to the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movies! This version has a separate and loved place in my heart just like the older version. I grew up reading Dahl's books and immediately loved the dark whimsy of this version. Not to mention the fact that every time you see an Oompa Loompa, Deep Roy had to film that! He did all of the dancing and movements and none of them were copy/pasted.
Fun fact, the squirrels were mostly real! They trained a few squirrels for that scene, and had the walnuts mounted on sticks. People holding the other end of the sticks were making the walnuts move, and since the squirrels had their paws on the nuts, after removing the sticks in post production it looked like the squirrels were moving the nuts around. I think it was enhanced with CGI at least some parts of it) but there were real squirrels there!

This may sound weird, but I feel like the child actors are actually too good in this movie. They feel like real bratty kids in that I don't love to hate them. I just hate them. Simultaneously, I can't enjoy seeing them get their comeuppances because they feel too much like real, scared, vulnerable children, however bratty.
Indeed, they nailed the performances this movie, the kids (minus Charlie) are rotten like they should be, and they're generally more developed and interesting characters anyway, and they're demises are way more disturbing and discomforting than the previous movie

The superior version, I love the fantastical/whimsy yet almost dark nature of it.
Also despite the use of cgi most of the sets, including the main river room, were actually fully built.

The cool thing about the room with the chocolate river is it’s almost entirely practical. Tim Burton was dead set on having as little cgi as possible. You see the same thing again with the squirrels, and every shot of the Oompa Loompas is Deep Roy acting out a separate take.
Adore this film. Was looking forward to this, bit of a let down how they were more concerned with the 70s version and talked about that more. Roald hated that version for being inaccurate and creepy, I love that Tim was so respectful to Roald’s memory and made it so close to the book. Johnny was a perfect Willy Wonka. Also the squirrels were real, a dude spent weeks training them all.

It was so unique to me to see Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka, and he put his foot in the role, he and everybody did a great job in this movie.

The original had Dahl credited for the screenplay of the movie, but the creators changed a lot of what Dahl wrote. Also, the original was actually made as a commercial for a brand of Wonka candy. Dahl hated the original so much that he never allowed an adaptation of his books until he passed away. When he did pass away, his wife and daughter wanted to redeem Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and created this movie to be a perfect adaptation.
An interesting fact is that the person casted for the Ompa lumpa is one of the highest paid actors in the whole movie due to the amount of work he had to do, he literally acted as everyone of his replica by shooting again and again physically- none of the visuals of him are computer generated.
Depp can go from captain Jack to willy wonka with such ease it's incredible I love this movie and I don't get why old gen fans hate it it's really not fair just because they are nostalgia blinded

Would be so cool if you guys could react to Prince of Egypt! It's such a good movie with great animation and absolutely AMAZING songs and music by Hans Zimmer. It's a depiction of Moses' life but it is the one movie both religious and non religious people can agree is a masterpiece. Fun fact, it was made by Dreamworks and the people who messed up on it were sent to work on Shrek instead as punishment and they called it "getting Shreked".

The oompa loompa actor is legendary. He played one of the hobbits in Lord of the Rings. Quiet a remarkable man

Gonna go off on a whim, but out of the two Chocolate Factory films, this is my preferred one:
- More book accurate
- Better, more complete ending
- More interesting characterisation (the original characters were really basic and flat)
- Mr Bucket exists (and this raises the stakes when he loses his job)
- Better grandparents (other 3 in the original might as well not have been in the movie)
- Buckets actually feel like a tight-knit family
- Excellent cinematography (compared to the dull execution of the first movie)
- Cool atmosphere
- Superb sets
- Varied and catchy music (not the same copy-paste template)
- Wonka’s backstory
- Dahl hated the original movie (even said it was too sappy and saccharine)
- More attention to detail

this movie unfortuanetly gets a lot of hate, simply because most people don't do proper research and don't realize that it's not "a remake" and has nothing to do with the 1971 movie. in fact, during production of this movie everyone involved was strictly forbidden from watching the 1971 movie, so as to not get influced by it.
charlie and the chocolate factory, just like the 1971 willy wonka movie before it are both seperate and completely unrelated adaptations of the same source material, the 1969 book of the same name. only this version actually follows the book and correctly portrays the characters accurately to how they are presented in the book (minus the whole wonka's dad being a dentist narrative they added), unlike the 1971 movie, which completely bastardized wonka's character, as well as grandpa joe's.
even the original author of the book hated the 1971 movie and how much it deviated from the book, calling the whole thing "too saccharine, sappy and sentimental". he especially hated gene and his portrayal of wonka and how inaccurat it was to wonka's personality in the book.
and honestly, i can't help but to agree, simply seeing as how bad the reception to this movie was, because of the stain gene and the 1971 left on the franchise.
I was challenged by a teacher in the 5th grade to read the whole book in a day. I don’t even remember what my prize was when I did it, but I remember the “up and out” chapter from the book so distinctly.

Fun Fact: People get pissy that Tim Burton told everyone NOT to watch the 1971 movie for reference, thou the reason is coz Tim Burton wanted to make this movie CLOSER to the book. For those who don't know the OG 1971 movie is only very loosley based on the book, roughly 35% of the book in movie and in the book, no villain it was added at the last minute to 1971 movie.
This movie, is much, much closer, with a ratio closer to 70% adaptation from the book.
In that light these movies MUST be viewed separately, but people won't and thus this movie gets shit on when it's not deserved.

In the german dub they gave augustus a really think bavarian dialect because well you cant really do german accent in a german dub😂

I love this version it is just so good and funny. I also love how more heavily based on the book it is, and the scene with the squirrels. They actually had real trained squirrels in this film. I'd love to see how u guys react to Mike Myers Cat In The Hat film just because of how u reacted to this
I remember everyone hating this when it came out. As times passed, I think everyone feels kinder to it. Especially since it’s come out that it’s truer to the source material .
Johnny Depp said he created the Wonka persona by imagining what George W. Bush would be like really stoned.

I believe the pink sheep scene was an inside joke, due to the fact that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton also did 1994's "Ed Wood." Depp played Wood, the film director who wrote, produced, directed and edited what is called the worst film ever made ("Plan 9 From Outer Space") and also cross-dressed, his favorite clothing item being pink angora sweaters.

This movie influenced language for a couple years. People were always saying, “Good morning starshine, the Earth says hello!” and shouting out “Mumbler!” I also used to constantly mimic that silly little nervous laugh Wonka did. So it was iconic for a few years, but now it’s mostly forgotten and doesn’t have the long-lasting memes and cultural impact of the OG movie. Still a great movie though.
Fun Fact: "Good morning starshine/The Earth says hello" is actually a quote. It's a lyric from the song "Good Morning Starshine" from the musical "Hair". It's got a lot of nonsensical parts to it, so it fits quite well.

I once re-watched this after a break up, and my friend was shocked because she thought it was too dark. Whereas i found that, and the sarcasm, hysterical!
Nothing about Willie's father was in the book, but i actually enjoyed that addition. And the book did use squirrels not geese, no idea why the first one changed that.
