I normally do loop method, rows if possible, but if I do need to do the tail method, I leave a longer tail and thread my needle with it and run it under previous stitches like you normally finish off... Then you don't have to try and keep the tail in place while stitching over it...

I have been stitching for many years and one day decided to watch one of your Crosstitch university videos. I learned that day to pull one strand from my floss to get started, and it has been amazing ever since. No tangles. 😊

regardless of what type of floss I'm using, I always stitch in rows, but I'll use loop if I'm doing a smaller section of stitches, and tail for bigger sections of color. Less stopping to thread my needle that way!
Since I just came back to stitching after a long break, variegated thread is new to me! I stitch in hand and normally have done loop method in horizontal rows, but am looking forward to playing with this style of thread and it's techniques!

Great video. I've always done tail and rows, but recently changed to tail and Xs if using fancy floss. I just can't seem to understand the loop method. I get how it works, I just don't understand how you use it consistently? Like if you start with a loop bout o ly have 20-30 stitches in that color so lots of thread left over, do you throw it away? Or use tail merhod until it's used? Or try to Guage how much you will use for the stitches to be worked? I guess in saying I'm an "all the same way" kinda girl! 😁 Always love your tips and tricks!
The tail method uses MORE thread. You are starting with two strands of floss instead of one strand folded over on itself. You would need to compare two full strands worth of the looped floss to the one section of tail method floss so that you were comparing like to like.
I learned using the tail method, but learned the loop method watching your videos. I prefer the loop method for securing my thread. Easier than holding the tail and making sure you're stitching covers that tail to secure. Sometimes you feel like a contortionist! Even before learning the loop method, I used to flip my threads to break up the varigation prior to stitching because I don't like large "blocks" of color, but wanted the subtle changes in color.
I was taught to pull one thread at a time as it puffs them up 🙂 When you turned your work upside down it reminded me of doing needlepoint. Being lefthand I could never start a row it seemed!
I stitch on high counts, so only use 1 strand at a time. If the floss is very subtly variegated, I stitch in rows because the subtle variegation doesn't really show much different than if I do one X at a time. However, f it is moderate to highly variegated, I stitch one X at a time because it does make a difference in the outcome. I also decide on the moderate to highly variegated whether to stitch vertically or horizontally depending on the end result I hope to achieve.

I do the loop method from the top. I find one x at a time to be very tedious. Everyone has to do what works for them. 😊 Also as a fairly new stitcher I’ve only used DMC. A few days ago I received my first pattern that calls for Classic Colorworks…..which I ordered.
Hello Tricia! We recommend the method because you can’t do the loop method with one strand. We recommend stitching in a row or one stitch at a time is up to you in how much variegation you would like to show.
I really appreciated this video! Is it possible for you to do a variegation tutorial when using multiple colored floss? Threadworx offer one floss with multiple colors in it. I love them! I buy them! I have no idea how to use them? I see them used in samplers often and I have no idea how that works? How do you know where your colors will land? So many questions and I have not been able to find any explanation on it. Help!?
Hello calafia110! Thank you for the suggestion. You won't know where the colors will land because it depends on where you start on the floss each time and where you end each time. If you have to pull some stitches out. You can not always start at the same place in the floss. It is just to give an overall look of a project with only using one floss color that changes.
I don't use the Loop method with any fancy floss. One X at a time is the best way to use Overdyes, IMHO. Row directions for me are usually horizontal, yet it depends on what it is, like a door, a wood barn board, a fence, flowers can be filled it, all depends on the look I want to achieve on that section or motif.

I noticed that your demonstration of the techniques seemed to be about how to stitch quickly. It felt like you were trying to qualify for the Olympics and needed to shave seconds off your times. I stitch loop - rows and I use a “stab” method because it is relaxing. That is why I stitch to begin with. It relaxes me and makes me focus on just one thing. I would like to suggest a day where you slow down and enjoy the feel of the fabric in your hand and the thread pulling through the fabric. It can work wonders for a busy mind. Try it!
I understand where you are coming from as that is why I started stitching too. Kimberly, however, runs a business. In order for her to keep up with a wide variety of projects and meet deadlines, she doesn’t have the same luxury we have. Plus Kimberly has a personality that thrives off of deadlines and she loves to create all the things. So while slow stitching benefits some people, it would probably drive others just as batty as Olympic speed stitching might drive you.

I recently used variegated and used the loop method one stitch at a time. I prefer the loop - find it much quicker and secure.

Tail using two threads one stitch at a time for me because some variegated threads are very subtle.

The tail rows are using two threads, loop method uses one. You would have more thread left using the tail method.
& it seems to tangle or shred more as all of the thread is being pulled through the hole the needle makes ! Ugh!

Does the tail method really use less floss? Is the left over floss equal to the one strand you didn't use for the loop method?
