    Your flower bed, The white daisy looks like Feverfew , the small pinky White flower looked like Campion ( theres a red (dk pink) and a white so you've probably got the two + hybrids The geranium, is probably Bloody cranesbill (or i a cultivar) ... you need some welsh poppies in there and some night scented stock and it will be a riot.
    Sweet williams, it will soon be time to sow them and walflowers ( I remember my dad sowing them in a nursery bed then transplanting them - once you have them established they will self seed year after year.
    DOn't worry too much about trying to grow everything, just enjoy growing and picking what you get , theres always next year

      Hi Nick, Thank you for the flower descriptions - you're right about the Welsh poppies 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿.
      I've just sown some sweet Williams today, the more the merrier I say!
      I agree with the mantra of 'there's always next year'... it's nice to take the small wins and it seems this year is especially tough 🌨️

    Hi Dora,
    If you pinch the growing tips out of the broad beans once the flowers have set they'll be less attractive to the aphids! Also, keep an eye out for ants as they'll farm aphids on your plants.
    You have a great attitude enjoying the harvests no matter the size and not letting the losses discourage you!
    Thank you for sharing your experiences.

    • @doras.allotment
      @doras.allotment  3 месяца назад

      Hello 👋🏻 I did try to pinch the broad beans out but sadly hasn't done the trick on this occasion (unless maybe I didn't do it quite right)... it baffles me this ant aphid farming!! There's a high chance of this as I have a LOT of ants.
      Aw thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment - let's hope I can get us to harvesting those 2 carrots 😅🥕

    If I was you i would definitely get rid of all the straw and grass clippings around the potatoes as that will only encourage the slugs and snails to hide in there during the day and come out at night and eat all you crops hope that helps it’s been a really really bad year for them which doesn’t help

    • @doras.allotment
      @doras.allotment  3 месяца назад +1

      Ahh, I’ve been using grass clippings to earth up instead of soil which has been great for the pots but yes maybe creating a home for the stinky slugs! I also put the straw down as I heard they don’t like crawling over it… but actually it sounds the opposite! I’m keeping a close eye but will likely remove this now too and keep to the coffee grounds. Thanks for your comment 😃

      Hi Richard, thank you for commenting - I'll have to take a look. Sadly I don't have a hose here and am reliant on precious rain water via the watering butts/cans... I may have to make a few trips to the river and take some time to try and wash them off. Happy gardening back to you 😃☀️

      @@doras.allotment You can prune anything to the height that you want. If the first is hazel you can even coppice it, cut it down to the ground every few years for poles and pea sticks.

    It's so annoying that the slugs have eaten so much of your produce. I really like the idea of the cages but I'm not sure how you can block slugs out unless you put some tarp or a cover around the bottom outside of the fencing (I don't know if that makes sense aha!) But your plot is looking lovely so really great effort. Well done ♡

    If you choose the dwarf variety 'the Sutton', you can sow your broad beans in November for harvesting around now. I find that about three quarters will germinate over winter and then I sow a few more indoors in February to plug any gaps. Since I started doing this, I haven't had any problems with aphids although that may just be pure coincidence. I do the same with peas (var Meteor) and I'm eating them already, and I do the same with onions (var Shakespeare) and they're nearly ready now... another couple of weeks maybe. Of all the overwintering onions that I've tried, Shakespeare gives me the best yield and they store really well strung up in the garage.
    With all of them, I hoop and fleece to protect them during the winter months. The growing season is a bit shorter in Co Durham compared to the Cotswold's, so I find this extends the growing season quite a bit

    • @doras.allotment
      @doras.allotment  3 месяца назад

      Noted about 'the sutton', hopefully doing that will help as the poor things are really suffering with aphids.
      Nice, I'll have to try and get my hands on some Shakespeare too then 🧅
      Thanks for knowledge sharing 🙂

    If you haven't dug out the chard, you could try cutting out the flowering spikes and see if they regrow. I love chard, the slugs leave it alone, the pigeons don't seem to bother with it, they keep producing right through the winter and into the following year. I personally prefer the white and orange ones to the red, but that's because I wait until they grow really big leaves, which the red seem less able to do. I pull the leaves off (a bit like rhubarb) and let them re-grow. I personally don't bother too much with the stalks, although they are perfectly edible, so I take the centre vein out, shred the leaves, give them a wash and wilt them down in a wok, leave them to cool, then squash into balls and freeze them on a tray before bagging them up. Then over the Winter and the following Spring I add them to soups, broths and stews. Packed full of iron, magnesium and vitamins, particularly vit K and vit A. Marvellous!
    You mentioned winding the climbing beans around the canes, but you were winding them in a clockwise direction and they wind in the opposite direction in the northern hemisphere, so they'll just unwind themselves again every time you do it

    • @doras.allotment
      @doras.allotment  3 месяца назад

      Hello 👋🏻 I have cut off the one and it seems to be sprouting up again, maybe I'll do the same with the others... in the last day or so they seem to be being attacked by Aphids.
      Great tip about freezing your chard, and thanks I didn't know that about the beans 🫘
