    Your flower bed, The white daisy looks like Feverfew , the small pinky White flower looked like Campion ( theres a red (dk pink) and a white so you've probably got the two + hybrids The geranium, is probably Bloody cranesbill (or i a cultivar) ... you need some welsh poppies in there and some night scented stock and it will be a riot. Sweet williams, it will soon be time to sow them and walflowers ( I remember my dad sowing them in a nursery bed then transplanting them - once you have them established they will self seed year after year. DOn't worry too much about trying to grow everything, just enjoy growing and picking what you get , theres always next year

    If you choose the dwarf variety 'the Sutton', you can sow your broad beans in November for harvesting around now. I find that about three quarters will germinate over winter and then I sow a few more indoors in February to plug any gaps. Since I started doing this, I haven't had any problems with aphids although that may just be pure coincidence. I do the same with peas (var Meteor) and I'm eating them already, and I do the same with onions (var Shakespeare) and they're nearly ready now... another couple of weeks maybe. Of all the overwintering onions that I've tried, Shakespeare gives me the best yield and they store really well strung up in the garage. With all of them, I hoop and fleece to protect them during the winter months. The growing season is a bit shorter in Co Durham compared to the Cotswold's, so I find this extends the growing season quite a bit

    • @doras.allotment
      @doras.allotment 9 дней назад

      Noted about 'the sutton', hopefully doing that will help as the poor things are really suffering with aphids. Nice, I'll have to try and get my hands on some Shakespeare too then 🧅 Thanks for knowledge sharing 🙂

    If you haven't dug out the chard, you could try cutting out the flowering spikes and see if they regrow. I love chard, the slugs leave it alone, the pigeons don't seem to bother with it, they keep producing right through the winter and into the following year. I personally prefer the white and orange ones to the red, but that's because I wait until they grow really big leaves, which the red seem less able to do. I pull the leaves off (a bit like rhubarb) and let them re-grow. I personally don't bother too much with the stalks, although they are perfectly edible, so I take the centre vein out, shred the leaves, give them a wash and wilt them down in a wok, leave them to cool, then squash into balls and freeze them on a tray before bagging them up. Then over the Winter and the following Spring I add them to soups, broths and stews. Packed full of iron, magnesium and vitamins, particularly vit K and vit A. Marvellous! You mentioned winding the climbing beans around the canes, but you were winding them in a clockwise direction and they wind in the opposite direction in the northern hemisphere, so they'll just unwind themselves again every time you do it

    • @doras.allotment
      @doras.allotment 9 дней назад

      Hello 👋🏻 I have cut off the one and it seems to be sprouting up again, maybe I'll do the same with the others... in the last day or so they seem to be being attacked by Aphids. Great tip about freezing your chard, and thanks I didn't know that about the beans 🫘

    If I was you i would definitely get rid of all the straw and grass clippings around the potatoes as that will only encourage the slugs and snails to hide in there during the day and come out at night and eat all you crops hope that helps it’s been a really really bad year for them which doesn’t help

    • @doras.allotment
      @doras.allotment 10 дней назад

      Ahh, I’ve been using grass clippings to earth up instead of soil which has been great for the pots but yes maybe creating a home for the stinky slugs! I also put the straw down as I heard they don’t like crawling over it… but actually it sounds the opposite! I’m keeping a close eye but will likely remove this now too and keep to the coffee grounds. Hi Dora, If you pinch the growing tips out of the broad beans once the flowers have set they'll be less attractive to the aphids! Also, keep an eye out for ants as they'll farm aphids on your plants. You have a great attitude enjoying the harvests no matter the size and not letting the losses discourage you! Agree with the earlier comment about planting leeks. I like to water the ground thoroughly and then compress the surface with a plank, which helps to stop the soil collapsing in when creating the hole with a dibber. Before dropping the leek in the hole, I trim the roots to stimulate them to grow and to make it easier to drop the plant in the hole. I also trim the tops to reduce the burden on the plant while it establishes itself in the ground. Finally give them a good watering in to get the roots right down to the bottom of the hole, then just leave them alone. The plant will fill the hole as it grows. I usually wait until I've lifted my first early potatoes, which contains my excitement and stops me from planting them out too early. Here in the north of England, I find that any sort of hot dry spell in late summer causes my leeks to bolt if they've been put in too early, but if I wait, this doesn't happen. I end up with smaller leeks, but I don't mind that tbh. Some people like to tie cardboard tubes around each stem once they get bigger, in order to blanch them and get a longer white part, but I prefer the stronger taste of the green part if I'm honest, so I don't bother with that

      Thank you Andrew, really appreciate the help! I planted some more with a dibber, but let the water fill the hole 🫣 so I will have to get some more seedlings and try again… third time lucky. It will be interesting to compare results ☺️

      @@doras.allotment don't worry about the water filling the hole by washing soil in. The leeks will be just fine

      @@user-ze7fr3cc8w that’s reassuring. I did try another time on Weds and filmed that too as now I’m very intrigued as to how the different plantings will turn out 😃

    Just a thought, Your corn needs to grow big enough to support the weight of the other 2 plants. If it's not it will topple over. I learned this the hard way. Your plot is coming along nicely.

      Oh no! I bet that was a bit heartbreaking. I have planted dwarf beans so don’t expect these to climb in the traditional 3 sisters sense 🙂 thanks for watching and commenting!

    Just a tip when planting out leeks, you need to make a hole with a dibber and simply drop them in and water them. SPINACH looks fantastic

      Thank you Julie - I totally forgot about this!! Will have to do so with my own transplants. Hopefully these ones will survive! Thanks for watching all the way through 💚

    Thanks for the update Dora, the plot is looking really good, and I agree it is a beautiful setting ! The eggs in the wood chips are ant eggs and larvae, we have a lot of problems with them too, they seem to get into everything, leave it open when you can the birds will help clear them up ! Don't take it personally with the Sweetcorn, I've heard many people saying they've struggled with Germination this year so have ended up buying some ! I must try that perennial spinach, Chard is such a useful crop as it stands through the winter !

      Thank you Andy, I’m pleased you enjoyed this weeks update! I will have to leave the woodchip open next time I pop down… do the ants cause any problems to crops do you know? That makes me feel a bit better, I’ll try again next year 🌽 The tree spinach is delicious and so prolific for one plant! I’ve researched it a little more and now I’m on the fence with whether it’s a perennial - I don’t think it is. But it is due to grow up to 5ft so I’m intrigued and will definitely grow again next year! Have a good rest of your day 🌱

      @@doras.allotment The Ants can be a problem in two ways - in pots and raised beds their tunnelling dries out the soil to the point that some plants just wither and fail, but worse they actively farm Aphids for their "Honeydew" secretions and will relocate them onto your crops. They are more of an issue in drier areas, we are coastal and have a sandy soil so they are a big problem for us ! Thanks for the info I'll look into the tree spinach !

      😮🤯 you’ve shocked me about the ant aphid farming - quite incredible really! Highly recommend, even if just for an annual 🙂
