  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Launched to a host of impressive review scores matching some of the industries best. A high the series hasn't hit in over a decade. Their success in the open world genre exposes the one of the industries weak points. Fashion over function. Development times in AAA keep getting longer. Square Enix had other plans.

YES, I agree. When I’m considering how much I like a game, I largely go off how the game makes me feel, the overall experience. A game is so much more than graphics, the narrative, characters, gameplay etc are so important. Rebirth made me feel like a kid again, immersed in another world and loving it.

Then 5 chapters later the character is back alive for some bullshit reason and nothing significant happened except all the drame online.
Anyway, back on topic, I will never take for granted all the work that the devs put into these games and to pull Rebirth off in 3 years and deliver the quality it has when other companies need almost twice as long (and even then fall short) is nothing short of baffling.

Vincent and Sid were simply thrown into the team as baggage. The ending is stupid and ruins the entire plot and atmosphere. This makes me sad and angry. It would be better if they made the open world 2 times smaller, but would reveal the plot and characters better.

    "There wasn't pre-production purgatory."
This has me thinking that, while it IS true, the idea of remaking FFVII is one that had been floated about the fandom for 20 or so years at this point. The game may not have experienced a pre-production purgatory, but the playerbase certainly felt like they were in one. It didn't help that, over the years, the series would receive a lot of additions to its entries such as the Advent Children movie, Crisis Core, etc... You can't deny they were the kind of thing that made you go "wow! imagine if the OG FFVII could look like this!" The PS3 tech demo was like, the cherry on the tease cake.

Yep. I mean at some point graphics won't be able to evolve that much anyway. You can only cram so much textures into a game. Oh, maybe the grass could moving!.... And then what? What will they complain about after that? Then it will be just about the numbers and how many fps they're running or if it's 4K or 8K. I honestly can't see the importance of those types of things compared to gameplay. Personally I don't even see the difference between 30 fps vs 60 fps, let alone 120 but the drama about such things is always disproportionate.

Actually FF16 was the end of that struggle. Opinions on the direction they went with the gameplay aside, the game had a pretty smooth development process and they knew from day one how they were going to handle it. The scenario was written and completed during pre-pro, in engine gameplay was shown at announcement, they were adamant about not showing anything else until they had a release date in mind, etc.
Rebirth continuing that smooth process is awesome though. A 3 year turnaround during a pandemic is insane, and it was all because they kept the dev team together. Literally no other publisher has any excuse.

    Fantastic video!
And this is actually a topic a friend of mine was discussing the other day in a more general sense that are games now becoming too big for their own good?
In terms of scope and budgets and all sorts rhat we are now seeing reach unsustainable levels to where we start getting shocked when we see a game come out and be solid with a small budget like what we saw Sucker Punch do with Ghost Of Tsushima using a fraction of what some kf these studios use these days. Where the focus now is constantly on the visuals and magnitude of the games rather than giving us maybe a smaller game with more substance and something that can be released in bite sizes maybe every 2-3 years or so. Coz even now for example we are seeing what has become of Naughty dog where we would have normally had some games in this cycle even Rockstar another one etc
But yeah that tangent of mine is just a random wider point on the industry away from the topic at hand.

Lightning Returns needs to be mentioned more for so many reasons. The 1st truly open world FF game with no zones like FF12 but at the same time it's the last game in the mainline series with a true turnbased atb system that actually was one of the best battle systems in the series. I think the JRPG genre is becoming less popular these days, tho i can only speculate why that is. And as someone whose been a fan of the series since 1999 when i 1st played FF8. Great video. Ive always accepted that if a game is to be truly huge in scope and create a rich and varied world full of towns bustling with life, vast and fully explorable open planes with stunning vistas, and a massive variety of enemy encounters, often with multiple enemies on screen at once, there WILL be visual trade offs with the current console tech we have. I went into rebirth already accepting of this fact. I’d much rather have a slightly blurry patch far off in the distance or a low res apple than make everything super high res but reduce the scope of the world. For me I was actually impressed that they managed to hold a very consistent 60fps in the performance mode. Frame rate drops break immersion for me way more than minor visual compromises.
I also think more generally, graphics are being looked at in the wrong way. People seem obsessed with resolution and pixel counts these days. Don’t get me wrong there’s definitely a basic acceptable standard for this stuff, and it’s nice when a game looks nice and polished, but it’s not the most important thing- What really counts is good art direction and design. And rebirth nailed that totally. Another example is Elden Ring. Does the games visual fidelity blow you away? Not really. Often up close things look pretty basic. But the art design is stunning, and that’s what is memorable.

I have to ask, when you say frame rate drops break your immersion, in what way is that? I ask because honestly I don't see the difference between 30 fps or 60 fps at all. I switched a bit between graphical and performance in the beginning and while I did see a slight improvement in sharpness and detail in Graphics mode (and I do mean slight, at least to me) in terms of movement I see absolutely no difference between modes. Now granted, my eyes aren't the best but every time I hear people say they can clearly see the difference between 30 and 60, or even 60 and 120 fps I'm just like 'how?' 😅

    • @sethel1

@@jarosbodytko6462 no I mean when games have frame rate drops in performance mode. Take for example final fantasy 16- the performance mode is so choppy it makes me feel ill! But I just way prefer higher frames, but stable. They probably could’ve achieved a more stable frame rate with a few graphical compromises, which I would’ve preferred. rebirths performance mode holds the 60fps really well, likely because it’s not using so much power to hold higher resolutions.

What changed my mind on it was that they're using these new elements to expand what the og laid out. And capitilize on certain things to basically end up on thr exact story beats the original had. Technically speaking nothing was cut from the og, only added upon. As well adding a new layer of surprise. Personally I'm really glad I shifted my perspective on it because as much as some of the new elements dont sit super well with me. When I’m playing these games that come out today, it still feels surreal to me. Even after playing 1000’s of hours. Like I’m always on borrowed time, pinch me and I wake up. I get that there’s scummy business tactics imvolved behind the scenes for sure. And I do not condone them. But I’m here to remind you Final fantasy Rebirth released with 2 discs. In an age they could’ve easily locked the game behind a digital update to save money, like they usually do. No, they gave you the full game, and a gorgeous, huge game at that. Man, have we become privileged also. We will sing the original FF7’s praises, we all say what a masterpiece Ocarina of time was etc. “For it’s time”. Bro even these games were somehow flawed for their time. OG ff7 was an ugly game even back then. But nobody cared because the game made you feel a certain way. But godforbid a fantastic game like Rebirth released today has some low resolution textures in the corner of a dark alley. “Those lazy developers”. “How dare they.” It’s human nature to always want what we don’t have. And it is natural for popular things to get the most criticism. But out of all the games to criticise and out of all the things you will complain in life, let me tell you: FF Rebirth should not be one of them. If it is. I feel bad for everyone around you. I agree with the principle that you don't have to have perfect 4K assets everywhere. I myself play in performance mode and I feel fine with the lower quality (graphics mode doesn't exactly improve it that much anyway).
There ARE, however, things in the graphics / visuals department that actually affect overall immersion and satisfaction. When LoDs pop in and out inconsistently, when shadows disappear and appear at random, when the brightness of the screen changes dramatically at the slightest movement of the camera - you do get distracted, and you break off from the immersion. For me it does negatively impact overall enjoyment.
Also I'm not sure Rebirth's development speed can be attributed to the fact that the game lacks asset quality. I think a much bigger factor is that it is a sequel so they didn't need to develop and test certain things which had already been proven in Remake / Intermission. In contrast, Remake itself WAS in quite the purgatory since being announced at E3 2015, even though it also didn't have the best asset quality.
In the end, I agree that a game should first be a good game before it is a good spectacle. However I also think that good visuals do contribute to how a game makes you feel. I'm hoping that the future has great things to offer - like UE5's Nanite might already be doing, and in the future things like AI generated interactive worlds - that will massively help lower development time, and focus game devs back on what they should always be doing - making games.

I Platinum almost every game I play and after the 50 hour mark on most games the boredom starts to set in but I don't want this game to end. The combat is so strong and every characters plays so different, I personally think they should just not bother with creating new combat systems per game and make this their new system. This can be the new turn based for me.

Story > Visuals when it comes to a single player RPG. Why do people still talk about the original FF7 so many years later? Because the story hooked them and didn't let go. Playstation visuals were crap. Especially compared to what is possible today. But the story is what truly captivates the imagination and what makes something truly special. Not what the textures look like. Or what the visuals show. That stuff can all be fixed later by modders. See the entirety of Bethesda's library of games for as many examples as you need. The only reason why people put as much time into Skyrim as they did was because of the prolific modding community. No. Give me a well done, compelling, memorable story every time.

I think this speed of development(and whatever they did to achieve it) was probably due to the FF7 team knowing that there would be title to title dropoff with the FF7R trilogy.
Some franchises are able to do direct sequels and grow(many western franchises in particular) but FF and many JRPGs heave historically seen noticeable declines for direct sequels.
FF7R being both direct sequels and nostalgia/remake(s)(of sorts) probably has audience cap and development has to take this into account to maximize profits.
Honestly, I am not sure if this project was the better option in terms of commercial success but they're definitely doing the best they possibly can here.
I will say that it's a bit of a shame that FF gets this type of critical reception not on FF7 Remake or FFXVI but on FF7 Rebirth. There's definitely less commercial upside to this scenario compared to the others.
But yeah, I do think that FF and Square Enix needs more of this in general, especially for their key franchise like Dragon Quest and FF. How are franchises supposed to grow and acquire new players if the time between mainline entries is so long?

You bring up some good points, but even though I'm a diehard FF fan, I can admit rebirth was FAR from perfect. And I take issue with you showing Horizon footage every time you're trying to call out games for focusing too much on visuals. Horizon had amazing combat/world building/music/voice acting/character animation in addition to stellar visuals.
There are plenty of studios out there that take blatant shortcuts and money grabs, taking advantage of their customers/fans, but I do not believe Guerrilla Games is one of them.

    • @Repaduski

Horizon does a lot right but their map design, character writing, amongst a host of other things are very weak still. And they clearly have no longterm plan for the narrative after the ending up forbidden west was insanely aimless. Gameplay can be great at times. But if you remove the visual achievement a lot of issues show their face.

I believe assets like fruit or clocks are just stuff you get for free using Unreal Engine (which so many triple A games are using). I don't think they put any real effort into them, it's just a matter of placement and setting up the "map" or area.

I think Rebirth keeping the same visual fidelity/art style was Remake definitely helped in the content department and kept a similar look between both games, something I hope they keep for what I guess will be called 'Reunion' for a more consistent look between all 3 games.
