i won't knock the supremes but i did love martha more than diana ross by far and then i was reminded martha sang "come and get these memories" which is perfect as a result of HER singing it. martha would have gotten the star treatement if i was barry gordy.
I think Motown used the groups differently. Supremes was used as like their royalty, so they had to come off like that. Vandellas were more of their group to connect to the public.
I"m also one of those dinosaurs who saw Supremes, Vandellas and Marvelettes live ~~~ and Martha Reeves and Wanda Rogers were far more powerful live singers than Diana Ross. I guess you had to be there. Diana was Berry Gordy's main gf. Why he picked her out of all those other far superior singers to make Ross the Queen Bee of Motown is a mystery. Diana was very dark skinned so it wasn't about "crossing over". Mary Wilson had fairer skin and was far more beautiful than toothpick Diana w the reedy voice. He was a business man. I do think his intentions were good; I do not think he set out to steal from his artists or to black ball them in the industry. He just got to a point where his own financial status became more important than the people making the money for him.
You could make the argument they wouldn't have been famous without motown but then again Motown wouldn't have been much without the artist either. by the 1960's though they should have learned from the broke artists of the 1950's that you never let anyone be in charge of your money.

Berry Gordy was horrible
He was a business man. I do think his intentions were good; I do not think he set out to steal from his artists or to black ball them in the industry. He just got to a point where his own financial status became more important than the people making the money for him.

You could make the argument they wouldn't have been famous without motown but then again Motown wouldn't have been much without the artist either. by the 1960's though they should have learned from the broke artists of the 1950's that you never let anyone be in charge of your money.
