Martha Reeves. So great and brings the 60 ' s back to me. Simply wonderful. Those songs will forever be in my dancing heart. I just loved the interview. Thank you.
I had no idea that there were so many Vandellas. That made life a lot easier for Martha as the act could still go on strong despite a Vandella taking off as they weren't known by name. Love Martha Reeves, a tremendous vocal talent and appears to be a very nice person. Great interview. Thanks for the post.
Martha is misleading when she said that there were hundreds of Vandellas. What Martha omitted during this interview is that during the years when Martha and the Vandellas were at their peak releasing hit after hit there was a consistent line-up of Vandellas Between 1964 and 1967 the line up was consistent. The 1964-1967 line-up consisted of Betty Kelly, Rosalind Ashford and Martha herself. This is the line up that everyone remembers. This is the line up representing the hit making years of the group. All of the video of TV shows filmed during this period show the Rosalind Ashford, Betty Kelly, and Martha line-up. All of the record sleave covers from this time show a Betty Kelly, Rosalind Ashford and Martha line-up. In fact, between 1962 and 1967 there was only one personnel change in the group.... when Annette Sterling had to leave because of pregnancy and was replaced by Betty Kelly in 1964. The hundreds of Vandellas that Martha refers to came after Martha had Betty Kelly and Rosalind Asford were fired in the late 1960's. After Betty Kelly and Rosalind Ashford were fired by Martha herself there were no more hits for Martha and the Vandellas. Martha then had to hire many different line ups of Vandellas to perform with her at revival oldies shows where she sings her 60's hits and that is when the hundreds of Vandellas came into play.
My goodness. This is news to me. Wonder what made her want to fire the two backup singers she had so much success with? The ones in the group during her most successful five year period? But when I think about it, egos in bands sometimes get too big. That may have been the problem. Bands are like families. Members often get into heated fights. Usually ego driven.
Lori Romano According to Martha's autobiography, Martha and Betty Kelley were having big problems with each other because of a shared boyfriend who played in the group's touring band. Martha writes that Betty started resenting her at every turn and Martha felt that they were one step away from violence. Betty did not leave peacefully as Betty continued to show up for peformances as an audience member just so she could heckle Martha from the audience and let the audience know that there was a fake Vandella taking her place. Soon after Martha fired Betty, Martha fired Rosalind because Rosalind starting taking direction from her boyfriend as far as stage performance was concerned and that was not going to be tolerated by Martha.
Why dont u be person enough to say who u are really talking about, instead of slipping & sliding, peeping & hiding. Go ahead & say who u are really talking about, Diana Ross. Apparently u do not like her, true she has done some dispicable things, like all of us, (maybe I need to rephrase that) like some of us, but then there are some who was borned perfect, live perfect & will die perfect, who have no need to forgive, since their lives are perfect. If u havent heard, Diana Ross has taken all her sins to Jesus, & He has washed her clean, & forgiven all her sins, & made her whole, & now she is an ordained minister, thanks to former band mate, Min. Cindy Birdsong. It wouldnt hurt u to go to Jesus & ask Him to turn ur life around, u would be amazed @ what life would be like w/o Satan. Stop serving Mary Wilson & her band of demons, all that is going to get u is a one way ticket to the "lake of fire" where u will burn forever more. Just a 411!
I love Martha Reeves she is a true legend, but maybe you need to do some research on Martha before you make those assumptions about her good soul and sweet spirit!! 1st of all, you know nothing about her soul and maybe not her spirit. Research and see what those so-call 100 other Vandellas she had singing with her have to say about everything, also how she got in the group in the first place(there are different accounts on that out there.) Commenters are saying that they find it very odd about that over 100 Vandellas comment she made . It wasn't Odd. It was just rude and arrogant. Call it what it was, because if those other Motown Divas you're speaking of had made that same comment you'll say she was just that! arrogant and rude!! A real B****!! Same thing to Ms Reeves!!
Martha seems like a very sensible, sweet, down-to-earth woman. It must've been a bitter pill to swallow when Berry made The Supremes his "girls" from 1964-1970. Six years is a long time to play second fiddle to another girl group on the same record label.
Yes and it got even worse for Martha and the Vandellas in 1969, I read in an article in the SOUL newspaper where Martha stated that Gladys Knight and the Pips were rising as the #2 female group (even though the Pips were men.) I remember feeling crushed when I read that in 1969.
Well, as Martha said, she got sidetracked doing drugs and probably wasn't paying attention to business, while Miss Ross worked her tail off with the Supremes.
@Gary Dodgson Ha and your living in Disneyland and Tinker Bell is the Queen of Soul. Velvettes One hit wonder Needle in a Haystack sing the Supremes off stage? The Vandellas had there Run before the Supremes Marvelettes had their Hits so yes it was time to focus on a group that didnt have any hits but hung in there. The Supremes record s just sold More and Crossover. Velvettes Ha! 4th on list of female groups at Motown
I do remember the Velvellettes for their two hits in Los Angeles back in the mid 60's. Especially Needle in a Haystack. They were sensational and their songs really played well on radio. I liked both the Supremes and the Velvellettes. Martha and the Vandellas got a lot of airplay as well. However, the Supremes grabbed the attention of the sophisticates as well which catapulted them to the next level. I remember the radio stations were playing cuts from Supremes albums like Supremes sing Rogers and Hart. I had never heard of Rogers and Hart and I became a fan of Rogers and Hart because of this album. I also liked the Supremes album of hits from England..A Bit of Liverpool and their Sam Cooke album. The Supremes just seemed more exciting with their sophisticated appeal and their ability to sing all sorts different songs. However that doesn't mean I wasn't rooting for the Velvellettes as well. I speculate one problem for the Velvellettes was their frequent personnel changes throughout their hit making days while the public got to know the three original Supremes quite well.
There is no music like good-old Motown music. Even disco music could not hold a candle to it. All the Motown artists were the best. I hope that none of the Vandellas are dead.
Good interview and fascinating history behind some of those mega hits that Martha Reeves and The Vandellas had. Like many others, I felt the comment on why the other members of the group didn't really get any recognition was pretty cold. But the way she quickly said she didn't feel bad about it makes me think there's definitely a deeper, not-so-nice, untold story, there. Martha is so elegant and positive, and still looks great! Admittedly, I thought she was much sexier with the gap between her teeth.
Motown has loads of great intros to their classic 45s but few come out the gate like the one on "Nowhere to Run". That is an intro that demands YOU LISTEN UP!
If you wanted to rock of course you didn't listen to the Supremes. You listened to the Supremes for smooth vocals, sophistication, glamour and wonderful melodies written by Holland Dozier and Holland.
Agreed that it sounds odd, especially since most of their top hits included the same two Vandellas. The Vandellas changed on the "Ridin' High" album with the Honey Chile single, arguably their last single of any consequence. Other than that comment, this interview comes across very warm-hearted.
I think it might be because back in the day (prior to the Beatles), it was all about "Girl Groups" with Motown. That's how they packaged the Artists. "The Supremes" "The Crystals" "The Shirelles" "Martha and the Vandellas" "Marvelettes." Once the Beatles came on the scene, it started to become more about the "Boy bands."
I agree. It is an odd thing for Martha to say since she had the same line-up of Vandellas all through the hit making years of Martha and the Vandellas. The most famous line up of Vandellas existed from 1964 to 1967 consisting of Betty Kelly, Rosalind Ashford and Martha herself. Apparently Betty Kelly and Rosalind Ashford were not interchangeable because after Martha herself had Betty Kelly and Rosalind Ashford fired in the late 1960's there were no more hits for Martha and the Vandellas..ever again. The hundreds of Vandellas that Martha refers to were Vandellas that she recruited to sing with her at oldies revival shows long after the hit making years of Martha and Vandellas were over.
Michael B she made that statement because in the beginning Berry Gordy wanted her to be a solo artist but she did not want to perform alone so she basically got the Vandellas to come along as company
Marvin Gaye told his biographer, Martin Ritz, when The Supremes hit big, "it was if Berry was playing the slot machines in Vegas, and three cherries came up ten times in a row. We all felt his attention turn." That's one factor. "Honey Chile" in late 1967 was the last significant Vandellas record to chart, but it was also the year Berry was preoccupied with jettisoning Florence Ballard from The Supremes, and most significantly, Holland-Dozier-Holland's deliberate work-slowdown and walk out. Without them, the Four Tops struggled for further hits, and the Vandellas never recovered. Then too, author Nelson George remarks that after the summer of 1964, "Martha's relationship with Berry and his sisters deteriorated as she complained about this and that, often with a seeming irreverence that enraged Berry. Martha's previous show business experience had made her more demanding, and less accepting of Motown's paternalistic attitude toward its artists." George quotes Martha herself, "I think I was the first to ask where the money was going. Berry took his personal time to tell me 'You can't run my record company,' and I answered, 'No, and you can't either,' and then he really got mad at me."

I loved this lady as much as I loved Diana. Martha continues to tour. The voice has gone. Painful and sad to hear. Martha, stop singing. Let's all celebrate the voice and talent of Martha Reeves in her prime.
That was a shady and low-down comment about the Vandellas. She completely disregarded Roz, Betty, Annette, and even her own sister Lois. Martha never had any success as a solo artist. The songs she still sings to this day are from her hit-making days with Roz, Betty and Annette. Martha could have acknowledged these ladies for their contributions to her success and their contribution to music history.
I agree completely. She should have recognized Betty Kelly as well who replaced Annette and sang with Martha from 1964 to 1967, their peak hit making years. In fact, Martha and the Vandellas had the same line up between 1964 through 1967 consisting of Rosalind Ashford, Betty Kelly and Martha herself. What is Martha's problem with giving recognition to these ladies?
No Thanks. You keep Martha her yoddling non singing ass Martha. You apparently aint heard Martha lately compared to Diana LOL l trade you 50 Martha's and a cat for a strand from Diana weave or Diana hair brush LOL
Charles Jeffery Right. And anyone saying she still sounds good is as delusional as Martha. That was a shady and low-down comment about the Vandellas. She completely disregarded Roz, Betty, Annette, and even her own sister Lois. Martha never had any success as a solo artist. The songs she still sings to this day are from her hit-making days with Roz, Betty and Annette. @@jackanthony976 So did the Rolling Stones. Performing has been her LIFE. Audiences go to see these old acts because they are nostalgic for a past that seemed simpler and more sane. They don't expect perfect vocals from oldies acts. It's easy for us non-performers to just say "Give it up! You stink now!" but harder for the performers to do so. Why do you think bands like A Flock of Seagulls or Berlin are still performing despite only having had a few big hits? If you don't want to see her don't buy a ticket.
Don't be evah be mistaken, Martha Reeves is music royalty at its finest, thank you Martha !

Super memories Thank you❤️
My fav Vandella? Sandra Tilley...what a cutie. RIP.
