I have always been a fan of Martha Reeves since I was a little kid! She is truly a great legend, along with Aretha!:)
Martha Reeves seems very humble. Beautiful smile. Just listening to her talk just has me sitting here smiling. You have ro have much respect for the generations that came before us. They dealt with a lot so the world could be a little bit better for the rest of us.

Ms Powell was a beautiful person. I loved that old lady 💙. And Marth Reeves took VERY good care of Ms Powell in her last years. Almost every time I saw Martha Reeves, she had Ms Powell with her. Ms Powell would even hang out at Baker's and Bert's. She was still Detroit Royalty generations after Motown left Detroit.

Thank you, Martha Reeves for sharing your kind, loving and insightful words about Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. What a legacy. But, I would be remiss to not mention yours and the Vandellas musical legacy. I remember yoh were the first woman and girl group to close a Shia at Philadelphia’s Uptown Theater and you and you’d group closed the show with Heat Wave. (Your music was great!)
Over the years, I have heard you speak snd you have never disappointed. I thank you for sharing and for mentioning even the story about Smokey Robinson “stepping up”. Stay safe, strong and blessed. You talk about “stealing the show”. You ain’t never lied.

People of color that were TALENTED and SOPHISTICATED went through a lot back in the 50's & 60's. I love the Motown sound and Aretha Franklin ♥ ❤ !!!
I read how difficult it was to perform as TALENTED Artists of color. My late parents & relatives told me how difficult it was for people of color to perform in certain parts of the United States & cities.
Martha, a kind spirit, she is a wonderful woman, and I'm proud to call her friend.
I think the reason Martha Reeves, Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin and most of the people of that time represent the golden era of music is because being a performer required so much training. You couldn’t go out on a stage until you were physically, mentally and emotionally equipped to do so.
Nowadays, the moment you can sing a note, they put you before an audience of thousands.
Her training liberally never left her. She has maintained the professionalism and regal nature. But then again most artist from that era have.
So articulate, So classy.
Now that Mary Wilson has died, I'd say that Martha is the best resource for keeping the Motown legacy alive. Mary and Martha for many years were the most articulate and most vocal about the history of the music. Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson speak fondly of Motown, but they have had such huge solo careers, their recollections of the early years are more general. Mary was, and now only Martha is, the go-to person for the detailed stories. She is a very lovely woman and she messages as very intelligent.

@@LBuford216 I'll have to look up clips with her. I haven't seen any. Maybe Wanda Rogers, too? I really like the Marvelettes in general. I'd like to know more about their story. I did a comparison and I was surprised to find that they had more hits than the Vandellas.
@@nycp1969 now Wanda is gone. And Wanda didn't give much interviews and was out of the spotlight due to drug/alcohol addictions, health decline and death of her daughter.

Martha is objection in her personal recollections of Motown than some.. In a separate interview she praised Diana Ross as the hardest working person in show buisness. Martha is a very gracious lady and she speaks without rancour. Johnx

Love marth and the vandellas great sound and when they came out with dancin in the streets she was hot and a good looker also im 66 year young white dude still a drummer and vocalist makin music go motown the best music ever and always
when you think of Mrs Reeves, you go to all the songs that got her and the Vandellas, inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame...a huge accomplishment for a group of black women, with there NOT being many black women AT ALL in the HOF. But her singing ability also gets dismissed, on occasion. So, Id encourage anyone who admires her, to search her version of "So Many Rivers To Cross"... an old Jimmy Cliff song. Her version will bring tears to your eyes. Its THAT good.

Back in the day I would’ve NEVER performed for a segregated crowd. They wanted our talent and entertainment but we couldn’t even sleep in their same hotels, eat in the same restaurants, hell even use the same rest room where we performed.
The Native Americans say walk a mile in my moccasins before you criticize me. Some of those very talented entertainers had not had an opportunity to even finish elementary school. So being given the opportunity to earn more money than one could imagine, with no other marketable skills, is a pretty tempting offer. Blessings to you young lady.

My mother was regal as all Black mothers back in the day wether we had money or not .But our our mothers never stepped out of the house ,whether it be going to the market or church .They always looked classy .I loved that about my mother ,she was smart and sophisticated .That is what I loved about my mother .

I wonder why interviewers are always asking her about other people. They need to focus on HER and HER career, stop using her as a way to gain insight knowledge.
When was this interview actually recorded? It was uploaded in 2019, but judging from what Martha says during the interview, it was recorded while Aretha was still living (and she died in August 2018).
It shows at the beginning 2013....

The Freedom Riders were the first to be physically and verbally abused. Motown experienced it later.

So sorry Miss Reeves had to undergo such a terrifying experience and hateful prejudice in those early days, and actually saw someone pull a double-barreled shotgun on them all. They had some really tough times in those early 60’s days, just trying to get their music to people that wanted to see them and hear that popular Motown sound. (I would have given almost anything to have seen those big names at that time!) Imagine having to ride a broken-down old Trailways bus with no toilets, for hundreds of miles.
I gave this a positive “like” because Martha Reeves is a tremendous talent, a beautiful person and Motown royalty, but this interviewer was really terrible and unprepared. He was disorganized and didn’t know what he was going to say. He used the fillers “you know?”, “right”, “ummm” “aaah” and “Wow!” repeatedly. Obviously, he did not know what he was going to say, which is unfortunate for her as such a big star.
Fortunately Miss Reeves is a class act and a professional, and can run with a semi-interesting or even boring lead, and she was able to salvage his poorly prepared questions and make it interesting. I truly felt bad and uncomfortable for her, as she had to do some quick thinking for his awkward line of questioning, but she is a seasoned professional, and she was able to make it through unscathed and looked good. She always has been one of the Motown greats. Barry Gordy picked a true winner with her.
She has more authority to speak of god than the pope himself.
