Pro tip: Make your “kitchen day” on the day other family members are supposed to cook dinner! I used to do this with my kids. When my kids were teens they both got heavily into learning to cook. ( I was so proud) I would take those days when they were to cook dinner and spend the day baking or canning/preserving, prepping other meals. That way by dinner time I could sit down and relax while they cooked the evening meal. Worked out great!

Samesies, except mine for me it was a late diagnosis as an adult and suddenly so many struggles made sense. I am at a season in life where I have the most demands on me that I have ever had and medication has been a HUGE difference. I still clean like I'm in a "If you give a mouse a cookie" book.... but I am more emotionally regulated and that allows me the opportunity to build and practice healthy coping skills.
You are so not alone in all this.

🐛 Jess....just in case you ever want/need this, I have a 100% effective way to get rid of hornworms that I've used for the past 50 years gardening. It's not for the squeemish, but it works every time.
    1) Gather as many hornworms into a jar as you can find (5 or more is good)
    2) Squish them up (the 🤢 part)
    3) Let the carcasses rot for 3 days
    4) Add the rotted carcasses to a gallon of water and spray all over the plants.
This will repel all further hornworms, but doesn't smell awful (except to the hornworms, evidently) nor is it harmful to anyone or anything. 🙂 I just love your videos! Even this old fart learns something in every one. Thank you!

    • @MissChievousRN
      @MissChievousRN Год назад

I don't (knock wood) get hornworms..... at least not that I've seen yet. But I DID see a hawk moth the other day and made a homeschool moment out of it for my little one.... I've only seen 3 of these moths in my whole life and they are super cool. Imagine my horror when we looked him up and turns out to be the Dreaded Hornworm, bane of Tomato Mothers everywhere!! Breaks my heart to think this beautiful moth must be DESTROYED😢
I usually plant basil around my tomatoes and I've heard that keeps them away also. I'm in 5b midwest and I don't think they are as prevalent here.

Hi Jess, I'm a gluten free sourdough maker & I've found the most productive flour to make a GF sourdough starter is buckwheat flour or a mix of brown rice & buckwheat (I'm sure you already know buckwheat is GF so no worries in using it), it gives me a much stronger ferment & a quicker one from scratch as well. Hope that's helpful. Oh & I usually add some kefir or whey to my starters, it's amazing at kicking them off & into high gear. Best of luck with the GF sourdough bread making, from Australia.

I have to share something funny but a little personal. I sleep with the TV on and I usually just hit the Play All button on your RUclips channel and snooze away. The other night I woke up because nature called and I did a double take when I saw you out in a watery rice field. Well, I thought it was you but YT had switched to a different garden channel for some reason. For a moment I thought you were reeeeaaally branching out with your crops. Hopefully my weird sleep habits help your channel (and the rice growers). 😂

And sometimes experimenting makes some of your favorite recipes! I made a loaf of bread once and used butter instead of olive oil like I usually do and it made biscuit bread and it was such a hit it was gone by the end of the day.

When you were cutting tomatoes and switched to a sharper knife I felt my usual and dramatic urge/need to sharpen that discarded knife--I don't know why it's a thing exactly but it is. Must sharpen! Must sharpen! lol!
Some people want to test the sharpness of a freshly sharpened knife by cutting paper or shaving hair from their arm, but for me the real test is slicing a ripe tomato. Slicing a really ripe slicing tomato without dimpling the skin and with hardly any juice escaping just makes my heart all twitterpated.

Today I have a storm prep day.. crazy weather we’ve had here in Maine.. we have a hurricane watch.. which will be a tropical storm by the time it arrives here. I have about 3 dozen lovely, lush and healthy tomato plants.. laden with fruit that has just barely started to ripen. I’ve had a couple handfuls of cherries so far.. but pounds and pounds of unripe slicers and heirlooms that are heavy and green. My plan for tomorrow, so long as we don’t loose power is to make kale chips, dilly beans and bread!

I have made carrot kvass as well. If have had fire cider with local honey peppers onions and garlic and I’ve seen a “squished” tomato ferment from the UK and will be trying a blended tomato with vegetable and peppers kvass, because I love savory and spicy. With so many of us adults having leaky gut and microbiome issues a brew for the adult palette is a gateway option for those who do not yoghurt but love Clamato and hops ferments or chilled spicy v8.

Oh, you have the dreaded leaf footed bug. They took out my tomatoes and blacked peas, along with the extreme heat. However, your garden looks so much better than mine.

In the adhd world, we call having someone with us so we can stay on task a body double. If my daughters and I are really struggling, we will call and ask them to come be our body double. Sometimes, even just a long video call is enough. ❤️

That fermented salad looks good. I tend to ferment green tomatoes, onions, and garlic at the end of the season. My tomatoes end up with lots of green ones left because of our season. I think just making up things is interesting.
A favorite dish of mine is what we call Hobo - because I just chop up whatever I have available (like Carrots, potatoes, Onions, garlic, Cabbage, squash, turnip, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, etc along with sausage, toss with a little olive oil, some butter, and parsley and bake or put on the grill.

Just yesterday, I was beating myself up about not filming more of my canning/kitchen projects for RUclips. This video made me feel so understood. I am the same way in the kitchen, all over the place. I can barely keep track of my recipe, let alone my camera angles. Thanks for taking a moment to share and for making me feel less alone in this particular aspect of ADHD, Jess! 💚

Film it anyway. If not for the public, then for your family to learn from and remember you.

I want to tell you we have been trying all summer to grow Kajari melons. At the beginning of spring, we added two new raised gardens and a cattle panel for them. Nothing all summer! Our son kept encouraging us to keep trying. Finally, today we have a Kajari melon 5" long and about 5" wide! So glad I didn't give up!

Fermenting intimidates me. I need to just try it already. I love saurkraut and I love kimchi. I need to break out my comfort zone when it comes to fermenting foods myself. ❤

It's so easy!! Kimchi and kraut are great starters. Just keep them submerged, and wait. That's it.
