- Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. That was hilarious “it’s makes her think she’s a real homesteader” gotta love kids 🥰🤣🤣
The turkey looks amazing!!!!
I’ll go wash my hands. Bless his heart!!! I love the stuffing “the bird” 🤩
Kitchen days always exhaust me too!!!! God bless you Jess. Thanks for being a friend from a far!!!! ❤️❤️
Love it
Ben is so grown up these days. Seems like just yesterday he was toddling around the garden, now he's a better chef than most adults😂❤
“Guess what happened y’all,”. I love it-Benjamin’s become a real South Carolinian! He talks just like us 😉😊
I thought the same thing 😅
This brings back so many memories for me. I was Ben's age when my mom first had me start cooking with her in the kitchen. It started with brown sugar oatmeal and cinnamon toast and graduated to pancakes and biscuits, etc. It sparked my love of baking. I lost my mom when I was 21 in 2002, and I so cherish that she taught me cooking and baking. As I got older, I was put in charge of the pie making for Thanksgiving. And the year she passed right before Christmas, my sister and I got to cook one last Thanksgiving meal for her. I am so thankful we had the chance to do that for her since she had been sick nearly the whole year that year. Thank you for this beautiful video, I just know that one day, Ben will remember these sweet times. ❤
By the way, my mother, who was the generation where she did everything all the house work, all the cooking all the grocery shopping and worked physical hard labor, low-paying jobs, full-time at the same time. But trust me, my dad was working incredibly hard jobs too, but at that point, he didn’t know how to do any of the household stuff. So I learned very very young and I loved it, not the cleaning so much lol. But my mom had the patience to teach me to cook along beside her. Plus sewing, embroidering, knitting, and crocheting. My mother was a great cook and she could make something out of nothing and stretch food really well. None of my four older siblings never ever wanted to learn any of it!!! My sister never ever cooked. Her two husbands had to do all the cooking lol. But I loved it. I was in the kitchen since I was six by age 8 I could cook from scratch without any help. But I loved it and I loved the time with my mother and I’m 61 now and those are my best memories. And I my entire life have been known for my cooking. I paid for my children’s dental care and braces by selling my tamales. It had to be some thing I could do in the home. And with having five kids in seven years and not being allowed to work outside the home, which all I wanted to be ever was a mother and a wife. But because of my circumstances with one very moderate income, I had to be a very, very, very careful and precise, grocery shopper. Which I always went grocery shopping with my mama and knew very well how to pinch pennies. And I knew how to make something out of nothing. When other people would walk in to the kitchen and say I have nothing to make us to eat. I could walk in there and create a great meal. Thanks to my mom. And I just had an instinct for it all that she nurtured. In fact, my family said I did some of my best cooking when we were out of groceries and I had to improvise and be really creative. So I love what you do with your kids. I know that in past videos we seen your oldest two boys in the kitchen. And I love watching this video with you and Ben cooking together. You gave me a beautiful gift this morning. Thank you❣️😘🥰🌻.
Our daughter had one of the turkeys we processed last year in her freezer. She brought it down to me last weekend and said, "Mom, we want Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday" So we did the whole nine yards Thanksgiving dinner.
Good job, Ben! I have 2 grown sons who help cook for their family and they started just like you. I bet that was a delicious early Thanksgiving dinner with extra special stuffing.
Here’s a cornbread recipe you might try which can be gluten free without special flour. It’s my father’s recipe from south Louisiana. 2 cups cornmeal, 2 tablespoons flour (but you don’t have to use that), 2 tablespoons sugar (don’t use this when making stuffing), 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 large eggs, 2 cups buttermilk (kefir can be substituted). Preheat oven with 10” cast iron skillet inside to 425 degrees. Mix dry ingredients then add slightly beaten eggs and buttermilk. When skillet is very, very hot, grease skillet (I use bacon grease) and pour in batter. It should sizzle when it hits the pan. Bake about 25 minutes until done and immediately turn out upside down to have crispy bottom. This is moist on inside and crispy on outside.
I used to avoid aprons. Now I love them.
I was diagnosed with ADHD young and the trick with wearing aprons to keep you focused and on task is 100% valid and works. It is a physical way to connect you to the task at hand. I try to find a way to click my brain into any task to stay focused. I have specific sewing aprons as well.
It's in the blood! RUclips star in the making, Ben has such an ease on camera and is thoughtful of the things that his audience should know. 👍👍💚💚
“They’ll list in the order that you need them” - learning moment for me, how am I a grown up who never realized that?? Thank you Jess and Ben!
I know Asher was wearing a robe, but my brain imagined it as a jacket with stuff shoulders and a pressed lapel. And it matched his hair... very snazzy. 👌
🎉🎉🎉 Oh oh! I see a @thedelightfulcottage Apron! I love seeing my creations on other homesteads! 👍🐓🐓 It looks awesome Ben! I agree everyone needs an apron!
Our dancing around in aprons. Lololol. Amazing Delightful
Blessings everyone everywhere
Ben is just so cute cooking with you Jess! Watching him stuffing the turkey was hilarious! And he cleans up his messes, Cool 😎
I absolutely love the rain. Coming from Southern California now in Eastern Kentucky. I appreciate the rain so much and the relaxation it does for me ❤❤❤
Ya, not only did you do all that stuff but you had the mind to film it & share with us too. That’s one productive day you real homesteader you! 😁
I love seeing that your boys are so sweet, and kind hearted!
I see God's hand in your lives and He shines through you and your family! 💚
Thank you for sharing your life!
Wow. Slow down, Jess, you're going to run into yourself, going around the corner. Blessings everyone everywhere
Ben is such a delight. Your way of letting the kids do most of the work really can build confidence !
Having kids cooking is mostly a math class! Good work mama!
Ben Ben Ben it has been a pleasure watching you grow. You are a true blessing to your family. ❤
This was an exceptionally enjoyable video to watch!
The look on his face when he tossed that spoonful was priceless! This was such fun!
I am sitting on the couch next to my 11yo and newborn. And I told my oldest, "I'm so unmotivated today. But, I have 100 pounds of apples, 40 pounds of peaches and 40 pounds of Pears to get processed... I can't be unmotivated." Well, let's watch this one video from Jess. We are cracking up. I'm going to change out of my pj's and put on my apron. Thanks for the reminder. It's exactly what I needed today.
🤣 “I am we both use alll the sauce, we both like to garden”
He’s so proud❤️ how adorable
Ben’s stories about Lily … so awesome!
Ben is adorable. I love his way of explaining things. He is a joy.
I’ve loved this one! Ben is so animated and great on video.
I get everything out and then put it away as soon as I’ve added it, so no doubles on things like baking powder. 😊
Mise en Place, is the first lesson learned in culinary school, it’s French for “ everything in its place” so Ben is spot on with gathering everything he needs before making his recipe 😊
Ben is such a beautiful soul! And Asher's blue hair is stunning :)
And i wanted to mention how absolutely adorable you look today!much love to you all 🥰❤😍💞😘
The face he made when he flipped the salt. Priceless. :D
I always enjoy watching Ben being in the garden with you. Love him just as much in the kitchen!!
I love getting the kids in the kitchen! We have 6 older boys and then 2 toddler princesses. My 12 year old boy is the first in the kitchen helping. He loves cooking and baking! I love seeing kids being hands on!
Every time I see a video with Ben, I think how much he and my Caleb sound alike, the way they talk and their facial expressions, I swear they could be twins. ❤ I just love these videos. They warm my heart.
I'm with Miah... Thanksgiving dinner is the best meal of the year!
I always had my kids in the kitchen with me… now I have 3 teenagers and they have their own interests, but my 2 boys want to be chefs so I hope I did something right ❤
Mise en place. Having everything measured out and ready before you start cooking 🙂Love watching Ben baking.
Oh..I just love Ben ❤️ always so eager to help mama. So sweet
Well I was hoping to see the cooked turkey 🦃! Blessings 💕🤗 Great job Ben!👏👏👏
Omgosh, Jess! Best Vlog ever!!! Hoping Cooking with Ben becomes a regular feature!
I required my 4 kids to be able to cook Thanksgiving dinner by the time they moved out. That way I knew they could cook for themselves. So seeing you and Ben cooking Thanksgiving dinner made me smile. I told my youngest daughter that she needed to give me a Ben some day. Love your boy!
Love your family
Hey Ben, I love seeing you in the kitchen! You're doing an excellent job. Greetings from the Netherlands
thanksgiving training, it is very important.
Ben 🫂❤ Fantastic job stuffing that huge bird. ✅️
Thank you for showing teaching Ben and for also showing your exhaustion at the end. So often when you watch a video in the kitchen it's easy to compare my energy level to someone's. I try not to but it can be disheartening to long for the energy of other homesteaders. I have some thyroid issues right now and it's motivational to see that I'm not alone and it's ok to get exhausted after being in the kitchen all day. Does that make sense? Brain fog comes with this hypothroid junk.
Awe Ben is so cute and really funny!! Turkey dinner is one of my favorites!!! I wanted to see the end results of the dinner😂
My mil used the washing machine to help her get on task. Her washing machine was in her kitchen and she always said she liked it there because when it was working she got working too!🙂
I just love this kid! Ben, you are too much!❤❤❤
Blessings ❤
Love the Elephant Ears!!!
Ben is the star of the show, just adorable, he is going to be a great chef.
I have watched your vlogs for quite a while now...took the 'Growing Gardener's' course in the beginning. I see what you are doing, sharing your sphere of influence with other You tubers/businesses & I think that is so gracious and loving. You go girl...continue making the world a better place.
Awesome video: about a year or two ago, you said you taught your kiddos to lay their hand on your shoulder if they needed to interrupt or interject. At 14:10ish in the video I saw Ben do that again. What a cool thing to teach a someone.
Great video Ben is so precious.
Ahh the start of the video brought back memories of your old homestead and all the shots of your garden from your window.
Waiting for the garden boy to have his own channel. Love our Ben❤❤❤
Ben in the kitchen with you is so precious. I find it interesting that as a southerner, you are making stuffing instead of dressing, but everything sounds delicious!
From the mouth of babes ! I love Ben's comments . Ben is such a good cook ! Jess, you are a good mother and teacher . I can see that Ben loves to learn how to cook .
I love apron's too I like the idea of a super hero cape
His heart! ❤
Love everything about this. Like many of your viewers, I'd happily watch any video you make. But I love it when the kids are helping with home life and learning. Very soothing taking a peek into your daily life. Thanks for sharing all that you do, Jess ❤
Ben has such a great camera presence. And Asher’s hair is sooo dang cool.
❤ I just love Ben's spirit. Hi Jess! ❤
A pizza cutter?! Genius! What a cool mom hack.
Jess, I try not to be partial but Ben is such a charmer. ❤ I used to love to watch him run w the goats
I think Ben (and the other kids?) should have a mini cooking/gardening/homesteading skills series.... It's such a precious stage when your kids are big enough to really learn how to do things with mom/dad but also still WANT to do them with you. I would love to see more of these types of videos with any of your kiddos that still want to do them. It is not only endearing to watch but also can help other parents to get ideas on how to teach basic skills with their own kiddos. Maybe a side series idea for both channels....and the kids can start earning some side money from any revenue from the videos they take center stage in? Just an idea. You & Miah are amazing parents and have awesome kiddos!
So nice to see Ben! He is soooo precious!
You need to cook like you have no temp regulation knob. Yes. Thank me profusely. Blessings everyone everywhere
Your Benjamin is a keeper! What a dang doll he is. He’s is mama’s boy, for sure. Out of 3, I’ve got one too.
You are so lucky Mama.
My 3 yr old grand boy is just starting to help me in the kitchen. 🌺
Love Ben! He is so sweet. He will be your farmer/cook I think of all your kids.
I love Benjamin. He is an awesome kiddo.
Informative and heart-warming! ♡
Somebody, haha. How lovely. And it is a thanksgiving weekend of sorts. The turkeys are in the freezer, the gamecocks lost to the Bulldogs and fall weather is rolling in. Thanks very much!
Oh the garden video can wait. What's better than cooking with Ben?
Aww your son has your contagious smile!
This is probably one of my favorite videos you have ever made. I love seeing the dynamic that you have with Ben. I hope he stays interested and comfortable with being on camera because we love to see him! You doing the superman shirt tear had me laughing so hard! As always, thanks for sharing with us!
Love seeing Ben cooking in the kitchen with you!
My 10 yr old daughter Kendra has really enjoyed making and decorating cakes for a while. For the last one I was completely hands off while she baked the cake! :)
That was a delightful day! Thank you and Bless You!❤❤
I really enjoyed watching you and Ben in the kitchen cooking together. My boys are all grown and gone, and I remember cooking with them as one of my fondest memories. PS, they both turned out to be good cooks! Ha ha ha.
I totally understand what you’re saying about your apron. When I know I need to do things around the house I put on my apron. I also wear mine as an honor to my Grammy. My fondest memories of her when I was young are when she would come out of the kitchen when we got to her house wiping her hands on her apron.
Ben is absolutely adorable!
Your little Ben is SO funny and such a cutie!! The real homesteader comment killed me 😂😂
Love Asher’s hair! Thanks for the video, Jess, made for perfect bedtime viewing in an autumnal London
This video was just perfect!
I miss when my boy was like this. He really wanted to be with me a lot & he grew up and also wanted to be more like my husband (I have to say today, his biological father) and he branched out to learn other things too. I just miss those days. He was so sweet. He's 23 now and actually appreciates the lessons I taught him. He also appreciates the lessons from my husband. I just miss those simple, chatty (don't let anyone tell you that boys aren't chatty 😂)moments.
Very enjoyable!
Today is my youngest boys birthday. He turned 14 and it's bittersweet. Watching today's video brought back so many happy memories of him helping me in the kitchen over the years. What a blessing and I deeply thank you and Ben for sharing this time with us.❤
My youngest just turned 14 in August! I now have “kids” that are 18,16, and 14 🥹it’s bittersweet ❤
Today was my oldest son's birthday. He is 46.
What an adorable child!
I put on my running shoes for the same reason.
Those elephant ears are amazing! I love Thanksgiving dinner anytime of year!
Right on! Good job Ben. That kid cracks me up...especially the real homesteader comment!
This was a lovely time spent in the kitchen with Ben! I am much like Miah in the kitchen, as I try to get all the ingredients out first, but I also tend to kind of be all over the place until I can "lock in" what I'm doing. Very interested to see how the cream does in the freeze dryer, as I had thought it wasn't recommended due to the fat level. Whether it's an experiment or a tried-and-true thing you do, I love to learn!
He could not be a cuter Boy, I just love him. Might be time for his own youtube channel.
i love that you are so relaxed on cooking
This is the most ADORABLE cooking video I've ever seen! Please, more of this. 😂❤
Oh, it's been a while since I had a real "kitchen" day. I'm looking forward to it as soon as I can. I think I'll put on this video so Ben can come along, and I'll feel like a real homesteader!
Ben may be a budding chef! My son and I used to flip through cookbooks together. Y’all giving me some beautiful memories ❤ 🥲
This was so fun!! Love seeing you in the kitchen with your kids. Ben is growing up so fast. Remember when he was little and looking at his chips. Blessings from Kentucky.
