Ya’ll need to get in the habit of laying the seed pack on the ground where you just sowed and snap a pic! That way you have the name and the date they were sown without a tag. I move all my “seed” pics into a folder for easier access. Works great!

I love just throwing seeds in randomly. It's almost like Christmas when their ready to harvest, and I don't mind playing the guessing game.
The Mexican sage is in the salvia family and the salvia family is very easy to propagate, take cuttings with the flowers and bottom leaves cut off and put the bottom in damp soil and it should take root pretty quick.
The Roses of Fall are practically world-famous.

Carpet of Snow Alyssum,, or White Knight, is the common white. Sweet William is a type of dianthus.

Mexican bush sage grows like crazy here in Central TX. It will come back every year and if you throw it in the bonfire (just break off the stems after it freezes), it smells amazing and keeps bugs away... which is only a southern problem, bugs after a freeze. 🤷♀️

Here in the warmer inland valleys of Southern Cal, it grows wonderfully, and I just cut it back to about 8 inches tall at the end of the season, and it comes back beautifully the next Spring. I love the rich velvet flowers, and so do the bees.
Could you experiment with leaving the fans on? They sound a lot louder to you than to us because the mic is directional and picks up close sounds preferably. When you went in the fans were on and we heard you just fine. If you can reduce your suffering and the plants suffering and we still get a good product from you, that's a win win win:)

You mentioned dill, and it reminded me of something hilarious that I have not shared with you yet. My neighbors and I have a approximately 20x60 foot section of just Golden Rod, ragweed, a few small pine trees between our properties. I spilled a package of dill seeds back in the spring, and that section of land between our homes is nothing but a dill forest. I go outside, and if there is a breeze, you can smell it! And the dill, it’s just a waving in the breeze. It is so funny!

Dill pollen can be collected and used as a spice, most commonly you’ll see fennel pollen treated this way but dill works too
Maybe get lots of swallowtails??

I plant dill seed from seasoning bottle, but no sprouts. Maybe they will grow after Winter. Grand Blessings everyone everywhere.
I would adore that. We need full for pickles and fish and egg salad. I cannot get my dill to grow.

I grow lemongrass as well for ornamental shrubbery but cut it and use it for mulch. It doesn’t drop a seed but protects the soil wonderfully! It slides in between rows and can wrap it around a base of a plant well ♥️ plus it keeps protecting from those pesky mosquitoes

You can rig up shade cloth over certain areas with two clothes lines. Just put tablecloth or junk sheet from one line to next line beside it.

I'm going to miss having a fall garden this year. We are trying to buy a new mobile home & will have to move all my raised beds😢 but next year we should have our old age home in place then I can design new gardens😊
I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of you talking about the garden, I haven’t planted my fall garden yet. I’ve been dealing with 3 sick kids but I’m going to make myself get out there tomorrow and at least sow a few seeds.
Just got back from a trip to Vermont with my niece, sister, and friends from my sister’s senior center. It was beautiful. I wore a different R&R shirt each day. My niece is in love with the cowculus shirt. Definitely going to get her one when the next round of ordering takes place if it is available. My garden has rebounded, too. Just picked my first tomato in over a month. Lots and lots of flowers. I haven’t had the heart to pull up the tomatoes and know that there is no way they are going to get big enough before frost, but the pollinators appreciate them. ❤
I just put a bunch of seeds between sprouts this morning. I can't stop LOL. I love seeds, I love soil. I found a volunteer tomato plant behind my pole beans. It made me so extremely happy lol. Sow Sow Sow!!
Oh Jess, I wanted to stop you from biting into the Wasabi radish! You are a adventurous eater!...You gave me an idea to plant root veggies in the bed the tomatoes are in grown under a trellis of beans. That shade will help protect the beets as they sprout. Still warm here, 90 and high 80's.

❤ It's so nice that your climate allows you to grow cold hearty vegetables in the winter there! Love that! Up here, it not only gets super cold, but then it gets warm enough to thaw and freeze repeatedly, which takes out a lot of our cold hearty veg. Our list is a lot smaller to grow from, but still worthwhile. Since our gardens were poisoned, I've still been getting quite a bit of veggies from our container gardens that are close to the house, enough to make several meals or add to meals. In the meantime, I will enjoy your lovely gardens. ❤❤
Try roasted beet hummus. Just make regular hummus and split the batch in half. Leave half in the food processor and add a couple of roasted beets. The flavor is so rich. Kids love the pink color and everyone who has tried mine seems to love it. To roast the beets I just scrub them, wrap lightly in foil, cook at 400 for about 40 minutes. Let cool, smooth off skin, and eat, use in hummus, or save for other yummy meal additions.
Thank you for he walk around the garden! 😊 I was chopping peppers for freezer storage while watching because they seem to be unyielding to the autumn weather.

Traveling today with an 8 hr drive.. This is a pleasant half way point to enjoy! I'm grateful to have some of my last harvest of greens with me!
I will be traveling another 15 hrs tomorrow & Friday to my Photography Retreat destination to capture the Colorado Rockies Fall Colors among a beautiful Ranch setting among gorgeous horses, Cattle & wildlife!

I made green enchilada sauce from my 5 gallon bucket of green cherry tomatoes and I've used that stuff so much over the year. It's really great in green chili as well!

I try not to be a jealous person but I’m sure envious of having 🎉a fall/winter garden! Being in northern Michigan, yeah. No winter gardens for us.
Sweet William (dianthus) is a flower completely different from Alyssum. Alyssum is often referred to as “Sweet Alyssum” or botanically as Lobularia.
We use beet leaf tops for our rolls instead of cabbage! So delicious.
You call it a hodge podge garden, but in reality is following natures example and to some extent, life's example. No where do things happen perfectly, they are always littered with little bits of other stuff - keeps it interesting. Good video!

Too late to direct sow much other than greens here, but did broadcast a big mix of all of my surplus saved seeds from the last few years. I've got all kinds of stuff popping up and it makes me happy. 😁
Going to share this video with my mum. She doesn't think her allotment is a success because it is a glorious wild abundant messy hodge podge (surrounded by other allotments - straight row upon row of giant leeks)
BUT she and our family eats from the allotment year round, even if sometimes it's "only" salad leaves and herbs. To my mind, that's the whole point and she is a very successful gardener!
Aside from plants for a future are there other reliable resources for medicinal herbs and such? I'm just learning about the value of using plants of all kinds for taking care of my family 😊
Thanks so much for talking us through your rationale for what you're planting and when. I've always had trouble with getting alyssum to thrive and am excited to try it this fall/winter. I'm also excited about my Romanesco broccoli. First time growing and they're so other worldly. Nature is miraculous!

I love the wild garden! My fall garden is very slow this year. It's just been an odd year all around herein NE Arizona
This is how I garden! Lol sometimes on purpose, sometimes not lol. Tried starting Pineapple ground cherries and nothing... tried them in a pot outside...nothing! Put some in raised bed, nothing.... so I thought. Forgot about them and was like oh this space is empty.. peppers it is. Then next thing I know there are plants popping up. Ground cherries galore 😂. They found their way around all the pepper plants.

I'm in NE Alabama... it's hot... and drought right now(need feet seen it this dry), by the time I'd be able to grow a fall garden we'll have frost! I've also found around here there's more post pressure on fall gardens than my spring garden.
Wasabi radish!!!! I sowed wasabi Collards 1 week ago! Big fan of wasabi! :) Mixed with soy sauce and added to anything that could be sushi :)
I live in northern WI zone 4b, weather here gets to -30°F every winter, and our first hard frost is going to be in the next few weeks. My summer garden really sucked this year and I really wanted to do a fall garden but the soil NEEDED amendments this fall. I’m looking forward to next season. I dream of being able to succession plant but never seem to get things going soon enough for things to be successful. I’ve been enjoying learning from you and other garden channels to hopefully have better luck next year lol. I’m also considering starting my own channel to help keep me accountable to working in the garden even when it’s hot and miserable out.

Jess, that Mexican sage (Salvia leucantha) would probably not survive a hard winter in your climate, especially if grown in a pot (Plants are much more vulnerable to cold in pots). I'd suggest dragging the pot into the greenhouse or polytunnel this year (It's borderline hardy) and taking cuttings next summer, which easily root in gritty compost. You could plant out those cuttings the following year and let them take their chances.
If you did a greenhouse cleanup I would love to watch and hear your thoughts on decision making what you keep and what you let go of. etc.

I think that Mexican bush sage can be grown from cuttings, if you want to try that. It sure is pretty.
I thought your greenhouse fans sounded like rain. It wasn’t too loud or bothersome at all. A little relaxing, actually.
This way of planting is exactly how I garden (and the forgetting to label, even though I do take pics and videos, but then still forget I tucked things in among other things). But... like you said, being able to plant and not make it an ordeal helps me actually do it way more than if it all had to be organized and planned out.
FYI. I had a bunch of Greek oregano that I didn't get out and cut back in time because I was sick. From now on I will always leave a bunch to go to seed and flower because the bees absolutely went nuts over it.
Your explanation of the fall sowing is spot on. I've been direct sowing for at least 3 weeks. I did some more rutabaga again😂. This time I put a clear plastic lid on top and watered it before I put the tiny seeds in the tiny holes. I didn't even cover them. I think the dew will be enough. I can mist tomorrow so I can be sure they are wet. It's a 💯 hodgepodge 😂 of sowing. I sowed carrots like 3x. My gosh and the labeling. Yeah I kept moving them. Because on one side it didn't germinate, but the next spot it did. I'm like, why did I even label. 😂
You mentioned your roses are back in bloom. Here in the northern prairies of Canada. My roses have finally started blooming again. Along with my bearded irises??? Can anyone tell me have you’ve ever seen your irises bloom in the fall? I’ve only ever experienced them blooming early spring, maybe beginning of summer. What a treat as they are all black lilies.🖤🌱
My mom & I grew bearded irises for many years. I have seen them rebloom in the Fall, but usually only when the Summer was hot & dry, near-drought. Roses will sometimes do that too.
Some bearded iris will rebloom in the fall, that is actually a trait that is being selected for & developed by some iris breeders. Reblooming is very climate dependent even in varieties of iris that consistently rebloom.
Can you grow irises in a container? Having moved from a house into a one-bedroom apartment with a balcony I would really like to have irises again
@@sandrainontario6710 I would assume you could. Of course, in Canadian winters because the weather is harsh and long I’m not entirely sure how strong the rhizome would be in the spring.… But it would definitely be worth a shot. There are some beautiful varieties out there and as long as they had some nice insulation (such as burlap)those pots for winter, I think it would be a good possibility that. Yes you can grow irises in pots. Good luck. Hopefully it works out for you.
@@mellfraze8112 thank you for the response. I had no idea that they would re-bloom again in the fall I have six varieties in my backyard new to my yard last year. I’m ecstatic that they’re blooming! They’re gorgeous blooms!
I inhaled fast and deep and then held my breath when you bit into that radish, lol. I know what they taste like. 😂 Didn't seem as bad as the pepper incident though. 😁

Roses bloom three times spring summer and fall.
Had our first frost last night and another tonight, then back to a bit warmer again. Will start harvesting parsnip now! But all my squash and beans are toast. My tomatoes may survive to ripen a few more. Took everything with colour off today but didn't have time to get the green ones yet. Thanks for the beautiful and lush visuals as my garden goes to bed for the year!

I like the idea of just tossing in more seeds when you harvest a spot. 😊 Will you reach a point where you can’t plant any more outside? I had figured I was out of time for planting carrots and beets but my you tube friends keep telling me I still can. 😂 Think I’m going to give it a shot. First frost is estimated for October 14 but we have weather in the 90’s still this week. 🥴
Sigh, I’m just figuring out what beds to shut down for winter. It’s predicted that it will be a cold snowy winter. I do have some beans, cabbage, carrots and iceberg lettuce should be OK up to freeze up but only chickens in the winter gardens here. 🇨🇦 and the girls may be choosing to stay mostly in the coop this year.

I had a bucket full of green tomatoes left from my tower mater plants. I did my first canning yesterday! I made green tomato pickle relish! I used a recipe from Google, however the recipe had a heavy celery flavor. I used some garlic salt and powder, and added a little bit of balsamic vinegar. I was pleased with the end result. I thought the water bath canning didn't seal the jars, but after they cooled, they sealed. I plan on making green tomato and raspberry jam on my next canning adventure! I love watching your videos, and you have given me true inspiration to follow my heart, and pursue the end goal of owning my own homestead one day!!

Salvia leucantha, Mexican bush sage comes in purple like yours and a deeper purple and white variety. I used to work at the Greenery in HHI and we would always sell a ton of these when they burst into glorious bloom this time of year! Love the fuzzy flowers and leaves!

Good afternoon Jess really enjoy your videos so much doubt I'll be sowing a fall garden this year having alot of problems with my legs n hips n trying to help with my granddaughter thats special needs her moms finance has cancer n has to go to Knoxville for treatments so that takes alot of my time but its ok

Wasabi Radish is... strong. I tried it once and didn't care for it either, a bit of a bummer when they get sent as the 'free seed' from one of the seed companies I use :p

Mexican sage is among my favorite flowers because it is perennial though dies after a few years in NC. B😢ut omg, it produces volumes of incredible purple/blue blossoms when all the other things stop blooming and takes zero care - unfortunately, I’d love to find a sustainable source.
Why not try to over winter some of the peppers and have a head start for next year?

That Mexican Sage is beautiful. The tiny bee looked like one of the many solitary bees we have in the U.S. Most are really docile, friendly, & won't sting unless you're inadvertently squishing them. Solitary bees are about 100× more effective pollinators than non-native honeybees. (All honeybees are non-native to the U.S., having been brought in from Europe.)
I'd find something amazing to make with the wasabi radishes - a grated sauce would be good. I just learned that due to labelling rules only about 10% of what's bottled as wasabi sauce actually is. Read the labels. Most are made with horseradish.
