Between this and recent handhelds it seems like we're finally getting devices of a decent quality and usability and even for an affordable price. For years it seemed every device under $150 had at least one major flaw. Whether it was horrible controls, terrible screen, or even hardware that wasn't capable of emulating the systems! I'm glad things are finally changing!
24:00 - Axelay appears to be running a little slow, judging by the shooting speed. I love that game..... Stage 2 music is so good. Konami was so awesome in the 80's & 90's.
TIL there's a Fatal Fury Special on the GG and it looks and animates like a beast. What a marvelous machine. The speaker looks the right size to be an 8ohm one for arcade cabinet usage and it must have a good amp circuit driving it, they did a real good job on this.
Great minds think alike. Had to buy this as soon as I saw it, love the proper aspect, buttons and quality sound. Mine had a different game list (only 92 CPS with a lot of hacks). You can add more ROMs but have to edit the XML file in settings/res/ to show in the menu (very tedious), hoping someone uploads some curated romsets + xml in the future.
Glad I saw this comment, I was literally just about to hit "complete purchase". Sounds like a pain in the ass, I'll pass. Not sure why just dragging and dropping into the folder wouldn't do the trick, but I'm not that tech savy or patient to edit XML files.
Though I think a different, darker color for plastic shell of the unit would have looked less cheap, the A12 seems fairly nice given the price, the larger screen, good sound, and the decent controls.
We are certainly entering the new era. And what's even better from now on, its going to be only more interesting. Powkiddy V90 for its price is a great handheld with good OS. And now this one. How would you compare this to the official mini arcades like Neo Geo ?
This is honestly one of the nicest Chinese Emulation devices I have ever seen come out of China to date. It does just about everything right & was sold at a VERY reasonable price. I can't tell you how impressed I was with this thing! That really sucks about the HDMI filter tho. Really wish there was a way to turn it off.

Yes, this is one of those systems that honestly does make you sit back in awe. Sure, it's not 100% perfect but it is very good, especially considering the price.
The screen is not IPS, it's a TN panel. You tested the horizontal viewing angles, but TN never had a problem with that, it's the vertical viewing angles it struggles with. If you look at the screen from below the colours invert, and blacks go way off from anything other than looking straight on (vertically). Would be nice to find a 9" IPS/*VA/OLED panel to upgrade this unit with, as otherwise it's a nice little bit of kit. The TN does OK, but could be much nicer.

Also planning to put some different OS on there as the stock one isn't great at recognising new games, unless you go into the retroarch subsystem. They've had other versions of this same one for about a year now, and the Powkiddy ones are actually really good! The one I have is the 7" screen tho unfortunately.

Hey, man, is there a way to change the difficulty setting of FBA fighting games? Like for, example, on the RG 350 you press L1,R1, and select simultaneously and a menu will come where there is “SETTING UP THE SOFT DIP”, where you can adjust the difficulty of any fighting game from the default to LEVEL 1. How do you access this on the Powkiddy A12?
If only everything coming out of China like this would just function properly at the very least. Seems like 90% of what you get out of China doesn't even function right. Looks like this is yet another rare case where it does. These are the only Chinese devices I actually do buy when they are actually decent like this.

Not to be that guy Retro Core but, on the History tab, that's 1944, not 1941 as you said it. But I don't blame you when we got games like 1941, the original 1942, 1943 & Kai,and 1944. One them I am curious about with some of these systems (the ones that CAN run PSX games anyway) is how they deal with varying resolutions- the high res mode etc used in menus for some games and the like

The only problem I have with this is the relative few games that will actually use the widescreen (though GBA and PSP should look nice...if it can handle PSP). A lot of older arcade games used vertically oriented screens though, and they'll probably look tiny here.
That's not an issue because there is a 4:3 setting. It's no different than playing PS2, Dreamcast or older on a modern TV. Widescreen is there for games that need it while everything else can be in 4:3 mode. Perfect.
Saw you said that you can actually exit Retroarch. Makes me wonder what sort of OS this thing is running & what you might actually be able to do with it, if anything. Makes me wonder if an external keyboard could maybe be used if this thing is running either Android or Linux in the background.

By the way, what version of Android does this run off of? And can you change out various RetroArch cores and things like that or is it all static? I assume you can at least change the ROMS that are on the card to English ones, is that right?
All of that is in the firmware, not on the card. You can't change cores without replacing the firmware, and I don't know how to find out what version of Android it runs. You can replace the ROMs, but if you want them to show up in the games folder, you need to edit an XML file. You can just run any ROM from the file browser, though.

That is a shame about the cores, as it would have been nice to be able to test various cores with the system as I really don't trust the Chinese developers to have done so. As for the games, I much prefer to load my ROMS via a file browser anyway, so that works for me. I actually hate it when a system only allows you to pick games from a predetermined menu and not from the file system, I really hate that. As long as all of the cores allow me to do so then I'm fine, but if they don't then that would be a big problem.

The hardware is nice but the software is awful. Just a very limited version of RetroArch and a random selection of games in English, Chinese and Japanese.

I just put the ROMs into folders, couldn't care less about game art. If the games work that's all I need.

Compared to the Neo Geo Mini, this is way better. Better controls, better sound, more selection and playable on the move.

Real arcade buttons & joysticks! Sounds like a dream! Can you please test Mortal Kombat MAME? Usually that is where portable emulators suffer.
This uses FBA for all of the arcade emulation, not MAME. It won't run any version of Mortal Kombat I can find.

What is the battery life of this unit?
Hmm, around 4 hours but it all depends on how lout you have it and screen brightness.
Anybody else find that every game on it has slightly choppy scrolling? Is there a way to fix that?

It doesn't have PSP built in but I believe adding an updated firmware fixes that. I've not updated this unit.

This machine allows you to change between 16:9 and 4:3 so having the TV set to auto will be fine.

The old powkiddy a12 dont have ips screen. Now the last powkiddy a12 have IPs screen and its really better

The roms are in Chinese due to the game lists being in Chinese. If you add English titled roms the games list will be in English 👍

28:58 to be honest I more like support this kind console, many game company these day try so hard to make their game just look good while play like shit, if illegal give me better stuff why i need support legal stuff where only give you 10-50 game and some of it even have problem.

The hardware is nice but the software is awful. Just a very limited version of RetroArch and a random selection of games in English, Chinese and Japanese.
That's kind of typical for these Chinese systems. The software always sufferes.

@@RetroCore I bought it from a reputable store in ali express, quality is very good emulation and everything but seems that they now put cheaper screens and i confirmed this with other buyers that had same problem. I requested a refund as i also got many dead pixels on screen.
