    In the event that the entire exhaust system and air filter are modified, a retune is indeed essential. However, if only the slip-ons are modified, a retune is not required.

    Thanks for explaining and sharing your experiences. What you said in the video is indeed a general consensus and I cannot agree more. Tuner is needed when BOTH high flow air intake AND full pipe system are put onto the bike, and it makes "these three things" a Stage 1 Upgrade.
    But, I have heard another statement and wondered if it is true : The first thing you do before getting your slip-ons is a tuner cuz the tuner will cool your bike down and make it run better. This confuses me.
    Adding a tuner to a 100% stock bike is like telling the ECM the parameters that she already knew. Why do I need a tuner on a 100% stock Harley?

If im doing a slip on and an air cleaner you should retune but not just mufflers, the stock headers have the CAT and very restrictive. I have a question to this topic: I recently got a 2020 Sportster Iron 883, and found a good deal on a set of '07 STOCK Softail mufflers, which do NOT have cats like my stock mufflers do. They sound great, bike still runs great (although I can smell it's a little leaner), but my question is, is running the older mufflers with no cats (baffles are still in place and complete) going to hurt my bike? It has not been tuned, and it is otherwise completely stock.

    I literally just asked all these questions of my dealer. On a brand new 23 breakout. Their answer is that the stock muffler slip on have catalytic converters built-in. So removing them would require a tune. But on top of that you can potentially run it without a tune but you will get more pop and bang exhaust without a tune supposedly.

      @@TheMotoJawnstory time…..after not riding for 35 years, I needed to get back into it. So at age 72, I bought a 2012 xl1200 custom. I got it from Brandywine, and it only had 1906 miles on it. It was mid January so the weather sucked, and I didn’t test ride it. What could be wrong with a bike with only 1906 miles on it? I had worked at HD in York back in 1982. This was when HD bought the company back from AMF. Back then, HD only made a handful of models. Everything was made in York except for the engines and trans units. That’s where I came in contact with the Sportster. Always wanted one. It just fit. Anyway, I finally got to ride the bike in March of 22. It hadVance & Hines pipes on it. Not slip ons. The bike ran well, but ran rough. It backfired a bit when down shifting. I pulled the plugs, but they were fine. There wasn’t a tuner installed. So after 500 miles, I decided to go test ride another Sportster. I found a 2014 xl1200ca custom at Freedom Valley. I rode it and immediately knew the difference. The 2014 had Python pipes, a big air cleaner, and a tuner in it. A full Stage 1. It was peppier, smoother, and way nicer looking. Done deal. Bought it. Also found out that the 2012 sumped the oil. So to be honest, you are probably right. If they were just slip ons, then a tuner might not be necessary. But I am tickled with my newer Sportster. End of story.

    • @thisiserich
      @thisiserich Год назад

      @@phildiegidio4658 If I remember correctly, 2014 was the first year the sportster got O2 sensors. Those O2 sensors give the bike the ability to make its own minor adjustments depending on air flow. It can run the bike richer or leaner on its own by about 10%. Pre 2014, the sportster had to rely on the static tune in the ecm. So even a small change would put it out of whack. So long story short, if you have O2 sensors you should be fine throwing on some slip ons without a tune. If you don’t have O2 sensors, then you should get a tune with any performance upgrade.

    The European market require 4 o2 sensors ( 2 on headers and 2 on mufflers) Can not get the slip ons with housing on o2 sensor, so tune is required when changing mufflers. Stock Airfilter is high-flo so no need to be changed. For now, changing slip ons you will lost low end torque, gain more hp and more more sounds. To not lost torque you will need back pressure like on stock mufflers. Also Tune , changing slip ons in Europe may void the warranty. USA market is still fine, changing only slip ons will not afffect warranty on the bike, because, there is no o2 sensors.

      I have a 2021 iron 1200. Put V&H slip ons on and it runs like crap. Have a FP3 on the way. Hope it helps. I will say that the first attempt to tighten my slip ons, they were leaking at the clamp.

      @jeeper911 My iron 883 has been popping when releasing the gas and changing gears, torque was less and now its been loosing power when i have a passenger, when riding solo it works fine. Im blaming the slipons

    You can tune a stock bike for a “peppy” ride.
    To me tuning a bike for slip ons is a waste of money.

    Now it costs hundreds of dollars to change the jets.

    Slip-ons need a tune? Absolutely not. Wait until the cam and full exhaust. Waste of $$$ with slip-ons. Also, NEVER ever use a Screaming Eagle tuner. Total waste of money. Yea, it maintains a warranty but it does no good. Screaming Eagle though quality parts are crappy parts in terms of performance.
