Modifying motorcycles can be tons of fun. Actually tuning them to run perfectly? Not so much. Lemmy’s here to help you decide whether or not you need to retune your bike. Once you’ve made a decision, head over to RevZilla.com to learn more about specific tuning solutions for your ride.
Answered the question of retuning required for K&N Hi Flow air filter: No.
And in under three minutes.
Saved me much needed time.
Thanks
Good job, I modified air intake and pipes on Indian Chieftain'18, didn't do tune, since I don't want to gain lousy 10 hp, I get much better fuel consumption, and engine works absolutely smooth.
Look bro, I just want my sportster to be a little louder without spending a thousand dollars lol
Sporster... Lol
Alpaca Joe 2 wheels is 2 wheels bud
Same here lol
Get some Vance and hines slip ones lol
I head you could but you won’t get 100 without an ECU
On my 2018 Iron 1200 I just did slip-ons... I think the bike was run so lean for emissions from factory that a tune is necessary.. To me, looking down the pipes I took off and the pipes I put on, it seems totally fair to think yeahh this needs adjustment. Then again, I treat my bike like I love it without guessing! U guys rock RevZ! Thanks as always I'll be ordering my FP3 today!
I'm loving these two minute lessons!
Thank you very much for this video. It was very informative. I just bought my first bike....2023 Indian Scout Rogue, and I installed Handmo slip ons. A couple people told me that it would start running lean and a tune was a must. I don't wanna park my bike before i can get it tuned. You put my mind at ease. I may still get a tune, but now i can still ride until the shop can fit me in. Thank you again.
Well you answered my question, I have a 2020 scout bobber and wanted some aftermarket slipons to make it louder. I was worried I’d have to shell out more $$ to take it somewhere to tune it. Thanks!
You should, those slip ons are filled with a mesh webbing and changes the fuel ratio big time.
@@RBRM3 dang, I get mixed answers from several people. Most people, including Indian, say slipons do not affect air and gas mix because I have the stock air filter. I would like for someone on RUclips to get it dynos before and after replacing the exhaust to see any gains or losses, running too lean or not etc
@@stogie0608 be nice, I ran slip ons on a CBR and I lost 8 on my top speed because I didn't change the ratio, but it didn't make it miss, on a Harley, going from something that actually is filled full of stuff, going to something practically wide open will make enough of a difference to start frying parts.
If your slip on matches the internal style of the factory one then you will be ok, otherwise if it's just gutted, I would spend the money.
I have the stock air filter still and my bike thinks both o2 sensors are out, so you definitely don't need to change the intake to have to change the air/fuel ratio.
This guy is the only guy I trust with advice.
Answered my question in a minute and a half without a bunch of bs, thank you!
I still have my cat in but have dna megaphone slipons an took the packing out an no need for a tune an it sounds good
This was helpful! What if i literally just take off my stock mufflers and leave the stock pipes. Do i need to tune it?
Lol, I read the thumbnail but not the title, I was expecting a "Plug or patch a tyre" video.
Myles Prower I did too. I was really confused when I heard tuning stuff.
If you just put on a set of V&H short shots and stay with the stock AC an auto tune is not necessary it won’t damage your engine.
Your Welcome.
based off what experience? not attacking you but I've installed short shots and S&S air cleaner but the vance and Hines fuelpak fp3 I have doesn't work and I want to ride it before my scheduled time to take it into Harley dealer
Ryan Pragnell Based off of the experience of my local shop
If it were going to damage the engine they would have no vested interest in telling customers you don’t have to do a tune on a bike that you just put V&H pipes on because if that damaged the motor there would be allot of angry people coming back to that shop raising all kinds of heck over
The stealership just wants to charge you more money
That being said I believe that a tune will make it run better.
Hi about instaling full exhaust system do you really need to remap/tune the ecu? My bike is r3 iheard pop pop pop every time my rpm is 6k up when i let go the gas pop pop pop
I heard something interesting about new triumphs… when you change the exhaust, start the bike and let it idle for exactly 15 minutes and turn it off. The next time you ride the ecu will self learn and adjust to the new exhaust. Have you heard of such a thing? I was actually told that by a dealer…
Breakin' the Law! Breakin' the Law! With my Power Commander III
Where I live dynos are quite rare. Closest one to me was an hour and a half away on terrible roads and highways. Got a full ECU rework of my brand-new 750 and road it home while noticing the little differences. Car pulled out in front of me 20 minutes from home. First motorvehicle accident ever. Knocked the wind out of me and was sore for a few days, but I still road home on my half smashed bike. Ran pretty well. Little wary of doing more upgrades :*(
Wow thats crazy. Was that your first bike?
Had my first wreck couple weeks ago after I put new plastics and exhaust on my CBR 1000. Totaled my bike. I’m done w overhauls lol
Solo was my 2nd bike, still have it. Went from a Ninja 300 to a GSXR 750. The EMTs that showed up said they were talking about GSXRs when they got the call and they happened to be in my town prior to showing up at the accident lol.
We will call this one the “Lemmy undercover video” . It was titled tire plug or patch a tire lol. Anyway I live in California and run Cobra slip ons which are for racing only on all my bikes. I did a stage 1 upgrade high flow air and remap. Yes it is all illegal according to epa guidelines but it doesn’t effect my warranties.
Watching this in 2022 and love it very simple to understand short video totally love it .
Thank you for this video, answered my question. Just added a K&N filter to an otherwise stock Tiger 955, wasn't sure if I'd need a re-tune.
When I changed the mufflers(To Firebrand Loose Cannon) on my 18 Custom 1200(HD) it ran fine. Just a little Popping on Deceleration. When I installed the Arlen Ness Stage 1 Intake, Also did the FP3. Called V&H for the correct map to use. They had one Close to my setup. Runs fine.
My 2017 sportster 48 doesn’t like the Fuelpak. It ran like crap. Put the basic map back on it. Now it is running better. Running Vanes short shots and vanes air cleaner.
What about 3/4 exhaust ? Or an exhaust that removes the catalytic converters ?? I noticed my motorcycle o2 sensors are between the headers and the cats.
So my main question is if I pull the baffles out of my 2017 HD Breakout (103cid) do I need a retune? Keeping all else stock, just pulling baffles.
Miss this guy. 😢 great info
Slipon dont require fuel tune - unless you have 2 stroke since they have backwash thing going on- whatever comes out of pipe 4 stroke it's already done deal
Something isn't making sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so he said manufacturers care about getting through emission regulation (by practically making the fuel/air mixture lean),
and it is ok to go with a slip-on or high-airflow muffler which makes it even more leaner.
A QUESTION: wont such high airflow mufflers drive the fuel air mixture beyond the limit of a healthy lean mixture?
Will there be no more new gear for the month/Redline videos, or are you all just skipping this month? You make great free content, and I miss it when it’s not there. Also, is a review of the HJC RPHA 90 coming soon?
The Redline will be back for June. Also, yes, there will be an RPHA 90 review coming soon. -DrewZilla
I have a fuel injected scooter. Used to have an airbox but changed to a pod filter recently. No modifications done to the engine nor exhaust. Do i need to retune ?
If I do a slip on exhaust and high flow filter do I need to add tuner or just get a dyno tune?? Confused here on this subject
Need an answer to this as well....
Lem would never bend the law, now that other guy, he is a bit shady. Cheers
One thing not addressed. Do you have to tune the bike if you get another oem muffler put on?
CAUTION!
I my local dealer return my bike.
And now my speedo wouldn't display gear selection .
My 2016 softail feels like it lost bottom end torque after installing big radius pipes. It runs fine other than that. But that bottom end hit of stump pulling power feels way less now. I got stock 103 high output air clear but it has a KN filter in it. Will a tune get that low rpm torque back ??
Have a problem with my engine knocking.
Is it possible that the ECU programming cause the engine to start knocking ?
Is it possible that the factory mapping could become corrupt or partially corrupt and cause engine knocking ?
Thank you !
I have watched a few of ur videos on exhausts. I've learned more than I thought. I would appreciate a suggestion on a full exhaust system for my 2017 Ducati 959 panigale. I bought it new and now it's time for a new exhaust. And suggestions of a good system would help. I've looked at so many my brain went to overload
I got a Vulcan s a few months back it’s obv very quiet. I’ve been thinking about getting a tune and a full delkevic system. I don’t want to void my warranty though? The thing is slip-ons arent appealing to me either so idk
If I install a TBR exhaust on my Softail without a dynojet and I ride it for a lil while before I install the dyno will it harm the engine or affect it in any way?
I have a "10 Fatboy with Vance and Hines slip on exhaust, can I remove the baffles without the need to be retuned even if it was retuned after install?
Soo if I’m not mistaken slipper exhaust not much need to tune ?
Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!! Awesome!!!!!!
I'm not trying to spend $500 on the fuel pack made by V&H!
My front is now missing and thinks the O2 is out on my Roadster though!
Apparently I can run diagnostics with the info button/kill switch, there was my fun fact for the day from HD!
I had bought an exhaust on my gy6(1P39QMB) 50cc moped and it was working fine the first 2hours then it started bogging/sputtering. I heard I need to retune, what would be my best option ?
Do motorbikes have oxygen sensors, and mass air flow sensors?
So if you choose to change both, the air filter and just a slip on and not the whole exhaust system, then you should retune? If so, does that also apply to the Honda Monkey?
Great Video Lemmy... Very informative... but where is the May Redline and the April Redline bike test.. M
There isn't a Redline for May, but it will return for June. Here is April's Redline. -DrewZilla

I think these videos are a little too short to impart any meaningful knowledge. I would suggest making these 5-7 minutes or so, so that Lem doesn't have to rush through like crazy to get to the end of the thing, and I'm sure also there's not one person here that minds watching him talk a little more. Hell, I'm pretty sure half of us would still watch if he was just silently staring back disapprovingly for a full 15 minutes.
Judas Priest. I'm running an EJK on my CBR300R with a K&N air filter and Yoshi Carbon slip on. The EJK is a must. These bikes are sold on the extreme lean side out of the box so they can claim it gets 1 million miles to the gallon on the sale data sheet. .
Im conflicted and pissed off all at once. I purchased a 2018 48 with vance and hines short shots and a s&s breather and was told it was tuned by the dealership. The bike runs awesome and I never questioned it, but come to find out it has never been tuned.
1. I officially am done with that dealership and they just lost a life long customer. I would have still bought it had I known it wasn't tuned but I hate being lied to and I could literally hear his voice shake when the owner told me it wasn't tuned. I was going to order cams and I am glad I didn't because it would have been a shit show on an untuned bike (I know it would have to be retuned anyways but still a waste of money to do cams when it hasn't even been tuned)
2. Like I said it runs amazing and I am actually scared to fuck with the tune because of how it runs, I am thinking on a power vision or an fp3. Again, I am conflicted lol
Hi I had only replaced air filter on my Harley 48 2021. Do I need to tune my bike?
Help! I just changed a full exhaust on a k4 Gsx-R. Headers, midpipe and slip on. But it seems to run and drive perfect! No weak spots down the rev-range. The previous owner had a aftermarket slip on aswell, but it seems to run better than with that slip on only. Is it really necessary to tune it? Because it's quite expensive
Is it Lawful or is it Legal?
Hey guys... just bought a used FZ-07 from a dealership who installed a stock exhaust after taken out the aftermarket exhaust from prior owner. I am picking up the bike on Wednesday. Will I need a retune now that the bike is back to stock? It didn’t occur to ask the dealer and on the work sheet there was no mention of a reflash or retune.
Really not knowledgeable about these things. Thanks!
I have a bandit gsf600s I’m gonna y pipe at the bottom and run dual exhaust 🤷♂️ you think I’ll haft to tune my carbs
Where is Lem now
Is there any plans on a revzilla phone app to order gear on instead of just the website? Would be alot more convenient. I think people would like it
There's always a possibility. -DrewZilla
I bought a 2021 Kawasaki Ninja 650 ABS. I have a Bazzaz race tuner on it. I have full Yoshimura pipes. I recently had it tuned. The tune is insane. I have the file. If interested, please contact me.
Than you for posting this information.
I have a HD street bob stock and I have open headers and a heavy breather elite would i need a tune
I have 2020 Road Glide with Vance and Hines slip ons. If I change the cleaner myself would it be safe to ride the bike to the dealer for them to tune it?
I just installed a Vance and Hines slip on exhaust and plant to add the Vance and Hines VO2 naked intake. Do you recommend a ECU re flash or tuner?
do I need to tune my bike after cutting my baffles short?
Would this cause my bike to bog and smoke the exhaust if I got the new exhaust and not retune
I have a 2 into 1 not baffled pipe. It was tuned that way. If I wanted to change the exhaust does the baffle need to be out as well since the bike was tuned that way ?
Would a cbr250r need a retune with just a slip on shorty since the cat is in the stock muffler?
Hi if you change exhaust Do I need to retune? I mean I get dyno before with akrapovic megaphone then I’m planning to change my exhaust to hootbodies mgp
I've had fuel tuners on my last couple stock bikes. Not for power, as they both had big, strong inlines to begin with. I got them to quell the jerky on/off throttle response.
On my FJR I got some results, but not stellar. It did seem pokier (and louder) in the midrange, but on/off fueling was still more abrupt than I like. On my Versys it worked well. I don't notice any power difference thru the rest of the band, but fueling on/off throttle is great now.
SUPER LATE and I think I know the answer. Just copped a 2017 ZX-6R KRT with an interesting set up. Its a gutted Cat, stock mid pipe (resonator thing behind wheel), MP4 muffler, and stock air filter. What is your suggestion. Thanks mate!
You still got her bro ?
I got a the exact same Ninja and model , first thing I done is get that stupid microwave/ bread box OUT the bike, still have my stock down pipes with the cat inside but removed that bread box put a scorpion mid pipe ( link pipe) to connect to my scorpion Gp exhaust, trust me take that stupid useless breadbox out, also I didn’t need to flash / tune because I didn’t remove the cats so I dont know if your bike has already been but it should be flashed /tuned
@@jazmx91 yes runs great with a dynojet power commander 6 -- I did a slip on tune & had no issues. Lower temps and it shoots flames occasionally. Did you have a question?
@@jazmx91 Yes I installed a power commander 6 and installed a slightly aggressive slip on tune to compensate. I hear you on the mid muffler, it's just without the cats it can get crazy without the extra suppression. Thing sounds great but who knows next year I might just say fuck it lol
@@Hello_Apee i actually do ! Have you noticed a major difference in power ?
Have you tested the top speed with the PC ?
Is it worth it and how much did it cost ?
If you already re tuned your bike when you got a new air cleaner do you have to re tune again when you add a new exhaust system or was once enough?
Great question.
You typically should re-tune the bike whenever you make a drastic change to the intake or exhaust.
That said, if you just changed to a new slip-on you can typically get by without a new tune. However, a full exhaust swap definitely will benefit from a more tailored tune.
I hope that helps!
-Zack
Ive got a gsxr 750 ive got a slip on bit i wanna delete the cat and put a k&n filter will it be necessary to remap the ecu?
Closest dyno is like an hour away and not sure if reputable.. if I modify my exhaust like remove the cat, should I use a power commander or maybe purchase some sort of reflashed ECU?? 2006 GSXR 600
Yes, if you remove the cat, you'll want a power commander, ECU reflash, or dyno tune. -DrewZilla
How do you know if the carb is running lean or rich?
kiraanimerawr1 reading spark plugs and heat
Question for anyone really, I have an 05 Electra glide 88tc just installed a vo2 cagefighter air filter and I have longshots can I run the super q baffles in the exhaust or run the standard baffles? Also what would be a recommended tune for either setup? Thanks.
Hi about instaling full exhaust system do you really need to remap/tune the ecu? My bike is r3 iheard pop pop pop every time my rpm is 6k up when i let go the gas pop pop pop
I don't understand why with just slip-ons there is no need for tuning, while with a full exhaust it should be tuned. I'd love to put a couple of V&H Shortshots on my Ironhead 2019. And actually I'd love to also change the AC because the stock one looks awful on the black bike. Could I go ahead just with the Shortshots without tuning?
no and dont run short shots your making it run worse than stock pipes
Ive got new exhaust and custom filter on my sportster should i tune it?
Is it possible to get much more out of most BMWs? I've got a '14 R1200GS and I will admit I wouldn't mind if having just a bit more kick, or noise.
(I've only recently started riding btw), and I have a question lol, can I ride a bike up a hill? if I can how steep and also whats the best bikes oriented for that?....any reply would be helpful...im more about cruisers.
Yes, you can definitely ride a motorcycle up a hill. You can ride a cruiser on the same steep roads that cars can drive on. -DrewZilla
Sorry for sounding like a idiot, i literally only started riding last week
Ride safe
2019 sportster 1200, Slip ons added, I have a new intake filter assembly as well to put on. Do I have to tune the bike now? Or can I ride it with no real issues adding those parts? Grapevine of folks say must tune or engine damage!
Did you ever figure this out because I’m dealing with the same thing just the slip ons tho
quick question: I've just received a replacement of a faulty FP3, do i install it as a new FP? Do I have to marry it again to my bike and tune over again? Can I marry it to a different bike? I am considering of changing my bike and was thinking of using it on a different one. Cheers
You may want to reach out to Vance & Hines via www.vanceandhines.com for more specific tech support questions for the FP3 and how VIN marrying works, but if you received a new replacement for a previously defective device, this is typically a brand new device which will require you to start from scratch and is usable on one (and only one ever!) motorcycle which is not required to be the one your original device was connected to. -DM
You might not respond but I’m going to ask anyway. If I buy a yoshimura SLIP ON for my 2010 RM-Z250 would I need a tuner? Thanks in advance!
If you just buy a slip-on, then you generally don't need a tuner. Once you go to a full exhaust, then you generally need a tuner. -DrewZilla
I bought a second hand bike (K9 gsx-r 750) that has a full exhaust system and no cat, it's loud as f***. It's ecu flashed for the wide open pipe, do I need to reflash it if I add db killer on it? I would like it a bit less loud 😅
I don't think so, as the name suggests, db killer only affects sound to reduce db (sound intensity) it doesnt affect your motor performance, cmiiw
@@ezon725 it creates more back pressure to exhaust system tho. 🤔
@@SipePerkele well yeah, adding a DB killer can slightly impact your bike’s performance as it limits the airflow out of the exhaust system. however the effect is insignificant, and many aftermarket exhaust factory already pre-installed their dB killers to pass regulations.
However mind that your aftermarket exhaust with/without DB killer have better performance than your standard/factory exhaust.
@@ezon725 but after its straight pipe, doesn't it create too much heat to the end can? Having carbon fiber one makes me a bit concerned when the pressure and heat rises a lot 😬
I slapped some slip ons on my 2014 street glide and she has no issues without the tune.
fliplul my 2012 Ultra was pinging with stock pipes. It's worse with Street Cannons. It runs too lean. I just ordered a FP3 to stop the pinging, and cool the motor.
Guys help me out here. Gonna have a cbr650r 2022. Want to put a decat (not full system) austin racing gp1r exhaust on it. Do I need to tune it or remap it? On their site it says I dont have to but im scared I'll fuck up something. Even tho I would prefer not to remap it
Lemmy I'm looking at a used 2019 z900 with a full aftermarket exhaust and I'm not sure if it's been tuned. How can I tell? What would it cost? Is it safe to run without a retune?
If it pops a whole lot on deceleration, it may not have been tuned. Also, if the throttle response feels sluggish, it may not have been tuned. One way to tell is to ask the seller or look to see if a fuel tuner has also been installed. A retune/dyno can cost a couple hundred dollars, but a fuel tuner is about the same. -DrewZilla
Do a tuner review for HD bikes.
We have. Take a look at a few below. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla

Not against the law to increase performance and help the bike run better.
I saw an oxygen sensor manipulator "piggyback" system on the web which allow riders to control afr manually (across the whole rev range), will it suffice as an alternative to a tune or do I still need a proper ECU remap? Thanks
dont ever run a piggyback tuner shit will destroy your ecm over time
Lem clearly loves the Priest
I have full yoshimura rs2 exhaust system on my Drz400 2019 . Do i need to remap?
Well the DRZ400 has a carburetor, so there's no fuel map to actually 'remap'. Instead, you probably do need to tune and possibly rejet your carburetor if it's running lean right now. -DrewZilla
I have Vance and Hines slip ons ,14 street glide. Do I need tuner thank you
If you have a stock air cleaner, then you don't absolutely need a tuner with slip-ons. A tuner can help, sure, but it's not necessary. Once you add an aftermarket air cleaner in addition to slip-ons, or you install a full system exhaust, then you would definitely need a tuner. -DrewZilla
Hi if I have put a slip on and a K&N air filter on my suzuki gsx s1000 2016 do I need a tune?
I’d like to install the v&h widow slip-ons on my ‘17 HD nightrod special, would it be ok to just put on the mufflers ? Or should i do some tuning ?
With just slip-ons, you don't need to do any tuning. If you later add an aftermarket air cleaner or install a full exhaust, then you should do some tuning. Hope this helps! (bit.ly/30pyL6O) -DrewZilla
I have a completely stock 2015 street bob. Do I need a retune or will I suffer damaging my engine if I run a K&N cold air intake on my bike without any other modifications?
If you run an intake without any other modifications, you should be fine. However, if you're installing the intake to try to improve power, then you'll want to retune your bike to match the increased airflow. -DrewZilla
What bike would be best for someone who’s only ‘5”4 and a first time rider?
Take a look at the Honda Rebel. -DrewZilla
I have an MT03 with a full system Yoshimura exhaust system, would a power commander actually do anything to help the Air/fuel ratio, or do I need a Dyno tune?
Power Commander would be good, no need for dyno tune unless you want to
After mod installation and initial tune, do I have to retune after a certain amount of time or mileage?
No
If I were to have 2020 Yamaha Bolt with a Vance and Hines twin slasher exhaust with a Vance and Hines VO2 naked air intake, would I need to retune?
You would definitely want to re-tune the bike if you change the air cleaner, even if you left the stock exhaust on.
-Zack
what if you're just pulling the baffles out of your stock exhaust, is a retune necessary?
09 fxdc
If you pull your baffles out of your stock exhaust system, you will need to tune your motorcycle as the exhaust system will be much less restrictive than it was before. Keep in mind, an exhaust system without baffles is a little harder to tune than an exhaust system that is less restrictive but still has its baffles in place since back pressure created by the baffles tend to allow the exhaust system to breathe easier. -Luke
@@RevZilla if your going this route, would you suggest doing a new air intake then as well as the retune?
I have a Yamaha mt07, I just installed a full system on it, Do I need yo retune? Or what are My options?
You don't need to. But your motorcycle will run better with a flash
Ive got a 2015 street glide and im kicking around the idea of straight fish tail slip ons on the stock headpipes and stock breather do i need to remap or would it be fine
If you keep the stock headers and stock air cleaner, you should be fine keeping the stock tune. -DrewZilla
What if i add a TBR slip on to a rebel 300? No other mods to it. Would it need a retune? Would I be harming anything?
For just a slip-on, no, you don't need to retune, and you won't be harming anything. -DrewZilla
RevZilla ok just checking because it does delete the cat as well
Just bought a 2021 rebel 500 and i want more power and sound out of it. Any suggestions on getting the HP from 46 to the 60 range and torque from 33 to the 50 range. Bike weighs 414lbs soaking wet with a full tank so modding it to those numbers would make it incredible lol curious if this is possible and if so where can i bring it to have this done? Hopefully less than 2 grand
With my experience with a friend owning a rebel 500, he didn't own the bike long enough to justify spending money on it modifying it. You will eventually want something faster, as a rebel 500 is a pretty beginning bike. I'd save the money for a different bike rather than putting minds on it.
