Episode Transcription:
Crouch End is a trendy, mostly Victorian suburb of North London within the London borough of Haringey. It wraps itself around a confluence of ancient routes mainly postcoded under N8.
The name initially appears in 1465 Middle English records; ‘End’ referring to its outer proximity as a backwater, whilst ‘crouche’ referred to a wooden cross used as a signal post dividing the manor boundary which sat where the clock tower does now.
A one-bedroom property in this village of café culture is about 13 hundred per month. A second bedroom will take you up to about 1,500 pounds. For three bedrooms, you're looking at 2,500 grand.
For the outlay, you'll enjoy pretty period properties and beautifully commanding views across the capital of the City. The schools are of a high standard and the buzzing community of creatives will provide inspiration for work and play.
Pickled Pepper Books is a specialist children’s bookshop, cafe and events space established in 2012. On most weekends you can meet an author or illustrator or enjoy various theatre performances.
This 1895 built municipal clock tower stands up 63 feet inside the split of the broadway. It was designed in the Italian Renaissance style with all £1200 of it commemorating local benefactor Henry Williams who was key in shaping the district.
It formed a terminus for horse-drawn omnibuses and a drinking fountain, inset into its base, was heavily used by both people and horses when clean drinking water wasn't so easy to come by.
27 year old New Zealander, Reginald Uren beat 200 architects in a competition to design an assembly hall, as practical and non-flashy as they could. The prize of £150 went to him for the 1935 Hornsey Town Hall on the Broadway.
The building was declared surplus to requirements in 2000 and was placed on the 'at risk' register before a large sum of money had it grade listed. The site is currently being redeveloped, mostly into 135 flats by Hong Kong based property developers.
One could say, Crouch End’s biggest drawback has also cemented its charm for visitors and the 'Crouch Enders' who live here. It's never had an Underground station and has been viewed as a poor relation to the other nearby leafy districts because of it.
Former Salvation Army Hall (Music Palace) has been transformed into truly dynamic arts venue ArtHouse with the objective of challenging the status quo that divides cultures and instead wants to celebrate the modern diversity that reflects our lives and communities. They seek to attract a mixed audience where class, race, gender, sexuality and religion can be celebrated and discussed without inhibition.
Georgians Tennis Club is a family focused and friendly atmosphere using the best possible facilities for tennis at all levels. They run an academy with a performance programme for competitive players aged 7 - 18 years who wanna take their game to the next level and be the best they can be.
When the Muswell Hill and Crouch End train stations were born around the period of 1870, they gave each of their respective areas enough clout to section themselves off as districts, independent from Hornsey.
The railway line connecting the stations between Muswell Hill and Finsbury Park, ran trains successfully for 98 years. However, wear and tear took its toll on the intermediate bridges across the line and they collectively fell into a poor condition of disrepair which, in 1970, stopped this railway operation dead in its tracks.
Two years later, the station buildings met with the wrecking balls and the track was pulled away along with most of the platforms.
As of 1984, this disused railway space has been recycled into 2 and a half mile pedestrian and cycle route, Parkland Walk. By 1990, it was a nature reserve and then officially declared so, making it the longest one in London. If you shop in Tesco, those 10 and 15p's you use to buy bags, help to pay for this area's upkeep.
Lovely video! I first went there at the age of 3 in 1940, and we stayed for a while with my paternal grandparents at their home in Middle Lane. During the Battle of Britain we occasionally saw aircraft dog fights from the back garden, untilmy Grandma called us inside. Of course I have visited many times since then, and hope to go again after C19 restrictions end! I will always love Crouch End Thank you for sharing this video.
Sounds great!
I left London for the U.S. 13 years ago (Lee Green Native) never miss much about home until I watch these videos. It seems to make London more beautiful than I remember.
Glad you think so. Have you seen our Lee video?
Everything from your editing, shots, music, research and voice overs are so professional. Look forward to seeing more!
Wow, thank you!
Not sure how my heart can ache for someplace I've never been, but your videos seem to make it so. Excellent, as always.
This is a nice compliment - appreciated. Hope you get over there soon.
Exactly! My heart aches too.
Not the Crouch End that I lived in when it was buzzing with actors and musicians and the Church Studio's when Dave and Annie owned it
Great video and my home these days. A great place to live and will be home for many, many years to come. Even managed to get a on screen for all of 3 seconds
Ex Londoner here, these videos are great, thanks for making them. The park that you showed looks beautiful, as do many other London parks.
I cannot do anything but agree with you on that.
So glad you’re back mate. Interesting as always boss
Great to see you back. These are so informative!
Many more to come.
Thank you for saying so.
Absolutely love these, brilliant as always
John, appreciated. Ta.
your voice tone and method of narration is serine and relaxing. Continue your good job. Reza from Toronto
I used to live there a few years in the 90.Zdravim Avenue road.👋
This is exactly what I needed to see today. Thanks for sharing this valuable content!
Love these videos - your voice and choice of background music are so soothing 😊
Your music choice for the whole series is always melodic and on point. Love both.
What a nice neighboorhood. This feels like the real London to me. I've always loves the Northern Heights.
Informative, nice mood, and great music, as always. Cheers from Florida!
Blessings Timothy.
Good job - highly enjoyable!
Used to pass here on my way to Middlesex University at queensway ( now closed) ...always admired the area from the top of the double decker buses. Greetings from Barbados
Thanks for sharing Lee. Sounds like a good time in your life. Certain places are just pleasantly burnt into the memory. Hello Barbados!
Great video on the background of the architecture and parkland walks 👏
Thank you so much 😀
I've lived in Crouch End since 1988, longer by far than anywhere else I've ever lived.
Great video Dwayne! Like your music, photography and your voice. From your new subscribers from Las Vegas.
Thank you for watching and subbing!
So nice to see a video! what an interesting place. It's too bad about the railway system not ever coming to froition. The town itself looks like folks are out and about. Thank you for sharing this with us 😊👍👍👍
It's a lively place with lots to explore. Maybe they'll get a Tube station one day.
I went to highgate wood school in crouch end one of the best schools
With an Ofsted rating of GOOD, I can see why.
Just found your channel

Thank you! Will do!
I love Crouch End I wish I can live up there even though I live down the road in Holloway
Not the worst consolation.
I've now watched your videos on Peckham and this one. I live near one and visit the other a lot. Very different places but both 'very London'. Thanks for the info about the plastic bags!
Welcome back fam!
Yes fam, back in effect.
Thank you. 😊
Anytime!
London Districts 😊
stumbled upon your channel, Really well made! you've got a new Sub - keep up the good work
Welcome aboard!
Wow I love it video❤🙏
Always feel like I’m being judged when I’m there by the posh
Crouch end is a lovely area alongside Alexandra palace expensive to live round though.
Crouch End - also known as 'London's Creative Village" (due yo having one of teh highest population of people working in the creative industries or 'Nappy Valley' due to the large number of parents..
The price of a four bedroomed house is about a million and a half, so I imagine most 'creatives' can't afford to live here. Shame. We were lucky enough to buy here in 1992, but it's a pity that the area is now essentially unaffordable for young people.
Great job mate
Love the shop sign Dewyne. 😁
Kudos!
Ah just re watched and spotted Yeth on the cab. That's pretty cool.
What about Anita?
Absolutely fantastic work. Thank you. Ever plan to make it up to Enfield?
Cheers Michael. Yes I do plan to. Watch this space...
I'll look forward to the Enfield I was born bred and grew up there 👍
I use to go school in crouch end
It's a bit different to as I remember it from forty years ago when I worked out Veronese Decorative Plaster company on the main street.
Naturally. Hope you enjoyed the show.
An u do hackney please
Sure.
The music for this program is beautiful. Can you tell me the title and where I can buy it? I love it. Thanks
you missed out on seeing the 204 year old bakery!
I love insights like this, have you done a Muswell Hill one?
Not yet, but noted.
Can you do one on Colliers Wood?
Do a video on Streatham
Aye aye boss
Crouch end men
I found the music irritating and off-putting. Sorry.
The background music for John Rogers' psychogeography videos is an example of the opposite.
