I beeped my horn as you were doing the Darwin talk, sorry probably really annoying but I love your walks and got over excited 😂 I always wondered why you'd never done Crouchend. Ive moved home since then so great to watch my old neighbourhood. Great work 👏🏾
Stink pipes , hot doughnuts , zombies, Bob Dylan, a famous hoarder, chewing gum art .. and that’s only part of it and all on a single walk. The best London Guide channel by far.
I dated a girl from Crouch End for over a year, it was my introduction to London and watching this brought back many magical memories of lazy Saturday and Sunday afternoons pacing those paths. Very bitter sweet
Yippee you're back. I'm a Londoner who hasn't lived there for a long time - it's wonderful to see my old haunts again. Thank you so much. Love everything you do. We really enjoyed your film Take me to Pitcairn - everyone should watch it - it's brilliant.
The small garage in Topsfield Parade used to be a bicycle repair shop called Robert’s Rebuilds back in the 1970’s. We used to bring our bikes in there when we were kids. Brilliant memories.
I'm from Alabama but have been to London twice. I have a history degree and love british history but even i didn't know how much history was truly around me until watching your videos. Love your stuff, UP THE JOOLZ!
What a treat, a Joolzy on a Sunday afternoon. Funnily enough I've just relocated back to London and went to Crouch End via Highgate recently. Excellent review, wish I'd known the detail before I went, would have made my walk all the more poignant. As an aside, was in Jackson Lane theatre to see Ricky Gervais's comedy warm up shows, great little place. I really like Highgate.
This Crouch End area looks very original indeed, Joolz. All the older buildings look as good as the day they were built, with many small traditional businesses still intact. The place has also been swarming with musicians and actors too, in the past. What a terrific part of London this appears to be. Many thanks for this video.
Woke up to a Joolz Guide! Fantastic! That Crouch End looks like a great place to live. Love the small shops (bakers, butchers), lovely old buildings, and artsy flair the area has. Thanks so much for bring us here Joolz!
'Joolz Guide' is, without doubt, the best video entertainment and 'see for yourself, guides available. It must take a lot of planning to to organise, record and present. It goes without saying, how appreciated this is by the viewers. "Joolz, you are brilliant. Please, please keep this very informative, interesting and historic masterclass, coming.
Good to hear from you after about a month's silence! This Crouch End edition is terrific - your bouncy attitude makes it fun (as always). Keep well, Dave
Nice London History Walks and Travel Films. From Highgate Station to Crouch End, parkland walk, Bob Dylan, Eurythmics, Trumpton and the usual array of weird facts, sculpture of Charles Darwin, Banners, the chewing gum painter, the Boogaloo, and my favourite bakery Dunn's. Lotus car's first showroom, Hornsey St Mary's church tower. All of these things...I enjoyed watching. Tnx4sharing full watched.
Very nostalgic I was born in 1946 whilst parents living in Avenue Rd moved to Birchington Rd in 1951 lived in our family home till 1967 when I married and left all those memories in Crouch End. Mum continued to live there till 1976 when she downsized to Hertfordshire what great memories thanks Joolz
That bottle of HP Sauce set on the shelf with the other condiments at Bob Dylan's table takes me back when growing up and having it on the table for eggs, etc. Thanks, Joolz.
What a rather splendid video! Actually, one of my favorites, and I've never heard of Crouch End - though now, of course, I must go. And particularly to Dunn's bakery. This video seemed particularly walk-y in a good way. So much interesting history covered! First rate jokes, too! Thanks, Joolz.
It`s a wonder Joolz that Netflix or Amazon don`t make you a offer because your video`s are first class, and as always this video was both informative and a pleasure to watch... love it! ❤❤
Quality mate i grew up in crouch end in the 60s-70s-80s& part of the 90s , as a child it was idilic place to live I lived in a block of flats in crescent rd a naibour gave me his old tent & sleeping bag, so during the summer holidays me & my mate who lived on the corner of Coleridge rd , camp out by our-selfs back in 1970, we decided to go for a walk through crouch end bye the clock tower which proceeded to strike midnight 🕛 there was no one about not even a car it was dead quiet, as a eight year old it was the best thing going, being up so late, terrific days, loved your video brought back many happy memories 👍all the best John Duffy
These videos are just the tonic,a nice bun ,mug of coffee,my pug who snores far too loudly beside me. After watching each video i get that lovely warm feeling that an Ealing comedy gives it makes this country seem warm and cosy.
Joolz! I love all your videos! This one about Crouch End was most meaningful as I had the opportunity to live in this area many years ago, as I was an exchange university student from the U.S.A. I have many fond memories of London and I can listen to your wonderful stories and humour all day. Thank you for your tours and keen insights into London history!
Brilliant! Thanks Joolz for another fabulous stroll through London. Love Crouch End and everything you showed us! Keep up the wonderful walks! Cheers!!
Thanks for the memory of Mr Trebus - bless him and may he rest in.peace. Crouch End looks like a cool place to visit and I feel that I.put on a stone who you bisited Dunn's Bakery.

Always get a little buzz of joy when I see the Joolz video suggestion is actually brand new! Sunday night here, perfect way to forget about tomorrow morning! Also, back in the late 90s I worked on Sean Hughes show (the Irish comedian) on BBC Radio London (GLR). He lived in Crouch End and I went up and we got drunk one Sunday afternoon at the Kings Head with a couple of friends. However, I lived in Rotherhithe and had absolutely no idea how get home on a Sunday night! Took me hours!
I loved this wonderful video. In March 1940, at the age of 3, my Dad and Mum and my sister went tolive with my paternal grandparents at 38, Middle Lane. I have been associated with the area ever since then and love it very much. I even remember my Grandma calling us in from the back garden one Sunday during the Battle of Britain, where my sister and I had been following the flight of aircraft in the south eastern sky above, by the sound of their gunfire. Did you know that, during the 1950s, the King of Skiffle, Lonnie Donegan, also lived in Middle Lane, a few doors away from my grandparents. Thank you for the video. It is on my bucket list to visit Crouch End again, as soon as I am able. It is like home to me.
Hi Joolz, this is superb. The best thing I ever did was move into this area. The Earl Haig Hall has that artillery weather vane because it used to be our local Royal British Legion club. RBL sold it to a chain of pubs who treated the interior with great respect by keeping it as it was, replete with military regalia and memorabilia but making it a live venue which seemed successful as it was popular. However, it's now a nursery which reminds me of Crouch End's other recent nicknames of Creche End or Nappy Valley; synonymous with yummy mummies.
Loved this one especially! The visit to the doughnut shop and the notes about the acupuncturist were lovely, as well as the Save The Clock Tower reference 😁
Love Crouch End. My dad lived on Inderwick Road, you could see Ally Pally in the distance from his back garden. His next door neighbour was Neneh Cherry’s sister!
His local was a pub called Dick’s Bar, long gone I think. Sure it’s an electrical shop now. We also used to go to Park Road pool and jump off the high board!
Sigh…I lived in Crouch End (Avenue Road) until I moved to Hong Kong in 1993. I remember Banner’s opening - was beyond cool then. ,made me pretty wistful - one thing you missed was the “Peep Show” intro with all the Televisions was filmed next to the old town hall you featured.
I also lived in Crouch End for years, and I too was waiting for the Peep Show reference where they look in to the TV/Electrical appliance shop...thanks for the tour though, seeing this has made me miss the place
havnt seen a joolzey in a while. this was lovely. enjoyed it on a sunny sunday morning here in USA. ill back home in lon don in a few weeks. totally getting me in the sppirits. thanks simon and co.
Great stuff Jools.. a Crouch end vlog was well Overdue from your good self. That tiny building in middle lane mews was also a bicycle repair shop called roberts rebuilds In the 80’s. Also you had a pint in the queens at the end of the video. Have you seen love honor & obey?... A few scenes were filmed-outside there including Jude Law bowling down topsfield parade at the beginning of the film.. Keep up the good work joolz 👍
Thank you for the wonderful video. Heck, now realising how much I miss my time in and around Crouch End (1984-1992). Used to work at the Trades Union Congress National Education Centre (was Hornsey Art College now the school). Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox recorded at the Church Studio at that time too. There was a small cafe opposite run by an actress from the 50/60s - her name escapes me. Dunn's - best bakery for miles. The King's Head pub comedy nights were amazing. Saw many a good turn there....lots of whom became quite famous. Stink pipes....I live in Sheffield now where the stink pipes were shorter and topped off with gas lamps becoming "sewer gas destruction lamps". As an aside....actor Martin Clunes lived in a flat in Crouch End when he was with his first wife - early 90s. I've never been able to pinpoint where though.
What a terrific video. I lived in Wood Green for a couple of years but never thought to go and visit Crouch End, which was very incurious of me I know. I now have a deep craving for Mississippi Mud Pie and to visit that restaurant. However, I now also have the perfect excuse to visit as I saw a pub with one of my best friends surname on it, The Maynard Arms. As you know, never go past a pub with your name on it!
Love watching these videos and wonder if you would ever make one of my old stomping ground, Plaistow. I wonder what history could be uncovered. I was led to believe that The Black Lion pub on Plaistow High Street was frequented by Dick Turpin back in the day.
Can’t wait to visit for the first time at the end of the month. Your videos have been such a massive help with all my planning! You’re so lovely to watch! 💕✨
I loved this one, this is my neighbourhood. Knew a lot,and learned alot more. Loved the now and then photos. I walk the Topsfield Prde daily, and often look up a the fornics and old building and shop signs, especially going towards the Tottenham Lane end. Lovely review of Dunns Bakery, being going there since I was 4yrs old with my mum, the look has changed, but the taste still Reigns Supreme 36+yrs on.This video was excellent, even more so because it was very personal to me. It's already generated so much conversation in our house. Thank you and keep up the superb work💯💕👍🏾
25:50 I think that building opposite the clock tower used to be a Lyons cafe where at 5 years old, I tried my first mustard. Despite my mother and grandmother cautioning me not to, I took a ruddy great spoonful and have loved Hot English Mustard ever since.
Nice little tour. You took me down my walk to school from Highgate Station to Shepherds Hill School in 1968. Not much seems to have changed, although I suspect that Mrs. Hamberger, my singing teacher, whose house was virtually next to the station, has long departed this world.
Very intesting video. Nice to see Crouch End, I know it well. Not far from Wood Green where my family and I lived. My mums mum worked for the GPO in Crouch End. Two members of my family owned a greengrocers in Crouch End.
@@edboss36 There are more shops now because the mall previously known as shopping city was built. The Barton's Department store was destroyed by a fire, BHS was built on the site which itself has gone too. Sainsbury's was in the High Road and you got served over the counter. Marks and Spencers in the High Road closed a few years ago as did the CO OP department store. The railway station above the High Road closed in the 1960s. There have been a lot of flats built. When I was born in 1959 trolley buses were still in service. I was taken home from Middlesex Hospital in Central London where I was born to Wood Green on a Trolley Bus. The crime rate is high and there are lots of gangs now.
Great video. When you were at the building which was Mountview. I lived in the building next to it which was Ivor Court and also home to Rik Gunnell in 1962/3 who ran the infamous Flamingo Nightclub in the West End - he was a character!
Yet another fantastic London walk conducted by Joolz in area I am very familiar with, he really does pull out all the interesting historical titbits which Londoners just take for granted (or aren't aware off!).. Pip Pip Tally Ho yet another fantastic show!!
A super video. I lived in Crouch End in the early 1970s, in a bed-sitter the size of a shoe box. I never realised there were so many interesting things to know about Crouch End. Thank you Joolzy.
Bringing my two teenager granddaughters for a week in London this August. I have been binge watching your videos, trying to get some ideas of places to see. Thank you so very much for all of the wonderful information
I love this one as I'm from Hornsey many years back. My mum was the wages clerk for Colin Chapman at the original Lotus company in the little old garage in Tottenham Lane when they were there. You must definitely make a film about Hornsey! keep up the good work.
Your walks videos were a huge source of comfort for me during g the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 when we were so limited in what we could do. I beleive that I watched all of them, and I would happily watch them again because they are so bloody engaging and fun. Keep it up and I'll make sure to tell my future kids and grandkids about you
Happiest days of my life growing up in Crouch End in the Seventies. Good to see you passed by corner of West in Park and Nelson Road where I lived 😊❤️💯
Joolz. I'm a big fan, been watching your videos for ages. I work in the Bull in Highgate. If you're ever in the area, do stop by and I'd be honoured to pour you a pint (on the house of course). Keep up the good work!
So good to see you made it to Crouch End. Hornsey has so much history and would make up a whole video on its own. Such a brilliant area, I loved living there but as with most of London - way too expensive now💔

Maybe the double stink pipes prevent the local kids from climbing the trees?
No. John Rogers. Sorry.
In the trade they are called Stench pipes and that was pre "Carry on Spying"...

Marks and Spencers in the High Road closed a few years ago as did the CO OP department store. The railway station above the High Road closed in the 1960s. There have been a lot of flats built. When I was born in 1959 trolley buses were still in service. I was taken
home from Middlesex Hospital in Central London where I was born to Wood Green on a Trolley Bus. The crime rate is high and there
are lots of gangs now.
Great video. When you were at the building which was Mountview. I lived in the building next to it which was Ivor Court and also home to Rik Gunnell in 1962/3 who ran the infamous Flamingo Nightclub in the West End - he was a character!
Another wonderful, interesting and hugely fun video. Thanks and please keep posting.
Love that splendid Jacket Joolz.
Brilliant.learnt so much about some of the great stars of music from this video.still one 9f the best RUclips channels out there.
Such a wonderful treat!
No way! Lotus, that's so cool
wonderful video, so enjoyable and fun with so many great connections and even better doughuts!
Great vid as always. Thanks!
Your walks videos were a huge source of comfort for me during g the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 when we were so limited in what we could do. I beleive that I watched all of them, and I would happily watch them again because they are so bloody engaging and fun. Keep it up and I'll make sure to tell my future kids and grandkids about you
5:29 THIS is why I've been watching for 2.5 years ❤
Happiest days of my life growing up in Crouch End in the Seventies.
Good to see you passed by corner of West in Park and Nelson Road where I lived 😊❤️💯
Thank you Jools another captivating film I’m looking forward to the next one already
Joolz. I'm a big fan, been watching your videos for ages. I work in the Bull in Highgate. If you're ever in the area, do stop by and I'd be honoured to pour you a pint (on the house of course). Keep up the good work!
5:08 Love the Tag on tunnel wall - Lamb Shanks !
Lovely, I spent 8 years walking about this area, was nice to live there.
Thank you for your tour and explanation.
Walked both ways to Finchley Park and opposite way to Alexander Palace . Lovely walk xxx
Splendid walk Joolz! Cheers.
Thank you for sharing. It's wonderful and informative. I already visited this place in August 2023 but you gave a lot of very interesting insights.
I stayed in Crouch End a few weeks ago for four days--great place. We had a great dinner at the Maynard Arms.
A Joolz vid - a rare treat! ❤️❤️❤️
So good to see you made it to Crouch End. Hornsey has so much history and would make up a whole video on its own. Such a brilliant area, I loved living there but as with most of London - way too expensive now💔
So cool to see Shane McGowan and Phil Lynott in the same clip
Super tour -ta, and great to see Banner's still in action (one of John Peel's faves, I believe).
well that was a lovely walk from my couch in Toronto, thank you Joolz. 😉
Couch End?
