    I use both JLCPC and PCBWay. For cheap prototypes and stuff customers are not going to see, use JLCPCB. If I want a good looking board to show a customer, it’s PCBWay.
    My biggest gripe with JLCPCB is their Fr4 boards have writing on them that shows once the board is finished. Also, the printing scratch’s off easily. The black matt from PCBWay seems to take the silkscreen better and I have not had any issues with it.
    Just my take, others may have different experiences.

      What is this text you're referring to? Something on the raw board material that shows through the solder mask? I've never seen that on the boards I've ordered from there.

    • @sdgelectronics

      @@sdgelectronics No, i think it is a brand mark on the FR4. When the unwanted copper is etched away, it becomes visible even through the solder mask. It is a NP like joined together.

    JLC changed it around mid 2019, they used to offer gloss or matte black but half way through one of my orders they changed it to this silk type black! And it just became "black" in the order menu, I quite like it, marks less easily.

  • @JohnJTraston

    Hmmm... I did a few black custom Arduino shields 3-4 years back with PCBWay and they were really really glossy and I didn't have any issues remove any flux after manual soldering.

  • @SidneyCritic
    @SidneyCritic 3 года назад

    I would say PCBW matt, JLC satin finish.
    With my Deoxit flux I have to kero first, IPL, then strong surface spray detergent, to get the waxiness off it.

  • @azyfloof
    @azyfloof 3 года назад +1

    Until such time as either manufacturer changes the type of black you get :P
    I remember a while ago Seon from Unexpected Maker had issues tryna clean the black PCBs from JLC cause they were so impossibly mat. I expect the surface finish is slightly porous so it absorbs the flux/cleaning residue

    • @station240
      @station240 3 года назад +1

      Seon found recently JLCPCB changed the black yet again.
      I've gotten two different shades of Green PCBs from PCBWay, but otherwise they seem consistent.

    Nice, thanks for comparing, Does PCBWay surprise you with a customs duty invoice a month after you received your boards like JLCPCB does, or do you pay them right off the bat at the time of order? it is really annoying that JLC does not include this in the cost of the shipping.

    • @sdgelectronics
      @sdgelectronics  3 года назад

      JLCPCB offer two DDP shipping options which means all duty is paid at checkout. PCBWay don't offer this yet unless you have a FedEx or DHL account

    • @patprop74
      @patprop74 3 года назад +1

      Well, that's different lol See I'm in Canada and I have never seen such an option and I always use FedEx, and about a month after my boards come in I get an imported invoice, and i don't even have an account with FedEx it's just what is easier to deal with.

  • @Minifig666

    Thanks for the comparison! I've seen issues on matte soldermask with the silkscreen crumbling off, usually pretty evident with a fingernail scratch. Out of interest have you seen that from either of these suppliers? Would like to use some matte black boads for front panels so it would be nice to get some tough silkscreening!

    • @sdgelectronics
      @sdgelectronics  3 года назад +1

    Any difference in cleaning performance using flux remover instead of simple IPA? Modern fluxes just aren’t fully soluble in IPA.

    • @sdgelectronics

    I was surprised to find that the shininess of PCB is actually a factor in any decision for which one to go for. In fact, it's not even abt shininess. It's gone to the level of which is less or more matt. What.. LOL. I guess non-beggars can be choosers. Besides, the pads on one of the boards are consistently non-consistent in size. That should be the point of any comparison IMO.

    Hi. With JLCPCB I had a quality issue with noticeable imperfections in the black solder mask layer, as if the coating has thickened unevenly on the surface: i.imgur.com/k84Ox2q.jpg - They said it's a known problem in the "exposure process" for black boards, and that they can't make sure it won't happen again... Have you ever experienced this issue?

    I don't want to waste anymore time talking about it. You should see my order list. One after another of "failed audits. Please resend gerbers". Other boardhouses read my gerbers just fine. JLC just kept saying, "Failed Audit".
    If you're a boardhouse and you don't do vias.... you better hang it up. You should at least have the common courtesy to put it on your site, "Apologies, even though we are a PCB manufacturer, we don't do vias."
