I remember watching this video 13 years ago and falling in love with viking and epic metal, f*ck yeah!!! My favourites are Thyrfing, Falkenbach, Moonsorrow, Ensiferum and Turisas.

Also, to the previous poster, Enslaved, like Bathory, have played both viking metal and black metal at different times in their history.
It's important to know metal history! This is one of the things that show that metal is something important, better than pop ecc. Especially when a band change style, it's important to know when and why. Metal history don't has to become a drug, just to be informated ;)
Nice to see Windir at the top. And, of course Amon Amarth is viking lol, if they're not viking metal, I don't know who the hell is :D Why can't a band be both viking and melodeath metal? Viking themes are in the lyrics, and the term "melodic death" describes the instrumental part of the band's work.
That's because that song come from 1988, when viking metal didn't exist. It was just HIM, Quorthon that created it, especially with the album Hammerheart (1990)
It's a subgenre of black metal whitch basically always have screaming vocals. However the "vikingmetal screaming" is atmospheric and it creates this special norse mood and sometimes pain.

These viking metal bands(I'm talking only about viking metal bands, not pagan overall) are very nice, but I think instead of talking about norse mythology histories, they could teach values about the Asatrú and show the religion, not the mythology. Yes, mythology is cool as well but when some people hear about mythology tales they think that it is an old thing, a past thing. Asatrú has not died !

I agree with sharing central asatru vales but your not going to learn or speak of asatru without being introduced to norse myths. They are one in a way.

Why do people insist this isn't an actual subgenre? I believe there is Viking Metal and even Viking Folk Metal (much of Tyr for example is covered traditional tunes). I would say there are even more sub-subgenres.
