For a lot of people, the JBL Bar 9.1 will open the door into high-performance cinema. This includes everything you’ll need for an immersive Dolby Atmos experience without breaking the bank. The first thing you’ll notice is the smart design of this wireless surround-sound system. As a package of 4 pieces bundled together, you get a soundbar with two wireless rechargeable rear-speakers plus a wireless subwoofer. All the pieces in this bundle have matching rounded edges and a graphite finish that has just the right amount of sheen for a nice modern look.
The Bar 9.1 is designed to sit under your TV or it can be wall-mounted. We think most people will probably just position this on top of a piece of furniture underneath their TV, and the rear-speakers on top of tables or even a pair of stands in the rear of the room. The rear-surrounds are wireless and rechargeable. So, when it’s time to charge them, they dock into the magnetic charging-stations on the sides of the bar, and in about 3 hours they’ll be ready for 10 hours of playtime! With the rear-speakers attached, the bar spans 47-inches wide. But, when you remove these, the bar spans just shy of 35-inches long. Visually, this will look great with TVs that are 43-inches or more.
The Bar 9.1 is a 9-channel surround-sound system that comes with a single sub bass channel - hence the numbers in the name “Bar 9.1.” We’ll break down what all these numbers and channels really mean and why this is cool. But first, let’s talk about that subwoofer. The size of the wireless sub makes the biggest statement in this system. The subwoofer stands a little over 17-inches tall, 12-inches wide, and 12-inches deep. It weighs in at 24 ½ pounds because there’s a massive 10-inch down-firing transducer housed inside the unit that will deliver deep floor-shaking low-end. To present sound across a full-range of frequencies, JBL uses an array of drivers to present sound from 34Hz to 20KHz with a maximum SPL of 103dB. JBL doesn’t provide a plus or minus point on the 34Hz, so we’re not sure if the sub really gets that low, but it sure feels like it! Three front-facing speakers provide the horizontal left, center, and right channels while four height-channels fire sound up to the ceiling for that top-to-bottom sense of vertical elevation. Then, JBL goes the extra mile by giving you two more surround-sound channels in the rear-speakers. So, when the rear-surround speakers are placed in the back of your room, you’ll be completely immersed in a 9-channel “bubble” of 3D sound!
From talking with our customers, we know how excited people are getting about Dolby Atmos. People want better sound than their TV speakers can provide. And as television and movies start to prioritize Dolby Atmos and streaming, this trend is the future. However, not everyone has the space for an entire system of separate speakers and a home theater receiver, so it’s really cool to see how far some of these high-performance soundbars have come. Soundbars are more mobile and affordable than a full surround-sound installation, and while not quite the same, there are a few of them that can offer a comparable sound.
For less than $1,000, JBL gives you the whole Atmos experience complete with a soundbar, a subwoofer, plus rear-speakers. When you compare this with other systems, it stands out as a total package for the money. Similar systems might include a sub, but the rears are usually optional add-ons and more expensive after you expand some of these other systems. At this price point, we like that there’s no extra wires or extra power connections needed. The battery-powered rear-surrounds are not only convenient, they added more to the experience without having to spend any extra money. They did a nice job recreating the elevation in our soundstage, but it was the exhilarating bottom-end weight from the sub that over-delivered on performance.

I think I'm going to get this, I currently don't have a surround sound set up, so looking at options. I definitely like being able to adjust the volume of the rear surround speakers. Wonder if there's a place near me where I can sample the sound.

At last JBL listens to customers. Atmos at last! Thanks
I bought this soundbar 2 weeks ago. Gaming (CoD) is so damn immersive and the 10" woofer just shreds. Streaming via Chrome cast via Spotify: this system is so damn impressive! At audio level 18 I feel like I'm at a club because of the large sub and my family room is about 500sqft. So far I absolutely love this soundbar despite only having an Arc HDMI port.
Damn that’s awesome! I’m thinking about getting this for gaming, have you had any issues ?
Movies? Rears problems? Atmos
since the detachable speakers are connected by bluetooth, isn't there any sound lag from those rear speakers?
@@predatorcanine that's a good question.. i bought a JBL soundbar a while ago and with Bluetooth it has a lag .. sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not.. so annoying
How’s this as compared to JBL 800 pro ??

Nice videos and very informative! Can do video for citation multibean 700 soundbar? And some comparison to other soundbar to the citation soundbar?
Greetings Ang! Thank you for saying that friend. We are so glad our content is helpful. For every review we do, there are dozens of products we don't put out videos on. In other words, we simply don't waste people's time with reviews and comparisons on products we don't believe in. We may do something in the future, but as of right now, we don't have any plans to compare that soundbar. On the other hand, we just released a 2020 best soundbar comparison: www.audioadvice.com/videos-reviews/2020-best-soundbars/ - For that comparison, we listened to a lot of soundbars before we finally concluded which ones belonged on our list of best high-performance soundbars of 2020. Glad you enjoyed the review!
I returned the JBL 9.1, only had it for 4 hours, went back in the box. This JBL in no way compares to any Sonos speakers. I ended getting the Sonos ARC and Sub. The JBL is noticeably inferior in all aspects, the sound is muffled, no treble, and did not connect to my WiFi at all. I was so disappointed in this JBL. Maybe I had a bad unit, not sure. When my wife, who is not a sound audiophile like myself, said “ you think that sounds good?” I was trying to like it, but it was so disappointing that I knew I was packing it up. I have a JBL onBeat Rumble that sounds 10 times than this JBL sound bar.
@@itsmermf I had the exact same experience with the 5.1 version a few years ago. Except mine went back in the box after 20 minutes. Given the raves I read about it, I assumed it was my hearing. But to me it sounded AWFUL. Tinny, hollow sound like a tin can. My theory is that people fall in love with the subwoofer, which overpowers the entire thing. Without that it is horrible. I got a Sony and the sound was immediately better.
@@mrsj1417 Does the Sony you got compare in terms of subwoofer?
@@itsmermf Did you calibrate the system to your room before testing? or did it even sound bad after that? i agree, people get all hyped with loud bass...

Im thinking of selling my 5.1 jbl bar and getting this one. Is it worth the upgrade?

I think not, the rear speakers has to be charged every 10 hours? Eventually will need to charge them more often, maybe a movie or two? It’s pain in the butt! No offense but this is a very dumb idea for even considering it.

got it today, 28 nov 20, after the connection eARC/ARC experimentation, time to sit and enjoy F1 Bahrain Grand Prix. Folks, I was not watching the race, I am in it! The Left Rear speaker conveys amazing surround, Atmos fires everywhere. Amazing for my first ever lifetime surround. Oh wait, the Rear Right kept blinking slowly white, meaning 'disconnected' from the bar. Never saw it connected. Found a few disconnect forums, nothing to suggest a worse situation than Samsung. I avoided the Samsung precisely due to such connection issues... But not, JBL 9.1 RR never connects. 1000$ with Extended BB warranty? no thank you...RR never connects = automatic 0 stars if I could...

@@AudioAdvice Their support were helpful and acknowledged the issue and got it refunded. Here's their response:
I am really sorry to inform you that sadly, the issue which you are facing, where when you try adjusting the rear speaker's level, causing the display to say "NOT SUPPORTED" is being caused by the soundbar thinking that the detachable speakers are still attached to the soundbar.
This issue can sadly not be fixed by a software update, and requires the soundbar to be repaired at a service center.
Well done, makes me want one
Can I use this for a 5.1 channel movie will it transfer to the two rear speakers
Yes. It's actually a true 5.1 device.
Great review I got the jbl soundbar 9.1 with 820 watt its mind-blowing very good sound bar. I compared with other soundbar for me 1 of the best. I got early the 5.1 jbl soundbar with 550 watt that's was great too but I am really looking forward to go bigger and then this was the best purchase I had done
Where does it stand compared to Bose soundbar 700 and sub?
The bar 9.1 is an absolute beast its gives atmos , dts , bluetooth 5.1 , chromecast , airplay 2 , 100 percent wireless system and almost all top notch features under 1000 dollars

Can the rear speakers be used in a separate room for music? Not with a second source but in a party environment where people may be in other rooms?
Hey Wesley! Yes they can be used in a separate room as long as they are close enough for the wireless connection to reach. We would recommend placing both of the rears in the same room though so you still get both the left and right channels! Don't buy 9.1 sound bar , its bass system is zero . Don't buy it . Buy 5.1 which us better . 9.1 is waste of money . JBL sound quality for 9.1 is zero . Having both system 5.1 bar is superb & 9.1 is garbage
Thats not what any reviews online say.
Thanks JARED LETO for this awesome reviews 😅

Type A connection ?
Bluetooth - version 4.x ?
This is stupid, you have to detach the speakers, move them to their spot then sit back down. Then you have to move them back to charge.. they should’ve just done rears like Samsung and it would’ve sold better.
It is a bit of extra work, but it does let you put the speakers exactly where they perform best and not be limited to where you have AC outlets. There are trade-offs to both approaches. Thanks for watching
@@AudioAdvice if they had an optional power cord option. Then it would a quirky feature.
@@polishdude001 Simon that is a great idea. Thanks
Ok, dumb question. How does one hook up Direct TV to this? The sound bar has two ports, one from bar to tv, second says to blue ray. Where does the HDMI cable from the Direct TV box go?
You could use the Blu-ray port. Or connect all your sources to the TV and use arc or e-arc to get the audio to the bar. Thanks for watching
This isn’t a 9.1 channel system. It’s 5.1.4
