Finally snagged one of these. Thank you for this review which put this on my radar to compare to Samsung Q90r (7.1.4) & Nakamichi Shockwafe (7.2.4) set. This appealed to me more due to (1) quality of sound coming from a real speaker company; (2) easier setup and (3) the true wireless rear surrounds. I don't like exposed cables in between furniture and with pets that like to chew up and pull on cables this works out too. Additionally I avoided all the wimpy Bass soundbars like Vizio and most of the Sonos type setups. They just lack the "oomph" and barely tickled me with and their lows. I tested a few different ones at home just to be sure and highly recommend other folks to do the same. Your space matters when it comes to properly having the output and the necessary Decibels to "feel" your movies and tunes. My previous JBL 3.1 system lasted just over a decade before finally getting fried by a surge. Thanks again and I will be recommending folks your way.
Well the Samsung soundbars are made by Harmon Kardon which is one of the top speaker companies out there, and JBL is owned by Harman. But yea i def agree with you for some reason the Samsung Harman Kardon soundbars def lack bass, the quality of the bass is good but as you stated doesnt have enough oomph, due to the subs lower wattage 6-8 inch subwoofers. I had bought the Samsung HW-Q60T, the quality of the sound was really good and it had great features but i returned it cuz of the wimpy bass as you put it, the sub was only 160 watts with a 6.5 inch speaker. I then went with the JBL bar 5.1 Surround which has a 300 watt 10 inch sub and im much happier, it booms. The only con about it so far is the lack of sound modes and EQ adjustments, you can only adjust the bass, but the one mode they give you is def good enough for me to like it, and for music i just use the EQ in Spotify so that solves that problem.
Hi,i have right now the jbl 3.1 soundbar, and i was thinking to change with this one,9.1 bar. Please, tell me,only in terms of low bass, what is the difference between those two? They have the same 10 inch driver on subwoofer, the same dimmensions for the enclosure. It is any differences?
how do you like the JBL 9.1? I am beating myself up over what soundbar to go with. I have 13ft ceilings and an "open floor plan" so I'm not sure what type of system is best for this application. Upfiring speakers, or software based virtual atmos like on the Sony HT-z9f. Currently consider the Sony Z9F, JBL 9.1, Samsung Q90R, or the Nakamichi 7.2.4. I just can't get over the looks of the Nakamichi...it just looks cheap to me even though I know it puts out good sound.
Cool, this time you got right how the rear satellites need to be positioned! Don't know why JBL choosed not to give us more control on the subwoofer, on the old 3.1 and 5.1(with satellites) systems you could set the woofer volume from 0 to 30, that was awesome because if you watched something at night you could even lower the sub to 0 or whatever you liked!
The first bar I received was faulty. Couldnt keep connection to the rear speakers, the sound kept changing between stereo and surround when the rear speakers was docked to the soundbar. The sound crackled. The calibration kept failing. The JBL support wasnt any help at all. I desided to return the soundbar to my retailer. JBL felt bad for all the trouble I had and sent me a 20% voucher which I used to buy a second JBL 9.1 bar. I have now tested the second bar a few days and it has worked flawlessly. I am happy I gave JBL a second chance, because man, that bar has awsome sound. And with the money saved on the second bar, thats a good investment.

Nice review. The jbl bar 5.1 received many negative reviews concerning the quality of musical reproduction (warmth of music, mids etc). Is it any better with the 9.1 bar?
I feel the same about my Bar 3.1 as well. The music reproduction sounds metallic and hollow. The saving grace is the sub woofer. Play the same bass tracks on the Polk magnifi max and you will realize how powerfull the JBL is although the sound is not very good
What I read about sound quality is that music sound quality not being great. So I guess is hasn't improved. But I don't have one so can't confirm personally.
@@augustya7543 The answer is no. The JBL 10 inch woofer crushes my house. The MagniFi Max can not compare in that area. The Bar bar 3.1 sound is... hollow and metallic but the BASS CRUSHES. The Polk is more warm and "loud natural overall" sounding to me. I can compare AG 7 Rings, GM I get the Bag and La Roux Going in for the Kill Scream rmx and there is a huge difference in bass. The 9.1 has the same sub as 3.1 so hopefully the bar itself has better sound quality overall. The difference in BASS is tremendous
I hope to buy this soon! I have the other one with wireless rear speakers but without Dolby atmos.and I am very satisfied with it! Is too expensive in this moment....next year perhaps!!!!!!

Hello, I am looking to buy the JBL Bar 9.1 but I want to know if I put a Fire tv stick 4k in the 'HDMI in' of my soundbar and connect a projector through 'HDMI (eARC)' out of my soundbar to 'HDMI in (without ARC/eARC)' of my projector and use netflix on my Fire stick, will it show atmos support for supported content? Please reply. This is greatly going to influence my purchase decision.
I have an LG SM8600 TV with ARC on HDMI 2. This soundbar says can passthrough 4K Dolby Vision, will my TV be able to receive Dolby Vision over ARC in my TV and eARC in the JBL soundbar?
Thanks for your question. There is no center channel level adjustment in the Sound Settings menu. Switching from Smart Mode to Standard Mode may improve the center channel effect.
I am planning to buy jbl bar 9.1 with my mi tv 4x 65 inch tv. But I don't know whether mi tv will support the atmos with hdmi arc. Can you help me out?
Thanks for your question. Upon initial setup, there is a Sound Calibration procedure that measures sound output from all channels and adjusts as needed. There are also two sound modes: Standard Mode and Smart Mode. Smart Mode automatically varies sound output and surround effects based upon the program. Standard Mode provides more consistent output for enhanced dialog and front channel output. The owner's manual provides specific instructions for Sound Calibration and explains Standard and Smart modes.
Bob Morawski No... But I’ve heard that both of them come with Micro-USB ports as well, for charging. I’m not 100% sure if this is true, but I’ve heard this from multiple individual sources
@@scarecrow_9595 that’s a deal breaker right there. No battery last forever. Once the batteries in that thing finally die you’re going to be left with a paper weight. Why would anyone in their right mind but something like that?

Question, am interested in this JBL 9.1 with detachable speakers, my question is that I hear the charge at times will last an hour or two instead of ten at full charge, anyone have this issue ?
Hi. Thank you for the review. 2 questions if you could respond: 1 how does it sound compared to Bose 700 soundbar plus bass module? 2 will the battery last long period. I have seen some reviews challenging the battery life and also it charges only on standby mode.
Thanks for your question. The JBL Bar 9.1 is designed specifically to improve the sound and provide surround sound effects from any flat-panel TV with typically poor sound from compromised built-in speakers. You will find it a vast improvement over your TV sound.
World Wide Stereo Its great i got 9.1 just i dont feel on netflix 5.1 movies i dont hear enough rear speakers (calibration is done).. just i feel like movies dont have surround sounds
Very similar, but half the price. Plus, the JBL rears are Atmos (upward firing) unlike the current Sonos rears. It’s actually a 5.1.4 system. JBL did some weird marketing gimmick and added numbers together... front L/R - center - rear L/R (5), a subwoofer (.1), and four upwards firing atmos speakers (.4). They added the 5 and 4 to make 9. Then added the subwoofer. To end up with 9.1. I think many customers are generally confused with the new period at end with regard to Atmos.
Great questions, Anders! A direct comparison is challenging given the differences in features. The JBL Bar 9.1 is a full-featured surround system: Atmos front and rear, full 9.1 capability, and JBL sound and power for enveloping surround effects. The Sonos models include streaming capability for additional Sonos speakers throughout your home.
@@A.H-bricks I just did. The 9.1 arrived today. My decision was based on overall cost. I also just got a Sony 900H 85 inch tv and a very pricey cabinet beneath it. I can only justify cost so far...
If you have the space and money for a receiver and speakers go with them, no bar will be able to beat a dedicated Atmos/DTS-X system with ceiling speakers!!
@@goodluckkarashani1711 reciever is the brains to the speakers. Its where the speakers plug into for power and adjustments. Same idea that your subs in a car needs an amplifier
Thanks for your question. The built-in Wi-Fi is limited to streaming content like Chromecast and AirPlay 2. It connects to a TV via a wired HDMI/ARC connection or via a wired digital optical cable. Dolby Atmos is supported using HDMI/ARC.
Thanks for your question. The JBL Bar 9.1 owner's manual, page 11, has detailed instructions to connect with your home network. Follow the procedure to first establish the connection using the sound bar, then continue through the Google Home app settings. Through this process, confirm that you have a strong WiFi signal.
090921/0508h PST 🇺🇸 Thank you for the descriptive description on JBL 9.1 sound bar system. Every aspect, every control, every salient feature, every minute part of the complete system was spoken quite eloquently (W/O dramatics) is well appreciated. One other prominent part that missed by many dramatists is that of activation of Dolby ‘Atmos’ HDMI combination can only be noticed by connecting ARC HDMI from the TV to JBL mating ARC HDMI receptacle. Explanation of ‘Atmos’ and eARC was unknown to me. Thank you for that. Your recommendation to use wired network is noted. (No one spoke about it) To conclude, the description is better than going through the vague UM. Take care and 73s…
I want your help mister!I have the Samsung Q90r Sounbar I want to get the Atmos from physical media and not from streaming servises so I want to find a 4k-Bluray player which support Dolby Atmos and watch 4k disc movies with atmos!Do u know which bluray player will work?
I dont know wich one i should take im tempted by this one but also by the q950t i dont know wich one is the best im really looking for a immersive experience with great surrounds sounds or sounds in general
Hi Carlos and thanks so much for your question. The downward attitude of the bass driver will only slightly affect your downstairs neighbors. Bass swells into a room in all directions and very differently than how the sound of your voice travels, and when the grenade explodes in the film, whether the woofer is front-firing and 4 inches off the floor or facing the floor won’t make a huge difference in how your downstairs neighbors hear the grenade exploding from your subwoofer. I’m happy to help in any way and can be reached at 866.961.7781 ext 258. Thanks again. Please be well and enjoy your weekend. - Ira Segall
Between this and the BOSE Soundbar 700 with the Sub Woofer and the rear speakers which are sold seperately would the Bose Package be good in BASS or this one the JBL 9.1 ? I am a BASS Head and prefer Airplay. As I have a lot of Apple stuff. What do you suggest ?
If your heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem I would recommend you get a Sonos soundbar, subwoofer, and wireless rear speakers. Bose also does not support Dolby Atmos in 2020 which is insane. Bose still sounds good though but if you want more features and use Apple for home integration I would definitely go with Sonos over Bose.
Anyone know what is the explanation of below sound modea? Hold bass button for 5 seconds, then press + on remote There is 5 different modes but no information from JBL
Can you get Dolby Atmos through an ARC channel on a TV instead of the eARC? Otherwise could I plug my PS5 into the bar and then the TV and skip the TV processing the audio? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for your inquiry. The TV must be connected to sound bar via eARC for the soundbar to process Atmos audio. Typically, a game console would connect to one of the TV HDMI inputs. If your game console has an optical digital output it could be connected to the Bar 9.1.
This is a 5.1.4 speaker system You don't count the up pointing speakers to the first #. The cute thing is the battery-operated satellite speakers. The best atoms sound bar system is still the Samsung HW Q90R, but the satellite speakers do need external power.
So I need some help. I have an H9G tv that has arc, and also have Dolby digital plus, which I'm told the Atmos passes through there compressed. Is this correct, if so am I just better off buying the Sonos beam.
I didn’t hear the comments on the sound quality.. Just that is filled the room with sound. Judging by that setup behind him, there wasn’t not much of a chance I suppose.
Thanks for your question. Dolby Atmos effects are added to the Dolby digital sound from the studio. The soundtrack must be Atmos capable to hear the height effects on an Atmos/DTS/X surround sound processor, surround receiver, or soundbar.
Great review. I have a samsung hw-k950 soundbar with Dolby atmos but unfortunately the software and stability is very bad. What do you recommend? Must a make a switch? And what do you prefer. Jbl or the new Sonos arc if money isn’t the most important thing. I use an Apple tv4k, Samsung 4K 8000 serie tv with one connect and arc, Xbox one X. BR, Dave
Just a heads up I have the same setup as you and I just got this sound bar . The Samsung tv and the one connect cannot decode Atmos , so if you want Atmos from your sound bar then you will have to plug your Apple TV or your Xbox directly into the hdmi input of the sound bar .
Thanks for your question. JBL has been engineering and building great sounding soundbars for years. They are one of our most popular brands and they offer many sizes and prices. The Sonos Arc is a new soundbar from Sonos that expands their wireless multi-room capability which appeals to Sonos customers.
Wouldn't this be considered a 5.1.4 system or is there another distinction other than the direction of sound for the designation of the third digit position? Maybe it's just up to the manufacturer?
Thanks for the useful review. I have a Phillips system with removable rear speakers. My question is is this JBL system really that good, better than my Philips system. I would proceed to purchase the system if positive answer. And can you repeat which good HDMI cable I have to buy for that system, I did not understand this well. (native language Dutch). Thanks Didier.
Didier, I assume you have the Philips Fidelio? I'm using the Fidelio HTL9100 with removable speakers too and i love it. I think Philips was the 1st to come up with the wireless removable rear speakers setup. It gives great immersive surround sound. But it's old technology because it doesn't do Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. I'm also looking at this JBL 9.1. From what I have been reading, it will add "height" making the surround experience even more immersive. I have not had the chance to test it out in the shops, wouldn't want to buy without listening to it 1st. But the Dolby Atmos capability paired with true wireless rear speakers setup will likely be the reason for me to buy it once I have the chance to test it out. Not sure about the HDMI cable part, maybe someone else can comment on this. Hope you get a chance to try out this speakers and you can decide if it is worth the upgrade.
So are you saying atoms can only be played via earc tv and soundbar or both earc and arc. At one point it sounded like you were saying earc only. Just after you talk about arc you mention earc compatibility. Can you give me some clarity.
This is what I’m saying. I keep reading reviews were people have connected the 9.1 via arc. However there is also a few that are having not so much problems but little things that maybe an update might sort out. Then I’m thinking is this because they are using arc instead of earc. Can anyone give 100% clarity on this.
If you read through alll this: www.avforums.com/threads/ces-2020-news-jbl-announces-bar-9-1-dolby-atmos-soundbar.2268238/ Some people are not happy with what its telling you on the display. I’m thinking is this to do with arc or earc and then hdmi 2.1 cables. I don’t really know if anyone has earc tv and using hdmi 2.1 cables or not. I wish someone would say if they are using 1, If there tv has earc ports and 2, Are they using hdmi 2.0b or 2.1 and do you get the same results from both.

Hi, does it support eARC? If yes, please advice the specifications of HDMI 2.1 cable to be used.
Play the same bass tracks on the Polk magnifi max and you will realize how powerfull the JBL is although the sound is not very good
@@LANCETDAVIS is the Polk Magnifi Max better sounding than thjs one what in terms of BASS ?
@@LANCETDAVIS When you say the difference in BASS is tremendous, that is when comparing to which models ? With the JBL 9.1 ?
I hope to buy this soon! I have the other one with wireless rear speakers but without Dolby atmos.and I am very satisfied with it! Is too expensive in this moment....next year perhaps!!!!!!

How does this JBL 9.1 compared with Sonos Arc + sub + a pair of Sonos One as surround? In term of sound quality for music and home theatre.

hi, in this video it shows that the rear speaker are set ith side speaker toward the tv not to you. in the video rear speaker are sitting left and right the couch . it is better to put rear speaker in back of the couch?
So if i have a movie file with dolby atmos in a hard drive and plug it into my tv (samsung qled q60r), will it output the dolby atmos sound to the soundbar even if my tv does not support dolby atmos?
Thanks for your question. The TV should pass the Atmos to the soundbar via an HDMI cable.
Which one would you choose, this soundbar or the Sony ST5000?
How do you check if you have the latest firmware installed?
Good explanation. Waiting for launch in India. Can u comment on life of batteries in detachable speakers? Are they replaceable? Any warranty?
Suround speakers are charged by connecting to the sides of the sound bar itself. No batteries. They charge 3 hours and get 10 hours of play back
Atmos also works over ARC, not just eARC. Over ARC it needs to transfer via Dolby Digital Plus, over eARC it will be able to transfer via Dolby TrueHD. This is only used by blu-rays. Netflix only transmits via Digital Plus so a TV with Netflix (native app or another device like a Nvidia shield TV) will only ever need ARC, not eARC.
That's if you TV supports the minimum of Dolby digital plus, my 4k tv has arc but because it doesn't have Dolby digital plus , zero atmos 😔
Can these two rear speakers be used like separate speakers?
Thanks for your question. The rear speakers can only connect wirelessly to the Bar 9.1. They cannot be used as free-standing wired speakers.
What if the batteries die? Back to 3.1?
Did you face any heating issue under the bar near center left side? I got mu recently and it gets hot with moderate use end of the day.

Hi sir...i heard the central channel is weak and dialogues are not clear and loud....is that true sir...if yes what's the solution?
Thank i
Thanks for your question.
Are the batteries for the rear speakers replaceable?
Bob Morawski No... But I’ve heard that both of them come with Micro-USB ports as well, for charging. I’m not 100% sure if this is true, but I’ve heard this from multiple individual sources

I have a question. Is this system better than the Bose 700 SB in terms of music?
Bose 700 SB is better for music and has better vocal clarity. The JBL are better for movie effects cos it has more bass extention. Welcome.

Ok bro let me know how it sounds in this positions.
You can move surround speakers near and far. Find out which is the best
how is this compared to sonos arc ore beam with sub? :)
@@christophertown7136 so if you had the choice between those two, you would pick JBL? :)

If you have the space and money for a receiver and speakers go with them, no bar will be able to beat a dedicated Atmos/DTS-X system with ceiling speakers!!
What do you mean by receivers
@@goodluckkarashani1711 reciever is the brains to the speakers. Its where the speakers plug into for power and adjustments. Same idea that your subs in a car needs an amplifier
Can the JBL bar 9.1 connect to a Samsung TV via wifi?
If yes will the Dolby ATMOS is supported via the wifi?
Thanks for your question. The built-in Wi-Fi is limited to streaming content like Chromecast and AirPlay 2. It connects to a TV via a wired HDMI/ARC connection or via a wired digital optical cable. Dolby Atmos is supported using HDMI/ARC.
Do you know how to connect this bar to WiFi? Whenever I try to search for the device in the app, nothing comes up. Can’t really continue without it.
(No one spoke about it)
To conclude, the description is better than going through the vague UM.

Im torn between this and sonos arc, which would u prefer?
what if I live in an apartment, doesn't that down firing sub-woofer get me kicked out of the building??
What if my TV does't have eARC and only ARC, will be able to give the ATMOS affect then?
If your tv does atmos yes, put will probably run into lip sync issues if connecting your devices to the TV and TV to the soundbar
Hold bass button for 5 seconds, then press + on remote
There is 5 different modes but no information from JBL
Can you get Dolby Atmos through an ARC channel on a TV instead of the eARC? Otherwise could I plug my PS5 into the bar and then the TV and skip the TV processing the audio? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for your inquiry. The TV must be connected to sound bar via eARC for the soundbar to process Atmos audio. Typically, a game console would connect to one of the TV HDMI inputs. If your game console has an optical digital output it could be connected to the Bar 9.1.
Is this available in India?
This is a 5.1.4 speaker system
You don't count the up pointing speakers to the first #.
The cute thing is the battery-operated satellite speakers.
The best atoms sound bar system is still the Samsung HW Q90R, but the satellite speakers do need external power.

does the film have to be filmed/recorded as dolby atmos or will any blu ray etc be presented in atmos? thanks.
Thanks for your question. Dolby Atmos effects are added to the Dolby digital sound from the studio. The soundtrack must be Atmos capable to hear the height effects on an Atmos/DTS/X surround sound processor, surround receiver, or soundbar.
can you mount the rear speakers? and if so can you easily remove them to charge them
John Bechtold a wall mount is included. The speakers just slide in and can be removed very easily
It has a lot of boom? That's very technical gargen huh? So the subwoofer is boomy or does it have some punch?
Its boomy. Lol. Doubt base will be crisp and tight like something from say an SVS SB1000
What is the name of the Bose sound bar with detachable speakers??
Wouldn't this be considered a 5.1.4 system or is there another distinction other than the direction of sound for the designation of the third digit position? Maybe it's just up to the manufacturer?
Thanks for your question. The Bar 9.1 is a 9.1 channel unit, configured for 5.1.4 surround with 4 Atmos channels.
Philips is a joke hahahahahah how can you compare a Pro brand Jbl with a brand like Philips Sony or Samsung ???
HDMI cable you need to use Is a 2.1 that is fast enough to send earc ultimate audio signals from TV to the bar.
So are you saying atoms can only be played via earc tv and soundbar or both earc and arc. At one point it sounded like you were saying earc only. Just after you talk about arc you mention earc compatibility. Can you give me some clarity.
Cant get atmos from arc
I think you can get atmos via arc but compressed
eARC is just uncompressed. You could still still get Atmos and DTS-X from ARC.
This is what I’m saying. I keep reading reviews were people have connected the 9.1 via arc. However there is also a few that are having not so much problems but little things that maybe an update might sort out. Then I’m thinking is this because they are using arc instead of earc. Can anyone give 100% clarity on this.
If you read through alll this: www.avforums.com/threads/ces-2020-news-jbl-announces-bar-9-1-dolby-atmos-soundbar.2268238/
Some people are not happy with what its telling you on the display.
