Finally snagged one of these. Thank you for this review which put this on my radar to compare to Samsung Q90r (7.1.4) & Nakamichi Shockwafe (7.2.4) set. This appealed to me more due to (1) quality of sound coming from a real speaker company; (2) easier setup and (3) the true wireless rear surrounds. I don't like exposed cables in between furniture and with pets that like to chew up and pull on cables this works out too. Additionally I avoided all the wimpy Bass soundbars like Vizio and most of the Sonos type setups. They just lack the "oomph" and barely tickled me with and their lows. I tested a few different ones at home just to be sure and highly recommend other folks to do the same. Your space matters when it comes to properly having the output and the necessary Decibels to "feel" your movies and tunes. My previous JBL 3.1 system lasted just over a decade before finally getting fried by a surge. Thanks again and I will be recommending folks your way.
Dude my Nak 9.2 is a monster, especially with the latest firmware. Did you review it at home? It still to this day impresses me....
.
Well the Samsung soundbars are made by Harmon Kardon which is one of the top speaker companies out there, and JBL is owned by Harman. But yea i def agree with you for some reason the Samsung Harman Kardon soundbars def lack bass, the quality of the bass is good but as you stated doesnt have enough oomph, due to the subs lower wattage 6-8 inch subwoofers. I had bought the Samsung HW-Q60T, the quality of the sound was really good and it had great features but i returned it cuz of the wimpy bass as you put it, the sub was only 160 watts with a 6.5 inch speaker. I then went with the JBL bar 5.1 Surround which has a 300 watt 10 inch sub and im much happier, it booms. The only con about it so far is the lack of sound modes and EQ adjustments, you can only adjust the bass, but the one mode they give you is def good enough for me to like it, and for music i just use the EQ in Spotify so that solves that problem.
Hi,i have right now the jbl 3.1 soundbar, and i was thinking to change with this one,9.1 bar. Please, tell me,only in terms of low bass, what is the difference between those two? They have the same 10 inch driver on subwoofer, the same dimmensions for the enclosure. It is any differences?
how do you like the JBL 9.1? I am beating myself up over what soundbar to go with. I have 13ft ceilings and an "open floor plan" so I'm not sure what type of system is best for this application. Upfiring speakers, or software based virtual atmos like on the Sony HT-z9f. Currently consider the Sony Z9F, JBL 9.1, Samsung Q90R, or the Nakamichi 7.2.4. I just can't get over the looks of the Nakamichi...it just looks cheap to me even though I know it puts out good sound.
The first bar I received was faulty. Couldnt keep connection to the rear speakers, the sound kept changing between stereo and surround when the rear speakers was docked to the soundbar. The sound crackled. The calibration kept failing. The JBL support wasnt any help at all. I desided to return the soundbar to my retailer. JBL felt bad for all the trouble I had and sent me a 20% voucher which I used to buy a second JBL 9.1 bar. I have now tested the second bar a few days and it has worked flawlessly. I am happy I gave JBL a second chance, because man, that bar has awsome sound. And with the money saved on the second bar, thats a good investment.
Hi Martin, I brought it couple of days ago, I have an issue to connect the soundbar with Wi-Fi home I hold the power button and I start to work with my phone through Google home but always feel connection, did you have same issue with the connection?
Thanks in advance
Sam Aljarba i connected to wifi from my iPhones wifi settings. It did take a while for my phone to find the soundbar, but it did find it and i could connect without any issues. I cant say how it should work on google home.
Where did you guys get yours at? I'm still waiting for mine through Amazon but it's coming in 5 days tho. I can't wait to try them out.
You just need to ask good to setup a new device on your phone and it should just scan for the JBL at that time.
Cool, this time you got right how the rear satellites need to be positioned! Don't know why JBL choosed not to give us more control on the subwoofer, on the old 3.1 and 5.1(with satellites) systems you could set the woofer volume from 0 to 30, that was awesome because if you watched something at night you could even lower the sub to 0 or whatever you liked!
We've owned the 9.1 for over a week and can officially say for $999 this is one of the best surround set ups for the money. Crisp sound, clean dialog, deep resonating bass and accurate spatial sound. We had purchased the Sonos Arc surround set originally and loved it however when I visited a friend and heard the JBL I decided to take the Sonos back and picked up the JBL. I can say that the Sonos set may have a slight edge in some areas but in our opinion no were close to Justify the extra $800.
I am exactly torn between the JBL and the Sonos Arc (without a sub due to budget at the moment, may be added later). Are you still content with the JBL? Is it tideous to recalibrate the rear speakers after recharging them everytime? Would it be okay to place them on the couch to our sides?
do you setup rear speakers for normal TV or just for movies?
@@JohnTrasher you don’t need to recalibrate the rear speakers every time you recharge them if you put them in the same place.
This is a 5.1.4 channel system. The 4 upfiring Atmos speakers are the .4 at the end
Yep you are exactly right, technically its a 5.1.4 channel system
They just added the 5 and 4 to make it sound better
Upfiring/Atmos speakers are not infact channels. Atmos works like the old Dolby Prologic II/ Prologic IIz that decodes AAC 5.1 or AAC+ 5.1.2.Prologic IIz is the father of Atmos.
Atmos/DTSX is in fact 5.1 real channels or in isolated cases 7.1 channels with Audio digital data, and also have a data channel for instructions to rip off some parts and redirect them in upfiring speakers.
Same with AAC, 2 channels for audio and one data channel with instructions/ commands.
Atmos also works over ARC, not just eARC. Over ARC it needs to transfer via Dolby Digital Plus, over eARC it will be able to transfer via Dolby TrueHD. This is only used by blu-rays. Netflix only transmits via Digital Plus so a TV with Netflix (native app or another device like a Nvidia shield TV) will only ever need ARC, not eARC.
That's if you TV supports the minimum of Dolby digital plus, my 4k tv has arc but because it doesn't have Dolby digital plus , zero atmos 😔
Thank you sir for the excellent informative video of this product. I’m waiting for the delivery of my new Sony 65” X90CH television on 8/11/2020 from Costco and I am planning on getting this JBL setup later to go with my TV. You taught me about some awesome features on my TV (HDMI ARC) I didn’t understand at first. Yes my TV comes with 4 HDMI’s and one of the is ARC. Plus the TV has Dolby Atmos feature which I didn’t realize until I watched this video. You come across very knowledgeable in your video’s, speaking clearly with detailed advice about the product with good sound, and lighting for yourself and the product. A lot of RUclipsr’s is not cut out for these type of informative RUclips videos thanks again. 👍🏽👍🏽
Batches of this soundbar shipped in the last few months has a defect were volume of the rear speakers cannot be adjusted while detached and the rear button show "NOT SUPPORTED".
Good explanation. Waiting for launch in India. Can u comment on life of batteries in detachable speakers? Are they replaceable? Any warranty?
Suround speakers are charged by connecting to the sides of the sound bar itself. No batteries. They charge 3 hours and get 10 hours of play back
I hope to buy this soon! I have the other one with wireless rear speakers but without Dolby atmos.and I am very satisfied with it! Is too expensive in this moment....next year perhaps!!!!!!
Love the delivery of your presentation😎
Have enjoyed the syztem for 14 months. No problems thank God !!!
This is probably the best commentary I have found on YT for this product. Well done.
Hi. Thank you for the review. 2 questions if you could respond:
1 how does it sound compared to Bose 700 soundbar plus bass module?
2 will the battery last long period. I have seen some reviews challenging the battery life and also it charges only on standby mode.
Bose 700 nor bose 900 are having distortion once u fire up volume.but this beast can handle the full blast with no problem 😃
This is a 5.1.4 speaker system
You don't count the up pointing speakers to the first #.
The cute thing is the battery-operated satellite speakers.
The best atoms sound bar system is still the Samsung HW Q90R, but the satellite speakers do need external power.
I didn’t hear the comments on the sound quality.. Just that is filled the room with sound. Judging by that setup behind him, there wasn’t not much of a chance I suppose.
Nice review. The jbl bar 5.1 received many negative reviews concerning the quality of musical reproduction (warmth of music, mids etc). Is it any better with the 9.1 bar?
I feel the same about my Bar 3.1 as well. The music reproduction sounds metallic and hollow. The saving grace is the sub woofer. Play the same bass tracks on the Polk magnifi max and you will realize how powerfull the JBL is although the sound is not very good
@@LANCETDAVIS is the Polk Magnifi Max better sounding than thjs one what in terms of BASS ?
What I read about sound quality is that music sound quality not being great. So I guess is hasn't improved. But I don't have one so can't confirm personally.
@@augustya7543 The answer is no. The JBL 10 inch woofer crushes my house. The MagniFi Max can not compare in that area. The Bar bar 3.1 sound is... hollow and metallic but the BASS CRUSHES. The Polk is more warm and "loud natural overall" sounding to me. I can compare AG 7 Rings, GM I get the Bag and La Roux Going in for the Kill Scream rmx and there is a huge difference in bass. The 9.1 has the same sub as 3.1 so hopefully the bar itself has better sound quality overall. The difference in BASS is tremendous
@@LANCETDAVIS When you say the difference in BASS is tremendous, that is when comparing to which models ? With the JBL 9.1 ?
Brother you are awesome demo your dress colour back round painting excellentttt rocking
eARC CAN transmit Atmos from your smart TV to the soundbar because the 'smart' tv side of things - Netflix and other apps, has compressed Atmos, which can go via ARC without eARC. What ARC can't do is take your blu ray Atmos from TV to soundbar.
How does this compare to Sonos, Samsung, and LG soundbar systems?
what if I live in an apartment, doesn't that down firing sub-woofer get me kicked out of the building??
Hi Carlos and thanks so much for your question. The downward attitude of the bass driver will only slightly affect your downstairs neighbors. Bass swells into a room in all directions and very differently than how the sound of your voice travels, and when the grenade explodes in the film, whether the woofer is front-firing and 4 inches off the floor or facing the floor won’t make a huge difference in how your downstairs neighbors hear the grenade exploding from your subwoofer. I’m happy to help in any way and can be reached at 866.961.7781 ext 258. Thanks again. Please be well and enjoy your weekend. - Ira Segall
Which one would you choose, this soundbar or the Sony ST5000?
Is it worth it to sell the 5.1 and get this one or its not worth the upgrade?
I played the 9.1 and 5.1 bsck to back at best buy. There is a difference, bass was deeper. Im going with the 9.1 system
What about the lifespan of the battery (rears). Can they get replaced? Makes no sense if you cant charge them anymore after a year or two
You could charge them via micro USB so no need to rely on just the battery.
@@volcalstone yes but i want them to be wireless ;) thats what its all about. With a 5 y support for the batteries i would buy the bar
@@sef0riz0r I had a Philips Fidelio B5 5.1 soundbar before I bought the JBL Bar 9.1. It also had wireless battery charged rear speakers like the JBL bar and even after 5 years of normal use, the rear speakers still holds it batterycharge for about 10 hours.
@@martinboy1974 hey I just got my system too and I love it so far. I had a question, are you in the US? If so did you get the end caps for these speakers in your box? I didn't get any for some reason. I did reach out to JBL and it looks like they're willing to send me a full set but they don't have it on stock at this time. I will check back with in a few weeks. This system is sold out on JBL and Amazon at this time. I'm not sure about other retailers.
@@martinboy1974
how much time you geting now from those wireless speaker's of 9.1
With four Atmos channels, wouldn't that make this 5.1.4?
Iray801 Yes but technically this does have a total of 9 channels plus the sub. It's all marketing from JBL.
Pretty sure they named it this way to avoid confusion. JBL 3.1, 5.1 and 9.1 :)
090921/0508h PST 🇺🇸 Thank you for the descriptive description on JBL 9.1 sound bar system. Every aspect, every control, every salient feature, every minute part of the complete system was spoken quite eloquently (W/O dramatics) is well appreciated. One other prominent part that missed by many dramatists is that of activation of Dolby ‘Atmos’ HDMI combination can only be noticed by connecting ARC HDMI from the TV to JBL mating ARC HDMI receptacle. Explanation of ‘Atmos’ and eARC was unknown to me. Thank you for that. Your recommendation to use wired network is noted. (No one spoke about it)
To conclude, the description is better than going through the vague UM.
Take care and 73s…
This seems to be a nice setup, especially with the detachable wireless speakers. If I didn't have my 1,000 watt Nakamachi 9.2.4, which I am extremely happy with, I would have definitely considered this. Mine has two subwoofers and mine most probably goes louder, but this would be loud enough. I think what JBL should consider is adding an additional subwoofer and increasing the available ports on the sound bar. Most affordable TVs have between two and three HDMI ports (Not 4) so the increase in the HDMI ports and the inclusion of an additional subwoofer would steel potential buyers of the Shockwafe that I have and the Samsung Q90R.
I think you can add an extra sub to this
Great video and explanation, thank you!
You're looking like Kevin Owens
lol yes
Looks nice, I always have to go directly into my Nak 9.2 to get atmos, none of my TVs will pass or via ARC....
Could you help me finalize my purchase? JBL 9.1 or Harman Kardon Enchat 1300 with subwoofer?
Great video.. 👌🏼 Between sound bars and receivers which one will you recommend?if you have a video plz suggest.. thanks
If you have the space and money for a receiver and speakers go with them, no bar will be able to beat a dedicated Atmos/DTS-X system with ceiling speakers!!
What do you mean by receivers
@@goodluckkarashani1711 reciever is the brains to the speakers. Its where the speakers plug into for power and adjustments. Same idea that your subs in a car needs an amplifier
No review as of yet has provided info on whether the batteries are replaceable or not.
I'm waiting for klipsch bar 54. Gonna be a beast!!
Q90r has upward Dolby atmos speakers in the rear
Should I buy this or Q90R soundbar??? Please recommend
Already bought it. It sounds amazing
@@cyberbud which one you bought?Q90R?
@@junhong5439 Q90R
I want to purchase this Sound System
Maybe I missed it, but did you talk about your experience with the "height" channels in atmos?
How does this JBL 9.1 compared with Sonos Arc + sub + a pair of Sonos One as surround? In term of sound quality for music and home theatre.
Excellent review, I hope soon you can make a review about this soundbar vs New Bose Soundbar 900 and test the Dolby Atmos sound, I know LG soundbar came with surround wireless speakers already but also Bose soundbar 900 can add wireless surround speakers, I wonder which one is better. I hope you or someone already test this two excellent soundbars.
First time watching, nice explanation keep it up.
One of the best Reviews i I’ve ever watched 😅😂🤣
So which is better Sonos Arc or this JBL system?
rtings has the JBL system rated FAR above the Arc
Ryan Jensen yes I saw that and I changed to JBL system. Thanks for you input.
My LG Oled has only ARC. Is Dolby Atmos will work?
Atmos also works over ARC, not just eARC. Over ARC it needs to transfer via Dolby Digital Plus, over eARC it will be able to transfer via Dolby TrueHD. This is only used by blu-rays. Netflix only transmits via Digital Plus so a TV with Netflix (native app or another device like a Nvidia shield TV) will only ever need ARC, not eARC.
Mr. Point do you need a special HDMI cable to support Dolby Atmos pass through for a sound bar that supports Dolby Atmos or can you use any newer HDMI cable? I’m looking at the slim HDMI cables on Monoprice & none mention support for Dolby Atmos.
DFrost25 any modern will do, needs to be hdmi 1.4 and up if I remember correctly.
You give me hope in humanity ❤
What if my TV does't have eARC and only ARC, will be able to give the ATMOS affect then?
If your tv does atmos yes, put will probably run into lip sync issues if connecting your devices to the TV and TV to the soundbar
Thanks...very informative and professional:)
Does it support Dialog Enhancement ?
I have a question. Is this system better than the Bose 700 SB in terms of music?
Bose 700 SB is better for music and has better vocal clarity. The JBL are better for movie effects cos it has more bass extention. Welcome.
Thanks and appreciate your efforts for creating this review video. Could you tell me which one is best SONY HTS5000 or JBL 9.1 for listening music with heavy bass and treble effects?
Sony is always number 1
@@parkashsingh6048 not necessarily
I own the 5.1 with the removable rear speakers and I love it. I was negatively surprised that this new version only gives 5 levels of volume for bass... The 5.1 give a 30 volume level for the sub, and 6 levels for the rear speakers.
I’m planning to buy JBL 5.1 . Is it good or should I choose 5.1 surround sound or Sony HT G700
Every levels of bass is x10..now you will have an idea how loud this beast.
I have a 23 ft high ceiling in the living room area. Do you think this system will be able to provide the atmos effect?
Can these two rear speakers be used like separate speakers?
Thanks for your question. The rear speakers can only connect wirelessly to the Bar 9.1. They cannot be used as free-standing wired speakers.
Good review. Question, for the rears, why would you point the LR and RR towards the soundbar? Seems like they should be aimed at the listening position?
JJ…… David had a Class, on the subject (Atmos, even with an image) Perhaps, you need to watch the clip more closely to understand.
Please do.
Great explanation and review!
Thanks, Matt! Glad you enjoyed it.
I don’t quite get what you’re saying. First you said you need to make sure you plug the bar into the ARC port of your TV to get all the sound from the rest of your devices. Then you said “you need to make sure your port is eARC in order to get atmos”. So are you saying that if my tv only has an ARC port and not eARC, Dolby Atmos wont come through the bar?
Jeremy Armogida yeah he messed up by saying just eARC. As with some of the comments here you only need ARC to get Atmos. eARC will give you uncompressed audio for a better Atmos experience.
He replied to one of the comments so if I don't have that EARC I could use my gaming system "PS4 pro" then?
@@volcalstone to bad the only other way atmos can be passed is with Dolby digital plus , which I don't think my TV has.
Im torn between this and sonos arc, which would u prefer?
Thank you very much sir give me information I love the JBL product I like to buy Sir how much this total weight sir 😀
Thanks for the useful review. I have a Phillips system with removable rear speakers. My question is is this JBL system really that good, better than my Philips system. I would proceed to purchase the system if positive answer. And can you repeat which good HDMI cable I have to buy for that system, I did not understand this well. (native language Dutch).
Thanks Didier.
Philips is a joke hahahahahah how can you compare a Pro brand Jbl with a brand like Philips Sony or Samsung ???
Didier, I assume you have the Philips Fidelio? I'm using the Fidelio HTL9100 with removable speakers too and i love it. I think Philips was the 1st to come up with the wireless removable rear speakers setup. It gives great immersive surround sound.
But it's old technology because it doesn't do Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.
I'm also looking at this JBL 9.1.
From what I have been reading, it will add "height" making the surround experience even more immersive. I have not had the chance to test it out in the shops, wouldn't want to buy without listening to it 1st. But the Dolby Atmos capability paired with true wireless rear speakers setup will likely be the reason for me to buy it once I have the chance to test it out.
Not sure about the HDMI cable part, maybe someone else can comment on this.
Hope you get a chance to try out this speakers and you can decide if it is worth the upgrade.
HDMI cable you need to use Is a 2.1 that is fast enough to send earc ultimate audio signals from TV to the bar.
I got the JBL and I noticed the side speakers don’t touch the bottom... is that how yours is as well?
I wonder how this is compared to the Q90r from Samsung because Harmon makes both bars and they are owned by Samsung.
I dont know wich one i should take im tempted by this one but also by the q950t i dont know wich one is the best im really looking for a immersive experience with great surrounds sounds or sounds in general

Hi, does it support eARC? If yes, please advice the specifications of HDMI 2.1 cable to be used.
5.1.4
Come on JBL, don't confuse people.
This is a 9.1

If you don't detach the rear speakers, you'll have a 9.1 soundbar. If you detach them, it's a 5.1.4.
Which one is better? JBL or nakamichi 7.2.4?
If my TV only has ARC, then I will not get ATMOS sound send to the JBK 9.1 soundbar?

Which one better for all rounder like music, movies & gaming. SVS prime wireless with sb2000 pro or JBL 9.1 soundbar?
Great review
hi, in this video it shows that the rear speaker are set ith side speaker toward the tv not to you. in the video rear speaker are sitting left and right the couch . it is better to put rear speaker in back of the couch?
Great Review 👍
Your marketing is a bit misleading as the system appears to be a 5.1.4 rather than a 9.1 system. The back of the sound bar is labelled as having a ARC connection. You then recommend attaching it a tv with a eARC connection. So does the sound bar have an eARC connection. I don’t like deceptive salespeople
Thanks for your question. We are sorry for the confusion. The Bar 9.1 is a 9.1 channel unit, configured for 5.1.4 surround with 4 Atmos channels. The specifications on our website state “HDMI eARC: 1”. We confirmed the HDMI specifications as included in the JBL Bar 9.1 Owners Manual HDMI Specification: “HDMI Video output (with enhanced Audio Return Channel, eARC): 1”.

Sir which one would suggest if you have to pic on between JBL 820W Bar 9.1 and Bose Smart Soundbar 900
why not 5.1.4? that would be the correct notation whien it's set up correctly
Great video!! One quick question tho, i have the feeling that the sound from the rear speakers is really low, even so that i can barely hear a difference between the rear speakers being on or off..is that normal?
can you mount the rear speakers? and if so can you easily remove them to charge them
John Bechtold a wall mount is included. The speakers just slide in and can be removed very easily
How do you check if you have the latest firmware installed?
What is the name of the Bose sound bar with detachable speakers??
Hi sir do the soundbar have gaming EQ settings?
Can the JBL bar 9.1 connect to a Samsung TV via wifi?
If yes will the Dolby ATMOS is supported via the wifi?
Thanks for your question. The built-in Wi-Fi is limited to streaming content like Chromecast and AirPlay 2. It connects to a TV via a wired HDMI/ARC connection or via a wired digital optical cable. Dolby Atmos is supported using HDMI/ARC.
Compared to Sonos arc?
Thanks for the review. Can you please do the review on new Samsung HW-Q950T Sondbar. Also from your experience Samsung vs Sonos Arc vs JBL, which one you think gave you great Cinematic affect. Thanks.
Read my response to the pinned comment above about the hw-q850t, might help you.
I wish they made a wired version with proper looking surround speakers -- no worrying about the surrounds dying out in the middle of a film.
The rears has 10 hrs of battery life man. Plus they will warn you when it's low so it's not going to come as a surprise. You could always run full time power to the rears anytime you want. You could even use an external battery if it's more convenient.
This system is perfect for me as I don't like wires period. It has everything you would want minus side firing speakers. This is why I got one for myself and I love it so far!
@@volcalstone If I don't ever plan on moving the surrounds then what's the point to this design? Pain in the ass to have to constantly recharge them. Wires are easy to route inconspicuously in nay home and they provide a full rich uncompromising sound. Wireless audio has lower dynamic range and is susceptible to interference.
SoCalFreelance relax my bro we all have different taste
How does it compare to Samsung HW-K950? It's also a 5.1.4 Atmos soundbar, but I would like to upgrade because I want eARC
I was wondering what you thought of the Atmos effects. Did it sound like things were above you? Also can you comment on how the center speaker was? I wanted to know if it was crisp and clear the whole time or if it gets muffled when there's action going on. I currently have a LGSK10Y and have always had issues with the center channel. Thank you for any info.
I have the LGSK10Y as well. I too hate the center. No matter the setting, it seems to always be too low or high.
@@antoniolewis I have been doing the center speaker trick where you go onto the app and turn the center all the way down then all the way up and it makes it a little louder for some reason. It is annoying though and doesn't solve the muffled issue during action scenes.
Hi there, does the bar also do DTS:X ? Have seen conflicting reports. Cheers!
When playing DTSX, the Soundbar displays DTSX NEURAL X on the front.
Can you confirm that this is proper DTSX and not artificially enhanced?

Great review made my search for a soundbar very narrow. I'm going to go with JBL over sony and samsung.. just have a question.. this bar does not have eARC connection wouldn't that hinder Dolby Atmos and dts x experience?
@bulls on parade Thanks!
Thanks for your question. Based upon its specifications, the JBL Bar 9.1 has an HDMI eARC input.
Wouldn't this be considered a 5.1.4 system or is there another distinction other than the direction of sound for the designation of the third digit position? Maybe it's just up to the manufacturer?
Thanks for your question. The Bar 9.1 is a 9.1 channel unit, configured for 5.1.4 surround with 4 Atmos channels.

does the film have to be filmed/recorded as dolby atmos or will any blu ray etc be presented in atmos? thanks.
Thanks for your question. Dolby Atmos effects are added to the Dolby digital sound from the studio. The soundtrack must be Atmos capable to hear the height effects on an Atmos/DTS/X surround sound processor, surround receiver, or soundbar.
