I’ve been fishing as a Co-angler since the Redman days and I enjoy gettting to go out and spend the day fishing with a new person on a new body of water. I literally plan my vacations around the Toyota series every year but after spending the entire season setting in the back watching a guy play on his video game I decided I would rather go spend a week in Branson with my wife . The tournament organization isn’t getting my $100 membership per year and the city that paid them to come fish their lake isn’t getting my money to spend on food, hotels. I’m not the only Co-angler that feels this way. We are seeing more and more boater on boater draws these days in the BFL’s just because they can’t get enough Non boaters to fish

I think the issue is that the manufacturers use the pros to advertise their products and if the only thing the pro is using is a tiny minnow on a jig head, the pro can't effectively advertise the other products to regular fisherman because they obviously don't use them themselves. They'd like the pro to say "I won tournament XYZ fishing a (insert crank, top water, bladed jig) to drive sales. But now the pros / tournaments can't advertise anything other than 2-4 products, when the manufacturer has as many as 100+.

Exactly right Randy. I cast was pretty much all about FFS baits. Sad situation right now in the fishing industry. I did hear that the MLF/BPT will be doing 1/2 tournaments with FFS and 1/2 without. But Bass has still done nothing. I personally would like to see Bass do a year without it, just to see who can actually fish from knowledge and instincts and not solely rely on FFS. I know it will NEVER happen. Now Lowrance has come out with the Eagle eye 9 for $1,000. My opinion, that’s still a high price for everyday fisherman and it’s not solving the real problem. I can tell you, from my experience, the local lake we fish is an hour away, it is NOT fishing like it used to. I spoke with a gentleman who had been fishing the same lake for 25 years and he said, the lake keeps getting worse but more so over the last 5 years. 🤔 wonder why that is? It’s only a 1750 acre reservoir anyway. Not river fed. Just a water supply reservoir. That lake was considered the best fishery in Southern Illinois. Not so much now. This year and last year have been awful. Oh, you can catch a couple 6 inches, but who wants to just fish for dinkers. Can’t even catch them in numbers anymore. Definitely a sad situation.

Its helped me find trees and rock piles in my home lake that i fished since i was 8 that i never knew were there but i dont use it to throw to fish, that just seems pointless and not why i go fishing. I like the mystery. Now after having it and really seeing those spots i dont even turn it on. Maybe someone can give us some rough estimate of the sponsor and their relative contributions. I don't know, but I suspect you may over-estimating the value of tackle companies. If your start with the list of sponsors, take out electronic mfg and any retailer that sells electronics, take out cars, truck, food and all not fishing sponsors, take out boat/motor mfg, take out clothing and gear mfg. What percentage of total sponserships is left. I bet the electronics companies will fill that gap if push comes to shove. I want to believe Randy, but I think the big money is on the other side of this issue.

I'm not certain FFS is the cause for the loss of lure sales. In the past 2 years, cost of goods has skyrocketed. Two years ago, our family averaged $600 a month for groceries. Now it's about $1K! Therefore, my fishing tackle budget took a hit. I think this FFS vs tackle sales argument might be a causation vs correlation fallacy. 🤷‍♂️

  • @evanforst7272

I think it boils down to how people will describe a pro fisherman.
If I’m hunting and I pay to go up in a helicopter using thermal goggles to find the animals, can I really call myself a tracking professional? Or is the guy who can track by hoofprints and experience more professional, even if he doesn’t bag as big an animal as the goggles guy?
Personally I’d say the helicopter tracker guy is still a hunter, but he’s fooling himself if he says he’s a pro without being able to track the hard way.
Much like an FFS fisherman is still a fisherman, but I don’t think he can call himself a pro if he can’t fish without it.
I suspect the money will be in running two classes per tournament. FFS and non FFS. You keep the classic fisherman market relevant by keeping it competitive and the FFS guys will still drop the big bucks to have a technological pissing match.
The only downside is could see prize winnings be less for the classic guys since the companies not focusing on FFS have less cash to throw around because most fishing accessories don’t require financing like FFS does.
I’m by no means an expert in all this though so what do I know… 😜
