Never had any luck with chatterbaits, granted I have only seriously started fishing a lot 3 years ago. Am watching every chatterbait video I can find. I am going to spend a lot of fishing hours this year with this bait to try and figure it out and hopefully catch something finally on a chatterbait cause right now I just don't have confidence in it even though everyone else seems to catch a lot on it.
@@MrHabitat009 I started doing that towards the end of last year. Since I only recently got into serious fishing besides what I did off the dock as a kid, I didn't have much knowledge and experience with such the plethora of baits and techniques out there. So towards the end of last year when I would fish by myself, I would say to myself that I was only going to use one type of bait be it spinnerbait, crankbait, jig what have you and only concentrate on how to fish that type of bait with different retrieves, colors and locations. It worked out very good cause I had about the same confidence in the spinnerbait as I currently have with the chatterbait which wasn't much and that has now changed. That is why this spring, once the ice goes out , I am doing this same process with the next two baits/techniques that I am still lacking experience and confidence in and that is the chatterbait and the jerkbait and I have confidence from everything I have been watching over the winter that I can do with these that I did with the others. This is especially important for me to learn these this year as I am joining a fun bass league this summer and will need my knowledge base to be as big as I can get it cause I will be behind the guys that have been fishing these leagues for years.
I love them they are like a weed whacker through the grass. And those better components won't matter much if you have a little glue, keeping the hook sharp with a file is probably more important
I use the crosseyez chatterbait the most bc it has the weed guard on it and the orange eyes seem to help as well. I've caught some huge fish on them. I usually use a super fluke or a trick worm for a trailer. I've talked to a lot of people and most of them say they don't work but they work great year around for me. I think the trick is the retrieve, like Randy said gotta change it up. What works the best for me is constant medium speed, then about 3 or 4 turns real fast then let die for a couple of feet, then give it a good pump up and start over. This retrieve is killer around cypress trees
I prefer a glass rod as well… helps fish to get bait better. DOBYNS 735 Glass is my go to. Also I am in TX & I can tell you the Jackhammer far out fishes the original here.
Great video. I'm mostly a bank fisherman and in my part of Ohio I find the Zman mini max without the skirt, with a 3-3.5" tube, is killer in creeks, ponds and lakes around me.
I never even got a bite on the OG chatterbait. It got hung up in the trees down at the river and I left it there. 2 years ago I reinvested into 6 or 7 new vibrating jigs and have managed just 2 or 3 LMBs on the jackhammer. The fish have seen everything too often here in highly pressured SoCal waters.
My favorite lure . Totally different opinion on line and retrieve. I did fish as co angler in tournaments . My method 60 pound braid heavy flipping stick . Try to get it in heavy cover get it hung up or not rip it let it fall repeatedly. I have not counted how many times I have straighten out the hook . I’d say it is in the 40 times before the hook breaks off . This keeps the boater from having to maneuver boat to get me unhung up. This system I called it “rip it and lip ‘em “
Thank you! I love the chatterbait and watching this gave me even more confidence that I’m fishing these the right way with a few tips I hadn’t thought of yet
I question putting trailer on perfectly straight then hacking off chunks? But I don’t usually question you. You have been very helpful and a great wealth of knowledge for me.
O yea brother been loving theses seminars just finished watching the jig one over again in here working on my tackle house as the wife calls it she says it’s passed a room a long time ago 😂
Thank you Randy... Love and happiness to your family! I have been hoping for a slightly linger video from you on Chatterbaits... Easily my favorite lure/ technique!! Most productive setup has been MH 7'6" Rod with a Moderate tip, 7:1 gear ratio reel, 10# braid......if I'm in waters with Pike or Musky, I will add a long 15- 20# flouro leader... The speed of the reel and softer rod tip have been key for me.
I'm with you on using the original chatterbaits vs the jackhammer. I've caught some of my biggest PBs on the original chatterbait. I just can't justify spending double the amount for an slightly upgraded hook and bait keeper!
Randy I think your correct with sometimes the jackhammer produces in practice but you and everyone else chucking a jackhammer fish are like hmmm I seen that for last few days different sound from normal chatterbait slightly different they commit better.
Good stuff randy thanks for sharing ur years of experience on the water just fishing and the many variables when fishing for a living!!! My question what indicates the fish are feeding on crawdads or shad to match the feeding so u pick the correct bait to concentrate on imitating. How do you know? Thank you
Randy on the trailers do you rough up the plastic like you've shown on other baits? Also what's your opinion on dyes for the trailers... Colors/time of year?
I'm really curious about chatterbaits in the saltwater. Seems like it would be awesome in the surf. I'll find out soon. I got some jig heads with willow blades, a couple classic chatterbaits and a Googan Clickbait to try on the big cichlids and in the surf at the beach in Costa Rica. I haven't tried them enough for bass to have any luck yet but maybe this year.
I have a ton of zman bladed jigs but I think if you only use zman you are missing out. The thunder cricket and the slobber knocker are also awesome they have there own unique action and sound. I use them all and sometimes one works better than the other
I have enjoyed fishing the heavy models of vibrating jigs on rocky points. I will toss it out there let it fall to the bottom. Then pump the bait and let it drop back to the bottom. Those bass will smoke it.
If you wanted a skinnier swimbait and were only interested in the tail couldn't you just get the 4.2 in megabass hazedong shad? Or does that make too much sense?
I do really good alot on the original chatter bait as well.. I think it's just about obsolete and nobody really throws it anymore and it's vibration is different from all the newer ones guys are throwing these days
Don’t know if the original is ‘better’ since I’ve never fished one. The original works just fine. One question: why is the A rig considered a ‘fly-by-night’ lure? It has caught fish since the day is was introduced and still does - evidence MLF banning it again. Tournament officials don’t ban lures that are fads
I always wonder if the blade being inside the fishes mouth negatively impacts a hookset..? It is unlike any other bait in that regard. It has to blow it open somewhat.
Hi Joseph, I can tell you from years of personal experience that if you use a composite or glass rod and just reel fast while applying firm steady pressure on the hookset, your bite/hook/land ratio on a bladed jig will be exceptional.
Never seen a bass, that said "how much was that lure, before I bite it?" Original chatterbait catches plenty of bass. Another story about cheaper baits... as I have a TON of frogs, 1 particular day the only frog that I could get some bites on...Bass pro shops poppin' frog. Who knows why, but they wouldn't touch any other style
Also to hate the way people replied to you when you're only trying to kick people out of Fishman keep teaching man and just don't think about the bad things people say about you cuz it's not true
I found so incredible comments under Mr Blaukat’s Vids i will leave here a secret of mine : I made so much test on bladed jig…. Today i fish them exclusively skirtless. Why ? Because i found the best trailer match and small jerks (just with the reel) make them dart side to side so wide they can miss it, specialy in tinted waters. Most trailers don’t vibrate to the specific frequency of the blade and create strange UFO bait in the water. So the shad style i found is the Fiiish black minnow’s body. Just try you will loose your mind. Find small blaided jig(BJ) and try with the small size ones too…….. 💥even trout proof bait. Some BJ will dart easily others not well. You have to find yours. I use the heaviest BJ on craw trailers, skirtless again, often the best match is a fat body compact craw with no vibrating parts & low drag like a dynagone. I crawl them slowly on the bottom like a football jig with pauses, hops & small jerks for darting action. It really open your mind the first time you remove those skirts, not half, not a little : all these skirts ladies ! 🎉
They are at the bottom of the video when it comes on. If it’s not coming up, he might try restarting your phone or your computer. I appreciate the effort man.
i have fished chatterbaits since they came available 20 years ago. they continue to produce on my primary water, a heavily pressured lake in new england. i bought a jackhammer with a gift certificate coupla years aga and have caught ZERO fish with it. agreed, superior components, but to no avail. i now make my own with blades purchased from china for about $2 in total components. mine are jackhammer quality. i'll never buy another.

@@Tilbily typically I run it on a casting rod, because it’s basically the love child of a jig and spinner bait. But you can run it on whatever if you have the right setup.
@@Tilbily if you're bank fishing and need every bit of casting distance possible try a casting setup but personally I prefer throwing a 6.3:1 spinning reel for almost every application from a kayak and 50/50 from a boat. Only reason I use a casting setup is quick casts when I'm on the move or distance when needed but it's all situational for me even with the same baits
@@Tilbily but as the original comment says I like to use moderate slow action rods that have flex deeper into the middle of the rod(cheaper rods can work just as good for this) if you want to use braid for ripping out of grass the rod flex will be forgiving and allow the fish to hook itself without ripping the hook out and it will help to keep the line tension when the fish is further from you vs a stiffer rod giving the fish slack to throw the hook
The mini max is an awesome option as well. Gives you the same weights, and solid components with a smaller profile.

Yeah same here it’s not a comfortable bait for me for whatever reason. I’ll go out next time and only take chatter bait
Same for me. Been trying on and off for over a year and no luck yet.

As much as I fish, that’s one bait I don’t use very often. This video, peaks my interest and may cause me to use it a little more. Good video
Another good one
I also catch more on the original chatter bait than the jackhammer. I also like the elite model too. Great video.
Great stuff again Randy! The seminar format is great. Thanks again
I love them they are like a weed whacker through the grass. And those better components won't matter much if you have a little glue, keeping the hook sharp with a file is probably more important
I use a thunder cricket more. Blade starts a lot faster and works at a slower speed. IMO. Good video!
Super seminar, Randy. Superb explanation and instruction!!!🐟🐟🐟🙏

I really appreciate you taking the time to give us some Great information on one of the most popular lures available right now.
Have not had much luck on chatterbaits (only one strike and I think it was a peacock bass) but will keep trying and will use these tips. Thanks Randy!
Confidence! I believe you have more confidence with the old school bait and fish it that way. I think that makes all the difference in the world!

Jackhammer all year in Texas

This is my first time being a smart ass on RUclips but I couldn't resist, it's impossible to lose 50% of the fish you catch.
I slayed river Smallmouth bass in the fall with a 1/8 flashback mini with a 2 inch power grub trolling them from a kayak 😜👍

It's the head shape that make the original better, the blade bangs the head more and louder.

The SV 13 is the best one I’ve run across. Natural colors with electrics/pro blue red pearl kitech. $$$$
Been waiting on this one!! Thank you🎣
My favorite chatterbait mod is how I use pliers to mod the chatterbait blade, to increase or decrease the vibe intensity.
Thanks Randy. Now I know why I lose so many fish on a chatterbait. My hookset. And I do love fishing a CB!!!
3/4 ounce chatterbait work great deep with a jerky J 😎
That looks great , I also work it like a jig sometimes , it gets but that’s for sure
I’ve recently gone to 1/4 oz here in Florida just to keep it above the grass that grows to within about a foot from the surface
Randy I think your correct with sometimes the jackhammer produces in practice but you and everyone else chucking a jackhammer fish are like hmmm I seen that for last few days different sound from normal chatterbait slightly different they commit better.
Chatter Donk as I call it ! Is my go to lure in California Gold blade with a hog farmer spunk shad trailer

Hi Randy. Thanks as always. Can you please do a video on sinking your own structure? Have you done it? is it worth it? How do you do it? thanks
7'4 composite Tharp series for chatterbait. Don't ever go fishing without it.
I have enjoyed fishing the heavy models of vibrating jigs on rocky points. I will toss it out there let it fall to the bottom. Then pump the bait and let it drop back to the bottom. Those bass will smoke it.
Have you ever experimented with the angle of the blade? It's on some of the packaging I've got.
Wtf reads packaging
speed craw or d bomb the best trailers i’ve used on them
You like a boot tail? Do u use it to keep it shallow? I feel like otherwise it just kills the bait, no?
I rarely lose a fish on a chatterbait, I’ve noticed that treating the hook set as a harder crankbait set works 95% of the time
Audio sounds good!!
If you wanted a skinnier swimbait and were only interested in the tail couldn't you just get the 4.2 in megabass hazedong shad? Or does that make too much sense?

How about using a med. Hvy. Cranking rod?
That's what I use. Just don't slam the hookset. Treat it just like a crankbait.
Anyone try out the tungsten thunder cricket yet? Still cheaper than a jackhammer I think at most places
Throwing it off a ledge and letting it flutter down to 20ft is my favorite way to catch feb monsters
thank you for the tips andy
I’m definitely setting the hook too hard and this is why I have a lot get off on this bait

The new Evo Elite is way cheaper than a Jackhammer and is just as good as or better than any Jackhammer
randy are u going to try to make it to the elites this year
are give us your plans this year buddy
No. Going to fish more locally. Can’t stand being away from my family 100 days a year
What do you do when your two RUclips heroes give you different advice? B Lat or Randy!?!?
Also to hate the way people replied to you when you're only trying to kick people out of Fishman keep teaching man and just don't think about the bad things people say about you cuz it's not true
Shouldn't you rough up that zcraw?

Not sure what’s going on but I have my volume wide open and I can barely hear you.
Just cause it has better components doesn’t make it catch more or better fish. The chatter bait elite is really a fish catching bait
I never see a products tab to click
They are at the bottom of the video when it comes on. If it’s not coming up, he might try restarting your phone or your computer. I appreciate the effort man.
My view product has not been popping up
You might try restarting your phone or computer…thx!
Love chatterbait fishing 🎣

Chatterbaits do really catch big bass it's a jig on steroids 🎣
If you are going with the original, then at least upgrade to the Chatterbait Elite.

What is this imitating with the skirt?
Trying to teach people
Jackhammer is over hyped and priced...
