I think you better get your story straight here. Krishna started this caste and politics talk. He makes a living through Karnatik music, but looks down upon people aasociated with Karnatik traditions. He even looks down upon Bhagwan Sri Ram. When fans complement him on his singing a composition of Ram, he insults them. Your lack of the knowledge of the Tamil language and severe lack of research in this matter is to be blamed for not getting the true gist of this 15 minutes of fame stunt by TM Krishna. This is a multi-layered issue. I agree that anyone is free to create Carnatic inspired variations, as happens in film music, although admittedly, film music is centered on more universally neutral themes like love, and is therefore less controversial; Mr. T.M.K's Carnatic songs about social activism e.g. the Poromboke song, would fall under this category, and are unproblematic and serve a constructive purpose. However, producing Carnatic music centered on anti-Hindu political figures and religions-particularly in the current social climate in India, where some groups aim to undermine, if not outright eradicate Hinduism-risks disrespecting the tradition because such creations, whether intentional or not, dilute and undermine the Hindu essence of Carnatic music. These actions risk exploiting this sacred art because Carnatic music has developed over centuries as a profound medium of devotion and praise dedicated to Hindu deities, much like gospel music honours central figures in Christianity and qawwalis celebrate spiritual themes in Islam, particularly Sufism. This intrinsic connection between Carnatic music and Hinduism must be acknowledged and respected at all times and in any case, and anyone who denies or disputes this foundational aspect of Carnatic music disregards its deep roots in Hindu tradition and spirituality, and expresses disrespect towards Hinduism and the Carnatic tradition.

He is one of the best singers today. He says music is common to all...has he produced a single vocalist on his own ....his comments on the Queen or Nightingale of music is of bad taste. He doesn't deserve this award in her name.
I've observed the Carnatic music community for years, and I'm compelled to speak out against TM Krishna's accusations of casteism. I believe his claims are unfair, self-serving, and lack evidence. Krishna's narrative that Brahmins have appropriated Carnatic music, excluding non-Brahmins, is not supported by history. There have been many non-Brahmin giants in Carnatic music, and the art form has always been inclusive. I also take issue with Krishna's claim that Brahmins have dominated Bharatanatyam through casteism. The truth is that Brahmins never danced; it was the domain of the devadasis. The art form was revived by Rukmini Devi and others, who brought respectability back to it. Krishna's accusations are not only unfair but also damaging to the Carnatic music community. His sensational claims, such as the one about MS Subbulakshmi's fame being due to her living a Brahmin lifestyle, are unsubstantiated and hurtful. I believe it's time for the Carnatic music community to speak out against Krishna's accusations and to promote a more nuanced understanding of the complex issues facing the community. We should welcome artists from all backgrounds and promote inclusivity, rather than perpetuating unfounded accusations of casteism.
T.M.Krishna is an outstanding vocalist. The upper caste fanatics in Tamilnadu are opposing the award of Sangeetha Kalanithi to him by Music Academy out of personal prejudice and animosity .
Terrific report that explains the backlash by the Brahmin artists against progressive ideas and an unquestionably great artist in their midst! Bravo for doing this report.
Indian classical music has been taken to the masses since the days of commercial theater and later by commercial and art music. music composers, lyricists, movie directors have strived to enrich our lives with beautiful songs background music .how can this man claim about taking it to the masses when its right there where they are.
Gosh, now we have a sangita kalanidhi designate who is advertising for paid subscriptions - with a discount, would you believe? This tmk is certainly taking carnatic music to great new lows!
Krisna is not polorisizing figure. Talent has no cast Creed. Krishna believes Constitution and in Preamble Secularism is on of the pillars and all of us has to believe that United we stand divided the nation fall. More and more attack on other religion in India will only affect people of India who have for their livelihood at the cost of cheap politics
It is a testament to the freedom of speech in India that he is able to voice his opinions and contribute toward collective social advancement. However, it is unfair to accuse and criticize a group of people without evidence, especially using unproved accusations . What political power do the accused groups even hold to carry out the alleged actions? Instead of doing this he should have filed a PIL in the court system. By linking the societal respect for someone like Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi to her adoption of a culture different from her birth culture, he exposes the shallowness of his thinking. While we can appreciate his efforts to bring classical music to non-traditional audiences, we cannot condone his divisive art-politics, which seem designed to portray himself as the sole virtuous figure.
Where do you get your facts from? The basic issue is TMK has not been performing in the major sabhas for many years now (he issued a statement that he will not perform there but is now happy to accept the award). Also, there is no evidence of his social reform initiatives (unless you think just questioning itself a great reform). Also let us give him credit for action not just talking. Let him establish a parallel universe to demonstrate the changes he advocates for instead of using established platforms and creating issues in them? Your repeated referencing of Brahmins (a micro-minority in the state of TN) is just plain mischievous
TM Krishna is barking up the wrong tree. Carnatic Music developed in a brahminical society but it was never stopped form going to the masses. It is vile and hideous to claim that Brahmins stopped it from other sects. Fact is, no one was even interested to learn that Art as it was perceived as boring and too spiritual. Also supporting Periyar who called for genocide of Brahmins, is not progressive, mind it.
How did K J Yesudas, sirkazhi sivachidambarams, sheik chinna moulanas performing in sabhas if the brahminical patriarchy exists? Anti brahmins propaganda in its new form by using brahmin singers and brahmin journalists!
ragavendiran I know MS is a non-Brahmin...but her husband was a Brahmin and he supported her. And she too showed more loyalty towards her pugundha veedu. 😂😂😂

My humble question- Why do you want to change that is being in existence! Is it because it is presumed to be dominated by a sect? Or is it because it brings PEACE?
This is a decent coverage and I am an ardent TM Krishna fan for over a decade now. But I must bring to light, a correction here. Concerning Sudha Raghunathan ma’am’s interview, she wasn’t saying it is a “garbhagruha” and “others” shouldn’t enter. Rather she was saying, that the art form has to be preserved as it is, and shouldn’t be tinkered with too much just to make it a crowd pleaser, as it is sacrosanct in its own way. That is what she meant by sanctum sanctorum and respecting it. Now we could always debate about the fairness of that assessment, but to say she says “not everyone has a right to enter” I think, is a misevaluation. That said, kudos to SK TM Krishna.
Just showmanship….how has this singing in the buses helped the Carnatic music , or in the churches, etc….how has he followed it up to improve the Carnatic music in non brahmaniical areas and how many non Brahmins has he trained in the last decade….he is just fake…there is no honesty in his efforts….anyone can point out any number of top class non Brahmins singers
Absolutely incorrect narrative by the lady. This was not about brahmins boycotting krishna ..this was about they objecting to him saying wrong things about Saint Thiagaraja , MS and others
Those who are against "Christian hymns" in karnatic music should stop using the violin.😂 Chennai music luminaries were perfectly ok with musicians accused of me too..but they all have a problem with TMK.
Some top musicians were accused. When a panel was formed, headed by Smt. Sudha Raghunathan, not a single complaint was received. So you want senior musicians to be punished without any credible evidence.
1- When you go to a politician for a byte or an interview- do you do it this aesthetically- looking into their lifestyle?! Then- why is a news channeling selling his musical brand value here to talk on the politics and divides this man is creating? 2- TMK vs Conservatives- is that what you are calling it?! Wrong!!!! It should have been TMK vs Traditions. This man has the blessing of Goddess Sarasvati- but if and when he is using Sarasvati to create divides; how are the others conservatives?🤷🏽♀️ Lalgudi GJR Krishnan has really done an outreach that has created a new professional community in music- but his work is not featured on mainstream media- why?! Because he doesnt blow his trumpet like this man does?! Keeping traditions first means knowing to sit silent- when is this man silent?! He loves the media attention and you give him the attention he seeks and contributing more to the divide arent you?!
It requires attention not for the sake of attention, but to highlight that people with different walks of life need recognition. You can disagree or boycott as the opinion you hold is dear to you. To dictate what a news channel does to educate the masses is not desirable.
I am a non brahmin, but when I showed interest in Carnatic music and indian classical dance, I was consistently told in one way or other that Brahmins had some special X-factor that I did not have, and that I basically was not genetically gifted enough to pursue it. Go and watch the movie Sarvam Thaala Mayam
Nonsense. Carnatic music is enjoyed by non-Brahmins as well. If only Brahmins were interested then you guys would not have been able to make any money... because your kacheri audience consists of many non-Brahmins, your records, cassettes, CDs,etc. would have ended up in the trash.😂😂😂
Shame on this journalist, Non sense, Carnatic music has always been most secular art, this highest form of divide and rule policy of congress and evangelists to control India and not even leave its ancient art form.
Its high time that carnatic music is spread to all communities irrespective of caste and religion. Brahmins should stop their hegemony that they are the only guardian angels of carnatic music.
Filthy presentation . Ten thousands words cannot defend him well enough. You start off with reference to Me Too....in very bad taste. Krishna's on stage interaction with female co-ariste is marginally short on the salacious side. May be have millions of listeners from other teligions, communities and tribes. May he sing the songs of Perumal Murugan and other Urdu & Christian composers. Why does he invoke Brahmins and complain that they comprise of the largest number whi listen to carnatic music . Does he hate them or would despise them for this ? Who is stopping him from getting co-artistes from otger communities to accompany him ? Why has he now settling down for RK Shriramkumar /Akkarai & NC Bharadwaj ? Let him walk the talk. Do not perform in Sabhas . We dont need lousy/ rusty music devoid of Bhava, Bhakti, format . His mudic is monotonous and he realises that he cannot scale up to the level of younger performers now. He is just trying to stay relevant as he is over the hill. He is now indilging in propaganda to drum up support for himself. The hane is over for TM Krishna .
TMK is a breath of fresh air. For long now Carnatic music has been the exclusive preserve of conservative classes. To the extent that it is intertwined with the whole temple tradition. TMK has rendered huge service to the genre by freeing it from the clutches of caste South Indian Hindus.
Carnatic musicians who you group as 'Conservatives" have basic questions 1. Was there a demand from "Non privileged" communities to learn carnatic music? 2. Did anyone complain of discriminatory practices? 3. Can you name carnatic musicians who refused to teach to those? All these issues are created solely by Krishna in public without attempting to talk to his fellow musicians. Their position is they were able and willing to work for inclusivity , had Krishna approached. Krishna has accomplished nothing except get on stage, receive awards and stigmatize the community. This is because is no demand for this genre of music except through lineage and tradition. His cheap stunts endeared him to some talking heads like you but produced no outcome for the under privileged. Your presentation is a shallow, selective hit job on brahmins that you know sells well. How many of the "conservatives" did you speak with? Please do it so you get to know them and what they stand for. May be you'll get a 101 on what classical music is
I am a Brahmin only by birth. I respect people of all communities. My view is that there are stalwarts other than Brahmins in Carnatic Music. I can quote the examples - Purandara Dasar, Muthu Thandavar, Arunachala Kavi, Veenai Dhanammal, Brindha, Muktha, Namagiripettai Krishnan, Madurai Somu, Kandadevi Alagiriswamy, Jesudoos , Mylapore Karthikeyan, T N Rajarathnam Pillai , M K Thiyagaraja Bhagavathar, Naina Pillai, Karakurichi Arunachalam, and many others from Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Also many foreigners. Brahmins hail the musicians of all communities. Brahmins also applaud the compositions of Ilayaraja, A R Rahman and so on. They accept that music is open to all. Driving a wedge between brahmins and non-brahmins is the work of politicians with no ethics. TM Krishna should keep himself away from politics. Having created a controversy, T M Krishna would be appreciated if he himself refrains from accepting the Sangeetha Kalanidhi Award from The Music Academy. யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்
It is yet another unsavory episode in the history of Karnataka Sangitam of Conflicts of Truths of Beliefs and Faiths, and Truths of Facts and Realities. Art form has the goal of serving the Self Actualization and Self Regulation and objectives of delivery of listening experiences of joys and pleasures freeing the mind from transacting the living. Why no report so far has presented facts of Truths in TMK's words both free mind and pride, prejudiced minds; why 'Experts Committee ' of Madras Music Academy not given voice; why the practitioners of Art forms had a F2Fmeeting of resolution discussing the real and contentious issues?; why the lyric of Thyagaraja "Shantamu Leka Sowkhyamu Ledu" was not internalized by the Vidwans and Vidushees in their behaviors? Going for legality for settlement was the action saddened the rasikas whose value system are as per the goals and objectives of the art form for refinement as mentioned above.
Pooja madam. Dont absurdly use strong words without knowing anything about the subject on hand. Do your research properly before accusing brahmins of anything. Why doesn't T M Krishna walk the talk and utilise people from other castes who he is so intent on lifting up,in his concerts for accompanists. How many non brahmin students has been grooming all these years?
Bharatiya sangitam has been inclusive since ancient times. Until very recently (around the period of Indian independence from the British), there has been no dominance of the brahmin community. Even now, although most artists are from the so-called brahmin upper castes, a good number of musicians from other communities can be found. Kerala is an example, where the reverse is true, having the most number of non-brahmin artists. The beauty of Indian artforms is that though they can be called traditional, they have always evolved and been subject to change. It is wrong to imagine our artforms as stagnant / rigid - had they really been so, we wouldn't be witness to such a vibrant cultural edifice that has stood the test of time as opposed to those of other places and civilizations. All this noise being created by Sri TM Krishna (with all admiration for his musical vidwath) and others from outside the carnatic music fraternity is only with the agenda to vilify the minority Brahmins and in turn sanAtana dharma.
He basically is an atheist . Atheists have not place in carnatic music which is based on Bhakti . Sangeetha Gnamu Bhakti ...........- Saint Thygaraja Vina
@@sreevalsanthiyyadi9411 sure, but you may not enjoy it beyond a point. The whole ethos is built around bhakti and without that why should someone even want to get into it.

T. M. Krishna is making contradictory statements. All of us want to know that his accompaniments are Brahmins. He is a Brahmin & why he accepted this award. He should have gracefully rejected this award & ask Music academy to choose some other deserving candidate. He should follow what he preaches. Such a Shame.

Madam, it’s all fine. TMK accused Music Academy of Brahmin dominance and only if a Dalit is given Sangita Kalanidhi award he will be happy. It is still Brahmin dominated and the second has not happened. Then if he is true to himself he should not have accepted the award. Is it not hypocrisy. Answer in your next post.
I do not agree with tm krishna..letting everyone do something will destroy its uniqueness. Just like weaving which was exclusive to weaving communities died after machines came and everyone started to do it..the traditional way is dead and its is impossible to revive it to its formal glory.. i don't want that happening to carnatic music.

Music is not but it's variation is.
A wonderful person! A wonderful singer!!
MS’s grandson needs to know that he is just that…. Just that !!!!
Excellent analysis and delivery
Indian classical music has been taken to the masses since the days of commercial theater and later by commercial and art music. music composers, lyricists, movie directors have strived to enrich our lives with beautiful songs background music .how can this man claim about taking it to the masses when its right there where they are.
Thanks!
You are confused. What has constitution, secularism to do with music.
T M Krishna is shameless . Having boycotted Music academy, why does he accept the award now from the same academy . Will he please answer?
I see a proliferation of interviews and articles all of a sudden rallying behind this bete noire
Tm Krishna ❤
Well done tnm
Sir is taking carnatic music to places hitherto not seen. Kudos to you sir.
THEY are claiming rights to a property that is not theirs... there is a lot of history hidden beneath their atrocious claim.
Any link or resource to know about the hidden history buddy? TIA
How did K J Yesudas, sirkazhi sivachidambarams, sheik chinna moulanas performing in sabhas if the brahminical patriarchy exists? Anti brahmins propaganda in its new form by using brahmin singers and brahmin journalists!
Yesudas,Sirkazhi came through film route. That's why you people could not prevent them.😂😂😂
@@surajm4547 Do you know the history of MS amma first?

For fools, if God resides only in the sanctum sanatorium of a temple, after decades of songing, the art has never been understood.
For sure this wud be a topic for academic discussion in next century 😅 ..assuming academy keeps alive the tradition and legacy!
Love this man. 🙏🙏. This brahmins should oby our constitution.Any body can't above the constitution. All people have same rights to peactice any art form.
No doubt the culture of music is dominated by caste affiliation, yet human all existing all over the world, no solution at all!
My humble question- Why do you want to change that is being in existence! Is it because it is presumed to be dominated by a sect? Or is it because it brings PEACE?
This is real gold.
Very commendable appropriate review of TM Krishna's accomplishments and the deserving awards.
Real activism
Absolutely incorrect narrative by the lady. This was not about brahmins boycotting krishna ..this was about they objecting to him saying wrong things about Saint Thiagaraja , MS and others
Those who are against "Christian hymns" in karnatic music should stop using the violin.😂
Chennai music luminaries were perfectly ok with musicians accused of me too..but they all have a problem with TMK.
We will stop violin when Christian west returns 45 trillion dollars stolen and bandit Queen Elizabeth's museum and acknowledged 😂 vande matram
Some top musicians were accused. When a panel was formed, headed by Smt. Sudha Raghunathan, not a single complaint was received. So you want senior musicians to be punished without any credible evidence.
It is not challenging privilege in Carnatic music but challenging misuse and demeaning of carnatic music.
Bro is building his house on poromboke land ,
Such a super topic! Grt job taking up this
He is doing good
Definitely TM Krishna is the change very much needed 👍
1- When you go to a politician for a byte or an interview- do you do it this aesthetically- looking into their lifestyle?!
Then- why is a news channeling selling his musical brand value here to talk on the politics and divides this man is creating?
2- TMK vs Conservatives- is that what you are calling it?!
Wrong!!!! It should have been TMK vs Traditions.
This man has the blessing of Goddess Sarasvati- but if and when he is using Sarasvati to create divides; how are the others conservatives?🤷🏽♀️
Lalgudi GJR Krishnan has really done an outreach that has created a new professional community in music- but his work is not featured on mainstream media- why?!
Thanks for this report. He is an activist.
no one was excluded .. the non brahmin castes have never shown interest in Carnatic music.
If only Brahmins were interested then you guys would not have been able to make any money... because your kacheri audience consists of many non-Brahmins, your records, cassettes, CDs,etc. would have ended up in the trash.😂😂😂
odd day : we all are one
even day : not all can reach some level
Both this journalist and the psyco singer are waste of time to watch and to listen.
Nice
Jai Bhim....Manuvadi always oppose whenever a Bhaujan try yo enter in their Privileged Space
Shame on this journalist, Non sense, Carnatic music has always been most secular art, this highest form of divide and rule policy of congress and evangelists to control India and not even leave its ancient art form.
It is karunadaga Isai...British spelled as carnatic. The music is a family profession of Isai Vellalar.
What a joke lmao😂😂.
He is a revolutionary in classical music....
An exceptional artist who uses his talents for social justice and I’m a huge fan of his!
More like these
Its high time that carnatic music is spread to all communities irrespective of caste and religion. Brahmins should stop their hegemony that they are the only guardian angels of carnatic music.
You tell me, why very few rasikas from other than Brahmin community come to attend concerts, even when it is free.
did anyone stop you from learning?
Definitely he is polarizing and what he spike about MS is unpardonable. I don't think he is competent enough to talk about MS Amma
TMK has shaken the Orthodox to such extent that they have gone clueless despite their loud noise.
TNM choosing to take up the subject is good
Filthy presentation .
I think the spelling is PRIZE. As in Magsaysay Prize. Sangita Kalanidhi Prize. The Hindu Cash Prize.
Moottai godown le irundhirukkalaam...!
May be controversy gives fame & prosperity to artists
Pooja madam. Dont absurdly use strong words without knowing anything about the subject on hand. Do your research properly before accusing brahmins of anything.
Why doesn't T M Krishna walk the talk and utilise people from other castes who he is so intent on lifting up,in his concerts for accompanists.
How many non brahmin students has been grooming all these years?
And keep in mind this same guy ridiculed MS Subbalaxmi the doyen of music
Who is he to talk about her
Not even a dust compared to the great MS
Can atheists listen to Carnatic, sir, with your permission?
@@sreevalsanthiyyadi9411 sure, but you may not enjoy it beyond a point. The whole ethos is built around bhakti and without that why should someone even want to get into it.
TM Krishna is a Brahmin Supremacist. Carnatic music is like any other music, nothing special. He wants to take this music to Non Brahmin communities as if Carnatic music is superior to others.
T. M. Krishna is making contradictory statements. All of us want to know that his accompaniments are Brahmins. He is a Brahmin & why he accepted this award. He should have gracefully rejected this award & ask Music academy to choose some other deserving candidate. He should follow what he preaches. Such a Shame.
I fully agree. I fail to understand why he is not having accompaniments from olcott kuppam. For his concerts, he engages only Brahmin artists. He does only media stunts.
He can fight his caste battles he should fight this battle..
But praising Allah with Carnatic Music which are meant for praising hindu gods ,standing against CAA
Against the very dalits he fighting for suffering in Bangladesh
Inclusiveity with ISLAM 🤣
He is nothing but a POLITICIAN descised as Singer .😊
Who made the rule that carnatic music is only for Hindu gods ? It's freaking music . Anybody can create their own inspired version !
Yeah.. anybody can make it their inspired version but who they make it for matters..and that what he is pointing out..SmartAss😄
Nah bro in that sense Arabian musical chants and the general archetype of Abrahamic religions were meant for Sumerian deities 😂 Anyone can do anything with this music… Even Brahmins and the general non tamil population are not the true owners of this musical tradition.
Oh Bangladesh looking bro, There's 60000+ in camps for more than a year in Manipur. Around 10Km² or so take over by China.
Also the extremists of Bangladesh are using BJ party & Rakshasa Seva Sangh ++ actions against muslims and modani to raise fanaticism and India hate
+1 TMK
TM Krishna is a good musician, but not a great musician. To be a great musiciann there are some attributes. This presenter should rleaisie that however much you dress up a donkey, it wont look like a horse.
Change the name of the award...
he can join VCK and spread his policies without mixing politics
they never asked him to stop his ways, but only wanted to stay away from him and his theatrical rhetoric
let him go to all slums and teach them thyigaraja Kritika sama sastris works dhekshithar songs even Palanisamy sivans songs
he attacks one particular community and hence the outrage
Nobody is stopping anyone from listening, learning. Are AR Rehman, Yesudos, Ilayaraja brahmins..TM krishna is a casteist himself, thatswhy he sees caste in everything..we dont
Good joke! ARR,Yesudas and Ilayaraja came from the film world.... otherwise you guys would have ignored them.😂😂😂
