  • #TMKrishna talks about his journey from being a Carnatic singer on stage to someone who is attempting to engage with the larger world. He puts forth his definition of 'Carnatic music', wonders if #KVMahadevan or #Ilaiyaraaja songs can be called 'Carnatic music', whether art is inherently political, and talks about the boundary-stretching collaborations with writer Perumal Murugan.

Great Interview. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hats off to BR for bringing the best out of TMK. Don't get me wrong I am a great fan of TMK. I follow him on every platform. He breaks barriers & age-old pointless traditions. But surprised to hear that his stance on Raja & Mari Mari composition hasn't changed. Every human will have our own prejudices, biased & egos. Don't we. We are humans after all. As you said TMK is still "TRANSFORMING".

Amazing guy! First when he talks about his own evolution, laughs at his own past while not invalidating it.... He has clearly tried to understand himself. I feel an honesty in his approach and the intelligence surely hits you before anything else... That section about thyagaraja being more than rama while also being limited by his context and background for no fault of his... Never heard anyone saying such things openly. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole discussion. He is a good communicator who doesnt resort to jargons and Mumbo-Jumbo. 1:07:42 is an awesome fundamental which very few understand. Its all about social habituation. By itself, without the habituation, has not much in terms of unique meaning.

what keeps most people away from Classical music is that it entails hard work of learning lasing many years and in return for poor material rewards and recognition over a lifetime if adopted as a profession. It is like chess in this respect. For people with passion for this art, the rewards are no concern. Not many in the society would accept such a deal.

A couple of people have told me I should not go to his concerts because he has these stands. I don't think so. It doesn't matter whether you agree with him or not. You can still appreciate the music. TM Krishna goes overboard to prove himself sometimes and that’s where it gets complicated. You can be proud of your evolution but not at the cost of vilifying people who may also be trying to evolve but not at the pace you did. So have compassion for everyone! Also I sense a narcissism in his outlook which is obnoxious. You are still privileged not that you were. Likes of you Kamalahassan are worse because you go out of your way to hide your hypocrisy! They just want to stay relevant and seek attention by being antagonistic! It isn’t actually helping change anything!

Well meaning but half baked. He needs to understand the motivations of people like Thyagaraja. I hope he dwells deeper into Indian aesthetics and the idea of ishwara arpana buddhi. For people like Thyagaraja , the best they could do, their best compositions were an offering to God. See bhagavad gita 9:27. Its meaningless to say keep out Rama from Thyagaraja. Its doing a worse violence to Thyagaraja than changing the raga of mari mari ninne from kambhoji to saramati. Its a pity that T.M.K can understand the violence that chanhing the raga does but cannot understand the violence that taking Rama away ftom Thyagaraja does

People conveniently forget one aspect of attitude towards Carnatic music...for almost hundred years and even sone decades more ..and till about seventies it was ridiculed.. as a hindu religious practice ...by the pseudo secular ....Dravidian politicians. The practitioners were ridiculed and mocked in public life..anybody who tries to learn were also mocked and shamed.... many people became hesitant to learn it ...to avoid embarassments of ridicule... Hv experienced first hand even when classical teachers were inviting friends and me to join class and learn it... We avoided for fear of being mocked by friends ....
It was the trend ...to mock anything classical ...even brahmin guys were along that trend...
It was not just kept away.. young people were keeping away too.. kept away by sarcastic politicians ...media mockings...
But this was trended mostly in tamilnadu ..only ..other states had a respectful attitude towards classical music...
This was one of the reasons we found a dip in local talents with classical knowledge in tamil film industry ...which extensively used classical based songs...artistes from neighbouring states with classical knowledge started flourishing in tamil industry...
Only in recent decades with advent of private music channels and exposure to larger media the stigma about being seen as a classical singer has vanished and people are flocking to learn....raja sir music also played a part.. as he patronised and popularised all genres ...
But it was definitely not so in decades before ..till about early fifties we could see local classical singers from all profiles ..as was evident in film industry...then for 3-4 decades specifically in TN it saw a dip due to political culture ..teachers hardly found interested students ..
Thanks the delusion is removed and interest renewed ...

But it is totally a different argument to say Carnatic music should be accessible to more people of all backgrounds. I believe more than any other avenues schools can help get more students of diverse backgrounds to participate and see how everyone adapts to it; rather than being self critical or even saying it is being politicized. You need to understand society when these things happened- when these compositions were made. We cannot always be politically correct, especially when we are talking about things that were written centuries ago. How you live today is all that matters. If you can respect women- not just by talking about it on interviews- but through your actions and treat everyone as equal, that’s all that matters. You don’t have to analyze everything to death and politicize everything.

TM Krishna like Gandhi taking this established society to give up its cast restrictions. Since we left gurukul way of learning and took up western education, we can do same thing with Western ways in classical music. Most classical music in symphonies is kept the original way but this idea that only Brahmins hold all the strings is not progressive. If we want to make all citizens enjoy their chosen professions, we need to open up all fields including music. India can progress further when they overcome these divisions. We need Contraversial character like T.M.Krishna to question the norms of this anicient society.

Yesudasji is not a Brahmin but he is an excellent Carnatic musician of caliber! Bring cast into it is done by people who have no talent or tenacity to reach such heights and want a fall guy for them to play victim! Brahmins are those fall guys!

TM krishna 's grasp of carnatic music not inclusive is very one sided. While it is true there are attempts to make elitist and that can shoo away others , it is also true from other side especially in TN to look down upon carnatic music as boring and upper caste. In kerala it is not like this. Carnatic music more equitable. Also another point he says that I don't agree with is art form there should not be aura of sophistication around it. In cricket test cricket is considered to more classical and pure form of cricket. When someone interviewed michael holding about why he does not do commentary on t20 cricket he said he will only comments on cricket. Meaning T20 is not real cricket. The same thing exists in world of writing. Charu nivedita is a serious writing but rajesh kumar is not.

Carnatic music is nothing but songs sung in praise of hindu gods (raaga based) ...so when you believe and there is devotion then music comes from the inner soul...and not just from your mouth ........T M Krishan says he is not religious etc etc .....his current political leanings .....all this shows nothing but lack of commitment to his profession ....... Typically in Dravidian TN this is positive qualification ....

I would like to point out that any form of art needs to evolve with time to relate to the people. Only then will it live and be timeless. Carnatic music, as you pointed out is mostly about praise of god. But as an art form it does not need to be limited to that genre of devotion. There are so many emotions, stories and feelings that need to be communicated in this world. And we will use our art forms to do that. And that art form will include carnatic music. It's the most organic way to develop art forms.

@@bhairaviprasad9356 - Yes I do agree with you completely . What you are saying is happening in various forms ...there is folk music ...there is fusion music between Carnatic , Hindustani and western by various bands.. Carnatic raagas are routinely used in Tamil Films (Sindhubharavi , Alaipayuthey etc ) AND there are Carnatic Kutcheris . Nobody is objecting to all that . TMK is just doing dravidian politics and using Carnatic music for that . Let me put it this way . If somebody says I would like to speak in Pure Tamizh and somebody says I will mix Tamizh and English while speaking ....both have a right to exist . the concept of purity in itself is not discrimination.

@@coolddude9505 To be blunt, I do think in certain contexts the concept of purity is discriminatory since it is largely available to only a certain group. I understand that you disagree with his political ideology. But I don't see anything wrong in using an artform to discuss a particular political ideology to explain his perspective. That is probably because my personal belief is to debate everything including the things that are said to be pure. For example, sangham literature is being celebrated widely, as it should be. But it is not beyond debate and discussion. Take kannagi's story for example, I know a lot of people who criticise it publicly. We dont cancel it or cause destruction to the language by critising it. We just use a democratic way of debating it as the morals said in that story does not suit our day and age.
P.S. apologies for the loooonggg explaination :P haha

@@bhairaviprasad9356 - When I hear Colonial Cousins sing Krishna Nee and then comeback as Allah , Comeback as Jesus in the same song I enjoy it ...that's fusion and that's always been there . At the same time you can have a pure Carnatic concert and a pure western concert . Both can and have always coexisted . TMK is trying to say that every Carnatic musician should adopt a fusion approach because ...of all that his political ideology teaches him ...otherwise he is busy abusing and judging people ..... Dont take this personally ...this is my point of view . I am sure you are aware that Folk Music is divided on Caste Lines . For example a Vanniyar sings a certain kind of Folk music while a Paraiyar sings a certain kind of folk music . So there is certain demography or element of identity in every form of music . But Dravidian Ideology has conditioned people to think that if the demography is in favour of brahmins then we must call it out as discrimination , abuse them and make attempts to change it .... Can we ask why a art form available to a Thevar is not available to a Pallar ....or why an art form available to a Gounder is not available to a Arundathiyar i.e there is no art form which is available to all in this country . Everything is largely available to some community (not one ) and you will find a few people from other communities

@@coolddude9505 First of, I would like to appreciate that we are not cussing at each other. I know that RUclips comment section can be vicious and heartless. I just would like to add a few points. Carnatic music and bharatnatyam (sathir), used to be widely practiced and associated with the isai vellalar community. Which is very scattered and nameless right now. I think, as a reparation to that action that happened almost a century ago, we need to be aware and spread it to people without regarding the caste lines. It is not our fault that the art form is passed to us. Its our privilege. But it is our fault if we perpetrate closing off the opportunities to people who don't belong to a particular group. There is a difference between culturally appropriating and owning one's art. The folk arts are owned by people who created it for their recreation. As you have mentioned. There are also folk arts like poi kal kudhirai, parai adi etc. which belong to the oppressed societies of our state... But we culturally appropriated carnatic music and bharatnatyam from the Isai Vellalar community. We cannot own it.
