T M Krishna. Now here is a fascinating story of a musician born and bred in privilege by his own admission, who enjoyed a liberal, progressive environment both at home and at school that laid the foundations for a fearless, critical mind and outspoken tongue, enjoyed the best of teachers who fostered an abiding love for Carnatic music in his young heart and was one among the band of young musicians who took the Carnatic stage by storm in the 90s.
Just when it appeared to be the perfect ending to a fairy tale, Krishna flipped the script and stepped into a path of enquiry and innovation, all the while questioning how art is created, performed and shared, addressing issues of caste, class and gender in society. Over the last decade, his efforts and collaborations have focused on bringing closer art forms and communities that belong to polar ends of the social spectrum, drawing as much adulation and admiration from some sections as rebuke and disapproval from others. The tale, fairy or not, is as engrossing as it gets…
Notes to Myself is one of MOPA's flagship projects - a series of interactive, expository documentaries that deconstructs the lives and creative processes of some of the most impactful professionals associated with South India's performing arts. Done in a let-your-hair-down and from-the-heart way, these offer an honest, moving and at times funny and charmingly unguarded look at the lives of these artistes.

TMK is easily one of the finest Carnatic vocalists of this generation. I ended up spending the full 90 minutes watching without a pause. Something that almost never happens anymore. If anybody has a link to the Nera nammitti he refers to midway, please do post. Also real interesting to see the difference between the little snippet of Mathe here, as compared to the Mathe during a Bangalore concert few years back. However, ultimately as a total outsider, who is clueless about CM politics, accepted traditions, norms, protocols etc etc etc… I believe there is just one reality. That he should do whatever he needs to do, to keep his music alive for himself. It does not matter if he concludes with a varnam, sings in a mosque or a moving train or with transgenders. All that matters is that we continue to get an opportunity to experience an alternate reality through the magic of his voice.

While respecting your point of view & accepting it, I wanted to put forth my pov as I consider him a mediocre singer who is good for lecture demo rather than a full fledged concert. Issues I have is sruthi, unmelodious, pronunciation, bhavam etc. What I give him credit for is his technical knowhow. His politics is better left unspoken

I always knew TMK as a brilliant musician in the Carnatic music scene but I was not aware of the personality behind that magnificent voice. This video was such an eye-opener in every sense of the word. What a brilliant thinker, philosopher, inquirer. His thoughts resonated so much with me. Honestly this is not some high funda ideology rather the essence of what he is trying to say is basic humanity, equality and acceptance and the fact that speaking about this openly is distasteful to some shows a deep-rooted denial against progress in itself. Needless to say, it is not common that we see an insider taking a step back and reflecting upon what has been inculcated and conditioned by a certain community and then start to reform and bring positive changes to it. It requires grit, an undying spirit and sincerity. It is high time that more insiders start to challenge norms and societal constructs and reinvent the idea of Carnatic classical music to cater to the masses and work on the idea of inclusivity in all forms. It is everybody's social responsibility to be able to make music accessible to anybody who wholeheartedly wants it. Music cannot evolve through stagnancy; it must flow. Definitely not going to miss any of his future endeavors. This man is just pure magic. Please do continue the series! Such an amazing initiative by MOPA to bring together the brightest and most inquisitive minds.
Positive disruption in anything is good and history will remember Krishna's different approach to Carnatic music and the way it is presented and celebrated. Key changes he has made that I like are - making it gender neutral, importance to instruments like the nadaswaram (and artists), making the concert format less structured and more spontaneous, keeping instruments as main and vocal as accompaniment, taking Carnatic music to the nook and cranny of TN, making it appealing in mixed formats, making it an approachable form of art. As a singer, listener, contemporary, proud of Krishna's initiatives wrt music. Way to go and more power to our Krishna.
Jai TMK sir. I am a surgeon and have very little knowledge of music, but when ever I see you sing or speak, I learn so much about music, including the strong thoughts band convictions you have and my English vocabulary also has improved.
I have viewed and listened to Shri TM Krishna non stop during this course of video presentation. I have attended to Shri Jiddu KRISHNAMURTHY at Vasant Vihar about freedom in your thinking and in a way your life. I have been a great admirer of TMK's music. His thoughts are way ahead, far advanced and People will see what he is addressing many years later. 👌🌹

My goodness, this is very insightful to watch. I am in love with his personality, character and values. It was deeply moving from his ideas about music to his social awareness. The way he constructs the music around a word and how his brain works in doing so is nothing short of extraordinary. Being involved to make classical music accessible to every class, gender, caste and whatnot was amazing. Such an incredible being.
An amazing and a unique production. Introspective, honest to the core, endearing and heart warming all at the same time. In a fragmented world such as ours where labels overtake life, such articulations provoke alternative thought and not only is it refreshing, it is also healing. Kudos to MOpA for illuminating the thought process behind this seeker.
The last part broke my heart. The cost of having a conscience is so great. Wish it wasn't.

I don't have words to describe this genius of a musician and the human being. The presentation is so well done that the evolution of the present TMK is very well depicted. The talk is very very enlightening and makes you look inside you. Not as a musician alone but more as a human being. What he attributes to music world is equally applicable to your day to day interaction with the society too. One of finest musicians ever been on this side of the Universe.
TMK is certainly a maverick. Constantly experimenting himself. Evolving or not is a moot point. Again it is a question of perception. Beyond all these he's gifted to have got a great voice. He does not like to be always patronised but wants to be questioned. It's two way process.
Something I cannot fathom is that he is hard-core in whatever he believes.
His heart to sing us the same that reachout to the poor artists. The open talk, progressive thinking, fearless conversation, controversial issues... combination of all, and all given sane attention. So good to listen to you.
TMK is a revolutionary in carnatic music , using his talents , to share and adopt it to other downtrodden communities!

I kind of agree with TMK here. I grew up the US. I like both carnatic music and hindustani music. people would always tell me that i would get confused if i tried to learn both styles of music. This is not the case because I later found out that both carnatic music and hindustani music came from the samaveda. in india, for a very very long time, there was only one system of music. This type of music was called "dhrupad" and it was sung in the palace courts of the kings and it very closely resembles carnatic music. dhrupads are the highest form of music because they are all songs on god. they are sung with a instrument called the rudra veena, because it has a lot of bass and the pakawaj, which is similar to the mridangam. When singing a dhrupad, a long alapana, called a "nom tom"alapana was sung before the composition was sung. for a very long time in india, dhrupad was the style that was sung. The great tansen's guru, swami haridas, was actually one of the disciples of sangeetha pitamaha sree purandaradasa. due to Islamic, persian, and arabic invasion in the northern part of india, sometime in the 18th and 19th centuries, a split happened and the northern part of india became known as "hindustan" hence it was hindustani music. This is when "khayal gayaki" came into the picture in hindustani music. "khayal" is an urdu word for imagination, thought, concept, idea... And this is what is mostly seen in hindustani recitals today. there are two types of "khayal" ""bada khayal" and " chota khayal" "
"bada khayal " is synonymous to "vilambit" which means slower tempo and slower and longer tala cycles are taken to sing "vilambit" such as "ektal" a 12 beat cycle, jhoomra, a 14 beat cycle, tilwada, a 16 beat cycle, teental, 16 beat cycle. "chota khayal" could be in mdhyama kala or duritha kala tempo, therefore talas such as teental or ektal canbe utilized. the southern part of india was not too much influenced by persians and islamic influence and the southern part of india retained the old tradition and that tradition of music came to be known as carnatic music.

This is a masterclass by TM Krishna on music, you could even say art in general and mainly on society's 'norms' and 'conditioning' and what it does to certain things they consider 'aesthetic'. He has redefined and enlightened me on that word! Coming from a conservative music setup and talking about normalisation of sexual orientation (oh this topic by itself is too taboo for mylapore mamas😂) and other artforms and also understanding the privilege that he derives from his gender and caste is just awesome!

Whoa! It is not "notes to myself (TM Krishna)"! It is his thoughts and notes to us, everyone! One can love him or hate him as a musician, but he stands tall as a good human being! Bravo, for being so thoughtful and sharing the thoughts with us!
Anything that divide the society is wrong in the civilized world and should be condemned! Art is the last place where there should be division, love and humanity are the core values of any art!

Love love love this talk. Unfortunately, most artists just want to please people. They do not want to introduce 'disturbing' ideas that'll challenge their audience.
I feel sad to see critics go overboard with their barbs. His views and ideas deserve contemplation. It is this new India which feels agitated when the status quo is challenged . If it were the Chennai of the 50s 60s or even 70s, the music community may not agreed with his views but wouldn’t go berserk like this. Also got to do with the regime abd social media . Have become an intolerant society

This video..is.an eye opener about T.M.K.'s universal approach and empathy for the down trodden rasikas.His offering free concerts goes to prove his magnanimity and nobility and total love for music for music sake.what I feel awkward is his equating porampoku with the immortal sublime Kirthan of SANGEETHA MURTHI..SAINT THYAGARAJAR..As a person he seems to be innately simple with no airs.at all .He just can't belittle the classical compositions.no wonder such a passionate artist is shun by renowned. Sabhas and people.v.v.sad.this is the brick -bats he has received for his radical thinking which he could have easily concealed.goes to prove his detachment for mammon.and fame.

The more you go personal, it becomes universal. The more questions you ask yourself, double the question you throw at others.
Art, culture, philosophy, environment, sociology, history purana and of course politics these are areas where hardly any artist of this era dare to go. I think, after Kumar Gandharv there is T M Krishna ji who dare to chanllenge himself first and others next. I think this where course and flow of history tends to take a different turn. Truly a treat to watch, listen and experience Krishna ji always. This episode sums up where for the first time Mumbai synagogue was open for all and Krishna ji performed there with his usual musical charm.

This was an engrossing monologue and revealed (to me) both this man's obsessions and hatreds, which come off as personal sensitivities and flights of conscience.
It is a very polished narrative with no loose ends but a deeply self serving one in the end.
His thoughts don't come from a social and political epiphany like he claims. More likely they stem from his own shadow side - guilt, shame - and to compensate for this, anger and exhibitionism!
Such people are deeply problematic and we see them all around us today in India. They are hell bent on destroying various institutions but not building anything worthy and wholesome in their place other than spouting empty feel good phrases like freedom and justice for all .. What a waste of talent !!

Brilliant. I may not agree but Respect his perspective. Privilege , influence and social strata matters irrespective of what your talent is. I like the term Mylapore gang but the Alwarpet Gang is the real masters owning the industry of carnatic music. If you are ment to be something you will be that. That's all about. Its the design. Weather one likes or not thats all about it. TMK will rememberd for his 'Music' and I am his fan too, the one who has the freedom to disagree the views but like the music here and there that appeals to me.
