One of the biggest differences is the gravity. NES Tetris after level 29 is down to one frame on the grid hence it’s the fastest the game can go on an unmodified cartridge. Modern Tetris has instant gravity (20G) hence why locks delay is very helpful in new variations!
Yeah lock delay is definitely huge! That 1-frame for Lv 29 would technically be called 20G as well then, no? Since the 20 refers to the amount of rows the pieces drops per frame. That being said it makes what all those pro classic players can do with rolling even more crazy
@@GoTron88 The fastest NES speed is 1 row per frame in the base game, though modern competitions use 2 rows per frame with modifications. No lock delay and maximum 30hz movement basically means 2 rows per frame is impossible though. 20G is 20 rows per frame.
@SunnyDispsition thanks! Yeah in modern I love 20G modes like master mode for TEC or T10 invictus in T99. I haven't tried TGM yet but I hear 20G is a nightmare there lol
I feel like a lot of Classic players tend to enjoy Tetris TGM. It's got some of the wall and floor kick mechanics but a bit quicker on the locks and 20G gravity. I used to have DX on my GB Color though. I loved that game!
Classic player here, I dislike tgm for being weird looking and putting the preview up top. I also dislike tetris dx because of the music. I hope to never hear any of that again. Instead I enjoy basic game boy tetris most because it's the most convenient being on a gameboy. That said I do enjoy some tetris 99.
I feel like Modern Tetris is a better game. It removes the luck from Tetris, and the ability to HOLD blocks makes the game practically have 0 luck based elements. The biggest feature is the lock system. I always feel cheated whenever I play classic because I know where I wanna put this piece but I just can’t move it over there in time. Modern feels like how fast I can think rather than how fast can I mash.
Definitely different strokes for different folks. In terms of VS battles, modern does provide a more dynamic experience. But Classic these days is pretty exciting too with all the max ceiling that have been shattered recently!
for me TGM tetris (more specifically, tgm3 world rule) is the best. It retains the wackiness of guideline tetris we all know and love, and also adds onto it the thrill of speed akin to that of classic tetris. Its both physically and mentally demanding

@@GoTron88 it would be different since in 20G the piece spawns on the bottom of your stack without a drop animation (take Tetris DS or the TGM games)
@@jakanoid4251Ohh I never actually noticed that difference. Thanks!

How often do classic Tetris players play “Tetris DX” and “Tetris 64”? They seem to have features from both genres of play.
