He was ALREADY beefing with Kendrick, 'cause he talked that talk and claimed he was feeling like Muhammad Ali in an allegedly 'Big 3' conversation, being those three himself, Kendrick and Drake (which was true at that time, not anymore). That's GOAT talk, and it was a bluff that Kendrick, the real king, called out in Like That, sending both shots to Drake and Cole, and specifically mentioning the song and labeling it 'sneak dissing'. J. Cole decided to respond to these with 7 Minute Drill, backing up all his previous GOAT claims and tough talk he had been previously delivering left and right (with song like Benny the Butcher's collab and Yatchy's collab). He drops a disstrack on Kendrick and then, even before Kendrick has time to even react, backtracks with a public apology, talking about feelings or whatnot. YES, being an MC is about rapping, and he's *not* rapping when someone called him out to rap in the GOAT conversation he had been engaging because he ISN'T THE GOAT, then he shouldn't have been talking like that since Kendrick took it as a threat to his status as the real GOAT of this generation. You are not a MC if you can't back up your claims, it's a very simple concept, and nobody, on top of it, likes timid or cowardly people. Every great rapper before both these dudes would have never done such a thing without instantly ruining his career, which is what happened to mr J.Cole.
If you don't understand this you don't understand Hip Hop, plain and simple.

I would think this way but I considered the following: If you consider that a huge part of J Cole's body of work consists on him talking about how great he is, you would agree that this move he made was incredibly detrimental to him in terms of image. One now cannot listen to his music the same way because, for example, when he says he is the best it now comes out as a lie. His move is the opposite of what a Marketing oriented move would have been, in my opinion and based only on the info the public has.

This “beef” isn’t the same as past beef’s there is no hate between them. Therefore it cannot not be settled the traditional way. Only way we can see who the best is, is if they drop the collab album. In the heat of the moment I get why Cole dropped the diss. A part of him doesn’t want to look pussy. The other part that won in the end didn’t want to discredit his bro who he knows is a dope artist. Only reason this is a big deal is cuz we were on for top tier entertainment since hip hop has been wayy too tame for years. Ngl I wanted to see it too but it wouldn’t make sense. In order for there to be a winner between the two of them some low lows would have to be thrown. Due to their relationship only way to settle it is to hop on the collab album 🤷🏽♂️

He’s been making claims that he was the best. Hithop is competition genre for best rapper, being number 1 it is also a genre where artist are respected when they are writing their own lyrics so when you are a lyricist, yes it’s about making great songs but in this competition you want to see who’s the best so if you’re making these claims that you are the best the only way to find out is to battle wrap someone it’s nothing too deep. It’s not something that will end anyone’s career. We just wanna know who’s the best.
