don't waste your time people. here's the video in a nutshell: Need an adapter? Buy one!
You don't show anyone how to "fix" anything like your title states.

NB This video is over four years old - yes these days you can of course get the adapter part Adam is showing very cheaply, but back then it wasn't so easy. So four years ago this was a helpful tip. To answer Adam's question about why they were detachable - it comes from the time when external drives were either firewire or USB 2.0 (pre-dating USB 3.0 by many years) and with most external drives you got one or the other while this made them interchangeable.

You are my kind-a-dude!!!! You are so clear and provide so much information. I'm not computer illiterate, but since my interests are all done on the SCREEN of a computer, I do not have lots of confidence in the workings of a computer. So when my elderly mother says she needs to get stuff off a "dead" external hard drive, I assume that's hard.
To be honest, you are the first video I found, so I don't feel like I need to keep searching. Thanks for being willing to take the time to make videos like this for people like me.

I discovered this while watching Crucial's guide on cloning an SSD. I have a Seagate Backup Plus external hard drive and had been wondering for the longest time why the heck is it detachable like that. At first, I thought I broke it, but then it seemed to clean to be broken. I love to detach that piece. Also it's funtional :D I tried it on a 3.5" drive but strangely my mouse stopped working and I heard a USB device unplugged sound. I learned that it needed extra power to run so maybe it was asking for more power, and what was confusing was that it's rated 5V at 450mA _and_ 12V 700mA. I guess the 12V is for the separate power.

Say you had no internal HDD in the laptop, could you use this USB to Sata cable with a 2.5 HDD that has a OS to run the computer stand alone ? Can you use this to troubleshoot a busted internal sata cable ? How about 1 step father. With no other HDD in the computer could you take a brand new 2.5 HDD , 1 of these cables and a USB stick with windows on it and install a new OS onto the HDD through this connection ?

Thanks for this very useful info. I have an internal SSD that I want to connect to the SATA port on a media device. It sounds like I can just plug it in (no removable part as you show), or do I need an adapter or special cable of some kind?

I keep forgetting to post something on your moving vlog about your router for T.W.I and now I can remember I figured to post it here while it is still fresh in my head. It is actually better and cheaper in the long run if you purchase your own router. You can get a much faster and better quality router than the one T.W provides and you can get one with wireless built in as well. Plus, if you purchase your own like I did, you won't have to pay the lease fee and the wireless fee, which I think the wireless fee is absurd and they should not charge people for it.
You can purchase new or used one's on amazon or ebay. I figured to let you know so you can save yourself money in the long run since T.W likes to stick it to the man, or women. Great video as always and I will be hoping over to your vlog page now which I rather enjoy a lot.ツ👍

No need to buy a particular type of external hard drive anymore, a similar cable is available by itself. Mine was about 6 bucks!
Look for 'adapter SATA to USB 3.0'

I always wonder with the external hard drive enclosures or external hard drives why connection cables (USB or SATA) are removable... there is no situation I can think of where I would detach the cable. It's annoying. After a while the connection between the cable and the drive becomes loose and the cable gets unplugged while running.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  7 лет назад +1

Because in many situations, swapping out the cable for a longer/shorter one is necessary. And storing them w/o detachable cables or traveling like that means stressing/breaking off the cable. Etc.

I pulled the power supply out the deskltop and have connected it to the external hdd outside of the desktop, ive got the data cable as well plugged into the 3.5 hdd , can i plug the other end directly into my laptop where there is space for a second drive , Obviously the hard drive is to big to physically fit but the data cable connection is the same . will this work without blowing the laptop up .In summary wall socket to power supply .power supplky to 3.5 hdd and the final step im querying is the from the HDD directly into where the second drive of the laptpo should be

+SilentKill789 There's no technical reason for one to make "better" video quality than the other, as they encode the same way. Something's just not set right.
All the OBS videos I've made so far are in that playlist linked under every OBS MP video. It'll be a while before I make more/finish making them public; November is super shopping season so I gotta focus on reviews for a bit.

I have an old 2004 laptop drive from a Dell Inspiron laptop. None of the kits I've tried so far work. It's a Hitachi Travelstar 4200rpm ATA/IDE 40GB drive. The drive connector has like 22 flat terminal pins in a single row with 4 straight-pins aligned in a rectangle next to them. I'm having a hard time finding kit to interface this drive with USB, anyone know what this connection is? Just shouting into the wind here.

I bought a $4 wire from Gearbest that works with all 2.5" hdd and ssd's; I also took apart my broken seagate external hdd and it has a bridge much like the one he shows in this video, that works for all 3'5" hdd because it also has a plug that goes into the wall to provide the 12V required. Small external hard drives can also be taken apart, as he mentioned, very easily and the bridge inside is almost exactly like the one he has here. The only major difference is the one he shows is detachable without removing any screws. These will work with all SSD's and 2.5" hdd. I have several of those as well.

Hey I'm trying to use my notebook's old hard drive as an external hard drive otg and neither my phone nor my tablet are recognizing it. They're both otg compatible and I've formatted the hard drive as both FAT32 and exFAT and neither work. I assumed it was something to do with the power requirements, so I tried using my phone's power bank alongside it, but even that doesn't seem to work. Do you have any suggestions?

"Electrostatic shock can kill a hard drive"..........proceeds to shake the piss out of it. lol
Fuck the platter and fuck the needle. lol
I'd take my chances with finger oil and electrostatic shock over shaking it any day. Better pray that needle reset and isn't hanging over the platter.
I think it may occur less on modern hdd's, I think they actually have a park mode for the needle so when it isn't in operation it resets the needle to a neutral location. However, I think if the hdd lost sudden power which is always possible the needle will be overhanging the platter and you just may not know it is.

Overall it was good information, but there's a good bit of misinformation too (which may just be misspeaking, but still)
The larger 3.5" drives don't necessarily require a lot more power, they just require both 5 volt and 12 volt, which obviously, USB's 5 volt ass does not supply.
Also, lozenges m'dude, they exist. lol
