Moderate light exposure from electronic devices may be causing you to go blind in ways even Stevie Wonder would warn against.
Sure, you can be a visionary even without your eyesight, but why ruin it with the use of your cell phone and computer?
The Chesapeake Bay Waterman Study found that even fishermen who stared out over water reflecting the sun’s rays suffered macular degeneration - or damage to the retina.
But, even if light doesn’t have the intensity of sunlight, the brightness can cause our eyes to become fatigued as they are trying to adjust to the level of “sudden” illumination.
How often have you reached for your cellphone in the middle of the night only to feel like you were literally being blinded by its brightness. This feeling wasn’t just a hunch. Long-term exposure to sudden bright light from your cellphone or computer screen can damage your eyes.
It’s got a fancy name - photo-oxidative damage - when light reacts with the retina to produce molecules that are reactive to the surrounding molecules in the eyes - but all you need to know is that these sudden bright lights can be harmful to your eyes.
Little Stevie Wonder was a 12-year old musical prodigy without sight, but you needn’t join him by losing your own. Turn down the brightness of your cell phone or computer at night, or allow your eyes to adjust to light slowly. You’ll save your vision, and get to keep your illuminated genius, too.

It's funny how you made a vid about this even though the only way to watch it is on our devices
exactly.
Sure lol but the joke is kinda on you. The video isn't about watching devices, it's about how and how often
You can save your eyes by reducing the blue light and you can still watch this video
Naw I seen this in a book
It's funny that he never said get on ur device and watch this he's just warning you
This is why it's good to read comments... came here from TED-Ed
I regret nothing
Its cool. I thought I was making good videos until I saw these!
Amari Deraisx same here... but these sound effects are just awful. feels like i’m back in middle school

You learned English from your phone too ?

A phone can help you in a lot of ways... The only reason why they say that is because they don't experience what we're experiencing they're not seeing what we're seeing. As they say seeing is believing. They think that we're doing nothing wasting our life because they're not seeing us do anything but stare at our phones... Unlike their days which was filled with stuff like reading books, writing on notebooks, and outside almost all the time. We can do those things using our phones but they don't acknowledge that fact, simply because they didn't experience it. Some parents say our phones are harming us because of it's radiation but in fact eating 5-10 pieces of bananas gives us almost the same amount of radiation we get per hour using our phone. One time when I was studying for tests on my phone doing too much research on the point where I was tired, my father came in with his belt yelling at me saying im wasting my life on my phone instead of reviewing for my tests... We had a heated argument then my mom came in explaining everything but he still didn't believe it so she prepared a test for me containing everything I had on my search history. Considering I just read them it was all fresh information so I got a perfect score. He still didn't believe us but atleast he doesn't bother me when I'm reviewing.

@@Fennetic Yes bro that happen to me phone is always helping they dont know what we are doing like study about math, science, and other subjects or anything and games is just like for fun so we can do anything or something else what we can do.Phone is damaging our eyes but for only reason why because we use it for too long and we just like collecting some radiation from phone to us and because the letter are too small like we can see it in any years our eyes is blurry because of radiation and the letters are small and dangerous to us.But its the only way to solve problem easy than going to the library😔
Go easy on the sound effects, it shouldn't be so loud, bold and over whelming
Thanks for the tip. Will make sure this is taken care of in future videos.
Health Chronicle I think the man's voice should be louder than the sfx. It feels like he's struggling to be heard and it feels really uneasy for the viewers. Just an insight. I hope you guys get bigger someday :)

if tv screens were really damaging your eye, you would be blind by now because you stare at your phone all day.
My doctor said that today
I know this comment was 2 years ago but I’m always wondering how people use there screens and devices for so long and yet there eyes are fine and then there’s me

😂👌
I used my phone that way for two ears now I can't see anything without glasses
My perfect vision is ruined
haha, you bet everyone got worse eyesight during 2020-2021
I've discovered something very worrying when I bought a gift for my bro, which was an expensive welding "chameleon" helmet that has a visor that automatically goes dark as soon as you look at something that is too bright for your eyes. While I was testing it I looked at my mobile phone - and visor went dark in instant. Every single time. Too bright for our eyes. Yet we stare at our phones for hours at the time, often in the dark. If welding helmet thinks that mobile phone screen is as harmful as a bright welding spark - shouldn't we start worrying, as with this degree of light exposure macular degeneration will eventually set in, leading to a probable severe vision loss? 🤔
LCD screens, sunglasses, and welding shields typically contain a polarizing filter for the same reason: to make it easier for you to see clearly, especially in bright sunlight.
What tends to happen is your polarized sunglasses do their job by only allowing light to pass through vertically. Meanwhile, your phone screen emits horizontally vibrating light while blocking vertical light.
Your lenses and screen end up counteracting each other by working in opposite directions. As a result, you wind up seeing a dark or blacked-out image.
@@sweetdestruxion
Interesting conjecture. Any links to papers by Mr. Joe Wiseman et. al. to substantiate your claim? 🤔
@1F694_ it's a simple Google search. I put on a pair of polarizing sunglasses one day and pulled out my phone and couldn't see the screen, thought my phone died. Happened to pull it out again later with the glasses off and it was fine. Put the glasses back on to check and sure enough it went dark. Googled it and found out how it worked.
@@Phoenix_cataclysm_in_2040. Literally high school physics. Search what polarization is before trying to sound smart.

Ha that's why I adjust the lightening level it does but idk if I'm doing enough to keep out the damage?
Your body is capable of dealing with small pressures, low brightness should be fine as long as you get ample sleep.
So, basically, it's the brightness that damages our eyes?
I'm going to wear glasses playing on my computer and phone xD
I always keep the brightness on the lowest setting, sometimes lower with an app if I need to.
Everyone always asks why my screen is so dark.
Same i do this cuz i want to preserve the battery
wow
I found this channel looking through ted ed comments and I am glad I found this

Can you change that by just making the brightness to 5%
*Silently turning on Eye Comfort, Night Mode, Low Brightness*
There has been other videos explaining that using phone and tv screens does not make ur vision worse.
I got glasses now is it possible to cure it. I use phone a lot to read books.
I keep my screens dark anyway, I actually watched this with my phone screen already brightness down all the way and I keep nightlight on 24/7 because I hate bluelight
I never have high brightness on my phone. Edit: Thank you for liking this comment!

Ok so looking at the sky and not a the sun ur eyes will be damaged
My auntie always stares at her bright phone just before she sleeps, and she has 100% perfect vision at the age of 40 🤷🏼.
Lucky her! Not all of us are so fortunate. How many years has she been using the phone though? Macular degeneration takes time and occurs overtime, Its a fairly slow process. Even if she has perfect vision, maybe a little lower brightness would be okay :)
@@HealthChronicle thanks for the reply! She's probably had a phone for about 15 years, but I'll remind her to turn down the brightness before sleep. 👍🏼
I stay on my phone 24/7 no matter what I am on it forever and yes my vision is kinda blurry

honestly
Need proper guidance, your life and time is something that can’t be replaced so easily be entertainment. g
i don't look at my phone at night.i try to keep the brightness at the lowest level
You should also talk about how blue light from our screens negatively affects us.
Good point. Will make a video on this . Thanks ! Any other ideas are also welcome !
Your profile is blue now my eyes are ruined
25% of sunlight is blue light.
Good thing my brightness always all the way down
i have been looking at screens for my whole life yet my vision is completely fine
SMH... Mine Just started before realising it. I usually like my brightness 100% because I don't want to miss out on the clearity of what I'm watching.
Get F.Lux! Makes it possible for you to dim down the light of your monitor.
Mine already low..!
I already ruined my eyesight from my phone i went from 20/20 vision to 18/20 within a month I literally can barely see so 😂
Can relate I am prolly at a negative
After all of that now trying to flash bang me. I think he’s trying to make me go blind💀
I am leaving to see mobile phone😱
An excellent topic.
Include the idea that a minus lens also "ruins the eyes".
Refractive STATE of the fundamental, or normal eye.
How does a minus lens "ruin the eyes"? thanks
So.. basically just turn down brightness all the way down and continue 12 hours of gaming :)
How do i do that
Does gaming destroy our vision....
Some videos say no but the effects are temporary like eyestrains and headaces....
But...
Does gaming destroy our eyes permanently ?
No
Ive been doing this since i ever got a phone i am so used to having it super low for brightness and when i see my dad turn his phone on its on max and im like WTF THATS TO BRIGHT i lowered ir🤦🏻♂️😤😎
Hahaha me too.. my dad's phone brightness is always in maximum and it's too bright for me .. so whenever i borrowed his phone i always lowered it and he will scolded me.. "why is it so low? You can't see anything on this.".. LIKE DAD? IT'S TOO BRIGHT YOU KNOW..
*sorry for my english😘
That's a complete myth. In order to be harmful in any way, blue light would have to be extremely bright. The blue light from our phones isn't bright enough to cause any sort of damage. The worst it can do is temporary strain the eyes. Please do your reasearch next time.
My eyes are blurry but I do not know how to tell my parents😞
If I watched 8 episodes of my favourite TV show, my eyes would be very irritated. I always take a break. Thanks for the information! 😀
Download f.lux to partially solve this problem!
What's up with all the Stevie Wonder comments? Seems unnecessary.
@1:12 App made by "haxor industry" called "Screen filter" will fix that if you put it on before going to bed.
What if u have a screen that is so freaking bright so if u turn it down it still is bright.. I have 2 screens and the other is ok. Ima just use that screen xD
just turn your brightness down, plus if you are using an LCD screen, turning down the brightness not only protect your eye, it also gives deeper black(color on screen), just like an OLED screen.
I love watching your videos for the crazy amount of hard work gone in animating this. What software do you use to animate?
These are all hand drawn in tvpaint. 😊
Funny, I’m watching my phone in the dark on a bright screen while watching this
The Stevie Wonder references were uncalled for.

I've been learned about the damage that our phone and computers can do to us by my father that has lived with Macular degeneration since his early 20's. still he can cook better than me xD
Wait did your father used smartphones and computers back then how 😅
We are seeing this video in mobile
My phone light will be 0 till now
All facts are true in the given video, but it doesn't fit with the video title. Sure, your theme is of 2 minutes, but instead of saying "Does Electric Device's Light Damage our eyes", saying "How much of an effect does max brightness at night affects us" is better as from someone who hasn't seen the video will get the exact response the viewer from.
All in all, Good video. Liked
Sometimes at night I turn my phone’s brightness all the way down and it’s still bright.
+Scavenger One yes that happens to me also many times. I keep a small light on whenever im using any electronics in bed. Doesnt strain as much.
